Tried this place for the first time. I wish I took a picture of the rice, looked good until I found which looked like a rat dropping. THE STAFF IS SO MEAN! They were rude and acted annoyed by our presence the entire time. Please don't act like you're too good for the people who provide your income. This isn't actually a buffet as they only do to-go and cannot dine in at all. Despite the very poor attitude, the food was actually delicious. My family and I relocated here in November and Rocket came highly recommended! Chinese food is one of our absolute favorites! It's conveniently located right off of the main drag in Alamogordo. There's always plenty of parking, even during the busy hours. Once upon a time, Rocket was a dine in buffet but that has changed. The owner is always present and she's so welcoming and down to earth. The food is still set up in a "buffet" style except you serve yourself in a to go tray. I love this service as it allows me to get a lot or little of different foods. Everything about this place is great, the crab rangoon is to DIE FOR, and i can't be any more serious about that. They don't have indoor seating but i lowkey prefer the take out version. The food is great. Best chinese-american cuisine you'll find in this small town. Let me get this qualifier right out front: I don't like Chinese Buffet's and have never had one I would consider "good". In fact, some of the poorer meals I have had around this great country have been the smattering of Chinese buffets I have tried. With that said, I will now launch into my Rocket National Buffet review: I was intrigued by the name of this place as I piloted my lunar lander down White Sands Boulevard. The thing that has brought me into the occasional Chinese Buffet is the prospect of decent food quickly. Rocket National Buffet seems to have taken this approach window in their food: quality over quantity. In my opinion there was plenty of quantity, just not the acres and acres of dishes I have seen at some buffets. I was surprised at how good the food was, with a few mediocre exceptions. The included Mongolian BBQ is an interesting twist. You compile your ingredients, set them on a table by the grill and wait for someone to grill it, which generally takes only a couple minutes. Then someone comes around with the dish and presents it to each table until someone claims it. The bottom line on Rocket National Buffet? Clearly a local favorite and worth a return visit. read more

Usually I'm not a fan of Chinese buffet, as I prefer authentic Chinese food. My friends decided to eat here, and I'm pleasantly surprised. Food is what you normally would expect from a Chinese buffet, price is very reasonable ($8) and service is good, too. Owners speak Chinese, too. They have a lot of varieties and tons of fruits. Super rude customer service. The lady was making me feel like i was been annoying by asking what kind of seafood they had. Keep leaving me *they are serving your food now* by saying "okay whenever you decide let me know" on a super rude tone. Then she said "if you get two seafood side it's $2 because seafood it's expensive" I don't know what's wrong with this place but this is not the way you refer to a customer. Food was great, but wish there were more of a selection of vegetable dishes. It was my first time there, and I sat for a while before asking the wait person if I should just go up and get food. It would have been nice if the wait person explained how the buffet works before he got our drinks. The selection of food was very diverse, except there were few vegetable dishes. The fish tasted fresh, as did the other menu items. I would have rated this restaurant higher, except for not knowing what to do when we were seated, and having to go up and ask, also, because of the lack of vegetable dishes. The food is tasty and the service is pleasant. I liked the white fish and its juices on top of a bed of white rice. Simple but very nice. The fried zucchini was something I enjoyed. And if you put a couple of almond cookies at the bottom of a cup and add the soft serve ice cream that is a nice combination if timed just right. I had written a bad review before based on one bad waiter and that was not fair to this business overall since my recent visit to this restaurant was pleasant and enjoyable. I wish them well and things are looking up for them with the recent closing of Empire Buffet. read more

Mmm...Mongolian! They're sweet tea is refreshing too! I used to love this place and was a regular. Even after a friend of ours got food poisoning we still continued to go. The food is what you would expect from a chinese buffet, although every time the best dish came out (Pepper Chicken or something like that) it was inhaled by other guests before I could get up there. Also, they have a mongolian barbecue style buffet table but it wasn't staffed when we got there. We learned upon leaving by spying on other diners that if you make a bowl and just leave it up by the grill, someone will be summoned from the recesses of the kitchen to stir fry it for you. read more

As Chinese buffet's go this is pretty average. Most of the dishes that I tried were your typical buffet type food, nothing outstanding. The Kung Pao chicken lacked Pow, was rather bland, but not awful. Unfortunately the Mongolian BBQ station was not open at the time we visited. However, I will give them thumbs up on the cleanliness. They were doing a very good job of keeping the place cleaned, even to the extent of pulling out the tables to clean underneath and around. So that alone deserves a 3 star rating. Plus I didn't get sick after the fact, so a plus there as well. As far as Alamogordo goes, there aren't very many choices beyond the typical "chain" restaurants, so if you're looking for something on the local side, this is a good choice. In short, good service, clean, but marginal on the food taste. I'd go 2 1/2 stars if that was a choice, but it's not, so leaving it at 3. read more

We were coming back from Calif, headed to Capitan,NM. It was about 4:30 on a Sunday. It was seafood day. We stopped here on a whim. Are we glad that we did. I have enjoyed this Chinese spot more than the others in town! The family and their staff working here are very kind and attentive! Food is being refilled the whole time as you are eating. Since my last review there has been a change in ownership, but still in the same family. We have eaten here three times with the new owners and..... still the best buffet in town! It's all relative... But pretty good for buffet Chinese food (run of the mill, but not bad). We were hungry and it was late (9:30 pm) so few options open but glad we gave it a try. Service was exceptionally friendly and because it was late, they offered to make dishes fresh for us so we wouldn't get the scraps left. They have a Mongolian bbq setup also on side back area but we didn't realize it until we were ready to leave (nor did they explain it, we had read about it). We stopped in Alamogordo overnight on a road trip. Our hotel suggested this place. We ordered takeout. It was okay. The chicken with garlic sauce had an odd flavor. The general tzo chicken we are sure came off the buffet after sitting on it for a long time. The sweet and sour chicken was not very good at all. We would probably not return to this place.
