I've been coming to "Smiley's" pizzeria (as he we used to call it) on & off for a couple decades now. Sometimes it's really good, sometimes it's okay and a few times it wasn't good at all. Recently they've been on the better side, but today was an okay day. Smiling pizzeria is a typical old-fashioned NYC pizzeria. They have a small variety of pizzas, beef patties (which a lot of pizzerias aren't doing now-a-days), calzones, garlic knots, zeppoles (another hard to find item!), mozzarella sticks, chicken rolls, i think they have knishes, etc. I asked for my son's pizza "not to hot" but when he got it, it wasn't heated at all. I wasn't that hungry but knew I should eat something and opted for an order of garlic knots knowing the kids would eat at least 1 each. The knots where fresh, and tasted good because of that pp fact alone. There wasn't much flavor to them though. And my daughter said her beef patty was spicy so she didn't eat most of the meat. (Yes, I know they don't actually make the beef patties- they just heat them up. Perhaps they ordered the wrong one?). Masks are no longer mandatory here & social distancing is not enforced. Also, a family was allowed to enter and sit with their dog. I love dogs, but they don't belong inside restaurants/diners/pizzerias. I gave 4 stars because most of the time the food is good, and the staff are nice to the customers. They might beef at each other, but they're nice to the customers! lol. When I moved to the neighborhood I stopped in a few times hoping for a great slice - always mediocre to disappointing. However, the other night a bunch of us came in after a night of karaoke at the Old Carriage Inn nearby and I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered my late night slice, it came back toasty warm, very edible and actually pretty decent. Would I special order a pie from this place? Never. I've somewhat grown up with this pizza shop. I'm from neighboring Sunset Park, but my cousins grew up four blocks from here, and since I visited them almost every weekend-- we came here a lot. Also, my JHS was about ten blocks away; so, I can say I've had my fair share of Smiling Pizza. The shop is located right above the F train (7th Avenue station) what will always stick out is the prices right above each food item. Certain items are a bit high in price, but the pizza, knots, and beef patties are typically on point. They usually have four or five guys behind the counter which allows for only a short wait to place your order. I ordered a pie and it was ice cold, all the cheese slid off the pie and was just left in front of my door. my neighbor rang my bell to let me know the pizza was there. this was ordered with grub hub. I've been ordering from Smiling and eating there since the late 70's. when I called i was told they are not responsible for the delivery drivers. I've never had a problem with Smiling until now. They have lost a loyal customer. how do you not stand by your service. they didn't want to hear it. I got satisfaction from grub hub who issued a refund. Let me start by telling you that my family orders from Smiling at least twice a week @ about $75 per order. There was never really a problem because it's NYC fast and furious, I don't expect over-the-top courtesy.. BUT, this past time pushed me over to write a review - here's what happened: I called (917) 905-3403 - their number from Seamless. Someone picked up the phone, I told them I'd like to place an order for delivery: * he said, "can you hold for a minute?" * I said "no problem" * 8 minutes on hold (because I can see the duration on my phone) * the hold system rang their line again, and no one was picking up * after the 10th ring, I hung up * I called the same number 4 more times, but kept getting hanged up on * after my fifth call, someone picked up * I told him that I'm a loyal customer who orders about $150 per week from them, and that I had been on hold for 10 minutes * nonchalantly, he said, "the phone's are messed up" * AND THEN he said, "hold please" * so I said, "wait, you're going to put me on hold after 10 minutes of hold? what kind of service is that? can I speak to the manager?" * he said, "I am the manager" * I said, "what's your name?" * he said, "Alex" * I said, "you're going to put me on hold again?" * (silence) * I said, "never again, Alex" * he said, "no problem" * and then he hung up. No acknowledgement, no apology, but instead trying to put me back on hold. I understand they're busy, but I'm one of the people that have gotten their business to be busy. But to hell with that... I've known this store for 30+ years. The older owners/managers were real people. They don't sugar coat relationships, but they were at least responsible and had some semblance of customer service. This place is fine, an average pizza spot that's down the block from me. I usually just get a cheese slice, but it's really not the best. In my opinion it's too cheesy and undercooked. That being said, I do usually like a crispy slice which might be why. All in all it's good pizza, but it's overpriced. If you need a slice and you're in the area, its a good option. This is such a mom and pop pizza place. It's Smiling! I think it's been around for at least over a decade and you always see families milling around here in the heart of the Slope. I was tipsy stumbling in this weekend and decided to try a slice for the first time. Just plain pepperoni and cheese, please. A little greasy but it hits the spot. A little over-priced for what it is. A one topping slice was $4.25. Boo. But I would equate it with a Brooklyn neighborhood version of Rays. The cheese and sauce ratio is spot on and it tastes delicious. It's just nothing special or to write home about. Clean restaurant and people were sitting there eating in at around 12am. Why 2 stars? Here's why I took one start off because they weren't friendly. I don't speak for other customers but I am sure they'll agree. When we walk in we want to feel welcomed. I am not saying I want fireworks going off and then dancing but a "Hey welcome to Smiling pizzeria, what would you like?" Or any type of welcome would be great. Instead they are just doing their own thing until you have to wave or speak up to get their attention. Took off my second star because they charge you a card fee of $1. Now I know what you're thinking "it's just a dollar" but my point is customers shouldn't have to pay a fee at all. Some stores lie about being charged when they accept payment off a credit/debt card. Just to make the customer buy more food to make more money off it. Ok maybe the first two reasons you guys might not agree with but my last star I took off you will agree with me. They're really not bad by any means, with a crust slightly thicker than the New York norm they're actually a nice change of pace and really one of the better corner pizzerias. I've been to this pizzeria twice, with the same intentions both times. I was hungry, it was late, I wanted pizza...and they were open. Do I think they have good pizza? It's your standard New York pizza slice. Nothing extra ordinary, neither is it next level, it's just a NY pizza slice. The staff is really friendly and they accept cash or credit. Yes, they have restrooms just in case.... There mozzarella sticks were not that great so I don't suggest getting the mozzarella sticks, I do suggest there white slice and there regular slice with pepperoni or without, but who doesn't love pepperoni??
