I know it's kind of mean to give a pizza joint 2 stars when they're not trying to be fancy to begin with..but we have to be honest with NYC pizza. There's $1 pizza, there's Everyday Nice But Forgettable Pizza, there's Fancy Pizza, there's OMG Tourist Pizza(which can overlap with Fancy Pizza), and there's everything else. Smiling Pizza wants to be Everyday Nice But Forgettable Pizza. That's not a dig. How often do you eat pizza are ask, 'damn, this isn't half bad, where is it from?' and the response is often, 'I forget, it's from that place in that neighborhood'. Unfortunately Smiling Pizza would be better off aligning their prices to be a $1 slice place. You can't really complain about $1 pizza. Went back not long ago, not only was I happy to see they were still there, they had the same decor from when I was a kid and their menu is still amazing! As hard as it is for me to diss on an establishment with the name "Smiling" in it... I don't like this place, and I hate myself when I end up here because it is simply the closest, most obvious place that's open in the wee hours or just right there in your face when you get that sudden only-pizza-will-do hunger pang. Even the plainer slices verge on four dollars, and the cheese never quite melts back together again. The mushroom slice is especially atrocious because of the obvious canned quality (or lack thereof) of the topping. The servers are nice anough (one of the guys actually gave me a break when I was short a dime or something, so in a way, I'm an ingrate for writing all this), but have a kind of leering and lackadaisical presence. In the later hours of the night, all three or four of them might be too busy talking to a drunk woman or some other personality to realize you're waiting to give them money for their crappy food. Yet, the business does well enough to pay rent on almost an entire corner block of space, which manages to feel forlorn and crowded all at once with a diverse range of customers who all have one thing in common...they're without. I've fallen prey to here probably over ten times, and as I walk out with the already cold and congealed 4-dollar triangle of mediocrity in my grubby hand, you can bet I'm doing anything but smiling. You shouldn't be expecting top-shelf liquor, but bottles and plastic shot glasses for customers is certainly something worth mentioning. Classy? Not so much. Considerate? You bet. Plus, Smiling Pizzeria is open late. Perched above the 7th Ave. F train stop, it's also the shortest stumble to sustenance after a night out on the town. This shop is right on the corner when you get off the F train so is a convenient place to grab a slice of you will be headed to the hospital---- but don't. Although the place is clean and the service is good the pizza (especially for Brooklyn) was sub par. It's no secret that the chicken rolls here (and, by association, the chicken parm heroes) are the best in the neighborhood. It's probably no secret that they deliver til 1am, even during the week! What I did find suprising/amazing/soooo old school was when I stopped in on New Year's Eve and they had bottles and plastic shot glasses set out for their patrons. Once I got my order TO GO, I walked out to at least try to enjoy my slice. I basically cut the top of my mouth on the crust, it was so burnt. The cheese tasted like a big chain that still uses cardboard for their base. This was the gourmet pizza I was getting? Very Good Pizza! I have been coming here for over 10 years and the good taste is consistent. I usually order either a Pepperoni Pie or an individual Pepperoni slice. *The only thing that I don't like about their Pepperoni Pizza is the amount of grease that they use. I suppose that the grease is a part of what makes the pizza taste so good but if someone is a health nut, then they may have a problem. Overall, I recommend this place. I have been going here for years for their salad pizza. It's nothing crazy but always tastes pretty fresh to me, and is a good lunch deal for $3.50. Granted they let me use the bathroom before I ordered, but I did not like the vibe. When I was waiting to order and standing at the counter, eye contact was barely made. Having grown up in the Slope means plenty of Smileys Pizza as real Slopers call it. Coming home every year would not be the same if each day I did not stop n have 2slices with a grape drink. Even a friend of mine who I brought their 15 years ago asked if I was stopping by Smileys, last night I saw my friends mom n she asked had I stopped by Smileys. We Love it. Over the years we lost Big Tony the delivery driver n the brothers have grown the father semi-retired but they never forget you n treat you as familia. Time has passed but the Pizza remains número 1. This place is solid**, nothing more, nothing less. When you're in a rush, need a quick bite, or are just in the mood for a slice, it's a dependable spot. If you've ever had one of the "Ray's" derivative slices around the city, (which if you haven't, incidentally, means you've been living under a rock or in a cave somewhere) it's very similar. Slices on the thicker side, commercial (ho-hum) sauce and cheese, with a pretty heavy impact. Meaning, if you are the type to go to Joe's Pizza and get two slices to feel satiated, you probably only need one slice here. That's not necessarily good or bad, it just is. Sort of like Smiling Pizza. It just is. **Anecdote: Not sure if this is customary for them, but I happened to grab a slice here during the day on new year's eve. To celebrate, they had an entire tray of liquor and shot glasses out, offering customers (seemingly unlimited amounts of) whatever they wanted. That's a power move in my book. read more

I've visited a few times and the place is growing on me. It's not a destination joint with a wood or coal fired pie - nor are they doing anything fancy/unique in terms of ingredients. And it's pretty much the "eat quick and leave, laminated booth/plastic fork type joint." But for a corner slice joint, it's pretty good. The crust is firm, not floppy. They pile on a decent amount of whatever ingredient is featured (chunks of chicken versus a few granules). And they aren't stingy on sauce, nor do they overdo it. This is my (and all the young people who live in the area's) go to place for a quick slice! The location is small and has only about 8 booths for seating. Try to get there BEFORE school lets out or after 5pm. It can be a bit confusing if it's busy as the gentlemen working there are moving quickly. You'll have to be a bit aggressive at times and make some eye contact. A slice is about $2.50, which is pricey in my opinion, but it hits the spot. I've only tried the plain cheese and white pizza slices. Other friends have had the veggie pizza and enjoyed it and my mom had the cheese calzone and they baked it to order to her taste. The bathroom requires a key and you'll need to ask for it from the folks at the register. The seating is the hard plastic non-padded ones. read more

He told me he gave up the Caddy to drive a hybrid car to help preserve the earth. The kicker is that he did this 4 years ago well before the new green trend.Regarding the product. I can't help but love this place. They have one pizza with no sauce or cheese. It's just a really fresh salad on top of the pizza dough. I was happily surprised to find something like that there. Once again, another of my frequent visits confirms my long-standing views of this place : a great and convenient asset to the Park Slope neighborhood. This is one of the restaurant establishments that makes life pleasant here. It is a no frills neighborhood pizza store, with quick, friendly service and always hot and fresh pizza for eat-in, delivery, or takeout. No inflated prices. Actually, what we get most often is a chicken cutlet hero, which is just large enough for two to share. The garlic knots are great too, though maybe a little greasy. When it comes to a whole pizza, we order a salad pizza. This pizza consists of a very fresh topping of lettuce and ripe, red tomatoes. Combined with the regular tomato sauce and the crunchy pizza crust, it is a tasty, low calorie treat. Whether we are ordering a regular pizza or our usual hero, it takes about 10-15 minutes from order to completion. This is a godsend when we are tired at the end of the day and not anxious to cook or there is nothing tempting at home. There is always a flow of humanity at the store picking up or eating in. There are times we emerge from the subway, about 6 steps from their doorway, and go in for a relaxing and quick meal. Don't look for fine dining decor, Italian slyle, because all they have are Formica tables, paper plates, and plastic utensils. However, if you can get past that and concentrate on the food, you too may come to realize that some of their offerings are actually tastier than at some fancier Italian joints with white table cloths. It is only when you leave NYC and order pizza and other Italian dishes in some other locales that you realize how terrific it often is here and how easy it is to take places like this for granted. In summary, I am not comparing Smiling Pizza to the very top pizza places in the City, merely saying it's damn good considering taste, convenience, and cost. read more
