Will not come back to this place and would absolutely not recommend. This is the most overrated place and does not live up to what a New York deli should be. Came here a few years ago and wasn't impressed but figured I would give it another chance since so many people like it. I ordered the super beef hero with a small side of fries and a side of hot gravy. They charged me $1.50 for a half a cup of gravy that was ice cold. I had to go back inside and ask them to heat it up. The gravy was tasteless, the quality of the meat is poor, and the meal overall had no flavor. The side of fries was okay, you could tell they're definitely bought frozen. Whole meal cost $20, which is way overpriced for what I got, and it didn't even fill me up. If you want food from a real New York deli, drive right past this place and go to Brand's in Long Beach. read more

I came here for breakfast because I was craving an egg sandwich. It was close to where I was so- headed over to get a "to go" sandwich. I got there at about 9am and it was a weekday so- I assume the morning rush hour people were already at work for the day. There was no line, just walked up and ordered an egg sandwhich on a bagel with well done bacon and cheese. The guy behind the register was very nice and the service was super fast. I think I waited just a little over 5 mins for my breakfast to be done. The sandwhich was very good as well. I like when I ask for "well done bacon" and they actually serve it well done! I just started working in the area and came across this gem of a deli last Monday, and have been there every day since. They make actual omelettes in the morning that are actually omelletes, fluffy and all. The sandwiches are what a sandwich should be (which most deli's these days don't give anymore) and the overall food, service and selections are as good as it gets in a deli. It is a bit pricey though as I spend 20 dollars a day on breakfast, a snack and lunch so my daily visit won't be as frequent as soon as I get my ass to Home Depot to pick up a refridgerator for my office and can bring lunch,. Best deli around. Food is delicious- you'll get a better breakfast here than at any restaurant in town. It's sparklingly clean, the staff are attentive and FAST, and we always feel welcome and well taken care of. They have all the staples including takeaway soups and salads for a quick lunch. Just tried this place today and it's great! The service is quick and the food is delicious. I got turkey, fresh mozzarella, tomato and balsamic dressing on a whole wheat wrap. You'll want to read this review. Long time customer of what USED TO BE the top deli in the area, hands down. The service, the food quality, the speed, the selection - they had it all. Until the former owner recently sold the business (2021). But it was all THAT owner. Place ran like a fine tuned machine. You never waited to put orders in, he had them asking the second you walked in, and they turned everything around. QUICK. Since then...it may look the same, but it most certainly does NOT operate the same. And while prices used to be high, the service made it worth it. Service now - GOD AWFUL. I don't spend the time to write reviews...so if I'm that rare person who doesn't resort to this, you have to expect the experience was nothing short of epic disappointment. Just waited 30 minutes for two egg wraps. You read that right. Staff is predominantly disengaged, and clearly untrained. Something the former owner would never allow. Now...the business runs slow. From orders, to service...and obscenely overpriced items...it's no longer worth the wait at all. It's really a shame. There isn't a lot of competition in the area, which is why they still have business...but don't at all be fooled. This is NOT the same place it was for years, even if they kept it looking that way. That's why it is not worth your business or time. There should be standards...and businesses should take these types of reviews seriously. So if you read reviews....take this one as an unfortunate but accurate depiction of the change in this business, from someone who was a long time customer that routinely spent the money for great food and fast service. Just ate here for the first time. Great sandwiches; I got my turkey with lettuce but they use Romain lettuce. I don't like Romain but whatever I picked it out and next time I just won't get lettuce no biggie. We also ordered a Philly cheese steak and chicken cutlet sandwiches; both hot and seem fresh cooked. Today was my first visit to the Smith Street Deli. It surely will not be my last. On an island full of mediocre and lousy delis, it was a breath of fresh air to find this gem. It was recommended to me by a friend who lives in Merrick and raves about this place. The line was nearly out the door, and I thought about leaving, but they were amazing at getting orders done and folks out very fast. I'm glad that I stayed. Lots of variety,salads, soups, hot and cold sandwiches and a large menu of specialty sandwiches and such. The rolls and hero bread was a real difference maker. Nothing makes a good sandwich into a great sandwich like really good fresh bread! A really good place with friendly and efficient staff and good food. Among the best of the delis that I have tried! I yelped bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches this morning and this was the first place that came up and I'm glad i went. The sandwich was really good and they actually gave extra crispy Bacon. Nothing is worse then rubbery bacon on an egg sandy. I also liked the low fat muffin top they had by the registers. I question the low fat part because it that delicious. Not over priced at all. Two sandwiches and one had hash browns on it, one med iced coffee and a medium hot coffee and the muffin top came to about $16. Which is much less than the deli i usually go to. OK, last time I was here (probably a dozen years ago), the place was half the size and had no parking lot. Apparently business has been good. Went here on a recommendation and I'm glad I listened. My wife had a roast beef on a roll while I opted for a super beef hero. Both sandwiches were quite yummy. Other then the cost, somehow it cost me $20 with 2 bags of chips, we left with full tummies and smiles on our faces. Will definitely pop in again next trip though. read more

This is one of the better delis I have been to on Long Island, it is legit. Today they accidentally put home fries on my bacon, egg & cheese hero, this might be one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten in life. Whatever you do, go here and get a breakfast sandwich with home fries on it or get them on the side, they are amazing. The breakfast at this deli is really, really good. For lunch, they have a number of paninis already prepared that you can have heated. I have had the Tuscan a number of times, it has thin slices of fried eggplant, broccoli rabe, mozzarella & roasted red peppers...very good. Lastly, they have delicious muffins in a number of different flavors, so far my favorites are apple cinnamon and blueberry crumb. I've read these reviews and the negative comments in some of these crack me up. There are few places i can come to when as soon as i walk in they know my name. Food is always on point although i usually stop in for just breakfast. Their sandwiches are always on point. The deli definitely has a a LI feel where some people who may not be accustomed to fast moving counter people who need you to hurry the hell up! Btw i need you to hurry the hell up to! No one wants to wait on an indecisive customer. Do us all a favor step off the line and when you're ready then order. I'd give it 5 stars but it's busy and can take a while to get your order in. We have always been happy with the sandwiches/paninis/wraps and salads we have gotten from here. All are generous portions with plenty of meat. I would recommend you have them read back your order and double check it as today one of the sandwiches was wrong when I got home (sausage egg and cheese instead of the bacon ordered). Service has always been friendly and reasonably quick. I would recommend their grilled chicken panini with fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, and pesto sauce- ask for a side of balsamic if you like- but very good as is with the pesto. Have come here a few times and have yet to be disappointed. Always busy but it never takes too long for your food. The biggest thing for me is when I get my bacon egg and cheese with hot sauce, there's actually a lot of hot sauce! Finally a place that doesn't skimp!! I've been here several times and I have yet to be disappointed. The sandwiches are priced around what I consider to be normal here on Long Island, roughly around 8 dollars, some may say thats a big steep but it's worth it! In fact, sometimes the sandwiches are big enough to hold you over for the day, depending on the person of course. Smith St has just about anything you'd want from a deli; soups, sandwiches, gyros, custom salads, and definitely not least, some delicious half and half iced tea. Good sandwiches, but THIRTY minutes just for one hero? Dumb. And any time, and I do mean anyyyyyy time, you call to place an order for pickup you'll have to wait at least thirty minutes as well!! Literally they won't even touch your order until twenty mins after you call which boggles my mind. My FINAL negative experience at Smith Street was yesterday afternoon although it certainly wasn't my first. Sure the foods good enough but the service is deplorable. Rude, Ruder and just plain disinterested. Now we live close and have been semi regular customers for over 3 years. There's a few nice guys but most left and there's only one now and for some odd reason he's always in the back cooking when I go in lately. The long story short is yesterday I called in two sandwiches to be picked up. The man, named Anthony, was rude and aggravated with me for daring to order food. I asked would it be easier if I ordered my cold cuts over the phone or when I came in and he snapped back " I'd say now so its ready when you get here!" Ok I was just asking, the guy had been obnoxious the whole order I thought he'd climb through the phone and slap me when I asked for bologna and cheese! I was told a half hour, fourty minutes later I arrived to get my things. And low and behold they weren't ready. But did he say sorry it'll just be another few minutes or we're working on it shouldn't be too much longer? Things I say every day because I work in the food business with customers. No he said to the other worker in a gruff tone "it ain't ready yet". So I waited calmly and quietly finally another kid rings me up and after I've paid says " just waiting on the sandwich". Now were talking just under an hour from when I made the call and no apology nothing but attitude for coming in to pick up and pay for my food. The sandwich comes out and is given to Anthony who throws it in the bag and doesn't even say you're all set but pushes the bag at me? And to make it all the worse when I arrive home after being treated so disrespectfully I look in my bag and they left part of my order out. So folks I do not recommend smith st deli. From now on ill brave the lines at My Hero were the food, prices and service go above and beyond the rude dude fest at Smith St! read more

I used to really like this place. The. Salad bar was great but recently the quantity of food has dropped and the prices have stayed the same. The quality of food is still top notch but quantity for for dollar has dropped. It's a very busy place and there is a very small parking lot. Other than that it's street parking and most of the time you have to walk a bit to get there. read more
