Decided to venture to a BQQ place we haven't been too near our house. We went around five. I enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich, a different flavor which tickled my taste buds. The coleslaw was a great addition to the sandwich. Tried a couple of their home made sauces, I was more content with the one on the sandwich alone. I was disappointed in the amount of burnt ends for the platter. They were tender though and the sauce was good. Would go try again. KC born and raised, been around smokers my whole life -- Smoke Town BBQ is the real deal. I'm not easy to impress when it comes to barbecue. I've smoked meat for years, grew up eating KC BBQ, and I know when someone's cutting corners. These folks aren't. The meat has that true slow-smoked flavor, tender and clean. Sauce is solid, but honestly the meat stands on its own -- that's how you know it's good. What I really appreciate is how they treat people. My friend Michelle is allergic to tomatoes, and every time we call ahead they make sure she gets her food with absolutely no sauce, no tomato mop, no hassle. Just good people going the extra mile. Cute little bbq spot that reminds me of Wyandotte and Rosedale. They do offer online ordering but it was turned off when I tried so we headed to the restaurant. They have a decent amount of parking. The inside isn't huge but could probably accommodate 50 or so people. The restaurant was also clean. The individual at the front and who took our order was friendly and helpful. They were pretty steady and had run out of a few items. I went with my usual bbq order. I got the large sandwich with beef and sausage. You can choose any 1-2 meats and they do offer small and medium sizes. My boyfriend got the same sandwich but with beef and ham. It really reminds me of Wyandotte bbq. The beef was average but good. Same with the sausage. My boyfriend liked his sandwich but did note that the meat was sliced thinner. He liked that it lessened the chewiness. We also got an order of fried mushrooms. They were ok. I'd probably get something else next time. We got a large fry to share. They were crinkle cut and you can have them put seasoning on them. We did and it was good. I'd definitely get fries again. We also got a single coleslaw and bbq beans. I'm generally not a fan of either at any bbq spot. This was no exception. My boyfriend said both were good, he preferred the coleslaw. We're forever driving past SmokeTown BBQ, commenting that we needed try to it someday. Yesterday was the day! The inside is perfect BBQ decor, wood paneling, tvs, neons, and of course a Kelce Swift cutout that looks like a cute picture opportunity. You order at the counter, and they bring it out. Everyone we encountered was so nice, and the food came out quickly. My first time order is always a brisket/beef sandwich and either onion rings or beans. Although I've heard amazing things about the mac and cheese, we didn't try it. The bun was soft and fluffy, the beef sliced thin (the way I prefer it), and the medium sandwich was the perfect size for me to demolish after skipping lunch. The onion rings were perfectly crispy, and delicious, but I can't confirm if they're made in house, for those who quest for the perfect onion ring. There were regular, sweet, and spicy sauce options, we didn't try the sweet, but liked the regular and the spicy. We'd definitely go back and try more things, especially the Mac and piggy, and the smoked Gouda balls. read more

Basic sandwich here is very large and not at all basic. I had the Smoke Town Throwdown (brisket and more) and my wife had the Dominator (burnt ends) sandwiches. W sides of fries and rings. Real good. It survived the 20 min drive home without getting soggy. Very tender, great flavor, not at all fatty (I'm lookin at you, Blind Box). Not cheap but frankly we could split a sammy and a side and save 50%. Meanwhile I'm Looking forward to the leftovers. This place should be busier. Great service and nice folks working in here. Place was very clean. I had the two meat platter. Approx 1/4-1/3 lb of turkey and sliced brisket, sliced Texas toast to component. Also got the slaw and baked beans. Slaw was fantastic. Not " soggy" at all with a great crunch. If it was acid based, I could not tell. Beans were good. A little on the sweet side with a slight kick. Turkey was cooked perfectly. Very tender and tasted great on its on. Brisket was slightly over cooked and sliced VERY thin. They covered the meat in some sort of tomato based sauce similar to marinara if not marinara itself. I did not enjoy the sauce. Very bland and took away from whatever flavor the meat may have had. Tried their 50/50 sauce and was not homemade at all(not that they claimed it was, just what I prefer) and tasted like a mixture of your generic sweet bbq sauce mixed with a generic hot sauce. No lie detected in the name 50/50, but wasn't that great. For 23$ (including drink) I think expectations were a little high. For me, it has potential. Might comeback and try the meat again, without the marinara. Came to eat around lunch and had no wait time. read more

I've been to Smoketown a couple of times recently. The service has always been great, and the folks that work there seem to go out of their way to be friendly and provide excellent service. It definitely has an old school BBQ joint feel to it when you walk in. I think their burnt ends are delicious. I thought the sausage was good, although a bit on the drier end. Nothing a little BBQ sauce couldn't fix. For sides, I've tried the fries, cheesy corn, and the BBQ beans. I thought all were good and compliment the BBQ nicely. This place doesn't carry the name of the more popular KC bbq joints, but hangs in there with some decent food. Met a friend there on a Monday (a lot of other options are closed on Monday's) and had the special. A one meat sandwich with fries and a drink. I had the brisket and he had sausage links. The sandwiches were a good size for the daily special price. The brisket was tender and flavorful. A good mix of bark and fatty pieces. My friend said the sausage was good too, good flavor. We both felt the fries were just ok. The service was friendly and the food came out quick. There was not a lot of seating, but plenty for the lunch crowd. How many BBQ restaurants does one town need? I guess one more. I've been to plenty of KC BBQ joints over the years and smoketown can hold it's own with the long-standing big dogs in town. It's nice to go to a BBQ place and not wait 30 minutes to order a meal. We were able to order and find a space to sit quickly. We had the smoked chicken dinner and pulled pork sandwich. both were good. no complaints about the side of cheesy corn and cole slaw either. I've heard such amazing things from here and each time we passed this place we wanted to stop. We finally decided to try it out this week. Sigh, I wanted to love it, but it fell slightly short of wonderful. I think my husband said it best afterwards, "well, that was safe." A weirdly correct statement. It was good, but a little bland. We took turns sampling each other's sandwiches and each time, just simply shrugged. The pulled pork could use more tang in the slaw, especially because the pork itself, has no flavor. The Throwdown was good, but needed something to jazz it up, like jalapeños or banana peppers. A little acid to cut all the meat. My son enjoyed his burnt end sandwich, but thankfully, we removed the paper from the cheese before eating. Odd. I'm willing to bet they had an off day and give them another shot, but I won't be running back immediately. read more

The one meat dinner ($10.95) included a good portion of meat, two sides, a piece of Texas toast, and a pickle spear. The brisket was flavorful, lean, and moist, while the baked beans and cole slaw were okay. The dining area was nice, spacious, and new with classic rock music and plenty of TVs. We love supporting local and tried the food here twice before writing this review. I ordered the sampler plate and everything was on the side of dry. Sausage had really good flavor but it was chewy. The turkey and brisket were sliced thin and felt a little tough. The side of fries was a touch under so it was kind of chalky. They buttered the toast, which was a nice touch. They have a vinegar-based bbq sauce that I thought was pretty good. The spicy bbq tasted like a spicy ketchup. I wonder if this is more of a sandwich place. There are a lot of bbq places within a 5-mile radius of where I live. I would consider Smoketown to be about average. read more

Throw Down is a massive pile of goodness. Tender meat, just the right amount of pepper jack cheese, crispy onions and bacon. I am sold. I've enjoyed quick and polite service. This place is not far from Ikea and it is much better than the chain restaurants nearby. I am coming back! read more

Excellent service. Family owned. Full slab sauced (not dry rub) was still very dry, but plenty of unmarked sticky bottles of sauces on the table to fix that. Beans tasted like canned. Fries & onion rings delicious. Bench seats have bad springs and were uncomfortable. My main concern was no hot water in the women's washroom. Place is haunted. I had hoped to really love this place as it's close to home, but it just wasn't great. We got the sampler and tried a few sides. The meats I tried were the brisket and turkey. They were okay. Sauce they provided was maybe a bit high on the heat so didn't catch much flavor. The mac and cheese was bland and the cheesy corn was as well. The beans, once past the heat of the sauce, had a very distinctive canned Pork and Beans taste and texture. I'll definitely take my business 10 minutes farther south and get much better quality. One final note: the staff does not wear masks. One person had a mask hanging loosely down toward her mouth. Three men in kitchen? Nope. Woman putting together my carry out order? Nope. The last time we were there will be the last time we will go there (12/24). My husband and I both ordered the 2 meat plate. We both chose pulled pork and burnt ends (which were regular options listed), along with sides of beans, coleslaw, and fries. Sadly I couldn't even finish my meal!! Me not finish BBQ - unheard of! The pork was so dry that even slathering it with sauce didn't help! The 6 bites of burnt ends on each plate were like sawdust - just an awful texture and flavor. The fries and beans were COLD. The coleslaw had a bad aftertaste to it. When we were reviewing the 60+ dollars we spent on our awful meal we discovered that the burnt ends were an up-charge of over $3 per plate, which was NOT indicated on the menu or mentioned by the cashier. Sadly I cannot remember ever having a worse BBQ experience. If you try it - I hope that you have a better experience than we did. We will choose to spend our hard earned money elsewhere next time. read more

This is my favorite bbq joint in OP. Locally owned, family run, tasty food. But my favorite part is probably the atmosphere. I grew up in a small town in southwest Missouri and Smoke Town feels like it was picked up from that tiny little rural community and dropped off here. Everyone is casually friendly, the interior is all wood and plush booths. Tucked into a little strip mall right on Shawnee mission parkway, this place is hiding right in plain sight. I don't live in KC but when I visit my I try to eat BBQ as much as possible. My go-to place is Q-39, but I heard about this new place and had to give it a try. Lunch on a Monday at 11 am. We placed our order online and found the menu and software very easy to use. It has an option to pay online or pay at arrival, so I paid on arrival, which I appreciated. Really loved the menu and especially that you could get full orders of both Burnt Ends and Pork Burnt Ends for only $8.99. The parking lot as easy access with plenty of open parking. At this time of day, the lobby was almost empty. The inside is not large so during social distancing days, at peak hours, it might be best to order carry out as we did. The food was ready right on time. Service was fast and very friendly. The food far exceeded expectations. I got both regular and pork burnt ends so I could try them and the portions were very large (again, only $8.99). I surprised but the pork burnt ends were my favorite. I don't normally eat Texas toast but I tried this and it was crispy and tasty. I had baked beans as a side and loved them. Highly recommend this place if you are in the vicinity of Overland Park. I will defiantly visit again on my next trip to KC. Q-39 is still my go-to spot, but this one is right up there with Joes as #2 for me. read more
