Anytime I go to shop in the stores behind the restaurant, the yummy smell of BBQ is in the air! I got the burnt Ends platter this evening delivered to me via DoorDash. I also ordered an appetizer of KC potato skins with burnt ends. The styrofoam container that the skins were in, had melted through and attached itself to the styrofoam box my main course was in. To be noted, this did not affect taste at all. It was totally yummy! Also of note, the sour cream that came with the potato skins was not on a container, but put directly in the container with no way of holding it together. Pic attached. For probably the third Father's Day in a row my son and daughter-in-law took my wife and me to Smokehouse Barbecue for a meal. This was Friday evening and they appeared moderately busy. My son spent about a hundred bucks on the meal and left about $20 for a tip. We had finished our meal and were talking and finishing our drinks post meal, when a young lady, who was not our waitress came to our table, clearly nervous and apologetic, to inform us that her manager was placing a time restriction on tables and that we were being asked to leave. In all my years I've never had this happen to me, and quite frankly it was embarrassing. If they had time limits on tables then why not post a sign out front? Or why choose only our table, when the much larger table in the corner who had been seated as long as we had was unwrapping presents but not being asked to leave? It wasn't that we were asked but how it was done, very cowardly by the manager, and not evenly enforced. I'm a long time customer of Smokehouse, but I will not be back after this. Miss Manager, have the courage to do your own dirty work, and warn customers that you're going to enforce a policy like this. Thanks for tarnishing my Father's Day 2025! read more

Family owned, family oriented, large bbq restaurant with a big menu. The sauce is smokey and tangy. Rich and bold. I like it. Get the sweet corn nuggets as an appetizer. The first bite will be peculiar, but they surprise you after the second. The baked beans are smokey sweet goodness, the burnt ends tender, but my fries came out cold. The portions are huge. You definitely get your money's worth. Save room for dessert. The sunshine cake was fyre. Colorful, super moist, with great frosting and a nice lemon marmalade (?) on top. read more

Smokehouse BBQ on 39th in Independence was the worst smoked meat I have ever had and I called today to lodge my complaint--quite nicely I might add. The "manager on duty" took my call. I told her that the ribs were too tough and hard to eat and the brisket had no flavor. I added that if one has to rely on the sauce to make it flavorful then you all don't know how to smoke meat. We spent $100 on that garbage. I asked if I was missing something? maybe a bad smoke day? She said, "it sounds to me like you just don't like our meat"! No other words came out of her mouth except to explain they have had the same pit maters for years. No care of concern for the customer - AT ALL. We went here on a whim me and the hubs. I think he is going to try to sample all KC has to offer in BBQ. We got there and there was no wait. Our server was nice but I had to keep asking for my drink. Not a refill, my actual drink. I had ice tea. Once we got our appetizer (BBQ nachos that only had a slither of sauce on it), she brought my drink. For our meals, I ordered the wings with Cajun sauce, grilled veggies and fries. Hubs got the Chefs Special. When our food was brought out, my fries were missing. It took a minute to get them but they came. The food was good. My wings were cooked perfectly and the sauce was really good. Hubs really liked his meal too. He ordered a slice of lemon cake to go. This cake was orange. Didn't look like lemon at all. When he tasted it once we got home, it also didn't taste like lemon. Citrus yes, lemon no. Smokehouse Barbecue serves up some good food, but toes the line between barbecue and smoked meats. The menu isn't super fancy and focuses on the basics: ribs, beef, pork, ham and chicken, but also adds in some dishes that aren't exactly barbecue, but taste mighty good if they're smoked, such as steak, pork chops, shrimp, salmon and fish. Same thing with the sandwiches, you have your choice of sliced meats and burnt ends, but you can also choose between a couple of smoked burgers or a chicken sandwhich if you'd like. I ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich which was topped with pepperjack cheese and grilled onions and served with a side of au jus. I asked for a loaded baked potato to round out the meal. It was a little different than what I was used to, but I thought it was pretty good. The restaurant is a decent size and was busy when I stopped in, but I didn't have any issues. We were completely disappointed in this KC barbecue as it was the worst barbecue we've ever had. There was minimal sauce on the pulled pork sandwich and adding more didn't help the dry meat be better. No choices of sauces were give either. Coleslaw didn't come with the sandwich, I had to swap out my fries for it. Their website states family owned since 1987 (which is why we went there, we like to help the independent places) and named "best barbecue in Kansas City". My work partner and I were working near by and couldn't resist the odorous emanation of deliciousness in the air. Wasn't wanting a huge lunch so I ordered off the lunch menu. The server was very professional and helpful also seemed to be happy to help us. After a short bit I was presented with the delicious smelling and tasty lunch displayed in my review photo. The pork and beef were smoked and prepared to perfection the beans were obviously a recipe for my barbecue God and the cheesy corn was a deliciousness I had never experienced before. Really good barbecue with good sides, though I wish it were better value. The baby back ribs were absolutely top notch - hard to imagine anything much better. The (beef) burnt ends were decadent and thoroughly enjoyed, though I _have_ had better. Next time we need to try the pork "burnt ends". The chicken was great, and I'm glad we ordered it. Never as tasty as fatty cow products, but Smokehouse does a great job with it. The kids loved the mac & cheese, though it was a bit runny for my tastes. Also, quite pale (no fake yellow color), which for me is a plus but for the kids was a concern. Paying 28 bucks for a tray of it makes me a bit sad. The beans were great, and the coleslaw was perfect. Actually, the coleslaw was a bit soupy, so we ended up with a quarter of the container with just liquid when we were done. Use a slotted spoon! We happened to have shredded cabbage in the fridge and threw it into the liquid to make an entire second quart of the good stuff. My biggest complaint, and means I won't order them again, was the grilled vegetables. For $5.50, I expected more than a 4oz styrofoam container of maybe 6 vegetable chunks. They were definitely good, but it was embarrassing that a pair of these $5.50 grilled vegetable containers couldn't even fill up a tea saucer. read more

I love KC BBQ. I love the smokey flavor of the meats here. Today I ordered the burnt end platter which had two types of burnt ends on it. The pork was rubbery and didn't have the char I like. The beef was dry. As soon as they sat my plate down I could tell my meat had been cut a long time earlier and it had dried out under a heat lamp. I had trouble chewing and it was like swallowing leather. Zoom in on the pic and see the dryness for yourself. I did get to try some of the ribs from another person in our party of 10. The ribs were great! They were smoked to perfection but came short of falling off the bone. My wife ordered a burger this time and I've never seen the burgers here, but I have to say that next time I come back here I will be ordering a burger! I will never order burnt ends here again. If you want great KC BBQ this is not really the place. But if you want a great burger you may enjoy this spot. We were there over the noon hour on a Sunday and the place was more than half empty. No wait at all. I believe we were the only table our waitress had but she still forgot to bring me water. Everyone else at the table got a drink, and 15 minutes later we were still asking for my water. She must have counted wrong from the start and got confused that I never got a glass to begin with. So the two stars is more for a service issue then a food quality issue. I came in on my day off to enjoy their happy hour and watch the game. I asked to sit at the bar so could watch the game like I have done a 100-times before but was told I could not because they did not have a bartender. What needs to be understood for anyone reading this is that they have not have a bartender for months now and this has never been a problem before, even if they are busy. Oh I found me some Corn nuggets . I got the sample plate appetizer and sample plate meats both were so good had no room left when my meal came out. Appetizer had onion rings, corn nuggets, cheesy cauliflower, and fried zucchini chips. The burnt ends brisket as a little dry and the beef ribs were also a little dry. All the meats had no real flavor aspect. I had a side of spicy bbq sauce not sure if it was a good choice or not. The cheesy corn had ham I didn't know until it was stired up. First time I've had this. Average bbq. Nothing impressive. Sauce wasn't great. You can get a lot better literally anywhere else honestly. I will go elsewhere next time. We didn't get 2 plates, so I requested a second time. We finally got the second plate. The ribs were pretty good. I've had better (Jack Stack's, LC's.) The French fries were regular, nothing special. I'd pass on the fries. The ribs were juicy, the BBQ sauce, salty, but sweet. All in all, kind of boring, but okay. It's close. The only real BBQ between Independence 39th street and LC's. Man I love BBQ but this is not BBQ. If I had to guess I would say they use an electric smoker. The brisket tasted like a roast and no smoke flavor at all. Now I've been smoking for around 40 plus years and even a light smoke flavor like pecan is noticeable. The service by Dustin was great but cannot in good standing recommend as a BBQ restaurant. I ordered the Ring of Fire sandwich with pulled pork and brisket and let me tell you. This was awesome. The food here's always great. This is our "go to" because Red Robin's wait time is almost always through the roof and that "hangry" thing ain't no joke! Usually everything's great here, but tonight.. I don't know if it was an out of uniform employee or an employees friend, but there was someone in the dinning room who had no business being there and their presence and demeanor made me feel extremely unsafe. Good bbq for what feels like a chain restaurant. The staff was great & the place was very nice.

I so wanted this to be a great place and it was in most ways but fell short in others. I got the Burnt end platter but what I got were just chunks of meat. A few had some bark but most were just plain chunks of semi fatty meat. Very disappointing. Now for the good. The amount of food was good for the price. My wife got the pulled pork sandwich and enjoyed it. The coleslaw was very good. It was like KFC coleslaw which I love. The fries were nothing remarkable but were still very good. If it wasn't for the burnt ends this would have been a solid 4 stars. read more
