She remembers everyone's name and what they drink! I have gone here multiple times with family and my girlfriend. It has a great view of the canal. Nice seating outside. Delicious food and good service. Last time I went there with my girlfriend we had the pre fix dinner menu. We had the popcorn shrimp app. I always get that. Then for dinner she got the salmon and I got the steak. Both good portions and delicious. And for dessert we had the cheesecake which was also great. read more

Beautiful restaurant. Very nice bar. Pleasant staff. However the quality of the food was sub par to say the least. Took over 40 minutes to get shrimp cocktail which was frozen then thawed. Visited for the second time Tuesday night and just like our first visit, we were so impressed! There was a wait of about 15 minutes for the table of 4 and no, they do not take reservations for parties under 6-that's their policy! I'm not sure why other reviewers (Shayne) have a hard time understanding that. I cannot stand when someone writes a poor review over lack of information!! (*eye roll*) Moving along... I started off with the caesar salad which was HUGE. So many places give you 4 pieces of lettuce when ordering a salad but mine was beautiful-so much so that I had to pack most of my dinner which I enjoyed. My grandpa ordered the raw clams (loved them), chicken piccata (inhaled it). Hubs ordered the linguini fra diavolo (gone in minutes) and I loved my cajun pasta which I had to take home. Service was great. Donna the manager wished us a happy meal when we sat and checked back in with us after we were done with the food. Kyle our waiter was excellent as well and although the place was bumpin' (especially for a Tuesday night) he came around often to check on us. I hear the place was an old German restaurant but they certainly did away with any remnants of that. The coastal vibe is beautiful and not cheesy (see my review of Tres Palms) and the ambiance of dining on the water cannot be beat. It is so nice to go out on a Monday night with good friends and family. Smuggler's seafood soup, French onion soup, calamari and baked clams. Yes, yes, yes , and yes. Montauk Cod was a highlight and a plate full of deliciousness. Saffron rice and sautéed vegetables. Homemade (warm) chocolate brownie a la mode in the igloo outside paired with a hot cappuccino. When we arrived the owner was at the front desk when we arrived and could not have been more pleasant. He was training some new employees and told us that they were clearing tables outside by the water and it would be just a few minutes. We only waited about 5 minutes and the owner came by and seated us right by the water. The server came by right away and took our drink orders and was very attentive. It was clear that they were short handed and everyone was working very hard including our server. I could see the owner running around checking on things and directing the workers. Our food did take some time to come out and there was some confusion when it came out but no big deal and everyone was very friendly and accommodating. Our food was very good and we had the Mahi Mahi, lobster roll and wedge salad with grilled chicken. Overall a very good experience they are definitely trying hard and we will be returning. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon around 3pm. Biggest complainant was the hostess situation. There was a lot of tables available inside and outside when we arrived. We wanted to sit outside and have a few drinks and share an appetizer. When we approached the hostess inside she said we couldn't sit outside and do that and would have to sit at the bar or inside. A little confused, we said we were going to order an appetizer or two though and she kind of rolled her eyes and said ok 15-20 minutes. But noticing there weren't many tables taken we asked why the wait, just out of curiosity. And she said that 'the kitchen needed time to catch up and to wait at the bar until they give her the ok' .... I don't really know what that means after we just told her that we wanted to drink more than eat... but also being in the business you don't tell your clients your kitchen needs to catch up. It just doesn't look good, especially when you have plenty of open tables. ** Fast forward 5 minutes later: while waiting we were at the bar and ordered a drink, and as the bartender is making our drinks the hostess comes and gets us for our table ... WHAT?! We felt really scammed that she told us to go to the bar and wait and then within a few minutes called us for a table. Now the waiter isn't going to get that tip. Our waiter was Brendan and he was great. We felt horrible that we just ordered a drink at the bar but we explained what happened with the hostess. He said it was alright and understood, and that the kitchen was probably recovering from their brunch that ended before we got there. He told us their specials for the day that sounded great. We ended up getting crab cakes and oysters. Both were delicious and fresh. However, there were only two crab cakes that were smaller than our fist and they were $16...so $8 apiece. We thought there should at least be 3-4 of those size cakes or make the two cakes larger. We ended up getting another round of drinks with Brendan that were somehow taster than the previous round. Maybe a different bartender made them? Anyways, since we felt bad that Brendan kind of got a rip off of a table (it seemed like they did a routine system for the servers) we tipped him very generously and was on our way. The view is great. Based off our appetizers the food was fresh. The drinks the first round were weak but second round was delicious and you can taste the alcohol (Hurricane Sandys). We were just very annoyed at the hostess situation, it was unprofessional. I think I would come back again but hopefully don't have that issue again. read more

Very nice little spot on the water they had outdoor dining as well as inside. We had the little neck clams on the half shell, fried calamari, shrimp cocktail, lobster Mac and cheese. All of which were very good for dinner it was the seared tuna with soba noodles which was also very good. Service was slow but I'm sure they were doing their best during these crazy Covid times. The only good thing about this place is being on the water and sitting outside. The food is so expensive and has the smallest portions. It's nothing special at all if anything it's mediocre. Waitresses have attitudes and the owner is a slime ball. You will get a $200 bill and leave starving & sober. I don't understand why the ratings are so low because I absolutely loved it here! The ambiance outdoors right by the water is gorgeous and the food - or at least what I've had here - was great! I have to leave a review after the AWFUL experience I just had here. Keep in mind my family and I love this restaurant usually and are loyal customers... but have never met the owner until tonight. He verbally attacked my mother and I while my 1 year old baby was in my arms because his waitress messed up our order. It was extreme enough that he actually brought out the food on a hot plate that was mistakingly ordered and waved it in my toddler and my face. It was disgusting. He even had the nerve after the mix up from the waitress to say to us "so you guys just come out to dinner to order a salad and coconut shrimp?" (Which is not all we ordered we also had dinner for my child and an overpriced bottle of wine) - which either way it shouldn't even matter what we ordered! He had no shame screaming and yelling and the workers even came outside to apologize as we left. Avoid this place at all costs, really sad considering we loved this very local spot we've been going to for years. He is unhinged and needs to be held responsible. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and after reading other reviews I can see this isn't the owners first time treating customers this way. read more

Just discovered this gem. Brought in by the allure of Restaurant Week, we will definitely be back for the regular menu. Wasn't sure what to expect, but there wasn't a thing to complain about. The ambiance, decor, service, and food were all spectacular. From the accommodating staff who seated us at a large table near the fireplace (even though there were only 3 of us) so that my dad, (a senior and a veteran), would be warm, the waiter who constantly checked on us, and the chef(s) who clearly take pride in their creations, this was a wonderful dining experience. At 5:30pm through at least 7pm on a Thursday, it wasn't too crowded, so we felt comfortable eating inside despite rising covid numbers. Once we tried the food, I was really surprised there weren't more people there - it's so good! When the weather warms up just a bit more, there is a lovely patio with full-dining tables on the water, as well as stools sidled up to large serving windows at the bar, making the bar accessible from inside and out. We didn't order any liquor this time around, but the cocktails looked delicious. For dinner, I had the honey chipotle salmon and I ate every last bite; it's not on the regular menu, but I hope they have it again! My husband had short ribs and my dad had rack of lamb - everyone was so pleased not only with the taste, flavor, and presentation of the food, but with the portion sizes. The fried calamari was also fantastic. My dad, who can be critical, was surprised at how "plentiful" the appetizer, entrée, and dessert portions all were, even from the Restaurant Week menu. Our three desserts were raspberry cheesecake, nutella gelato, and warm brownie. Seated in the middle, I got to try a little of each, and I was in Heaven. The brownie was so chocolatey! I do wish the gelato came with whipped cream, but there was plenty on the cheesecake and brownie for me to steal. A few tips - they still have two heated igloos outside, available by reservation, and I believe there is no longer a charge to reserve, although you can't order from the Restaurant Week menu in the igloos. and the igloos are so cool looking, large, and comfortable, although the lounge-style setup (large cushiony couch style seats with small table in middle) is better suited for cocktails/apps rather than full meals. read more

Always a fan of happy hour...who doesn't like $6 cosmos? Or cheap food? Sad that we came here while it was pouring buckets outside because they have such a nice outdoor area but regardless the atmosphere was still cool and both bartenders were very friendly. My friend and I each got 4 cosmos (which aren't always included in the happy hour deals) but they were soo good! I haven't had one (or four) of those in awhile! We also split the Thai chili popcorn shrimp-first of all for a happy hour the portion size was huge! The night was going great until when it came time for the bill, he said that he was charging him for the steak that he refused and sent it for him to take home. We have been to Smuggler Jack's restaurant 2 times this summer. Our first experience for our anniversary was great. Atmosphere of outside seating, service and food. So, I suggested coming back with friends for a dinner out. What a mistake! As we were getting ready to ask for our check (service was VERY slow) a storm rolled in without warning. As everyone ran for cover you can hear glasses shattering and see things blowing around. On my way in I was struck by one of the table umbrellas and the force knocked me to the ground into the tables. One of the severs grabbed my hand and led me inside. I am thankful. The staff gave me ice and water. They were great. I had a cut on the side of my face, a swollen arm and knee (which I realized at Urgent Care). The owner came over twice to let us know they received no prior notice of the storm and sent the manager over to take my info, statement and denial of ambulance. I told him I was going to urgent care to be checked after sitting for an hour with ice on. The owner DID NOT comp our check just took my meal (an appetizer) off the bill. Even after we questioned him. His response, "What else do you want?" No offer to pay for Urgent Care bill. NOTHING!!! I was not the only patron hurt but was the worst of them and all he did was damage control, money was more important to him and covering his ass! I will NEVER go back. Nor my friends that were with me. Bad business. read more

I went here yesterday afternoon with my wife and child the weather was beautiful, the water looked great from our table, my beer was cold,and the wife's cocktail was delicious. The food was alright, it took just about an hour to come out. Everything was going fine up until the point when I heard I believe the manager/owner yelling at his employees and cursing. I was flabbergasted that my child had to hear that sort-of language at this "fine establishment". Out of all the resuraunts I've been to I have never had this type of experience before. As far as atmosphere during the summer this place is 5 stars. But when you account for the service and food the stars drop. Let me start with the service and how disorganized they are. Now I have been here multiple times and honestly everytime they seem under staffed and disorganized. The last time we went there we waited 15 min just to get menus and then another 15 to see our waitress. Luckly i wasnt starving our i would have left. Food wise their decent. Got the buffalo calamar which was decent and the mussels which were great. We also ordered a Caesar salad which they forgot about and had to ask twice for. When we finally got it i barely ate it because it was just large pieces of romaine with dressing thrown on top. Would deff say skip the salad. Bar is a nice area but once again there was only one bartender so it to a while to get drinks. read more

Knew that Smuggler Jack's had a curmudgeon owner, named Noel, from what I read on a few web sites, but I thought I'd give the restaurant a shot anyway. Well.....the place was pretty to look at, but service was just fair. We went for lunch and noticed the restaurant was quite empty. So, we figured the food would come out quickly. WRONG. We were not offered bread....probably have to ask for it, Noel is so cheap. And, please take note that there are no refills on soda or coffee.....again, Noel is all about cutting corners. I very rarely leave bad reviews, however, I had the worst ahi tuna of my life. I would have been happier if they just cracked open a can of tuna and put some mayo on it because honestly it just tasted like plain canned tuna. The ahi tuna was almost completely white. Where do I start with this restaurant. I guess with the good. Which is the atmosphere and our waitress was a sweetheart. However the whole experience was terrible. They don't accept reservations(or at least didn't on a Saturday afternoon). Which we were ok with as it was a gorgeous day and we'd hang out by the bar until our table was ready. We were a party of 3 and told it would be a 45 minute wait, so not too bad. It was not 45 minutes it was closer to hour and twenty five minutes. Normally I wouldn't care about waiting if I was hanging by the but the bar situation was terrible. There was bartender who was very nasty to us as soon as we sat, she rudely asked for id's (we're in our 30's) which ok she needed to ask but the tone she had was unnecessary. Then seem bothered by having to make us drinks. We saw others across the bar complaining about her as well and witnessed her yelling at the other bartender about limes not being cut. Besides the rudeness of the bartender the rest of the staff was VERY disorganized. Our waitress was very friendly, nice and apologetic for wait times. But the way they serve food is bizarre. They have multiple staff members bringing out food and they don't know where they are going. They walked up to a table that just finished paying there check and tried to give them an appetizer, when the table told him it wasn't theirs he proceeded to walk up to every table surrounding it asking if they ordered the fried calamari. Then just stood looking confused on where to go next. This happened several times. The food wasn't worth the wait either. We didn't even order dessert because we just wanted to leave. read more

There are so many places on Long Island to have a drink and a bite. That being said I experienced things at Smuggler Jack's that I could not fathom over the weekend. When we arrived we walked passed many empty tables and were told at the hostess stand that they were super busy and they would not seat us for at least a half hour. I thought that was odd but I liked the fact they were honest we shrugged our shoulders and left to go somewhere else. No harm no foul. We found another spot and had lunch but on our way home went back to Smuggler's because its a spot we always liked right on the canal in Massapequa and the wife likes the cocktails there. So we went back for a cocktail on a beautiful day to enjoy the place. We returned to a completely empty bar. I asked the barmaid if the bar was closed because there was a dishwasher glass rack sitting on the bar. This is where it gets weird. After the barmaid, who was nice took our order, an older Irish gentleman "From County Mayo" proceeded to take dirty glasses and slam them down on the bar right in front of us and leave them there. This was done on purpose because there was no one else sitting at the bar. The guy was rude & nasty to the other employees and to customers who "had the nerve" to ask him a question once people started filling the bar seats. In short, he was an a--hole. I'm sorry your bar is so busy and making so much money on a holiday weekend that you have to be a total d--k to your customers. I am not sure if he was the owner or one of the owners but I don't care. You don't do things like this. The drinks were good but so what. I can get a good drink somewhere they don't treat you like that. It's a shame because the location is good and the place is nice. We will not return. read more
