This place was so awesome! As soon as I walked in I knew I was going to love it. First of all, the name is everything. Very cool to learn about what a snallygaster is. Theres seating at the bar and a couple tables. We sat at the bar and were greeted quickly. We ordered a few drinks and the bartender was very nice to talk to. She is very passionate about the art of drink making and shared her tips and tricks. She makes a great espresso martini but would probably make you anything you asked for and would enjoy the chance to be creative. We ordered a brie platter which was decent. It was what we were looking for (not a heavy meal). They have wine for sale in the back, as well as assorted ciders, seltzers, and beers. A bit pricey in my opinion for certain items, but that's okay! They have coffee and t shirts for sale too. Dogs are allowed here and the locals seem to know each other and the bartenders know their names too. Very nice and homey to go somewhere that everyone knows each other!! Snallygasters accommodated our large group after we were told by another local spot that they don't take dinner reservations on weekends. Well it all worked out how it was supposed to because the food, ambiance, and service were great here! Water carafes were provided to the table & we ordered several drinks. All of the cocktails were beautiful, colorful and had curated understated garnishes. I enjoyed the jalapeño lime fizz, one of the non-intoxicants. Food took a little longer than expected but it was worth the wait. The red pepper pesto with linguine was creamy and rich and topped with fresh Parmesan. I only wish I'd had a piece of bread to sop up the sauce at the end! I'd be interested in trying their brunch and lunch options if I'm in the area again. Our server, Tom, was attentive. The bathrooms are clean and nicely warm thanks to a heater. We all had a great time. read more

We Vacation in the eastern panhandle several times a year and were looking for a new place to enjoy. We researched a bit and saw that Snallygasters was nearby had good reviews and the food pics looked good so we checked it out. Atmosphere was cozy with interesting decor and a lively crowd of customers in almost a full house as this was Sunday night. It took a little time to be seated and have our order placed but again they were busy so when our Waitress Piper came she was more than accommodating, super friendly and kind to us which made it all good. She guided us through the specials and since we were new to the restaurant steered is to some good choices. Our meals arrived hot fresh and delectable as this was fine cuisine and not your ordinary restaurant fare. We had a shrimp and chorizo dish and also a chicken and vegetable dish which both looked amazing and tasted even better. We were very pleasantly surprised and devoured both our entrees!! Lol! We even ordered dessert to go as we saw another table served a huge piece of ny cheesecake and being native New Yorkers on vacation we thought how appropo as we'll bring it to our room and enjoy as it was getting near there closing time (9pm.) We will definitely be back after enjoying so thoroughly our first picks as we are intrigued to see how the other dishes are. Our only small complaint would be the dessert we brought back to the room was a very small tiny slice and not like the one we saw in the restaurant being served to the table behind us and for ten bucks we were disappointed at its size even though it tasted great. Our waitress Piper made our evening enjoyable being so helpful and nice and we really appreciate that as the server can make or break your meal. Last thought many dogs allowed in restaurant. ( 3 at the time of our dinner.) We love dogs and we're petting the one nearest to us as it kept walking over to my wife as she was seated awaiting our order however it was inconvenient navigating the dining floor with so many pets about and eating with them in such close proximity was a turn off I will not lie and these were not service animals. Over all we really enjoyed Snallygasters as the service of Piper was great and the cusine superb and the atmosphere lively and clean. A bigger piece of dessert and more restrained pets would be an improvement in our opinion. Still all in all we give five stars and highly recommend. We will be back soon. read more

Weekend get away has started with an awesome stop. Warm inside and really unique decor keeps a person busy looking and wanting to stay. We were seated right away by Andrea and served great draft beers. Our food orders were salad so that left us plenty of time to check out and buy a bottle of wine for dessert after exploring Harper's Ferry. Canned beers to go maybe following us out also since we can not always find Devils Backbone Vienna Lager at our local stops. No surprise Fredericksburg monster here but was a fantastic must stop for anyone seeking an adventure in taste and a unique vibe. read more

Totally surprised by this little gem on the road into Harper's Ferry. Went with a large group of friends, they were gracious and happy to accommodate our party. Service was prompt and attentive as our mixed and indecisive group poured over the wine and beer lists (great selections!) and explored food choices. The atmosphere was clean, crisp, and relaxed. Very inviting. And as the drinks came out, we were thrilled to discover they were creative and delicious. I went with the baker brie board for my main, and it didn't disappoint. It wasn't exotic like you might find in a more pretentious restaurant, rather just thoughtful ingredients, plated with inspiration, and a joy to eat. Such a cute local wine bar and cafe! The to-go selection is rather pricey and I would perhaps avoid for that reason (despite it being an adorable local collection), but everything else was lovely. Setting is cute, homey, old timey. It felt warm and welcoming. Good selection of wine, beer, cocktails, and coffee drinks, including a few non alcoholic mocktails. Service was friendly and quick and then otherwise left us to enjoy our wine in peace. I love this style of service. We phoned-in our reservation (a good idea!) at Snallygaster's Cafe, out W. Washington St. in historical hilly Harpers Ferry. There's some street parking, plus parking out back that fills up when musicians are playing back there at The Barn bar and music hall. Since we were at the day-long Memorial Day Saturday concerts there, we just walked across the lot to dinner here. This is a nicely decorated smallish restaurant with some outdoor seating, maybe 30 seats at tables inside, and a 6-seat bar. It was quite busy at 6pm this Saturday, yet the friendly efficient hostess managed to seat several couples who didn't have reservations. We had prompt and frequent attention from our server, and started with some local craft beers from their really extensive list (which I think you can also get to-go). We ran through refreshing ice-cold tart grapefruit Citrus Tsunami IPA and bright Day Crush sour ale, also some fun sasquatch-themed dry Wild Trail IPA and rich Mothman Black (dark) IPA. You could easily make several evenings out of exploring their beers. That dark IPA was a new flavor to me, like a lightly-bitter medium-stout, worth seeking out! The menu is creative, well-made, and generous. We loved our start with the complex fresh flavors of their garlic basil balsamic bruschetta. The savory Chipotle Shrimp Linguine had large juicy shrimp and veggies in a lightly-spicy Chipotle cream sauce with tangy cilantro. They readily accommodated our ask that the queso blanco topping be just a light sprinkle. This evening they offered a fun hearty take on an Appalachian classic dish, sausage greens & beans, made with a noticeably spicy whole Andouille sausage over small white tender cannellini beans and creamy polenta and a tender flavorful layer of collard greens. We barely saved enough room to enjoy their bright sweet warm cherry pie with a light crust. This was a lovely dinner in an eclectic setting, suitable for a casual or elegant-feeling dinner, and tempting for a drop-in to see if there's seats available at their little bar. This restaurant on it's own is worth the trip to Harpers Ferry. read more

The place is too cute! None of my photos came out as they always had people in them so I won't post, but it's eclectic, charming, and so welcoming that we came here twice in our short visit to Harper's Ferry - once for cocktails and once for brunch! Their charcuterie board is a serious steal and enough for 5 women to share as an appetizer and actually be kind of full! We had some excellent cocktails too - the hummingbird being a favorite as well as the Lovey Dovey (a special, so be sure to check out the boards for off-menu items). This place surprised us in a good way! My wife and I had a great experience. We sat at the bar on a Thursday night and had dinner and drinks. The bartender was very friendly, and suggested two drink specials - a "Dear Jane" (Goodall) and an espresso martini. I had the Dear Jane which was absolutely delicious, and a fruity rum cocktail that I think was called "A Pirate's Life." For dinner, I had the shrimp, chorizo, and polenta, which was excellent. The tails were left on, an annoyance when in a dish and not an appetizer. My wife had the red pepper and pesto pasta with veg noodles substituted, and she loved it. The bar tender was kind enough to come to our table to verify our Old Fashion cocktail due to the opportunity for the customer to customize the drink to their taste. Overall, not great, especially the food and the extremely slow service. I was here with three others this past Saturday morning for a quick breakfast. We ordered a sandwich to share in pairs. Two of my friends got the Bolivar breakfast sandwich and they waited around 30 minutes for it. When they asked our server about it, turns out the sandwich has been sitting on a counter for awhile. MOTHMAN LATTE - 5 This is the pistachio & chocolate specialty latte. I asked for oat milk (no upcharge here!) and less syrup since I don't really like it overly sweet. It's a good combination, but nothing out of the ordinary. THE SALMON SANDWICH - 13 The sandwich was not an open-face sandwich like we had expected most smoked salmon ones to be. The two halves were on a baguette, almost like a sub. Each half contained a thin piece of smoked salmon -- for 13.00, I expected at least a thicker piece or another slice? The cream cheese layer was thicc and covered up all the other flavors. I would not recommend. There were a few measly slices of fruit that was mixed with the savory home fries. The home fries were well seasoned and tasty, probably my favorite part of this entree. Anyway, not worth it. They do have a small general store area where they sell a variety of different beers and drinks along with honey, jams, and coffee beans. I ended up buying a bag of beans from River Bottom Roasters that has been great for espresso shots. read more

My husband and I came to this beautiful, historic town and stumbled upon Snallygasters and what a treat! The drink selection was exciting and the food was absolutely incredible. We ended up dining here both nights because it was just that good! While visiting Harpers Ferry to do some hiking, we discovered this gem in neighboring Bolivar West Virginia, which was only a seven minute walk from our Vrbo spot. . From ambience to cuisine, it was definitely a relaxing and cozy. We decided on an early dinner after a long day of hiking and were greeted with a warm French atmosphere with great lighting and friendly staff. We were lucky enough to get a table off the bench which probably needs a little bit more cushioning since I was about 3 inches lower than my husband seated at the table, lol but it was certainly comfortable. They were all out of their French onion soup, which was a bummer but we did enjoy the bruschetta for appetizers. For entrées, we had the chipotle, shrimp linguine, and the pork and risotto. Both were pretty tasty, but the shrimp linguine was completely missing the chorizo. I thought my pork risotto was incredibly rich and comforting. It went very well with our our wine order of the Catena Malbec. We decided we would walk to the downtown area about a half mile to get ice cream that unfortunately did not go as well as our dinner. Walked in to find chic decor, historic interior, beautiful bar and dining tables. The menu is simple and elegant from sandwiches to charcuterie. I kept it simple with a garden salad, glass of water and small glass of Henri Champlain Rose wine. There was a good pick of beers on tap and in the cooler. There's a wine shop in the back. This salad was gorgeous! Everything looked freshly cut. The leafy green and other vegetables looked fresh from a farm.
