If you like pastries, this is a great place to go. They've got a ton of pastries that you can come in, grab and walk out or settle in and munch on. Unfortunately, my partner and I decided to come here for a sit-down breakfast. While the food was good - he ordered the Syrian omelette and I ordered their vegetarian stew - the service was overall... strange. After we ordered, we sat down and waited for about 30 minutes. Then someone from the cash register comes in and lets us know that it'll take five more minutes for my dish to come out. I say that's fine, and if my partner's dish is already ready, you can bring that out beforehand. So we waited.. and waited some more. For about 15 more minutes. I go up to the cash register, assuming that they haven't even started or forgot, and ask if we can get a refund. I'm told that the order has been placed and it's being worked on, but on top of the five minutes, it'd take at least 15 minutes to make everything else again (?). Um, ok. The food finally comes out and it's good and warm at least. I noticed how there's just ONE cook in the kitchen, but there's four people working the cash register or making coffee? Whoever the owners of Snapdragon are, don't cheap out - hire one more cook and your service will be a LOT better. read more

Wanted to spend a beautiful and chilly autumn day out amongst the delicate and vibrant foliage so we decided to hop the the ferry and head over to Vashon. As vegetarians we're always so delighted when we can find a place that is 100% vegan/vegetarian. We drove by and didn't see a parking spot in their lot so we parked on a side street right around the corner, very easy. We were greeted by a super friendly and welcoming fellow (thank you!) who informed us where the menus were, how seating worked, all the important stuff. It's more cafe than restaurant - you order upfront and find a spot to sit either outside (so, so charming...Alice In Wonderland vibes abound) The area outside had small fireplaces that were lit to keep the cozy (but not too cozy in these Covid times) diners toasty. You can also eat inside - the tables are meant for the bar so they are tiny and you'll really eat holding you plate in your hand or resting it on your lap - which wasn't a problem for us but if that could be a challenge outside might be better as they have more traditional sized dinning tables. I got a bit lost as my dreams were coming to reality when my eyes settled on the pastry case...scones, savoury snacks, brownies, danish....literally everything you could imagine was at our finger tips. We settled on the cinnamon roll to split and I just...I don't have an advanced enough vocabulary to describe how incredible it was. I wished I would have gotten many, many more to take home. I'd take the ferry each day to get one if I could. Okay - now that my check has cleared from the cinnamon roll association...on to the main brunch. We got the frittata and the quiche. My husband said it was one of the best quiches he has ever had. The toast was very hearty and just so, so good. Each dish had also a green sauce/chutney/salsa we weren't sure what it was but it was very delicious. To drink we got a chai with oat milk and a black coffee. Caught a late afternoon ferry over from Seattle and upon a friend's recommendation, headed to Snapdragon for a bite to eat. It did not disappoint! The kids had pastries.... a sticky bun and a carrot ginger muffin. Both were very tasty and obviously made with high quality ingredients. Husband and I were hungry for something savory. He got some hand cut fries and I got the mushroom stroganoff. The fries were perfectly fried, not too greasy, and were served with a nice aioli. The stroganoff was really exceptionally good. The gravy was complex and creamy. The lentil "meatballs" on top were moist and flavorful. And the portion was big enough that I'll be enjoying it again tomorrow for lunch. (If husband doesn't polish it off, late-night!) The thing that stands out the most however, were the absolute best Chai Lattes we've ever had. They were spicy and sweet, warm and rich. So good that we'd go back just for them. I can't imagine any nicer way than to pass a rainy PNW afternoon than sitting in that charming little cafe, with those cups of heaven. A sad review based on their pastries. I really wanted to like it here but after trying their pastries I won't be back. They use the same dough for the majority of their pastries. This dense bread like dough that looks almost multigrain. I got the croissant, lemon blueberry danish, and a cinnamon roll. All the same dough with different flavorings. The additional star is for the chocolate chip cookie. Visually burnt but decided to give it a go and it was crisp on edges but soft on the inside. read more

Visited Vashon Island for just the 2nd time over the weekend. Attended the Vashon Strawberry Festival, but also had in mind to visit Snapdragon. I had visited Vashon the first time to try Monkey Tree which was the previous incarnation of Snapdragon, only to see that it had closed. So I am glad to have gotten the chance to try it out in its newest state. Interesting note about Snapdragon is that it is owned by one of the brothers who runs World Pizza in the International District in Seattle. Like World Pizza, the food here is vegetarian. The offerings here include café fare, pizza (though individual size pizzas rather than the large pizzas at World Pizza) and baked goods. I would say this space has the most coffee shop/café feel of all of the businesses in the main business area of Vashon. There are no Starbucks on the island, but Snapdragon is a capable alternative with its wi-fi and casual feel. I had actually visited the Bite of Seattle prior to going to Vashon, so I didn't try out the main menu. Instead I went for the baked goods. I got three items including a cinnamon roll ($3), a croissant ($3) and a loaf of sunflower focaccia bread ($4). The cinnamon roll is a little different than the traditional version as it is made with fresh apples and currants. As a result, it has a slight tangy taste to it. If you don't like your cinnamon rolls to be excessively sweet, these would be worth a try. The croissant was good once I put it in the oven for a few minutes. Quite impressive given the small locale. Though note that croissants are available only on the weekends, so a trip to Bakery Nouveau for islanders would be needed on weekdays if you are hankering for one. Though the pastries were good, I liked the focaccia the most of the three items. It is a rustic loaf with an interesting mix of ingredients including sunflower seeds and olives. The focaccia was the only bread available, so I am guessing that they don't make many bread loaves daily. Get them if you can. There are not very many dining options on Vashon. As a result, Snapdragon is a spot that seems to stand out. If you are looking for a bakery/café spot to eat on the island, this would be it. read more

Made a day trip to Vashon for some hiking and some outside time during Covid. After the hike we made a couple stops in town. This was one of them. The place was pretty busy, I imagine it draws a lot of visitors from other places, but it also seems to draw a lot of locals as well. When I was in there the owner I believe was walking around greeting people and seemed to know the two customers in front of me by name. I think thats a good sign for sure. Plus everything we got was really good. I loved the snacks we grabbed. I would highly recommend this place for sure and look forward to visiting next time around. read more

This place is off the hook, absolutely incredible. We went for breakfast two separate mornings, once ordering their epic breakfast burrito and once ordering their croissant egg sandwich. Both had wonderful, unique flavors that were unexpected and absolutely DELIGHTFUL. The staff are angels and the absolute nicest; they play top notch Gypsy Kings playlists (5* right there). You'd think the buck would stop short with the pastries, and wow how wrong we were! We went all in, taking a chance and ordering essentially the whole case. We got the blueberry muffin, the blackberry cinnamon roll, the hazelnut sticky bun, the almond marzipan-filled croissant and their savory cheesy pesto bread. We loved swinging by Snapdragon on Vashon Island during our weekend getaway! The place has a great decor and an even more impressive selection of fresh bakery items. One of our servers (Justin) was even kind enough to offer some fresh bread on the house in honor of our wedding celebration. Their dishes were equally mouth watering. I got their Herbed scramble with breakfast potatoes that had a delicious homemade tomato sauce on it. Love this little Vashon gem! My husband and I are visiting from Seattle on a long weekend and stumbled upon this little coffee shop, which boasts ridiculously delicious pastry goods, hearty soups, vegetarian fare and a bar! The staff was friendly and warm and the blueberry cinnamon roll was delightful. We sipped our Cafe Umbria coffee in the charming 21+ bar section, accompanied by three local 60-something year old men and an adorable dog named Jazz. This place is a little hidden as it's right by the Chevron gas station and a little short jaunt from the heart of the 'downtown' but it is well-worth it. I was going to give 'em four stars instead of 5 because the service is kind of too laid back stoner. The woman at the counter couldn't answer simple questions. The separate coffee order gal walked away for 5 minutes and when a friend asked me why I hadn't joined their table, I said rather calmly, "I'm waiting for my coffee. I gave my order, but she's been gone for 5 minutes." I didn't even sound crabby about it. But that young woman was on her way back already, and she actually yelled at me like I'd insulted her horridly. And then there was the guy who brings food to the table -- various things at long intervals so it's hard to eat together. But I don't give a good morning's sh-t about that stuff. I care if the food is good and when it's better than good that's worth 5 stars. We all ordered different things and sampled from one another's plates. Every damn thing was super-duper. It was also large portions. Now I'm an over eater and fat enough to prove it, but I couldn't possibly eat all that! So I imagine a lot of food gets thrown away, though not by me. We had to fetch our own take-home containers an hour later, but did have plenty of leftovers. If I lived on Vashon I'd go here regularly but would want to share a plate, definitely enough for two. Reminds me a lot of Long Ago when former hippies cum vegetarian entrepreneurs were opening little cafes left and right and it was such a great time to be a vegetarian with lots of places to eat. Most of those cafes only lasted a couple years each, but a couple actually still exist decades later. To me Snapdragon felt like a throwback, right down to the crabby servers. If you're the sort who feels like life has come to an end because someone didn't hop-to-it and assist you with perfection so that you want to avenge yourself on Yelp, don't go. Our friends who live on Vashon brought us into Snapdragon on our last day on the island. Those bastards were holding out. I would have been bellied up at that little counter every morning had I known the delicious treasures I could find there. First things first- I am not just a fan of chocolate croissants, I would consider myself a fanatic. I do not just love them, I adore them. I enjoy trying them in all different places and spaces and would eat them in a house, with a mouse and in a box with a fox. Snapdragon knows how to do a chocolate croissant right. Perfectly baked and with just enough flaky goodness. The chocolate to croissant ratio was magically applied and the whole thing took me to my own private happy place where only my vanilla latte could pull me away, however briefly. Next up? The three cheese roll. With cream cheese. Baked to perfection and encrusted with cheese. The sunflower seeds baked into the dough added a nice bit of texture to the thick doughy inside. My advice is to sit at one of the tables and request it warmed in the oven before devouring it. MMMM. My latte was made perfectly. I grew up in Marin County California in the 60's and 70's. This was the height of hippy, new age, crunchy granola culture. As a result I have a deepseated fear of vegetarian restaurants. In my mind it's all wheat germ, and carrot juice. But after eating several delicious baked goods from them at the Vashon Farmers Market I was curious. It still took me 5 months after moving here to finally come in. But I'm glad I finally did. The initial setup is confusing. You order at the counter and then go sit. This is fine in theory, but it only takes a couple of fussy off-islanders to throw the whole thing off. I've been trapped in line a couple of times waiting for some terminally self-centered person finally decide what to eat. That aside, the coffee is good and the baked goods are probably the best on the island. They make a cheese thingy(it's kind of like a cinammon roll but with savory cheese). They have a once a month curry dinner that I can't wait to try. read more
