My favorite Mexican food in Ventura. The Jack sauce is INSANE. They have healthy options which is always a good choice because my Doctor said I'm morbidly obese (speak for yourself !) I also love the cool gourmet soda options as well as the pickled jalapeños and carrots. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever truly be happy. And then I remember I can order a crispy shell chicken taco and drown it in the verde salsa while watching an old surf movie being drowned out by the staff blasting a Red Hot Chili Peppers Spotify playlist at full volume while I shovel food into my face and they (the staff) reluctantly clean up after all the extremely messy patrons. Nobody there has ever snapped at me, but this place still lives up to its name and reputation. I wish the one on Main Street had never closed down. Late stage capitalism isn't a real thing, but losing one of your favorite restaurants makes you think it is and need a made up buzz word to blame it on. This place is AWFUL. I ordered to go, got a chile verde burrito and junior taquitos. Pics online reflected the taquitos came with sour cream and guacamole but the box only had mini taquitos in a huge box with nothing else! The burrito was even worse! Ice cold, cheese not even melted with a total of 5 small chunks of pork! We tore it sideways and laughed bc it was truly so unbelievable. The pork was so salty and flavorless! What a complete joke. After going there regularly for more than 8 years, I've never been served by the same person twice. They can't seem to keep their help. Their prices keep getting more expensive and their food quality has gone to crap. They're not friendly, they don't seem to appreciate their regular customers. 8 years theyve been giving me jalapenos, you have to ask for jalapenos. They keep the yellow pepers, sauces and fruit salsa all free, now after 8 years of giving me jalapenos they want to gaudge me with a up charge. I had some errands to run in Ventura and my "reward" was to grab a crispy potato taco at Snapper Jacks! Best reward I've had in a long time!!! The service was amazing and fast! They give you a handful of tortilla chips and that taco was HUGE!!! The salsa bar is awesome and they have a great selection; fresh cilantro, lemons, limes, pickled carrot, jalapeño and onions, and salsas for every taste Their special taco sauce is so yummy it will make you go back for more! Nachos are great, tacos are even better. I eat out at mecican restaurants all the time and there is always some meat that is not fully cooked. Not here. Unfortunately Snapper Jacks is now using soy bean oil for frying which has a distinctive and rancid taste (at least to me). This means I can no longer enjoy their chips, crispy tacos or taquitos. Service remains great and their non-fried food is still good., hence the 3 stars. read more

Snapper Jack's (Ventura) took an utterly sad nose dive!!! First off, the entire reason many of us go to SJT: the Seafood Tacos and Burritos the are "award winning.". These days; far from it. After discovering they took another price increase since our last trip there in 2024. We realize how Sad and kinda expected it was to see in this economy to one of your favorite go-to's when vacation, traveling or just driving thru Ventura..They have a handful of restaurants (Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park included) and we chose Ventura, what I believe to still be the flagship location. I take it they're also not resilient to Multi-location pricing though, huh Jordano's? Anyway, the real problem wasn't the price, hence the 1-star review... I would have given them zero stars after this entire experience ended. The inconsistency between 2 identical Cancun Burritos; one overflowing with seafood lacking seasoning and dripping with grease... The other: 90% Spanish rice with barely any shrimp or crab to be found and clearly over-compensating with way, way too much avocado... CHUNKS of Avocado which my date literally pulled out one thru eight chunks, individually. Neither of us are personally fans of abundant fat, namely using avocado as the center-piece of n "Award Winning Seafood" Burrito.; specifically the Cadillac on their entire menu offering. Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that barely any of their complimentary tortilla chips accompanied the duo of pricey seafood treats as well,; on either one of our burrito tray mind you. Sad, but true. This location has fallen off my go-to list. Can I get my Tip back?!!! Then, the finisher... The utter straw that broke the camel's back in this experience... My date went to wash her hands, as the grease from her burrito still gleamed on her fingers after multiple napkin wipes.... She was greeted by a negligent hot water handle in the right-most offering of barely clean restrooms. Within seconds of turning on the water, a jettison of rusty, hot water began spraying like a firehouse into the ceiling, and on to my date. Rust literally spayed her from head-to-toe!! (I will say, If this was a malicious act or some hi-jinx from the 3+1 teenie bopper girls and their latch-key boy toy that had just left... ) I think the proof is in the pudding at this point: Teenage kids + a round robin of cooks (hired and fired) = One horrible experience that just cost them 2 loyal customers. Word of mouth makes and breaks restaurants these days. I would be remiss if I didn't say how sad... No, devastatingly sad it truly makes me to have to type this kind of review, as I first enjoyed one of my first fish tacos from Snapper Jack's back in 2013 when completing my Masters at a now defunct College Institute. This experience really erased that first, amazing experience with a literal, utterly bad taste in my mouth. Apparently, a LOT can happen in 12 years... Thanks. But NO thanks, SJT. It's been.... Real. This is my go to place for Potato Tacos. I've tried them at a few other places but none are even remotely as good as they are here. There are a lot of other things on the menu. Maybe those other things are good, i don't know. All I get here is Jack's Combo with either one or two Potato Tacos. Usually I get the Mini Combo, one taco. The Combo comes with Rice and Beans and a handful of tortilla chips. You can choose between whole or refried beans. You can also choose between corn or flour tortillas. In my opinion, the best configuration is corn tortillas (fried Crispy) and refried beans. The Potato Tacos here are just about perfect. It's like eating a loaded baked potato in taco form. The creamy sauce they put on those tacos is unlike any taco sauce I've ever had. And if you want more you can load up at the Salsa Bar. And Snapper Jack's has a bomb ass Salsa Bar. They've got so many Salsas it's ridiculous. Like probably about ten or fifteen. I don't know really. I couldn't be bothered counting salsas, I had a potato taco to eat. Sometimes I take my tacos to go, but I much prefer eating inside the restaurant because they have really great Surfing videos playing all the time. There are a few other TVs tuned to whatever sports programming is happening at the moment, but the TV over the counter where you pick up your food is almost always running Surfing vids. The only negative aspect of eating inside is that the chairs here Suck. They Suck so egregiously, They Suck with a capital S. I hate those cheap ass metal chairs. I'd probably eat here way more often if they had more comfortable chairs. My butt don't want no cheap ass metal chairs. I love everything else about the inside of the restaurant, particularly all the Surfing related posters and ephemera. But those chairs, ugh! And here's another reason why I love Snapper Jack's: the people working there are clearly well trained, efficient and actually seem pretty happy doing what they're doing. That's rare. I was shocked to see a medium (unsweetened) black iced tea costs $3.25. I guess that's for the paper cup, lid and straw. Because ice tea itself is not that expensive. But it's alright. The chicken taco was yummy. I've been here before, it's quite a popular little place. I never rated it because it was hit and miss for me, and I wanted to eat here more to give a fair rating. No complaints about my taco it was good. Tea was good. Salsas were alright. I tried several. They were just okay. It was clean inside. Food was decent, but it wasn't something I'd crave, just convenient. Close by where I was shopping. I'm giving 4 stars because I thought the food tasted fresh. I took off one star because the iced tea was expensive, and the salsa was just okay. At no point did I think "Omg this is delicious!" But neither did I think it was bad. This place is too big to gatekeep. Been eating here for 25 years. I bring out of towners here to have surf shack tacos. These aren't street tacos. These are elite. There's always surf videos on the screen and the ambience so perfectly encapsulates Ventura. Lots of good things on this menu but the crispy tacos are a definite highlight. I think back to 19 year old me, ordering their steak quesadillas or surf & turf burrito. They were good, but I was young and dumb and hadn't had the culinary awakening that is their crunchy taco. My family likes the chicken, I like the steak, but we can all agree in unison that these people know how to cook their shrimp to perfection. Oh yeah their fish is great too, never ever over cooked. My friends who have moved away ask if we can come here when they're in town visiting. Their salsa bar is condiment heaven for those who are sauce aficionados. I've tried to recreate their secret shack sauce at home, it never comes close. My sister just gave birth yesterday, and I'm headed here to pick up tacos for her so she can have her first indulgent meal post-birth. The downtown location just recently closed, but that's ok, bc this spot is the OG spot, their staff knows what they're doing and are always kind and have never once in 25 years messed up my order. I ordered some stuff for pick up. The place is clean and the process was efficient and smooth. Grilled fish taco: The fish was extremely bland. All you could taste was the chewy tortilla, crunchy cabbage, and the tangy sauce. The small portion of fish vs. the large tortilla also contributed to the lack of flavor. It was disappointing and reminded me of Rubio's fish taco. Breakfast burrito: Overall, it was good. This was the 1st time I have had beans in a breakfast burrito. It made the burrito eat "heavier" than a breakfast burrito normally is, however it did provide some another bite to the burrito. I wish there was a tad more bacon, and it surprisingly didn't come out salty, which is usually where a breakfast burrito goes wrong. Overall, I would have normally given 2/3 stars, however the service alone deserved the 4 stars. The employees were all extremely friendly and pleasant. Apparently, fish tacos are the go-to meal for Californians...so I had to blend in and try things out. I ordered the Jack's Combo, which comes with two tacos, Spanish rice and beans. I opted for the Potato and Fish tacos on Crispy Flour Tortillas, with an additional Shrimp taco on the side. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the crispy tortillas, but only because I prefer soft tacos. Otherwise, the fish and shrimp tacos were really refreshing and light, but that also means it didn't have much flavor. As for the Potato Taco, I had to try it out, as it piqued my curiosity. Like others have stated, this tasted more like a mashed hot potato, but in my opinion, not much flavor (again). There is a salsa bar with a variety of salsas, but the salsas also lacked a punch... I feel compelled to share that I had the worst food poisoning of my life from this place last night. I had one of their shrimp tacos and half of a bean, rice, and cheese burrito. I am concerned they don't know how to properly prepare their shrimp and fish. I am 26 weeks pregnant so that may be a contributing factor but dear lord last night was brutal. I looked like the girl from Exorcist, non stop from midnight until 6 AM. However, my husband had the steak enchiladas and had no issues. It is just not up to the standards of a fish burrito you would find in one of Ventura Country's Mexican restaurants. There are some restaurants especially in Oxnard that specialize in seafood and their fish burritos are heads and shoulders above the burrito I got at Snapper Jacks. The tortilla was not warm enough so it seemed like it was just thrown on top of a bunch of ingredients that didn't really go together. They could have at least tried to toast it. I hoped that the salsa would salvage it but there is no salvaging a cold tortilla. There was not much fish and it was dry, and not well seasoned. No attention to details here. We stopped by here after dropping our completed Primary ballots off at the County courthouse. It was great weather, so we ate outside (plus we do that anyway cuz we're still covid cautious). I ordered their shrimp with rice and sauteed veggies, with avocado and tomato slices. It's listed under their healthy menu options, and my question is, how can something so delicious be THAT healthy? I've been going to this place for years and it never disappoints. Recently made a visit after a few years and ordered the Cancun Burrito....its the same as I remember. It was so delicious, the shrimp and real crab that they put inside is an amazing combo. The shack sauce is a must on the side as well as in the burrito. Their salsa bar is awesome, so many options.
