We went to Sony's for the first time last night and were impressed. Everything was excellent. The she crab soup and chopped salad are excellent starting choices. We especially loved the soup. All three of us enjoyed our entrees. My wife had the fried chicken. My son, the short rib, and I was able to do half shrimp and grits/ half crab cakes. Our server, David, was awesome. He was vey witty and was knowledgeable about the menu. He was the reason I split my entree. All in all, a great experience. We will be back. read more

The best of the best in Greenville. Everything is always spot on. Tried one of their new apps last night, pork belly, blue cheese sauce, balsamic and green onions on kettle chips OUTSTANDING. She crab soup is awesome very intense sherry flavor and there is a good amount of crab in it. My husband and I both got the tyger River salad with chicken, mine grilled and his fried and they were both delicious. Delicious! It was our first time visiting and the staff was most welcoming, accommodating and knowledgeable. The food was incredibly fresh and the efficient kitchen timed our food well. My husband & shared the fried green tomatoes - on a bed of broccolini with a special sauce - absolutely amazing! We also shared the shaved asparagus salad - another surprise with the crisped proscuitto! I had the seasonal vegetarian bowl with amazing falafel topped with an avocado cream YUMM! I really wanted to love this place, based on some of the prior reviews. In truth it was just OK, and not nearly as good as other local places for southern style cuisine. I started off with the She Crab Soup. It was thick and sort of flavorless, with just of few hints of thin crab meat. My wife got the Fried Green Tomatoes. She in a true aficionado of this southern delicacy, and has tried samples from over a least 100 different places over the years. She said at best these were at best OK, and would not order them again. For my entree I got the mussels mariniere appetizer with an add on crab cake, as none of the entrees really enticed me. The sauce was thick and without balance and flavor. It needed more acid and spice at the very least to cut through all that cream and fat, as mussels are really a blank canvas. The crab cake add on, was cold, obviously reheated and not freshly prepared, and did not have jumbo lump crab, but rather small crab bits. Definite hard pass in the future. My wife got the fried chicken which was quite good. Her macaroni was certainly nonstandard and inedible. Service was fine, and ambiance is nice. read more

I had been recommended this place so many times by locals and I never took the opportunity. I finally did and I 100% will go back. The desserts coming out of the back were beautiful, we didn't have room but I can't wait to try them, lol. I loved the crab cakes, they really are less filling than most places down here (I am from the land of the maryland crab cakes which none can beat) This was a great place to take guests too! These were so amazing and the hot honey really set them over the top. I had the Seared Striped Bass for my meal. My husband had fried chicken, Mac n cheese, and haricot vert. All our food was way too salty! My eggs were rubbery and flash-fried so they were crispy on the bottom. Everyone knows the eggs are supposed to be cooked slowly on low. The English muffin was burnt. Black. They rave about their grits. They need an NC mountains grits lesson. I had dinner at Soby's with a group of 13 in their wine cellar, which was an experience in and of itself! I ordered a Best Day Ever nonalcoholic drink since I was designated driver for some of our group from the Asheville area. It was light and refreshing. I had the seared halibut and added a crab cake after our server talked them up as she went over menu features and specials. I also had an order of the broccolini. The halibut was served with capers, red peppers, and asparagus tips among other goodies. The only weak link in the meal was the broccolini. They were barely warm even though they were served in a small cast iron skillet. The leftovers I took home and heated up in the oven were much better the next day when they were hot and crispier. The crab cake was my favorite part of the meal and I'd order it and the halibut again in a heartbeat! Service was excellent also. read more

The marinated beets & arugula salad was so good that even my husband loved the sample I shared with him. (He never liked beets before, so kudos to Soby's.) The serving of chicken breast was very tender, juicy, tasty but not salty- just right. I would definitely order this again. The salad doesn't come with any meat. I requested grilled chicken breast. His pear, pecan, goat cheese salad with grilled salmon was a generous size, juicy & seasoned just right, not slathered with butter or salt. His salad was delicious as well. The salad doesn't come with a protein. He requested grilled salmon. The peach cheesecake was yummy, sweet but not too sweet. Nice presentation as well. Late spring weather was perfect on the large outside patio with a view of busy Main Street. Had several wines by the glass that were excellent. I have always heard good things about Soby's and came to visit with high expectations but was let down. On arrival, I sat at the bar for a few until the rest of the party arrived and the bartenders were very friendly and helpful with the menu. The restaurant is huge with lots of space for large party reservations but still intimate for a small night out in downtown Greenville. However, the food was just average to me and the menu options were not anything special for southern cuisine. We started with a complimentary basket of fresh cheddar biscuits, they came out hot but they were so dry...so dry that I had to ask for a side of butter to coat them in. Next, we tried the calamari, which was just OK, it was very bland, and the dipping sauce wasn't the greatest. For entrees, we tried various things on the menu as a table, I had the shrimp and grits and they were pretty tasty with a little spicy kick. They give you plenty of large shrimp and the grits were cooked very well, I am just not a huge fan of tomato based gravy. We were a large party celebrating graduation and our server was GREAT! She was able to take everyone's order, bring out everything correctly, and was able to split our checks at the end which is always a huge plus for large parties. I wouldn't be opposed to trying them again but I would probably try the short ribs or fried shrimp next time. read more

My first time at Soby's and it did not disappoint. Met up with my old classmate/friend/peloton buddy (add me if you ride). I ordered the pecan sticky bun for us to share. It was so good. I literally could've added a side of bacon and be done. But, I ordered the chicken biscuit w/sausage gravy. My friend ordered the same with gravy on the side. Those biscuits were HUGE! They were super light and fluffy, so that was surprising. The gravy was a little thick. If I were to order again, I'd have put on the side as well. I ordered the St. Mimosa, which is a mimosa with a splash of St. Germain. So good. I love St. Germain, so I was happy to see it on the menu. We were staying downtown and walking to another restaurant when we happened upon Soby's. We sat at the bar and Rachel the bar tender served us. I ordered fried chicken with truffle Mac n cheese and Mr. O ordered she crab soup. His soup was perfect, but Rachel overheard me say that my chicken was just a little dry so she flew into action and ordered me another dish of the same. Did I mention that our orders came in record time? Also, my cocktail was the Lady Diana. If you love sweet Southern drinks, this one is perfection. One of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time, high ratings in every level. Service, food, interior, exterior, ambiance. Soby's is a sweet find in downtown Greenville. Perfect quaint patio dining area for warm days and perfect brunch spot. Inside also great warmth, just really a inviting place. Super friendly staff even if not your server. We came here by accident, as our original dinner reservations got cancelled by the other restaurant for some freak reason! I'm so glad we got to try it too. For a busy place they managed to keep tables pretty distanced and staff still wore masks, even in pretty open South Carolina! Our server was awesome, explanation on every question we asked and very knowledgeable. We started with the drinks! The book of wines was pretty extensive, they have an amazing variety, pretty impressive. I went with a cocktail, the Ruby rock a fella, gin, raspberry infused Campari and Lillet rosé, great pretty drink, the ice cubes with raspberries was a nice touch, but a great easy, not sweet drink. Everyone else got wine on the table and all were impressed. Their mini cheese biscuits were so good and crumbly. Warm and crispy on the outside. You can sit there and eat the whole basket! So dinner, since we already did apps somewhere else we went straight to entrees. My friend and I got the pan roasted Corvina, nice for, white fish, but still flaky. It came on crawfish gumbo on the menu, but we switched it to mashed potatoes. Also had steamed rice and a wonderful creamy herb sauce. The fish was incredible, loved this dish, the potatoes were on point, creamy , a little garlicky, a little lumpy but that's how i like them. Oh it had a bonus scallop on the plate too, not sure why, but I love scallops, they also plated it for us so we didn't have to split it, which I always love. Amazing fresh, hearty dish. Our friend also got the same dish with the gumbo and said the gumbo was nice , with slight spiciness but loved how all the flavors of the sauce, gumbo and fish came together. Corvina is a rare find so I would definitely try it anywhere you find it, also on the table was the Beef tenderloin wrapped in bacon, this dish smelt amazing. Looked delicious. With mashed potatoes, broccolini, and a habanero cream sauce, also came with scallops! Not sure why, but we'll take it! She loved this dish, the tenderloin was cooked to perfection , and the bacon infused its flavor into the beef, the broccoli I was nice and tender. Another winner. Dessert! The peach crisp, with whiskey caramel, vanilla bean ice cream, and sliced strawberries, nice warm, dish of goodness, like a cobbler, just reminded me of a homemade dessert, really good and the peaches were nicely cooked not mushy. The black magic chocolate cake! Wow, this was stunning, milk chocolate buttercream, mint chocolate chip ice cream, with strawberries, chocolate drizzle, this was truly decadent. Rich, smooth, creamy, intense chocolate, the ice cream was amazing too. Loved the hit of mint after its almost gone, never seen such a high tower cake before, great choice for Chocolate lovers! Great desserts. A cool thing at Soby's, they have a wine cellar where they have a table that seats 8 and you can actually dine down there if available. At no extra charge. Our server said we could go look at it as the party dining there had just left, she escorted us down, and showed us around. One awesome cellar ! Tons of wines, very old time feel, not a modern type cellar. The most expensive bottle in there was $14,000! The table down there was awesome, would definitely try and get down there next time if available. Neat touch that you can actually go visit the cellar I thought. Restaurant week review incoming! $35 for a three course meal is definitely one of the better deals in Greenville, and a great deal for the elevated cuisine and service that Soby's offers! We had a reservation for 8:30, but it was close to 9 before we were seated. It's inevitable that such a popular local spot would be busy on the first Friday night of restaurant week, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that running 30 minutes late on seating impacted our experience. Our server was on it--she was very knowledgeable about the wine list and made an excellent recommendation for me, also helping us decide which dessert to order. My friend and I both ordered the she crab soup, the braised lamb shank, and the chocolate chess pie (great minds think alike, as they say). The she crab soup was very, very heavy on the seasoning, to the point that it overshadowed any other flavors and was a bit difficult to get down. I was glad we had some biscuits left to eat with the soup, which helped mellow it out a bit. The braised lamb shank, however, was amazing! The meat was tender, flavorful, and juicy, and excellently paired with goat cheese grits and pickled baby carrots. I love lamb, so when I saw this on Soby's restaurant week menu I knew I had to try it. The chocolate chess pie was the perfect cherry on top of our meal--the amaretto whipping cream balanced the richness of the chocolate, and the crust added a delightful texture to each bite. As one of Greenville's local gems, I would definitely recommend dining at Soby's--restaurant week or not. I'll be back for more of the excellent food and service! read more
