We found this place while researching restaurants to go to while visiting Greenville. It came highly recommended on yelp and it just sounded like a classic southern spot. We couldn't be more impressed with this establishment. Everyone was extremely friendly, and the owner came by and introduced himself to all the tables and checked in with us. We started off with a crabcake and bang bang shrimp to share and the crabcake was absolutely delicious. Then we had our salads which were a huge portion for a side salad and were also fantastic. . For meals, we did the fried stuffed chicken and it was so amazing along with the mac & cheese brussels sprouts. The marinated beef tips were also delicious. It's such a cute and cozy restaurant inside and out on the patio. A place where you can come for dinner or you can also sit at the bar! we wish we were local so that we could go back again, but it just means we have to book another trip to Greenville! read more

We had an incredible dinner at Sassafras, and it deserves all the praise. We started with a trio of appetizers -- the blue crab nachos, the fried green tomatoes (a first for my coworker visiting from Wisconsin), and the spinach dip special. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and a perfect introduction to Southern comfort with a twist. For dinner, my coworker ordered the seafood trio with double blackened scallops and fried catfish, paired with asparagus and risotto. Everything was cooked beautifully and full of bold flavor. I had the mango salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus, and it was outstanding -- tender, bright, and perfectly balanced. A huge shoutout to our waitress, Skye, who was incredibly patient as we explored the menu. She walked us through each appetizer and entrée, offered thoughtful recommendations, and helped my Wisconsin coworker dive into Southern cuisine with confidence. I have eaten in Sassafras restaurant, probably 10+ times since moving here 3 1/2 years ago. We have never been disappointed by the ambience the service or the way the restaurant is run. And we've never been disappointed by the food until last night. My husband had Caesar salad, which was fine. We had the tuna appetizer which was good. He ordered the grilled scallop dish and it looked like they were practically no scallops on the plate. I had the special fish with the creole sauce. It was quite dry. I must say, though the Keylime pie is excellent. I'm not saying that we won't go back ever again, but I must say this was the most disappointing food. I've had at Sassafras in 3 1/2 years however the service by our waitress melon was perfect. I wasn't intending to write this, however, I feel a need to do that. read more

Ordered takeout from here for a group of like 10 people and it was super great! I got the grilled salmon with crab, grits, and asparagus. It was cold which is to be expected because it was takeout, but after reheating it was suppppper yummy so i can only imagine what is would be like fresh. The salmon was cooked perfectly and nothing was too buttery/oily. I LOVED the grits and they gave a huge portion. I'm from the northeast so i've never had grits, and i loved these! I was tagging along on my husband's business trip and looking for a place for dinner on my own. I popped in for the crab cakes and boy did they deliver! Sometimes a crab cake entree leaves you hungry, but this one was a full meal. The plate came with green beans, fries and a little hush puppy, and a creole tartar. The restaurant is a cute little place right in the middle of the downtown area. It had a decent atmosphere, but unfortunately we weren't blown away by the food. My friend had the fish and the star of the whole dish was one of her sides. I had one of their salads with thinly sliced tuna. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great for the prices they charge. My advice would be to think outside the box as most of the other southern restaurants in town had almost this exact menu. read more

The chicken was perfectly cooked, deliciously crispy, and so flavorful. But let me tell you about the mac and cheese--it was everything! The crunchy edges were just a total YES! The Brussels sprouts were roasted to perfection, adding the perfect savory touch. Our daughter ordered the Shrimp and Grits, which is her go-to dish whenever it's on the menu. She loved it. Sat at the end of the bar in front of a tv. I started out with a Manhattan to drink. Then I decided to try a bowl of their she crab soup. Although it hasn't arrived yet! Upon request, it's on the way! I hope they remember a spoon. She crab soup was tasty although I would have preferred more crab. For a main course I ordered the Sassafras fried chicken with spinach and mash potatoes and I add 3 blackened scallops. Some how my photo of my entree didn't take and by the time I realized it I was in the clean plate club. I ate that meal up quick! The portion was huge. The chicken was crispy and tender, stuffed and boneless. The spinach was tasty and the gravy added a sweeter taste to each bite. The scallops were tender and went well with the spinach. This was literally more food than I ate combined in the last week . It felt so good to consume such a tasty comfort meal. Martin, the owner, stopped by to check on me and my meal which I appreciated. I love a place the does the little things right and demonstrates their pride inn the food they serve: Sassafras had that and then some! Wow what an amazing experience! I came to South Carolina for a work event and I started to google the best places to eat in Greenville, Sassafras came up. As I read the reviews I thought I should call ahead to see how long the wait was without a reservation, the hostess advised 1.5 hours but that the bar was open sitting. I headed over hoping to get a seat at the bar, unfortunately for me the bar was full, but the hostess was able to seat me in the dining room within 5 minutes of being there. As soon as I was seated my waitress approached and asked for my drink order. She was on top of my ice tea refills throughout the meal. She gave a great recommendation of the blacked salmon, it was on top grits with asparagus. The food was flavorful, I have never had grits outside of breakfast and it was a nice side. The key lime pie had a good tang and was very tasty. Overall the meal and service was a 5. At the end the night a couple I didn't have a chance to thank or even see because they were sitting behind paid for my dinner. I have never had that happen and it was an awesome surprise. Came here with co-workers for dinner on a recent business trip. We arrived shortly after opening and were seated immediately despite not having a reservation. I chose the Crab Cakes and substituted the creamy Parmesan risotto instead of the French Fries. The crab cakes were a perfect balance of the crab and breading and seasoned well. The risotto was incredibly creamy and cheesy. The green beans were nice and crisp with just the right amount of salt. For my drink I went with the Sassatini - Malibu rum with melon liqueur, homemade sour mix and a splash of OJ and pineapple. It was excellent and would highly recommend for those that like more of a sweet tasting drink. I will be buying the ingredients to try and replicate at home for myself. The restaurant was quiet enough to allow for easy conversation but loud enough to not hear and follow nearby tables conversation. This is an excellent option for both a business dinner, date night or even a special occasion without being stuffy. read more

I was debating on what to order when I saw it was what the guy next to me had ordered. It is a large portion and was cooked and seasoned to perfection, with a lightly crispy coating. The apple butter on top added nicely to the overall flavor profile of this dish. It came with creamy mashed potatoes and fresh tasting green beans. The side salads were fresh and tasted great. The mains were very tasty, and my wife's beef dish (Boeuf en Croûte) was something special.
