My boyfriend and I decided to try Sobys because everyone raves about it. We went for dinner on a Tuesday and were able to be seated right away. We ordered 2 glasses of the wine special of that night, a Pinot noir from Oregon. As appetizers we ordered a tomato soup and vegetable fries. The tomato soup was extremely bland but the vegetable fries were good. The "fries" were served with goat feta and pepper jam and the combination of the 3 was delicious. For my entree I ordered the crab cakes and my boyfriend ordered the duck. My crab cakes were good (8/10) but soo over priced. It was two little crab cakes served with corn, green beans, and mashed potatoes and cost $26. My boyfriend enjoyed his duck and said the meat was good but the skin wasn't as crispy as he liked and the sauce was a bit too sweet - he might be used to the Bavarian style duck though. Overall I thought the experience was ok. The meal ended up being over a hundred dollars so I think the food should be a bit better. We really enjoyed our wine and the service was fantastic, so there's that. The location is also really nice although there's not a lot of parking (expected when you're downtown). read more

Food poisoned and disappointed..... 12/15/15 Our order: Apps: Fried Green tomatoes and Pimento Cheese Main Entree: Split the pork tenderloin cooked to the servers recommendation. Dessert: Banana cream pie Service: Soup was awesome! Our drinks came out quickly, he checked on us frequently and brought the food out quickly. The BAD!!! From what I could tell from the smell of my vomit and explosive diarrhea, the pork was not good. We ate dinner about 6 (i had 3/4 of a pork medallion!!!!), got home about 7 and went to bed about 8. I was woken up at 9pm with a severe stomach pain and a feeling of a brick in my stomach. I then tossed and turned for 30 minutes followed by about 3 hours of praying to the porcelain gods! I then got 30 minutes of sleep followed by multiple trips to the toilet for explosive diarrhea. This lasted on and off for 4 hours. Halfway through this round I had to call of work costing me a full days worth of pay. Now, how do I know it was the pork.... hahaha let me tell you. Both my emesis and the liquid evacuation out the backside I had smelled EXACTLY LIKE THAT PORK I HAD!!!! The mashed potatoes tasted like instant potatoes, I was reassured by Soup they were not. The broccoli thing that was on the plate seemed more like a garnish, then something to be consumed, because it was barely steamed. To add insult to injury I paid 77$ for this experience! and to describe this as a reaction i had to food would be incorrect. Remember I split this entree!!!! The other half of the order also had issues. Needless to say I fed the trash can at 2 am of the left overs. The only good with the food was the fried green tomatoes. The she crab soup is the best I have ever had by a long shot.. It is really rich and comes with a pretty healthy portion would definitely recommend splitting it. The garlic cheese biscuits that come out before your meal are heaven in a ball.. No need for any butter on these bad boys. I have been here 3 times now and haven't bothered trying anything else but the deconstructed chicken pot pie, the fried chicken that comes with it is cooked to perfection and makes my mouth water just thinking about it! Had dinner last night with my husband. I was really looking forward to it too....we haven't been out in a while. Just too busy with work. I really don't think my expectations were too, too high but it was just NOT good. I had the crab cakes which were salty and the sauce was nothing more than mayo. Boring. The corn tasted like the chef stirred in some canned pork and beans. The green beans were almost raw with nothing to them. No butter, garlic, salt, pepper....NADA. Boring. Mashed potatoes left nothing to write about either. Just Boring. The bill was over $100.00. One glass of wine each. Probably won't go back. We went to early dinner before a concert and had a great experience. We sat at the bar and had drinks before our meal was ready. I had a their bourbon sweet tea, which was not too sweet and refreshing. One we were seated, we ordered two appetizers - the cheese board and the fried green tomatoes. The cheese board was great! All of the items were delicious but my favorite one was a goat milk mousse. I could have had that for dessert and been happy. I was skeptical of the fried green tomatoes, since Charleston serves up some pretty amazing ones, but these were on par! The pimento cheese sauce on them could go on everything. I ordered a kale and benne salad and the sweet dressing with the savory seeds was soooo good. For my entree, I ordered the roasted duck breast which came over a farro and butternut squash ragout with braised red cabbage and apple cider gastrique. The duck was fantastic. The braised red cabbage was sweet from the apple cider and complemented the duck very well. However, the butternut squash in the ragout was too firm for my liking and the squash/farro didn't taste like much of anything without mixing it with the cabbage. I also tried a bite of my friend's pumpkin encrusted grouper and that was awesome. For dessert, I ordered the sticky toffee date pudding. This was a table favorite. It tasted like the holidays. I thought this place was fantastic. We came to this establishment based off a family members recommendation, and I do not regret it. Living in Florida, I have yet to find a place like this that has chefs and not cooks and you can easily see the genuine passion that goes into preparing each dish. Spinach Salad ($7), easily the best salad I've ever had, I'm not even a huge spinach fan. Potatos were good, honey glaze for the chicken was dilicious and it was very moist and tender. P.S. for the love of Pete try the lime mojitos, they are amazing!! Please note that this place isn't that cheap, but a very beautiful place to wine and dine or for business. Our experience here was one of the best we've had to date. First, make a reservation! We made ours through open table a couple hours before arriving and for other reviewers I think this would probably eliminate people having issues with the wait time. Our son has a laundry list of food allergies and our server was very knowledgable and patient with us as we literally asked 100 questions like "is there corn syrup in that, what oil do you all fry in, is butter used in that" etc etc etc. I hate having to be that person but with a kid who literally could end up in the hospital, I am so reluctant to let him eat out. When his food came I thought they used butter on the beans and even made the server try one, which he totally did and reassured me multiple times it was just how they seasoned it. He went the extra mile anyway just to be sure by asking the chef. It was such a joy to get to see my 2 yr old eat something that he actually enjoyed knowing he wasn't going to get sick from it! He literally threw his head back every time he gobbled up a green bean! We had a party of six and all our dishes were so delish! I loved the fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits along with the short ribs! We also loved the little cheese biscuits they brought out before the apps. We will certainly be back and I am SO happy to have found a truly Farm to Table in Greenville! It was worth the trip from Charlotte just to eat here. read more

Went for dinner with my family here and really enjoyed the food, service and ambiance. Let me start with the best part...the service. They get 5 stars for service. It was packed but they noted that we had asked for a booth in our reservation and sat us at one. We sat for a couple minutes and our server was helping another table so a different server came by, greeted us, got us water and by that time our server was there to talk to us about the menu. Our server (Joe C) was awesome. He was friendly, put us at ease, didn't overly hover, patiently listened to my 3 year old order her meal and was just great. I was also impressed with how quickly our food came out and the food runners bringing it all out at once. The next best part about Soby's is definitely their food. I ordered the Kale salad...so good...I gobbled it up in about 5 minutes and my only complaint is I wish it had been bigger...because it was that good. I also got the roasted vegetable entree which was delicious as well but I do think for the price there should have been more vegetables on the plate...unless they were all organic and local then I can justify the price for that portion. My husband got the beet salad and loved it. He also got the flat iron steak which he said was good as well. The ambiance was also very pleasant. It was packed but didn't seem too noisy or crowded. We were seated near the kitchen and I loved being able to see them cooking the food and plating it up. I can't wait to go back and have already told my husband this is where we will be going for our next date night. I really want to try the beet salad, butternut squash soup and of course get the amazing kale salad again. Hubby and I went to Soby's last night to celebrate his 60th birthday. People, let me tell you, this place is just wonderful. The fried calamari was hot and crisp and delish! They must coat it with cornmeal. Perfect! I ordered Shrimp & Grits. Awesome sauce. Just awesome. Creamy grits . . . plump, numerous shrimp. Hubby ordered one of the specials - Grouper, on basmati rice & haricot verts with a coconut sauce to die for. The Grouper was tender and flavorful. They didn't smother it with flavors to hide the freshest fish we've had in ages. Kudos. And, as if all this wonderful food weren't enough, our server, Ashley, was absolutely charming and willingly, energetically helpful. She even went ACROSS THE STREET to get an events book so we could check out other restaurants and activities for our first visit to this fab town. During a recent trip to Greenville, I stumbled across this place on a walk downtown on a Sunday. In the mood for brunch and not looking to spend too much, my group and I walked in and got seated. Once we were seated, we were immediately thrown by how great the service was, and how friendly (and really, going above and beyond) great the staff was at both the knowledge of all food items as well as recommendations for tourists. Being a Sunday, they did a brunch. There wasn't a dish I tried that I didn't like - and the variety was fantastic. You had your traditional breakfast foods, plenty of pastas and salads, fish, carved meats, and desserts. For less than $20 for the buffet, this was one of the better deals i've stumbled across. $3.01 "craft your own" mimosas and bloody marys were great too. I tried my hand at a mimosa with pomegranate juice and it was fantastic. They didn't skimp on the champagne either. I highly recommend this place. We were walk-ins, and we were lucky to get seated - I highly recommend reservations. read more

The hand carved meat station is some of the best I've ever had... one week was a perfectly cooked roast beef and the following week was succulent pork loin. 1. Do not go here if you have a large party as they are unable to handle and set expectations appropriately. We had a large party and were unaware that we would sit at three separate tables (with one table being much smaller than the other two). This restaurant is located downtown near a hotel and I would have thought they could handle a large group better. We expressed our disappointment to multiple staff members at the restaurant and rather than acknowledging any type of miscommunication, our concerns were dismissed hastily. Here's what I believe when servicing customers in my own work - set expectations. Manage expectations. Communicate clearly. That did not happen here. Additionally, I believe it is important to own mistakes. Any time the mark is missed, own it. But rather than dealing with our disappointment, the staff did nothing. They could have offered us a free drink or even provided a few free appetizers, but they didn't. They could have had the manager come by and greet us and at least apologize, but nope. Nothing. In fact, we were told we would enjoy the food so much, it wouldn't matter. It is clear to me that this restaurant knows nothing about hospitality. If Greenville wants to become a "destination" then restaurants like this one will need to up their game. And the food was a major disappointment. It was all just okay. Nothing to write home about and definitely, it was not worth the money we spent. Here's a rundown on the food, drink, and service... 2. The bread/biscuits were warm but not that tasty. They were just okay. 3. I had fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. These were the best thing I ate at Soby's. They were good. But they were not "really good." Not worth returning for. 4. My salmon was a bit overlooked and dry. Salmon is standard. You just *should not* mess it up. As far as I'm concerned, this salmon was messed up. When I can cook a tastier salmon dish than a restaurant, it is a major disappointment. 5. My drink was a blackberry/ginger concoction. It too was just okay. Drinkable, but not memorable. 6. Service was not great. My friend asked for a straw. The server brought her a straw in his hand. Who the h**l does that? It wasn't wrapped in anything and it likely had his fingerprints on it. Yuck. THAT DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF HAVING A STRAW. First, my preference is having a straw wrapped in clear wrapping. As a second option, at least use a napkin to pick it up. Especially if I'm dishing out $50+ for a meal. Also, why did we even have to ask for straws? Are they some new innovation in food service? Many people prefer using straws at restaurants. That ain't new. 7. My knife was dirty and my other silverware was just "passable" in terms of how it looked cleanliness-wise. So, I asked for a new set of silverware. The server seemed to have forgotten my request. So, I asked AGAIN for a "full set of silverware." He brought me one knife rather than the full set. Now, I had explained earlier that I had a problem with my knife specifically (since the knife had the most problems), but if I asked for another set of silverware, why did he just bring me a knife? If I can have it my way at Burger King, why can't I have it my way at a pricey establishment? Don't make amendments to my request - bring me what I asked for. All that said, I have no plans to return to return to Soby's, and given the priciness of the food, I cannot recommend it. I spent four great days in Greenville and Soby's was the low point. If you need to eat, try the many other great restaurants on Main and in Greenville. I was totally charmed by Greenville, but not so much by Soby's. read more

This beautiful cocktail has jello around the rim which is not only pleasing to the eye but tastes deliciously tart and sweet at the same time. The flavor actually reminds me of those sour patch kids I used to gobble up at the movies as a teenager, so I guess there is a bit of nostalgia involved for me as well. Dinner last weekend was superb. The pomegranate martini was the perfect complement to my Yellowfin tuna with Carolina Gold grits and cumin cilantro dressing. Ray, our server, was very forthcoming on recommendations for meals, from the appetizer to the main course. Dined here for the first time for dinner after hearing such raving reviews. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. They have a lot of seating, both indoors and outdoors. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our waitress was very accommodating and shared the story behind Soby's with us! They have a huge wine selection and the waitstaff is very helpful in finding one to suit your liking. The menu is not huge but does offer a range of meat and seafood options. My only suggestion is to add more vegetarian options. I had the vegetarian vegetable plate (the only vegetarian option on the menu) and I was somewhat underwhelmed. Left with the biggest headache, $100 less and very disappointed since we had been looking forward to trying Sobys out. Almost same menu as Sassafras's-but without any dynamic taste. Soby's is a solid 4 star place. The service was great and our waiter mentioned that he had been there going on 10 years. We sat on the top level overlooking the kitchen, so it felt a little like Hell's Kitchen. Everything was going smoothly in the kitchen despite the hustle and bustle, so we did not notice any Gordon Ramsey obscenity outburst from the kitchen area. We were there early, but reservations are recommended as the large restaurant got full fast. It was packed by the time we left. On to the food, the wife and I split the fried green tomato app at the suggestion of our waiter and it was quite enjoyable with the pimento cheese fondue sauce. It was a great way to start our meal. For mains, I chose the hunter style rabbit and the wife got a grouper special. Overall their rabbit dish is good, but my rabbit was a little dry. The highlight of my plate was the creamy risotto which actually included some pieces of rabbit as well. The wife's fish was cooked perfectly with some cajun creole spices and came with some asparagus and cheesy grits. She also really enjoyed her basil bourbon drink, and they do have an extensive list of cocktails. My local Thomas Creek beer was good but the restaurant has more of a wine vibe and I am sure their wine list is good. Overall, a solid meal. read more

What an AWESOME Sunday Brunch for under $20 per person! We had reservations (12 people) and they were ready and waiting for us! Valet parking (I HATE to pay for parking!) but some things cannot be helped--we were in the middle of downtown Greenville! I'm not a drinker but the others at the table who ordered from the Bloody Mary and Mimosa menu were raving. The food was varied and plentiful! I tried to sample everything: my egg-white omelet was cooked to perfection at the omelet station--the cook was a whiz, running 4 omelets at a time! The shrimp and grits were okay--I've had better but I must confess that I didn't leave any on my plate! I tasted the casseroles, salads, and all of the breakfast extras (bacon, sausage, biscuits, etc) and all were good. The desserts were a hit with all of us. Such variety and cleverly done in mini servings so that you could sample a lot of different things and not gorge yourself. Soby's is one of the better restaurants we discovered on our Smokey Mountains motorcycle road trip. The restaurant is typical South Carolina cooking. I had the green fried tomatoes which were great and the shrimp and grits. The place seemed to be well designed for the foodies. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the food and ingredients. The one downside is that's it a relatively big place and seemed a bit touristy. There are a bunch more restaurants along this same street so lots to pick from if you don't love the atmosphere once you get there. **Be sure to check out the cascading waterfalls and the suspension bridge park right around the corner off Main Street. read more

Even the music (which bothered another diner) doesn't bother me...it just adds a bit more whimsy to a place which I'd describe as "fine dining that doesn't take itself too seriously". I would probably give Soby's 5 stars, if not for the fact that each time I have been there, there was always one thing that wasn't quite right. Most recently, last Friday night, I had the she-crab soup. I suspect they didn't brown the roux long enough, because the soup had the distinct aftertaste of raw flour. I blame the fact that it was "Foodie Fest" week here in Greenville, so they were probably having to cook a lot more volume of some items than normal...but that's just me making excuses. My trout, also on the foodie fest menu, was spectacular. And in my mind, you can never go wrong with the white chocolate banana cream pie.
