A delightful time was had. Been a long time and I think it's had a few name changes over the years. Went to celebrate a friend's birthday. Ordered a simple meal that was pretty darn good. Love chicken wings and they were fried to perfection. It's the sauce on the side that was phenomenal. Wide spaced seating inside with both tables and high bar stools. Also the cigar crew was outside also being served. Our waitress Yani was so sweet and constantly checked on us. Like the ambiance and the service. Worth a try to explore local spots. I purchased a table for brunch through Eventbrite -- nearly $200 -- so I was expecting a well-organized, enjoyable experience. We were seated immediately, which was a good start... but that's where it ended. We sat for a while and never had a server come to our table. No one greeted us, no drinks, no menus -- nothing. Saw that Sofie's Steakhouse opened recently and was happy to stop in for lunch. The owner, Ahmad, greeted me at the door and I made my way to the bar. Since I was only the one at the bar, the gladly owner made my drink and we had a friendly chat about the new restaurant and how excited he was to bring the steakhouse concept to the area. Since it was just lunch, I enjoyed the lamb meatballs and I promise to order it every time I step foot in this place... it was so good!! Not to mention, there are more than enough TVs to enjoy a game or two. I plan to go back for dinner because their menu had a few other dishes I wanted to try including pizza (I mean who doesn't love pizza!). The missing star is really just due to the inability to tell if the place is open during the day. There's no sign that indicates they're open and the doors are tinted so it appeared close mid-day. I was so excited to see a new steakhouse was coming to the University area, as many know is a food DESERT! This Sofie's used to be a Hickory Tavern, and unfortunately, it still looks exactly like one. Never judge a book by its cover, some of the best food you can get are from little hole in the wall joints you would never expect! Unfortunately that is not the case for this spot. I made reservations for my boyfriend and I for our anniversary & were looking for a little bit of ambiance! We were a little disappointed to see upon entry, it looks exactly like the Hickory Tavern was left, same tables, chairs, layout, and including the sports bar like bud light neon signs everywhere. Not exactly the ideal setting for an "upscale" restaurant. The only thing new I noticed in the restaurant layout was a new pizza oven and some blue ceiling fans. Upon ordering our food, I ordered a Cantaloupe Martini, which honestly was way to sweet for me, and it seemed like the rest of the cocktails were made using typical store bought mixers and pucker. I could not finish my martini. So my boyfriend and I decided to split a bottle of the Decoy Pino nior. We go to order our food, and after being told they were out of the Prime Filet for the night, I decided to go with the Lamb Chops and my Boyfriend the bone in Wagyu for market price. We receive our food and immediately I notice my lamb is grayer than a storm cloud. I look a few bites, against my better judgement, and then just continued eating the asparagus. The Wagyu, I'm not sure if it was A5 because the server, sweet as could be, had no idea what that was. Unfortunately the "Wagyu" was dry, under seasoned. For the menu pricing, I had expected better. As you probably guessed, we love to celebrate an occasion. Tonight, we are celebrating my husband's cousin Kerry's birthday at Sophie's Steakhouse. I want to start out by saying I love the atmosphere... the DJ is decent - we are in good the drinks are good. Now as for the food.... can you say Salt?!?! The appetizers were salty, with the exception of the spinach dip tasted like it was diluted. My steak salad would have been perfect if my steak wasn't chewy like rubber. Now for the wait staff, there are approximately 23 people in our party and we have only one waitress. I will say that she is very nice but her skills are below par. I have been here twice and had a negative experience both times. I will never choose to come here at all, the service is slow and lacking knowledge of food items and the Mad grab for money and lacking of described menu items. I ordered a crab cake sandwich and it was a bland patty of mystery meat and the waitress of 30 days trys to justify it after you take my card before I even taste anything. It was 2 people who returned that, it was disgusting and should be removed from menu. I had 1 drink and it was ok. That crab cake was definitely a store bought frozen patty. read more

Came for lunch and my first sign to run was the fact that at 12:00, there were only two other people in a huge dining room. I ordered the Prime Ribeye medium rare with a loaded baked potato. The baked potato had a few cheese shreds that got hard in the microwave. I asked for butter and it was clearly dropped on the floor. It had crumbs and fuzz all over it. The steak came out with no char on it and the middle was completely gray and well done. I took a bite and it was extremely tough, flavorless, and DEFINITELY not prime grade, nor worth the almost $30 price tag. I told the waitress about the steak and showed her the butter and she just stared at me. She didn't want to take it back. At this point, after seeing what my friend ordered and the filthy butter, I didn't want anything else. She stood there arguing with me that it was medium rare. It wasn't even medium well. She finally took it and then came back to the table to argue that the steak was cooked perfectly. It was inedible to say the least. Save your time and money. read more

New to the area, Sofie's has a decent menu and a great staff interested in pleasing their customer's. This is a big space as it was previously a popular bar so it has been pretty empty on my 2 visits. We started out with lobster nachos that were really good. I ordered a salmon salad on my first visit which came out quickly and was really good. We also ordered a pasta dish, crab cakes, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. On my next visit I ordered to go salmon, potatoes and veggies and it was also really good. Check them out if you're in the area. read more

Okay so I've been eyeing this spot since they put the sign up while it was in the process of opening. There aren't a lot of steakhouses in the university area and my husband loves steak. Me on the other hand, I don't eat a lot of meat but usually I go for the seafood when we go to a steakhouse. The inside is huge with outdoor seating. Booth seating can easily hold 8 people. My Mom also loves steak so I brought her here for lunch. It was a late lunch around 1:30. I was intentionally trying to avoid a crowd and it worked. No one stays at the front, per my personal experience as well as observation while dining so just hang around a bit and they'll find you. The wait to be seated wasn't long. What stood out upon entering was the smell. It wasn't a bad smell per de but not the tantalizing smell I was expecting. We ordered an appetizer of bbq wings. We had to wait for our wings to arrive before we had an opportunity to place our order. I'm not sure if they forgot about us or if there was a mix up since one person took the appetizer order and someone else actually waited on us the remainder of the time BUT it took so long for our food to come that our server came and asked us what we ordered. Upon telling her she went to the kitchen and came right back with my shrimp burger and fries and my moms steak and baked potato. Soooo my fries were cold. But I imagine if they were hot they would have been really good. The shrimp burger I just could not go through with. I'm sure someone would like it. I just couldn't get with the mixture of the ingredients and their flavor. I sent it back and our server graciously brought the lobster nachos I ordered. My Mom said her 8 oz prime filet was 'ok' but that she's had better. The replacement lobster nachos were okay. A little bland for me but I LOVE spicy food. What I love about the menu is that the dishes are eclectic and not the typical stuff you see. The wings we had were ok. Unfortunately we didn't have anything that we'd order again BUT I would definitely bring my husband back so he can try for himself and I would try again. The service was really good and everyone was very friendly. Busing could go quicker. There weren't a lot of people eating but the table across from us wasn't bussed the entire time we were there. Go somewhere else. Came here for their New Years Eve event where we purchased a VIP table. Gave an extra star for the DJ who was great. 1) they ran out of champagne for the champagne toast at midnight so we and many others didn't get any. How do you run out of champagne on NYE? 2) there was supposed to be a waitress for the VIP tables that never showed up to our table once we arrived. I had a friend who arrived earlier for her table and said the waitress only came by once for their first round of drinks and never came back the entire night not even to provide the bill. My table ended up going to the bar which took at least 15 minutes to get a drink because it was so packed 3) the organizers had a non-VIP rando take our table's goodie bag from our table for herself and when I addressed with someone who worked there he made a bunch of excuses about the bag and why it was removed and didn't replace our bag (but the other tables still got to keep their bags, and mind you it was part of the cost of the VIP table price). In retrospect I should've just snatched that bag back from the rando but I let it go 4) the same worker that I complained about the goodie bag and lack of wait service I guess took pity on our table and offered us access to the buffet that wasn't originally part of our ticket price. If I would've paid an extra $25 for this basic buffet I would've been mad; if this is representative of what Sofie's offer for food then go somewhere else: basic mixed salad, random cut up fruit, meatballs, cold pasta Alfredo and something else that was popular and ran out quickly so I never got any. read more

I'm saddened to write this because I was really looking forward to a decent steak and some jazz music; however, we did not have a great experience. The server was okay, and the drinks and banging shrimp appettizer were the only good things about this place. We went because they advertised a jazz night, but we went from 7pm-815ish and the musician never played. To add , this place still looks like a sports bar and not a steakhouse. There were minimal changes to the decor, and therefore, the ambiance when you walk-in instantly had us nervous this would not go as we hoped. The place is advertised as an upscale steakhouse, which between all of the YVs showing sports and the servers who had no dress code, one of which walked around with headphones in his ear, this was anything but a sports bar selling overly price bland food. My bf ordered the seafood pasta, which was on the menu with shrimp, salmon, and scallops. However, there were no scallops, and instead, the kitchen put calamari. There was zero communication with us that they were out of scallops and would replace them with calamari. No question if it was okay, if he was allergic, or if he wanted to change his mind. My steak was cooked great but had no seasoning. My real issue was my baked potato. It was ice cold with a STICK of butter in the middle. I asked to have it microwaved to melt the butter, but instead, they brought me a third potato, which was also cold with another stick of butter. Lastly, the manager (possibly owner from reading the other reviews) was walking around talking to everyone, seemed to purposely ignore us when we clearly were unhappy. He came all the way up to the table behind my bf and turned around without coming to us and then did the exact thing again coming up to the table directly behind me and turning around without ever stopping by our table. Finally, we asked for the manager to come over and got the bartender instead.... he was nice and apologized; we definitely appreciated him. The manager walking the floor came over after we were ready to pay to ask if we were no longer staying for music. He never asked about our food or experience. We will not be back. When I first got here I don't know if it was a bar/lounge or a restaurant. There was an older couple and a like a work dinner happening but right on the other side a bar area packed with a dj playing music. To the food....... I've never been anywhere that the waiter told me not to order certain things on the menu and that it was happened here, so I was turned off and didn't order anything. Our first time here. We were here for early dinner around 4pm on a Wednesday. It was only around 5 people there. Foul smell coming from the restroom area. Was not greeted when we came in because there was only one person covering the door and tables. The wife ordered spring rolls, pecan crusted rainbow trout, mushroom risotto, asparagus, cherry cheese cake, and mimosa. The spring rolls were good. Fried just right crispy and flakey served with chili sauce. My wife said everything was good. Her only complaint was that the trout was not crusted, and it only had 2 pecans on top. I ordered the prime ribeye (medium), mashed potatoes, and spinach. I also ordered lamb chops, roasted baby yukon potatoes, and asparagus to go. The prime ribeye was cooked a little over medium, more like medium well, but was really good. The spinach was cooked perfectly but was salty until I stirred it up. The mashed potatoes needed some help, they were dry and needed more butter, cream, heavy cream, or milk. I have not tasted my to go order yet, so I will update after I have. read more

Attended a 70th birthday party for a friend today. The place was packed with football fans (football opening weekend). The area that was set aside was large enough for the 35 (ish) group and the service was exemplary. Our two waitresses (Lisa and Haley) were always available and always serving us quickly with no errors. Yes, the football was loud, but isn't that to be expected? The orders of food were served buffet style for the guests, wings, meatballs, spinach dip and chips, crab cakes and bruschetta. All were tasty. Went to a function there Saturday December 10, 2022. Drinks watered down, rum punch, or margarita could not get it right even paid for an xtra shot still watered down.. Wings ok but very small, crab dip taste like a lot of filler only. Service for a large event only 4 servers. Owner walked around like he was mad all night, no smile greeting to people he passed or passed him. Gave two stars because the event was fun and good people, even though that's not the restaurant doing. Oh new server we had could not get mother right, add things to bill we paid for already. A group of friends met here for dinner & drinks. We sat outside on the patio since the weather was nice. Our waitress was amazing, she did an awesome job, especially dealing with a large group. She was very friendly, attentive, professional and cool. The owner stopped by to chat and was super friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Lobster Nachos and Chicken Nachos (not on menu) as appetizers, both were delicious and large portions. The entrees were even more impressive, the Salmon and fresh vegetables was amazing, the brick oven veggie pizza was great and enough to share with the entire table. I ordered the lemon pepper wings, perfection! The wings were fresh, hot, the right amount of crispness and seasoning!! House salads were delicious, many other plates ordered- no complaints at all. This restaurant has great potential. The ambiance could use and overhaul. The ambiance does not fit the food. The food is Fabulous. Everything we ordered was Delicious however we started off with a rocky experience. They unfortunately were under staffed which I'm sure was because of Covid and the holiday weekend. Server was new and was not familiar with the menu and the food he was serving. When I cut into the Ribeye Steak, I totally forgot about all the mishaps. The manager handled the issues most graciously. We will definitely give them another chance. I actually can't wait to get another Steak. New beginnings and new adjustments. The staff was friendly and I loved the interaction with all levels of this restaurant to make your experience top notched. Nothing about Sofie's says steakhouse except the sign. It's more of a sports bar that offers steaks. We have been twice and do not enjoy the cooked food. The salads are fine however. From the dirty paper menus to the sticky tables, it doesn't scream clean, and there isn't much of a vibe from the layout or decor. Lots of TVs is nice for watching games, but the TVs are all different colors, so you better know your team's logo! Service was underwhelming, but it is everywhere "due to COVID" so I won't fault them for bringing out the wrong items and taking forever to serve us, though when I was a server, I absolutely took advantage of notes, and I promise on the other side, patrons don't mind! The patio looks like a fun place to watch a game and have a beer if you need somewhere on this side of town to be social and grab a cold one, but be aware that smoking is allowed on the patio. read more
