We were seated quickly by the owner, Azad. He's such a nice gentleman, who really cares about his customers! Amazingly, he recognized me as one of the Yelp elites! I have been to Sofra Grill for a few of their Yelp events and I guess he remembered my face. I've also visited a few times after the events because the food was memorable. This dish is my favorite on the menu. If you like lamb shank, you've got to try this! The rice is fluffy and moist, because it's baked with the shank. And all that for only $20 feels like a literal steal here in The Bay Area. Not only do you get an ample amount of chicken and rice, but you also get some of their housemade bread to eat it with. I've also had this dish where the chicken is cooked and served over the bread, but that ends up sogging out the bread, so this way that they serve it is perfect. The Meh: *Outdoor dining is two two-top tables right out front and leaves much to be desired, but if you want it, it's there. *Make sure to pay at the counter. We just sat around waiting for the bill but I guess you have to go to the counter. Nobody told me! *Old man mode engaged: They need to turn down the music. Especially if you're sitting all the way at the far end under the speaker. *shakes fists at clouds* The Ugly: *Parking is very odd here, as there is some street parking but it was all taken on our visit. I guess you can park in that parking lot adjacent to the Goodwill & Fart & Sminal? Came here on a whim with some friends and wow wow. This place is truly a hidden gem in a hidden place! Was lucky to snag a table around 7PM on a Sunday with no wait, although do keep in mind that this place does fill up quick since the seating is limited. We shared the Muhammara flatbread, which had a fire roasted red pepper with walnuts + gooey cheese topping. The sweetness of the roasted peppers complimented the savory cheese quite well. The texture of the flatbread was chef's kiss and we devoured this shortly. The star of the night was the lamb shank. Holy moly. The meat was fall off the bone tender and the presentation was like a magic show. A homemade dough like the Vegas sphere encasing what will be the most beautiful and tasty piece of meat you'll ever have. The server cut off the top of the dough to reveal the present beneath it. And for those who steer away from lamb, I'm happy to share that this meat is not gamey! For dessert, we tried the Baklava ice cream which includes 3 scoops of vanilla sprinkled with a generous portion of crushed pistachios and baklava. I loved the texture of the ice cream and appreciated the flavors, but wished the baklava was not soggy and had a crunchhhhh with each bite. What we got: - Beyti ~ This was so good and plated beautifully. The lamb and beef interior was soft and juicy. Wrapped in flatbread, it absorbs much of the flavor from the sauce and the meat filling! Comes served with rice and salad. - Lamb Shank ~ baked to perfection indeed! AND comes with a tableside carving! Lamb shank was SUPER tender. Rice is baked with the dish, allowing it to absorb a lot of the lamb shank flavors. Each bite was packed full of flavor. Garlic Sauce and a Red Spicy sauce is served on the side. Delicious food and great service. This place is punching above it's weight class, for what looks like a small casual restaurant, the table service is great. Even though the place is small it has nice touches like metal water glasses, nice plates, and good presentation. The block it's on is unassuming. I got mildly concerned as I was looking for a larger restaurant experience, but I'm glad I rolled with it since everything was good. Each item of the meze sampler was fresh and yummy... Hummus was so rich and creamy, quality olive oil.. labneh was perfect to dip the falafel.. and the muhammara was the best version of this dish I've had. I loved the Sofra bread. Hummus w/ steak - a plate of chopped grilled steak with a ring of hummus drizzled with olive oil. There was more steak than hummus. The steak was nice and lean and lightly seasoned. It complemented the hummus well. Flavors were fresh and not too heavy. The pita that came with this dish was warm and fluffy. We decided to pair this with a salad for a complete meal. Fatoush salad - The lettuce base was romaine and drizzled with sweet pomegranate molasses. Came with plenty of sliced cucumbers, sliced radish, cherry tomatoes, and feta. Everything was crisp and fresh. Vinegar and oil dressing came on the side. The crispy pita was actually deep fried pita bread. It was definitely tasty albeit on the oily side and a nice addition to the salad. Falafel plate - The falafel were in mini donut shapes which is clever because it increases the amount of crispy surface area of the falafel. The accompanying baba ganoush was nice and smoky in flavor. Since we already had hummus for the table we asked to substitute the hummus side for muhammara, which is a red pepper dip that is sweet and had a great flavor. The plate came with a couple of small pieces of pita to have with the dips. There was also a small salad on the plate. This dish is a great value to be able to try a little bit of everything non-meat. Salmon plate - The plate came with four pieces of salmon that were nicely seasoned and tender. It was served on top of rice and had a small salad on the plate. We went during a weekend lunch and it just so happened all the tables just filled up when we walked in, so we had to wait around 25 minutes. Just know that it can get busy on the weekends! read more

My husband has to travel a lot for work so we make very frequent trips to SFO. His flights are almost always super early in the morning so we'll often stay in the city the night before to make things easier. The fun part about this is that it allows us to try new restaurants all the time! This time we decided on Sofra as hubby had a craving for Mediterranean. I wondered in my head if we should make a reservation but it was still a little early in the evening so I figured we'd be okay. We walked in and the place was packed (it's small). They told us it would be about a 30 minute wait, took our phone number and said they'd text us when our table was ready. We popped over to the Smart & Final across the street just to kill time and got a text about 10 minutes later. We were seated and given water in the prettiest hammered metal cups, with a pitcher of cold water for refills which I always appreciate. The menu was full of new and exciting options, it was hard to decide! My husband was craving a gyro and while they don't offer exactly that, they have some things that are similar. He opted for the Beyti which is seasoned ground lamb and beef wrapped in flat bread and covered in a tomato sauce (comes with saffron rice on the side). I went with the Musakhan which is roasted chicken over saffron rice and sumac onions. They cover the whole dish with their flatbread before they roast it so everything gets nicely steamed inside. They cut it open at your table to reveal the most beautiful meal! Service was very nice and attentive throughout and the food was absolutely superb. My husband couldn't stop talking about his dish. We went back to Sofra Grill as I was dying to taste their Lamb Shank. I'm telling you, the lamb shank did not disappoint!!! First the presentation was so cool!!! Then the shank was so tender that the meat fell off the bone with just using your fork. The rice was so tasty with the sauce from the shank! I ate that shank like I drank my water. Now you see it, now you don't, lol. My partner also had the lamb chops and it was grilled perfectly. Tender as well with just the right seasonings. I am almost speechless... this was definitely one of the best Turkish restaurants in the Bay Area. The meat was grilled perfectly and had a great texture. The salad had a lovely flavor and the bread paired so well with the garlic and spiced sauces. The rice was also well flavored too. While I usually have a stand out item, I actually had none this time. Each portion of the plate was distinct in texture, flavor, and taste. I was waiting to try their signature dish, Mosa Khan (check out the video) We ordered Mosa Khan beef kabobs this time. My favorite drink wth Mediterranean food is hot tea. Such a good spot to get your Mediterranean food fix! I'm so glad I decided to give it a try after searching for a lunch spot in the area. I came on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30pm and there was a wait (probably about 15 minutes). There's a handful of tables inside and two outside. The only downside is that the tables are so large (made for group of 4-6) and won't split, so a party of two would be taking up a table when two different parties can be using it. Tried the steak shawarma and Adana kebab (spicy minced lamb & beef). Both were seasoned well and flavorful, paired well with the fluffy rice. The pita was warm and fluffy -- you gotta dip it in the white sauce. Salad was a nice balance to have on the side, the pineapples and strawberries added a nice touch to it. Both plates were devoured! I definitely want to try the mixed grill during my next visit. It's a large plate with a variety of the proteins (beef, steak, chicken, etc.) on a bed of rice. I saw a few tables sharing it! If you're waiting to pick up or drop off at SFO, this is THE spot. We came while waiting to pick up a friend whose flight was unexpectedly landing early. The service and staff here were incredibly friendly and helped us dine and pay quickly so that we could make our pickup. While the location looks unassuming, don't be fooled. The food is AMAZING. There was such a "home-y" vibe through the menu. Simple and not overcomplicated, the dishes were perfect to hit the spot for a Mediterranean fill. We particularly loved the baked feta dish as a shared group appetizer. The interior is not very large but most orders that I saw were for to-go on a Saturday afternoon. I think this spot is best suited for a group of 3-4. Larger groups might need to wait. Prices were incredibly fair and we left feeling so full. Their Hummus is creamy and yummy. Then we split the Mixed Grill Platter, Salmon, and Lamb Chop. The Mixed Grill said it was for two but seriously, it could've fed four adults. Everything on that platter was delicious. My son loved every bite even though he had ordered the Salmon and enjoyed that just as much. The other two kids wanted the Lamb Chop, which was so tender. I had to invite my friend along to try Sofra Grill's famous LAMB SHANK, tender braised lamb shank over rice, but uniquely wrapped in homemade dough baked. Usually brought to the table whole, it's a nice little show when they cut open the bread and the steam and aroma of the lamb shanks bursts forth and we go "ooooooooh!" Paired with the MEZZA PLATTER of falafel, hummus, muhammara, baba ganoush, dolma & labneh. And their housemade MIXED PICKLES. We were happy, and promptly demolished every morsel set before us! I've been here over 5 times. My go-to is the Chicken Shawarma wrap w/ tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and toom/garlic sauce. It's an affordable option and it's delicious. The toom is addictive and elevates the wrap to another level. The steak shawarma is good too, but I find that it is a little chewy sometimes, so I opt for the chicken. First time I ordered the combo mezza platter with falafel, hummus, muhammara, baba ganoush, dolma & labneh. I don't like dolma in general but the rest of it was yummy. Each dip has a different flavor profile and texture. Warm pita bread is served on the side. The kofte plate had char grilled minced beef with spices, rice, salad, and pita bread. The kofte was very flavorful, well seasoned, and tender. The rice was buttery and rich, and it helped absorb the juices from the kofta. The salad was standard, but fresh and brightly-colored. The tawa dish (eggplant stewed in a tomato sauce with grilled onions, tomatoes, toasted almonds & sweet peppers) was delicious and filling. It was thick/chunky and not too acidic. I ordered and asked if I could take any seat she said no that they had a list and if I wanted to put my name on it for the inside seats. I just ordered my food to go. I ordered a steak shawarma bowl, steak shawarma wrap, tres leches baklava and the berry juice. All was so good and you got a big portion for what you are paying, you could totally share with someone. The food was so season perfect and it was freshly made. the Ambiance is so cute, you walk in and all the details and decor makes you feel like you are on vacation eating at a cute, cozy hidden restaurant. A gem and a half. A real Turkish delight. We had time to kill before picking up relatives at the airport. A nearby pizza place had closed, and we walked up the block to find Sofra. We got a Meze platter for $19.95. Falafel, hummus, muhammara, baba ganoush , dolmas and labneh. Every single item was perfect. Hard to pick a favorite but if I had to, the falafels were simply amazing. I wish I'd taken a picture, but after the first bite my wife and I were fully committed to continuous, concentrated consumption. The staff was very courteous, attentive and appreciative of our compliments. We finished with the baklava, which was up to the same standard as all the other delicacies. After attending a YEE catered by Sofra Grill, I had to come back because everything was so delicious. We picked up dinner to go since they were packed on a Friday night. Even though they were busy handing tables, our order still came out fairly quick. We picked up a salmon skewer plate, chicken skewer plate and a mixed grill for my daughter and boyfriend to share, along with some hummus and baklava. Wow, we probably could have just ordered the mixed grill for all of us because it was so much food! I did like the salmon and chicken shawarma the most, and the rice is so delicious. I've never really understood what a hidden gem place is, but this is the epitome Sofra Grill is a 20 out of 10. We loved it although we were hesitant when we first entered because it is very small and the seats are quite tight. The food was much more than we could've imagined there was so much flavor and the mixed grill was the perfect order to share with everyone. There's not one item we ate that we didn't like the falafel Order is a must we really enjoyed that! We noticed a table with the SOFRA bread. It arrived warm with tum. It was really tasty. We both ordered the Adana kabab which is a lamb beef combo. They say it's spicy. It's well seasoned and moist, but not spicy as in packed with spicy peppers. They do give you a nice spicy red sauce to put on your food. The rice was fragrant and it came with a little iceberg and tomato side salad. While the salad was fresh, the dressing had me wondering if I wasn't a bottled Italian dressing. My friend had the kanufa which is quite large for one, crispy, chewy, sweet...it was great. The table next to us had ordered the mezza platter which looked amazing. Sofra Grill is a hole in the wall restaurant with very limited seats. I was craving hummus and decided to give this place a try and I am so glad I did. Staff here are very nice and accommodating. Hummus (5/5)- the creaminess is unmatched and went perfectly with each bite of rice. I love how smooth the consistency is here. Mixed grill meat platter (2/5)- most of the meats were tough and felt grainy. I really enjoyed one of the meats but everything else was unfortunately not to my palette. Beyti (5/5)- the meat here is succulent unlike the meat platter and I recommend asking for their garlic white sauce because it pairs so well with this dish. A must get dish Overall, the dishes are a hit or miss but I definitely want to come back to try their other dishes. read more

Tried this place yesterday while waiting for someone to land at SFO. Not a lot of seating! And no small tables. I was sat alone at a table for 4, and there was another solo diner sitting at a table for 6. I almost thought the might ask us to sit together. People were waiting outside to be seated. Parking also isnt great, I parked across the street by the goodwill/smart and final. My guess is that's not allowed... but I didn't intend on being there long. I ordered a chicken shawarma wrap, only $11. Pretty reasonable price for the amount of food. I also ordered a mixed grill to go to split with family. It says for 2 people but I comfortably fed 4 adults with it, with a little rice to spare for some other protein we have cooked. White sauce was nice and garlicky, my fave, and the red sauce had a nice kick to it. The food was decent, I can't fairly judge the mixed grill entree since I didn't eat it fresh, but I didn't see any problems with it. I noticed a few people around me were ordering something like a pizza. Maybe a beef kofte flatbread? Not sure. I want to order it next time. They also have steak fries on the menu. We has a work reunion here on a Sunday evening. There was a small wait but not too long. We were served very quickly and our orders were taken with great attention. We got the mezza platter to share and it was soooo good. This was such a nice dish to sample all the different flavors. I loved that each component had it's own little compartment on the tray. I got the Beef Skewers and it came with the beef, rice, salad, and few pieces of flatbread. Everything tasted great. The table was also given a bowl of 2 different sauces in little containers. There was a red one that was spicy and a white one that tasted a a garlic butter. That garlic butter was the garlic butter I've ever had. You bet I took home with me! read more

Amazingly good! I love discovering and trying Mediterranean food. There are so many Nick the Greek locations around, so I like to branch out and support other places. I came across this spot in South San Francisco. The portion was generous, and the bowl was packed with fresh ingredients! The owner was super friendly and welcoming. I'll definitely be back to try more dishes. Highly recommend this place as one of the best Mediterranean spots around. read more
