When my husband asks for Chinese food, we go on Yelp to find Chinese cuisine that serves authentic Taiwanese cuisine. We were delighted to find that there's no fee for Sunday parking, so we definitely scored big time! We waited only for a few minutes, and then we were quickly seated at an adorable round booth, making the atmosphere feel cozy and private. They only give those to parties of four or more. The other tables were open-feeling. We scanned the QR code for the menu and ordered the following: Premium Jasmine Green Tea - 5/5 stars. A must-get! Aromatic and perfect with all dishes. A pot of tea is $9. Pork Soup Dumplings - 4.5/5 stars. Delicate skin. Be very careful when picking them up. Have your spoons ready. My only wish is that they served julienned ginger alongside them. The dumplings and broth were so tasty, we forgo the dipping sauce. Homestyle Braised Pork Belly - 5/5 stars. Delicate and sublime with the perfect ratio between the fat and meat. Fish Slices & Green Peppercorn - 5/5 stars. They gave us a good amount of fresh fish, and don't be fooled into thinking this dish isn't spicy. It has fresh green peppercorn. After swallowing, that's when you will feel it. It's pleasant and not Mala spicy. If I could take it, you would be fine. Dry-fried Cauliflower - 4/5 stars. Cooked to perfection as it's not overly done, and it lightened up the lunch dishes. Our only comment was that the garlic was barely cooked. Ugh, we had garlic breath for the rest of the day. These dishes do not come with rice, so if you desire a bowl of rice, it is $4 per bowl. Everything was made fresh, and the restaurant, including the bathrooms, was clean. The waitstaff are friendly without hovering over you. If you need anything extra, they are there with their tablets in hand, ready to assist you. They do offer desserts, but we forwent them as we were headed elsewhere for dessert. Great location, easy to find parking, and fresh food. We'll definitely be back. read more

Ambiance: Sofun Noodle Bar has a clean, contemporary interior with a modern aesthetic. Even the restrooms were thoughtfully stocked with Aesop soap, which was a nice touch. It's refreshing to enjoy Chinese food in such a bright, stylish, and well-maintained space. Food: If you come here, definitely order one of their rice noodle dishes since that's what they're known for. The Signature Lu Fen was flavorful, comforting, and satisfying--I would happily order it again and would love to try another rice noodle dish on a future visit. The Spicy Fried Pork Intestines, however, were disappointing. They were extremely dry, almost as if they had been refried, and the dish contained far more dried red peppers than actual pork intestines. The balance was off, and I wouldn't order it again. The fried rice was a solid choice, and the other dishes we ordered were enjoyable. We finished the meal with the Sweet Tofu Soup, which is essentially warm douhua served with lightly sweetened syrup. It was light, comforting, and the perfect way to end a flavorful meal. They also bring complimentary gum with the check, which is a thoughtful finishing touch. Parking: There is plenty of street parking and nearby parking lots, and parking is free after 6 PM, making dinner visits especially convenient. I discovered Sofun because I was desperately craving stinky tofu, and there are maybe...6?...places in the Tri-State area that even serve it. Yes, I am one of those people who crave stinky tofu. Maybe it's my Taiwanese upbringing. Or maybe I was born with demented taste buds. I mean, who yearns for a dish that smells like the love child of gym socks and hot garbage? Me. I do. Anywho, Sofun was on our way to another spot, so we decided to stop by for lunch....and I couldn't believe how abso-effing authentic and delicious it was. - Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐): Not the full-blown, soft-stewed, CASSEROLE OF FUNK that I would've liked--but I rarely find that outside of Taiwan. This was the less stinky but still gorgeously pungent black Hunan cousin. Crispy outside and soft inside, it was just fermented enough to make my organs shudder a bit but make my taste buds sing madrigals. - Beef & Pickled Pepper (泡椒牛肉): A stir-fry I rarely see and never believed I'd find in suburban NJ of all places. The sliced beef was perfectly cooked and accompanied by some of my favorite spicy pickled peppers and fresh peppercorn in an umami medley of spice that made us want to lick the plate. I kinda did... - Stir-Fried Spicy Cabbage (手撕包菜): A classic but a goodie. Nothing much to say but that it hit all the crunchy, garlicky notes we wanted. - Coconut Sesame Balls (椰蓉麻球): A spontaneous pick for something sweet. This was a nice twist on the classic black sesame-filled balls you usually see. Instead of that ebony paste, we bit into gobs of milky cream--and I was not mad about that. Sofun is our new go-to Sichuan restaurant in NJ! My husband and I LOVE Sichuan food and have been consistently disappointed with the Sichuan food in NJ. We usually have to venture all the way to Flushing to get our fix, but not anymore. We ordered one of our favorite dishes, fish fillet soup with pickled cabbage, and it was incredible. The broth was tasty and rich, the fish was tender, and the soup was loaded with noodles and veggies. We were so pleasantly surprised that they nailed one of our favorite dishes! We also decided to try the beef and pickled cabbage. The beef was so tender and flavorful. The dish also had a good beef/veggie ratio. The ambiance is also very nice and upscale. This was one of our first restaurant stops with our new baby, and we were seated in a nice, quiet corner. We came in here on a Saturday afternoon. It was busy but we got seated quickly. You can cab the menu using the QR code and then the waitress will take your order. The restaurant was clean and bright. Perfect for 2 people but they have booths as well for larger groups. We ordered the tofu and meat sauce rice noodle, stinky tofu, and the Berkshire pork and fried egg! It's been a while since I've been to an authentic Chinese restaurant in north Jersey! I came here on a Tuesday night, and there was no wait for a two-person table. The vibes were really cool; I loved the warm lighting and modern, cozy interior. We ordered the Beef Brisket Noodle and Ground Pork and Fried Egg Noodle, they were both amazing-- so flavorful and authentic! My beef was perfectly tender, and the spice was pretty mild. We also ordered the Tomato and Eggplant, holy sh*t it was so saucy and flavorful; it tasted just like how my dad would make it at home. I would definitely come here again. Some great Chinese food with stuff that's hard to find in America. I actually found this as a Google Ad when looking up food so it was rly just luck. When I saw they had stinky tofu I was immediately sold. Despite this, if you look up stinky tofu and you're not specifically next to summit or in summit you won't find it that way. Anyways, the stinky tofu was sooooo good. It tastes exactly like the ones in Changsha China, possibly even stinkier (a lot of the main stream places weren't that stinky :(). I was so surprised, it's faint but definitely closer to the taste of Taiwan's stinky tofu but with all the yummy sauces of Changsha stinky tofu. I've been on the hunt for truly stinky stinky tofu and this one hit the spot. It was so good I had to get a second one. The rice noodles were also good. The egg was very jammy. The soup dumplings were pretty yummy as well. The shop is also very cute, it reminds me of the mall restaurants in China. It's in a nice area in Summit too so you can go shopping, get cream, or anything afterwards. read more

This place is so cute!! I would say the dishes they serve here are pretty authentic and I enjoyed all the apps I got, but was not blown away by the entrees. For apps, I tried the cucumber salad, popcorn chicken, and the pork soup dumplings. The popcorn chicken pieces could have been a little bigger. For my entree, I had the beef brisket noodle soup. This is one of their most popular items, but for me I felt like it was way too salty. My party also tried the mapo tofu which was a big hit and a great vegetarian option. Did not expect to find authentic Chinese food (with a slightly modern twist) in Summit. We came here for lunch and got a few dim sum dishes including pork soup dumplings, crab and pork soup dumplings, sticky rice with chicken, and black salted egg custard buns. Everything was delicious and prepared very well. Husband also got the spicy beef rice noodles. It was pretty spicy but that's the way he likes it. Keep in mind the portions are small. Soup dumplings typically come in 6 pieces. Here there are only 4. Service was friendly and accommodating. We asked to move to a better table and they obliged. Place is tucked away down a corridor. Best Chinese food in Union County. Can't get any more authentic than this. You won't find things like General Tso's chicken here, but if you are willing to go outside your comfort zone, you will be rewarded. Caveat--I've only ordered delivery and have not had a chance to eat in the restaurant so I can't comment on service or ambiance. The food was delicious we had the Braised Pork Belly, Smoke Pork and Bean Curd and Squid in Black Bean Sauce. All the dishes were very flavor full the squid was a bit chewy so not the best. The Bean Curd was our favorite and the Pork Belly delicious too. I took a star off because of the squid as well as service was a bit slow. I think they were not ready for the rush. We waited 30 min on a Friday night at 7pm. There were large parties finishing up at that time but still a wait. We were only a table for two. The service staff was running around the best they could. There were only two people working to clean tables, take orders, brought out the food and payment. They could have easily used another waiter and a bus boy. Ordered takeout today and boy was I disappointed! I opted for the sweet and sour spareribs, not realizing that I would be getting small pieces of chopped up meat. The taste was very blend, and there was no sweet nor sour taste at all unfortunately, I spent a tremendous amount of time trying to remove the bones and fat from each piece. We were seated right in front of the bathroom and I can see people going in and out which is not ideal. The variety of foods are accommodating to both non spicy and spicy eater. The entrees were also delicious and flavorful. The Beef Brisket Rice Noodle dish was cooked to perfection. The brisket was tender and melted in your mouth. The broth was very tasty, not too spicy but with a bit of a tang to it. The noodles were the perfect compliment - soft and light. It wasn't a mess of noodles like you'd get in other places. The Cumin ribs were pretty bad. they were definitely pre cooked, then refried. just shoved a bunch of pepper , onion , etc on them. tough, dry, dry again. we should have said something, but I always feel like a restaurant should be able to tell when a dish doesn't look right, and you could tell these ribs were overcooked and dry just from a glance. read more

Very disappointed! I had high hopes for this place after reading the positive reviews. The foods were heavily seasoned. The beef noodle was SO salty. It's inedible. I had to send it back (and I never send food back!). The staff were nice about replacing it, but the second plate was still too salty. The shrimp dumplings were worse than those from the frozen section at the supermarket. The skin sticked to the bottom of the plate and came apart from the shrimp. Authentic and unrestrained Chinese spot... finally! Friendly and helpful service with tasty options. The noodles are their specialty but there's also various appetizers that are good. They even have stinky tofu! The restaurant is a bit tucked away and can be easily missed. The street entry is by the robotics school/store and down a long corridor. Not a big seating area but they seemed to do good takeout business. Slight quibble is that half the menu is priced at a premium for noodle store fare, but may be a function of rent/costs at its location. But overall a very nice addition to the area. read more
