I discovered Sofun because I was desperately craving stinky tofu, and there are maybe...6?...places in the Tri-State area that even serve it. Yes, I am one of those people who crave stinky tofu. Maybe it's my Taiwanese upbringing. Or maybe I was born with demented taste buds. I mean, who years for a dish that smells like the love child of gym socks and hot garbage? Me. I do. Anywho, Sofun was on our way to another spot, so we decided to stop by for lunch....and I couldn't believe how abso-effing authentic and delicious it was. - Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐): Not the full-blown, soft-stewed, CASSEROLE OF FUNK that I would've liked--but I rarely find that outside of Taiwan. This was the less stinky but still gorgeously pungent black, Hunan cousin. Crispy outside and soft inside, it was just fermented enough to make my organs shudder a bit but make my taste buds sing madrigals. - Beef & Pickled Pepper (泡椒牛肉): A stir-fry I rarely see and never believed I'd find in suburban NJ of all places. The sliced beef was perfectly cooked and accompanied by some of my favorite spicy pickled peppers and fresh peppercorn in an umami medley of spice that made us want to lick the plate. I kinda did... - Stir-Fried Spicy Cabbage (手撕包菜): A classic but a goodie. Nothing much to say but that it hit all the crunchy, garlicky notes we wanted. - Coconut Sesame Balls (椰蓉麻球): A spontaneous pick for something sweet. This was a nice twist on the classic black sesame-filled balls you usually see. Instead of that ebony paste, we bit into gobs of milky cream--and I was not mad about that. Sofun is our new go-to Sichuan restaurant in NJ! My husband and I LOVE Sichuan food and have been consistently disappointed with the Sichuan food in NJ. We usually have to venture all the way to Flushing to get our fix, but not anymore. We ordered one of our favorite dishes, fish fillet soup with pickled cabbage, and it was incredible. The broth was tasty and rich, the fish was tender, and the soup was loaded with noodles and veggies. We were so pleasantly surprised that they nailed one of our favorite dishes! We also decided to try the beef and pickled cabbage. The beef was so tender and flavorful. The dish also had a good beef/veggie ratio. The ambiance is also very nice and upscale. This was one of our first restaurant stops with our new baby, and we were seated in a nice, quiet corner. We came in here on a Saturday afternoon. It was busy but we got seated quickly. You can cab the menu using the QR code and then the waitress will take your order. The restaurant was clean and bright. Perfect for 2 people but they have booths as well for larger groups. We ordered the tofu and meat sauce rice noodle, stinky tofu, and the Berkshire pork and fried egg! It's been a while since I've been to an authentic Chinese restaurant in north Jersey! I came here on a Tuesday night, and there was no wait for a two-person table. The vibes were really cool; I loved the warm lighting and modern, cozy interior. We ordered the Beef Brisket Noodle and Ground Pork and Fried Egg Noodle, they were both amazing-- so flavorful and authentic! My beef was perfectly tender, and the spice was pretty mild. We also ordered the Tomato and Eggplant, holy sh*t it was so saucy and flavorful; it tasted just like how my dad would make it at home. I would definitely come here again. Some great Chinese food with stuff that's hard to find in America. I actually found this as a Google Ad when looking up food so it was rly just luck. When I saw they had stinky tofu I was immediately sold. Despite this, if you look up stinky tofu and you're not specifically next to summit or in summit you won't find it that way. Anyways, the stinky tofu was sooooo good. It tastes exactly like the ones in Changsha China, possibly even stinkier (a lot of the main stream places weren't that stinky :(). I was so surprised, it's faint but definitely closer to the taste of Taiwan's stinky tofu but with all the yummy sauces of Changsha stinky tofu. I've been on the hunt for truly stinky stinky tofu and this one hit the spot. It was so good I had to get a second one. The rice noodles were also good. The egg was very jammy. The soup dumplings were pretty yummy as well. The shop is also very cute, it reminds me of the mall restaurants in China. This place is so cute!! I would say the dishes they serve here are pretty authentic and I enjoyed all the apps I got, but was not blown away by the entrees. For apps, I tried the cucumber salad, popcorn chicken, and the pork soup dumplings. The popcorn chicken pieces could have been a little bigger. For my entree, I had the beef brisket noodle soup. This is one of their most popular items, but for me I felt like it was way too salty. My party also tried the mapo tofu which was a big hit and a great vegetarian option. Did not expect to find authentic Chinese food (with a slightly modern twist) in Summit. We came here for lunch and got a few dim sum dishes including pork soup dumplings, crab and pork soup dumplings, sticky rice with chicken, and black salted egg custard buns. Everything was delicious and prepared very well. Husband also got the spicy beef rice noodles. It was pretty spicy but that's the way he likes it. Keep in mind the portions are small. Soup dumplings typically come in 6 pieces. Here there are only 4. Service was friendly and accommodating. We asked to move to a better table and they obliged. Place is tucked away down a corridor. The food was delicious we had the Braised Pork Belly, Smoke Pork and Bean Curd and Squid in Black Bean Sauce. All the dishes were very flavor full the squid was a bit chewy so not the best. The Bean Curd was our favorite and the Pork Belly delicious too. I took a star off because of the squid as well as service was a bit slow. I think they were not ready for the rush. We waited 30 min on a Friday night at 7pm. There were large parties finishing up at that time but still a wait. We were only a table for two. The service staff was running around the best they could. There were only two people working to clean tables, take orders, brought out the food and payment. They could have easily used another waiter and a bus boy. I am happy they are doing well and will be going back. We plan on timing our visit better, either earlier or later. read more

Best Chinese food in Union County. Can't get any more authentic than this. You won't find things like General Tso's chicken here, but if you are willing to go outside your comfort zone, you will be rewarded. The restaurant is both clean and bright. If you have a large group, I would recommend call ahead as they have limited numbers of large table. We were seated right in front of the bathroom and I can see people going in and out which is not ideal. The variety of foods are accommodating to both non spicy and spicy eater. Very disappointed! I had high hopes for this place after reading the positive reviews. The foods were heavily seasoned. The beef noodle was SO salty. It's inedible. I had to send it back (and I never send food back!). The staff were nice about replacing it, but the second plate was still too salty. The shrimp dumplings were worse than those from the frozen section at the supermarket. The skin sticked to the bottom of the plate and came apart from the shrimp. They even have stinky tofu! The restaurant is a bit tucked away and can be easily missed. The street entry is by the robotics school/store and down a long corridor.
