My favorite work colleague and I came to Soi 38 for lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was my first time and I enjoyed the food, ambiance and service. Would definitely return with more work colleagues. The server recommended the summer roll with the rice vermicelli wrap. It was refreshing and yummy. Instead of the usual peanut sauce they offered a cilantro/basil spicy sauce for dipping. I ordered the Pad See Ew as I was in the mood for noodles. It was flavorful and tasty. We recently went here for dinner while visiting DC. The interior of the restaurant is really spacious. I also loved the decor. They do have outdoor seating if the weather is nice. The menu is pretty extensive and many of the main dishes had an option to make it vegetarian. All of our food was delicious. My only complaints are that the service was really slow. This was mostly because our server was also the bartender. Our drinks were also not spectacular. My boyfriend ordered a mule that was 2/3 ice. Wow I really don't think I'll find a better Thai spot than Soi 38 here in D.C. I've come here twice and really enjoyed both of my experiences here! First off, their Tom Yum soup is super on point. The ingredients, especially the shrimp, were fresh and the overall flavor of the soup was very balanced. I had this soup both hungover and not. When you're hungover, it will magically cure it and make your sorrows evaporate. When you're not hungover, be ready for your soul to melt. The Som Tum (Green Papaya Salad) is the most amazing som tum I've had in my life I've been on a mission to find good authentic som tum in D.C. and this really hit the spot. You know it's real when they have dried shrimp in it! The dried shrimp was chopped up, adding a nice texture to the salad, and the flavor had the perfect balance of fish sauce and lime, neither overpowering each other. My only complaint is that the portion is small for $8. It's already somewhat spicy but not authentic som tum spicy, so ask them to make it spicier if that's what you're looking for. The Ped Krob (crispy duck) was my favorite entree. I loved biting into it each time as it had a fun crispy crunchy yet soft texture. It was mildly spicy and the duck was juicy. Kuay Tiew Kee Mao (also known as drunken noodle or basil noodles) was a bit too salty for me but the seafood was super fresh. Overall mediocre dish but the seafood makes it. Khao Pad Sapparod (Pineapple Fried Rice) was just okay, very instagrammable if you're looking for a good photo. I've had better fried rice and for $18 the portions, and flavor was lacking a little too much for a decently simple dish. Pad See Ew (wide noodles with a sweet soysauce sauce) was good. I had no complaints. It wasn't anything special or different but this dish itself is difficult to mess up flavor-wise. Needless to say, the pad see ew delivered. Overall some of the dishes were somewhat disappointing, but the dishes that I did like overpowered my disappointment. read more

I've tried Soi 38 a number of times since it opened a couple of years ago. The first few experiences (shortly after they opened), I was not terribly impressed, especially among the plethora of other Thai options in DC. Pretty average food, service, and all around ambiance. With that said, I hadn't been until the last month when I went three separate times for work lunches and I was absolutely blown away! Everything seems to have gotten a facelift and the restaurant certainly has found its footing. The execution of "Thai street food" seems incredibly authentic and the presentation is beautiful (see pictures below)! The service was great- our appetizers came out within 5-10 minutes of placing our order and the kitchen timed our entrees perfectly, so we weren't swimming in food or dishes. The standout dish for me has been the Yum Goong Fu (pictured) which is a salad with fried shrimp, red onions, cashews, mango, and a tart and spicy dressing. Other notable dishes included the Ped Roti and Nam Prik Ong (pictured). The restaurant is a bit loud and seems a little chaotic during the lunch rush, but I don't mind the bustling energy, as it didn't disturb our lunch conversations or the quality of service. Each time I've gone in the last month, I've been more and more impressed and definitely recommend Soi 38 as a standout among the other Thai restaurant options in the area. Amazing place for dinner on L street. You can dress casual or formal but to me it calls for formal food; i only went cause I wanted Indian food and the place was in walking distance from the hotel. Any-who, shout out to the homie BC for meeting meeting on such short notice, we still had a good time. Gaeng Kiew Wan was my desired dish of the evening. Stewed chicken thighs in a green curry sauce with a side of that awesome sticky white rice. This dish was perfect the night because it was cold and raining out, so it warmed me up and cleared my sinuses a bit. Ordered the egg rolls to start, which had a really good sweet chili sauce (had a hint of mango) with a Tom Ka soup, which was actually very flavorful. However, for dinner I had the Panang curry, which I thought lacked taste and spice. For a staple Thai dish, I expected more from a nicer restaurant. On top of the decent food, the service was subpar, with no introduction from our waitress and from the host upon entering the restaurant. I came here upon a friend's suggestion, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance was classy and intimate, and the decor was really tasteful. I will say the hostess was a bit awkward when seating us, though. I ordered the Gaeng Hang Lay (slow-roasted pork belly in hang lay curry), and it was delicious! The pork was incredibly tender, and the curry had a mild, refreshing flavor. The sticky rice paired perfectly with the dish. Though I really enjoyed this plate of food, next time I think I might opt for something with a bit more of a kick, something with in-your-face flavor as that is usually what I am craving when it comes to Thai food. I will say, though, that the drink menu is what really blew me away at Soi. I tried the Emperor's punch, which we shared among friends (I would say that there is probably enough for 3 people), and it was a really solid punch. I also tried the Menehune's Painkiller, which was incredibly refreshing with bold, tropical flavors. Both drinks were also presented beautifully.
