Just had dinner there tonight and overall I would rate it as a C-. The Steamers appetizer was phenomenal. But it went downhill from there. Their "world class" Sangria was very weak, and I tried two drinks just to make sure I wasn't harshly reviewing it. No the 2nd drink was just as weak as the first. Had the Salmon and my wife had the Meatloaf. Both dishes were dry, hers overcooked and mine just very dry and bland. The asparagus looked like tree trunks and was not appealing at all. I did not try it but my wife did and said it was difficult to chew The desert i ordered was "supposedly" their signature dish - a Creme Bulee type dish. While it was indeed tasty, it wasn't what was printed on the desert menu. All in all, a very mediocre experience for what we thought would be an upscale restaurant. I visited Sol Grill twice during my stay in Newport Beach, and I would have gone more often if I could have. Sol offers a pretty good happy hour menu with meals around $12 and small plates ranging from $5 to $10. When you check in on Yelp, you get a free sangria that they make in-house. If I was a better poet, I would write a love poem for Sol Grill's bread. They make their own bread every evening and it is the freshest, softest, doughiest, crumbliest, best bread you will ever eat at a restaurant. It is evident that the chef takes great care in the food he serves: ingredients are fresh and flavors are powerful. I tried the lobster ravioli and the seared ahi plates: both were fantastic! Sol offers a fun ambiance. The regular hostess/server is also the owner (Misty). She is a great woman who offers quality service and conversation. One evening I sat at the bar and we chatted about the origins of Sol and the direction it is going in. It is nice to see small local restaurants see success. If I could give this Restaurant more than five stars I totally would. Tonight was my boyfriend and I's anniversary and I tried this morning to get a reservation. I wasn't sure what my work schedule would be so I didn't have much hope for a last minute reservation. I randomly thought I'd message them on social media (they weren't open yet) and very quickly I got a response. The women told me she would do her best to make it work and SHE DID! We got a reservation! I was beyond happy. I had followed them on social media for a while and clients of mine have raved about it. First we got sangria and I'm pretty sure we both sucked that down pretty fast because it was soo good. I'm a suckerrrrr for good seared ahi and let me tell you I could've eaten about 5 servings of that alone. We order the tuna and bruschetta as appetizers and they were both phenomenal. For entrees we order the filet with mashed potatoes and broccolini. Again PHENOMENAL. The steak was tender and cooked to perfection and the sides were just as mouth watering. We found our new spot and I can assure you I will be recommending all of my clients here. I am so beyond impressed with the SERVICE, FOOD, and PRICE! This place is the type of quiet and cozy restaurant that knows what they do well. The menu isn't extensive or experimental. There's a few types of pastas and a few types of meat and fish. I think my wife and I appreciate that approach. Everything we had was tasty and unfussy. We got an ahi chowder to share and I had the swordfish with a veggie and baked potato and she got the salmon with veggie and pasta. We split a bottle of wine we brought ($25 corkage fee) as well. Was referred to this place by a good friend and it was everything he said it was. We ordered four appetizers and four main course dishes and passed the items around the table, family style. Every single thing we ate was superb. Lobster ravioli, chicken piccata, and. lamb (a tad undercooked for one of us, but I thought it was on-point). Appetizers included mussels, bruschetta, meatballs (which were amazing) and seared ahi started us off. We stuck with a nice Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pinot noir, both were very nice. Service was pretty good, but I think they might have been a person short that evening, but even still, the young man who waited on his was very personable, professional and courteous. If I had to find an area that could be improved, perhaps the exterior styling of the building does nothing to hint at the superb food you'll enjoy inside. Perhaps that's a landlord thing, or local regulations (the building is probably 40 or 50 years old). It's not shabby or anything, it just isn't as fancy of other high end restaurants in the area - then again, the prices are more reasonable than other restaurants we've tried in the area - many of them were nowhere as good this establishment. Sol Grill is a real gem! I love supporting small, local businesses! The salmon entree is one of my favorite dishes, but my hubby loves their famous meatballs. Sometimes we will come just to sit at the bar, have appetizers and relax. You can be dressed up for a date night, or roll in wearing shorts and flip flops, and be right at home. Although our party enjoyed our meals, the general consensus revealed an overall lack of seasoning and depth of flavors. Another oversight was the absence of a ceiling fan/air circulation, inside the small, 5 table space. The spinning fans were reserved for the enclosed outdoor space. Sans AC/fan, the late afternoon sun baked us at our table adjacent to the large paned window. If I were to have an extended stay in this area, I'd be happy to return and try a few alternate dishes as well as the outstanding seared Ahi appetizer, at least one more time. read more

The ambiance of this place is so cute! We were here for a dinner with a few friends and they provided a private room! The food was INCREDIBLE. Filet mignon temp was exactly how I requested. Everyone was super happy with the meatballs and focaccia bread starters. I did take off one star because our server did not offer much knowledge on vegan options; we even called ahead to ask, and I was told that I can ask when we got there. The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice. We made an reservation but we came early so we sat at the bar until our table was ready. The space is a little awkward it's like you're walking into someone home with no hostess stand so you really don't know where to go. We were placed at a table right by the front door. So people had to squeeze past us just to get past( the entire meal). We should have just stayed at the bar. The food was okay. I ordered medium lamb chops they came to the table medium rare. It was so dark in the restaurant that I had to use my phone light to see it was rare. So I had to send them back to get cooked properly. I actually had to turn around and say that my lamb chops were probably done by now just so they wouldn't come back well done. The seasoning was minimal ( they didn't really have much taste) but the cut was excellent. I can't eat grain so the second time my lamb chops were sent to me they came on a bed of rice. The manager asked if it was okay and I just agreed so I can eat. Even though we all knew I couldn't have rice. The vegetables however were very fresh and crunchy. I don't know how to explain the level of recklessness displayed by this restaurant! Please note that this review is solely based on my initial contact and NOT on the cuisine,ambiance and waiter service! It is however based on initial contact with a person that may or not have been a waitress/maitre'd and safety measures observed. Wanted to sit down to eat and have drinks after our cruise in the Harbor. We wanted to support restaurants standing up for their rights during this tough time,as long as they took reasonable measures to keep their guest safe! We searched for restaurants doing outdoor dining and Sol Grill popped up! All the safety checks were marked off eg. Gloves,masks etc by staff. So we said why not! We arrive and we're greeted with a political sign outside that stated "A merry Christmas to everyone but Gavin Newsom" or close to it. I'm no fanboy of the governor and they're within their rights to express their frustration,but holy hell I wasn't expecting what cam next. I asked my wife to check if we needed a reservation. She came back 5 minutes later to say nobody acknowledged her and that I might have better luck. She then mentioned that nobody was wearing masks. So I got out,opened the door and stood there looking for assistance. One blonde behind the counter made eye contact printed a receipt and walked right by me! No smile,not a word spoken and zero acknowledgment! I though it was odd and started to get a bit irritated then I saw it! Staff didn't have gloves or masks! Chefs/ Cooks didn't have masks! No gloves either! Nothing! Then I realized they're packed and the "outdoor " dining was actually enclosed by clear plastic awning of some sort! And lastly everyone in there from the Bar to the dinning are were shoulder to shoulder! I took a deep breath,sighed and realized I wasn't going to be assisted so we left. We ended up eating at Sol (ironic) Mexican restaurant. Staff was friendly,wore mask and gloves and distanced customers to every other table!
