When we passed the Solvang Restaurant strolling the streets of Solvang, and I spotted the old-world European/ Danish decor inside and the long line of people in front ordering warm and fresh jam-covered aebleskivers, I knew I needed to experience it. In the interest of full disclosure here, I readily admit that I'm not immune to the lures of a gimmicky attraction. I figure there must be something cool to check out. Sometimes this philosophy serves me well, and sometimes it doesn't. In this instance, it definitely did. We arrived on MLK Jr Day for brunch, and it was moderately busy, but we were fortunate enough to be seated almost immediately. Solvang Restaurant is in many ways like a typical diner but with European decor and some Danish specialty menu items alongside a typical American diner menu. Because of my wedding diet, I just chose a regular two egg (poached) breakfast with hashbrowns, bacon, and no toast. The eggs were cooked perfectly (yay, poached eggs can be tricky), and the bacon was cooked to just the right amount of crispiness as well, but the hash browns were a little more al dente than I would've liked. My partner opted for the ham and cheese sandwich with french fries. He reported back that the sandwich was okay but nothing special. The aebleskivers were the star of the show -- do not miss out on these! They were warm and moist and covered in the most wonderful raspberry jam. The jam was not too sweet and thinner in consistency, and we all marveled at how it was the perfect complement to the aebleskiver. So yum and worth a minor detour from the wedding diet. As for the service, our server kept the coffee flowing, so no complaints there. The service is precisely what you'd expect at any busy cafe/diner. Overall, I'd say that it is absolutely with a visit here, but particularly for those moist, raspberry jam-covered aebleskivers. read more

Line out the door for the quick serve area where they sell the Danish pancakes (too hard to spell out here). Took about 25 minutes for me to get to order my Danish pancake but its made to order amnd fresh. Fresh is decliious ly soft and spongey from the window. I didn't order it a la mode with inc cream and I wish I did. On its own with the blueberry jam, its ok at best, but it would have made 80 degree weather much better with a scoop of ice cream. My first time in Solvang led me to the takeout window to try the famous Aebleskivers. For under $5 you get 3 of these spherical pancakes. They had a pancake-like exterior and a light, fluffy interior. They top these beauties with a delectable raspberry jam and a dust of powdered sugar. I got the jam on the side. The jam is the best I've ever had, however, I'm glad I got it on the side, because I enjoyed these more on their own. I love that there is a little takeout window, so you don't need to go inside the restaurant. They make these very quickly, so you won't have to wait long. I had high hopes for the Aebleskivers due to all of the hype. We had Dinner at Solvang Restaurant and it was like going to a bad Deli. The food was less than average, but not bad. The Aebleskivers arrived Hot with a Raspberry "Jam" that tasted like synthetic cough syrup. They both come with French fries. My wife and enjoyed her sandwich, not so me. This "patty" may have been 1/5 of a pound, and that's being very generous. The onions appeared to be momentarily slapped on the grill and were half raw. The fries were hot, but underdone and had absolutely no seasoning. Seemed like no one really cared that we were even though there. Their prices have gone up and the food quality has gone down. We come here every time we come to Solvang. Lovely cozy atmosphere and great diner-type food but slightly better quality. Our staples are the ebelskiver w/ raspberry sauce and Danish sausage platter. I only came here at Solvang Restaurant to buy their Aebleshiver. These circular shaped pancakes is what they are famous for besides their Danish foods served in their restaurant which I have not tried yet. I ordered the Aebleshiver from the outside window. The lady who took my order wasn't too smiley. Anyway, the order came with 3 of them covered with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. It was $4.90 which wasn't too bad. I should have gotten it with a la mode because the circular pancake was dense and slightly dry. It didn't have enough jam and powdered sugar either IMHO. Some ice cream would have softened it a bit. Maybe next time I'll dine in and try the a la mode version. This place is quite popular. Wait time may be very long so come early. It's one of the preferred places to eat while in Solvang. Anyways , the donut balls are doughy and dry and they are pretty greedy with the jam sauce so maybe I suggest you try it with the ice cream? Overall nothing outstanding or special. The food was CRAP. We ordered beef dip sandwich (my friend had 2 bites said she's had better at Arby's), the turkey cranberry croissant (the cranberry was this gross gelatin rigid slob that clearly came from a can), the abelskivers (the best thing we had but that's not saying a lot), and the side of sausage (cold, flavorless and inedible). Prices too much for this horrible quality of food!!! We left hungry and pissed off we spent $60 on that meal. Also sandwiches came first, then the abelskivers then the sausage...huh?! We thought it was undercooked and doughy. Well, we tried again...and requested that it be cooked longer. "Well-done" if you will. Unfortunately, that didn't help either. Positive: staff and split pea soup. Negative: the "Danish meatballs" or frikadellar tasted nothing like they should. Tough, hard, dense, and resembled meatloaf in whatever mixture they use. Sorry I think this is a tourist trap. Its in the downtown area in a street of many small shops and where majority of tourists are. Theres a little takeout window with only a bench outside. The aebleskivers are not freshly made but heated with a heat lamps. Ordering was quite fast and price wasn't bad. The only thing was when biting into it I expected something more eggy/fluffy/fresh and I ended up getting a pancake mix/flour taste. The raspberry sauce is slightly tart. Perhaps inside the restaurant is a different experience, though I found most of the towns pastries tasted more manufactured than freshly baked despite going around 12 on the weekend. read more
