Great place! Took my boyfriend and his sister for a 2-hour ride. Our group had 4 other riders and the guide, so not too big of a group which I appreciate. The horses seemed healthy and well-fed (with hay at $14/bale I was especially glad to not see a single skinny horse). They have horn bags for your camera and water bottle, which is a nice extra and they take your pictures (available for purchase) as you start the trail. The views were GORGEOUS and we even got to see some longhorn cattle resting at one of the peaks. Horses were well behaved and knew their job. I was at the end of the line, so I couldn't ever hear our guide, but that's ok. The trail was extremely rocky and rough. I'd never ridden in the Rocky Mountains before, so that could be the nature of the beast but it sure would be better if someone could clear the trail more. After the ride, we bought our pictures which turned out lovely and were provided in a nice folio. They were a little steep though at $10 a pop, I'd rather $5 and no fancy folder. When my parents visit, I'll definitely be taking them! Sidenote - Sombrero is VERY easy to access. Its an easy drive up from Boulder and as I had never been to Estes Park I was worried about what type of drive we were in for. Being in a low clearance, small car it was nice to have easy access to the ranch! read more

The scenery was outstanding, the horses were gentle and our trail guide, Zach, was a handsome young cowboy who represented the ranch with his skill and knowledge of the land. We booked the 2-hour horseback ride and it was fantastic. Everyone at the ranch was super friendly. It took a little longer than I thought it would to get the tour started, but they take the time to pair you up with the proper horse and go over everything you need to know with everyone individually. Our guide (Laurel) was super nice and very knowledgeable. We had 6 people in our group, which was great because I have seen places that book out too large of groups and it makes it rough for the guide to keep up with everyone and just makes for a less enjoyable experience in general. The tour is a great way to relax and see parts for RMNP / Estes that you wouldn't see just driving around. And you have the added perk of doing it all on horseback. They have locations in other parts of Colorado, so if you have the opportunity to ride through Sombrero, I would definitely recommend it. read more

We came to Estes Park for one day of our spring break trip. My sister and her family came with us and we decided to take our group of 4 kids ( ages 3-12) and 4 adults horseback riding. Shelley was our trail guide and she was awesome! She did an amazing job of engaging our whole group and making sure that everyone was comfortable the whole time. Our horses were awesome. We had Greaser, Tonto, Chico, Jerry, Wesson, Frost, and Gus. We did the one hour ride and that was perfect for the kids...I would like to do a longer ride another time. We had some nervous kiddos who had never ridden before and some adults who were unsure at first, but we would all do it again. We will absolutely be back again! read more

Riding with Sombrero Ranch was a pleasure. Being inside of the national park was amazing, the horses seemed happy and healthy, and everything was clean and well maintained. The employees were also very friendly and accommodating as well. One thing to keep in mind is that if you do a shorter ride (less than 3 hours) you probably won't get out of the woods, and therefore miss out on the views. I was hoping to ride in more open spaces, maybe a loop around the lake, etc and was a little disappointed to be in thick woods the majority of the time without much of a view of the park. I did the 3 hour ride, so I bet the 5 hour would really get to some great sights. read more

Just got off the trail from a one hour ride. The staff was friendly, knowledgable and the ride was affordable. The horses are extremely mild mannered, so great for kids. The pace is pretty slow. This was not a wild ride through the mountains but perfect for a family of four! read more

We went on a two hour ride with Faith. Our family of 5 had some riding experience, and all the horses were well suited for us. At one point, the horse my daughter was riding didn't want to go up a hill, and Faith took charge and took the lead and led her up the hill. She did a great job! The view was beautiful and our guide(wrangler) was very sweet and kept up the conversations of the history of the land and personal. Groupon purchase. I should know by now that is a red flag. Thought we booked for a private 2 hour tour, didn't know it was a group. But whatever. That was ok. The problems I had with this place were thus: The poor horses appeared to be in terrible shape. They were absolutely filthy. Mine, Prince, looked beat up and he had scars all over. I don't think his poor mane had been brushed in I don't know how long. All the horses were miserably trying to scratch themselves with their hooves and shaking their poor heads all about. The stables area is small with about 100 horses all packed in the area. I thought of calling animal services to go inspect the place. As for the tour, it was lovely up there along the mountain, but our guide sucked. She hardly said a word and had absolutely nothing interesting to say about Estes Park, no history, nothing. I don't like tour guides who ramble on and on, but a little history and information would have been nice. I asked what the population on Estes Park was and she just said "I have no idea." It was a long boring 2 hours. That is, except for the thunderstorm we walked through. Pouring rain, lightning and thunder. A little frightening and very cold as I was wearing shorts and short sleeves. Kind of cool though, actually. I did wonder their liability if someone got struck by lightning. We cut the tour short because of the weather. That was totally fine. I was actually very glad to get back. I personally would not recommend this outfit. read more

Was so happy they offered winter rides, I assume many of the places in Estes Park cater to summer tourism. I believe Sombrero has another location in RMNP, or close to it, so you can ride up there, but either way - this location has beautiful trails and the riding is good. As someone who grew up riding...and NO, not a few lessons making me an expert...my family was very involved in the riding clubs and I was sitting on horses as early as 3...learned how to clean, handle, tack and all else as early as 8-9...I digress...trail riding is not something that is appealing to a lot of people that have exp. because no one really wants to be told what you can and cant do, etc...this location is worth it, because unless you live out there, it scenery that is worth riding through...they don't force you to wear helmets...and it was really relaxed...it was my husband and myself only and we rode with Chloe...we stopped took pics of us, and was all-around good. The price was good in my book, maybe coming from NY I just ASSUME everything is expensive, because they kill us here, but it was $48 for a 1 hour ride and all in all a good deal. read more

This place has a terrible safety record, and I've seen a slice of it first-hand. My family had a serious accident while riding horses here, involving a concussion and internal bleeding. Other injuries, the worst being a broken back, were overheard in the hospital. Nobody received any calls or apologies from Sombrero Ranch, and they didn't offer us a refund (even after we requested one several times). On top of this, the ranch is guilty of horse negligence; workers are supposed to keep horses pinned up in a small area for most of the day, and this can cause reckless behavior. Horse owners aren't responsible for their horses' damage, unfortunately, so good luck trying to sue Sombrero. We won't be coming back to this demo derby, and if you make the mistake of riding here, be sure to ask for a helmet - you're gonna need it. read more

My bf has a bum knee and we really wanted to check out the Rockies and we both agreed that horseback riding would be a great option. I enjoyed this tour, but I wish our tour guide talked less about their personal life and more about the surroundings. Don't get me wrong, this person was very cool and did point out some natural features as we went along, but I wanted to know more about the geology of the park, any Native American history, etc. With that aside, the weather the day we went was gorgeous and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. read more

We had an amazing experience at the sombrero ranch today. We went on a 2hr. trail ride which was beautiful and informative. Our trail leader, Peach, was fabulous. She helped my daughter, 7yo, out of a tight spot with calm directions. We were riding with some inexperienced riders who did not feel anxious at all. The horses are fabulous. Perfect for their job. Instead of paying to feed there horses through the winter they send there horses directly to slaughter at the end of each busy season. They don't need to do this these animals are healthy and tame animals. They don't even try and find a rescue to place there horses. They send them directly to inhumane slaughter houses in Canada or Mexico . This is done to keep profits high. Consider supporting a ranch that does not follow this practice. They will never tell you the gentle loving horse you are riding will meet this terrible fate for absolutely no reason except profit. read more

if you're looking for a homophobic, offensive, rude, racist place to ride your horses, this is the place for you. our guide made several personal rude attacks to me and my friend. my friend and i love horses, our trip was tainted by our offensive guide and fellow riders. i'm visiting colorado for three days and was so excited and looking forward to this activity, but am completely offended at so many of the remarks he made. almost every comment was misogynistic, racist, or offensive to certain groups of people. my friend and i felt so uncomfortable because the everyone on our 2 and a half hour ride was hateful and judgmental. our guide made several comments about how he couldn't let a woman be better at something than him. ummm excuse me what generation am i in?! i loved the horse and it's a beautiful landscape but not enjoyable company. wouldn't go back and would not recommend to people who want to be surrounded by accepting, open, and loving minds. read more

When we first arrived, we checked in with no problem and then the ride began. We decided to go along with the 2 hour ride which had a very good view of Estes Park and the mountains. The guide was very nice and we had a nice conversation throughout the ride. The ride was a bit bumpy, but you can expect that when you are out riding horses. But what upset my group the most, was the fact that the ride was cut short by thirty minutes, and for $60 a person, you can get a much better ride elsewhere in Rocky Mountain National Park. read more

I visited my niece in Colorado and we signed up for the two hour ride. The ride was great, everyone was helpful and nice at the stables so overall, it was a great experience. However, I caution those who, like me, lost an item on the trail. My item was found and they called to tell me this. When I asked if I could pay to have them ship it, they said they can't take credit card over the phone. I then called back and asked if I could send a check. They told me they don't have staff that can go to the post office. (My niece lives 1-1/2 hours away and didn't know when she could get back there.) I then told them my niece can pick it up but probably not for a couple of months. They told me they can't guarantee that it would still be there. I asked them Why would it not be there if my name is on it? I was told "People rifle through lost and found all the time and I can't guarantee someone won't take it". I called the Estes Park Police Department who picked up my item and brought it to UPS. I only needed to call UPS with my credit card info. Shame on you, Sombrero Stables, that you cannot put someone's lost item aside until their family member can retrieve it. And double shame on you that you wouldn't send it yourself, knowing most people who visit are from out of town. read more

I have little experience riding horses. The guides pinpoint the horse that is suitable for your skill level. The guided hour tour was very beautiful. I was pretty nervous about the trail, but luckily one guide was breaking in a newer horse, so he stayed behind me the entire way. I felt like the guides gave great direction and warning when a steep spot was coming up. The horses know the trails, but it was still nice knowing what to expect. read more

I was a little sceptical when I saw the ride was on their property as really wanted to ride in the RMNP. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the trails and the amazing views. Went on a 1 hour long ride which was plenty of time. We also have a 4 year old who never rode before. The site did say they allowed double riders just had to pay full price for both. They seemed like they were not going to allow her to ride with someone. Which didn't make sense because she is not a big girl and her weight combined with her dads did not exceed the weight limit. They did let her ride with her dad. Thankfully so, because the way you have to lean forward/back going up and down the trail she wouldn't of been able to do that. The horses would also get close to the trees to where you had to push off. It would of been dangerous for her to ride alone. We had range of kids from 4-16 and we all had a blast. Highly recommend this place. Especially for first time riders. read more

My wife and I went on the 2 hour breakfast ride and had an absolute BLAST!! The ride was full of breathtaking scenery! Our Wrangler was very knowledgable about the ranch and Estes Park, even though it was her first summer working at the ranch. The ranch had over 100 horses and our Wrangler knew them all by name! The pancakes, sausage, and eggs were some of the best you can find anywhere. This was definitely the highlight of our time in Estes Park. Just returned from Estes, where I went for the 1 hour trail ride with my daughters, ages 4 & 6. The 4-yr-old rode double with me, and the 6-yr-old was able to ride her own horse. They chose our horses well, as both were very tame. The guides were funny and kept the ride entertaining, and the views were incredible! We had such a wonderful time at the Sombrero Ranch out of Allens Park in July! I was just looking back through pictures and remembering how much fun it was. My son has been living in Souel Korea and he brought his girlfriend home for a visit. She had never been on a horse and the crew took very good care of her (and all of us). Emmy was our guide and she was so sweet and informative about the ranch, horseback riding, and her personal story. What an amazing time my wife and I had on our honeymoon here with a 2 hour horse ride through the park. The staff was very knowledgeable and informative and taught us how to ride properly. Very surprised to read about people that experienced nothing short of a professional and enjoyable experience. If you or your family was injured because you opted out of wearing a helmet (you signed that you understood you were opting out) then the stables are not to blame for that. I opted out of wearing a helmet and had a great time without a sweaty head! We did the 3 hour trail ride at Glacier Creek and highly recommend that one because the views are very lovely. My sister in law and brother came from out of state and had a great time - my sister in law is an expert rider who owns her own horse. Our guide was funny and informative and thanked us for our attentiveness and care for the horses as their passengers. Will go on a different trail next time I have the opportunity! read more
