Hands down my favorite diner in this area. I've been coming here ever since I was an undergrad freshman at Rutgers and the experience has been pretty solid. We came for brunch on a Sunday and didn't have to wait for a table for 2, which was great. We ordered the Sir Girwain skillet, Oreo pancakes, and the red white and blue waffle. We decided to add sausage in our skillet and it was a great addition. It wasn't overly salty and the eggs were cooked perfectly to let the yolk run over the home fries. The Oreo pancakes were awesome - fluffy, light, and packed with chopped Oreos. The waffle was probably my least favorite. The blueberries looked like thawed frozen ones, which was really disappointing. The strawberries were fine, but the banana looked a little black. I think if the fruit on the waffle were of higher quality, it would have been easily a 5 star review. Overall, I will continue to come time and time again to Somerset Diner whenever I want some good diner food in the Rutgers area. It's also BYOB and they offer a student discount! read more

I hoped to come here today to enjoy a classic diner meal I had been so craving. Theres not too many 24hr diners left and had expected a little more from one of the very few that still remain. First and foremost, the appetizers were a complete let down. We had ordered hot buffalo tenders and potato skins. The buffalo tenders were an odd mystery meat and were soggy to say the least. If that wasnt microwaved chicken then it mustve been tofu. The potato skins had canned cheese sauce globbed on top to the point where it was completely unappetizing...and not to mention the bacon was UNDERNEATH the cheese. Who does that??? Weird. And lets not even get started on the entree. I had odered a cuban sandwich which came with "roast pork". I get my sandwich and its f*cking cold sliced pieces of pork chops. Felt like sand in my mouth it was so dry. My beautiful girlfriend ordered a dijon wrap and it came with NO DIJON. Cmon. And then the icing on the cake......a 60 dollar check. Very interesting little diner, I think the food was cheaper than usual diners so that was a plus but the food was good can't really complain but it won't blow your mind away. My favorite is the fries they are seasoned well so that's a nice plus. The server didn't brother us much but I wish we got more attention. This place is good if you want to go skiing. Everything here has gone down hill! Before the pandemic their prices were a touch higher than diners in the area but the quality made up for it. I went today for the first time in 2.5 years. They got rid of their lunch specials. They raised all their prices. I am ok with higher prices due to inflation, but higher prices with less quality is not ok. I was going to get a gyro but since we were the only ones there I didn't think it would be fresh. I got a simple Buffalo chicken sandwich. I got two (maybe less) chicken tenders cut up in small pieces and tossed in Buffalo sauce. I don't mind spending $15 for a sandwich but this was horrible. Popeyes gives you double the amount of chicken for $5. Plus popeyes is 10x better. It's sad because I used to love this place. read more

Just ordered from the Somerset Diner. We chose the diner instead of a chain so we could "shop local". Bad choice. We ordered a buttermilk crispy chicken sandwich for 11.45 and a cheese omelette with a side of pork roll $7.99 + $3.99. Because the order was to go, there was a packaging fee of $0.90 They neglected to put the taylor ham in the order even though we were charged. Didn't know till we got home and no way were we going back, the rest of the food would have been cold, not to mention the annoyance of driving back. The chicken in the sandwich was a joke - so thin it was impossible to even taste. Just awful. Our group of 12 people came at about 7 am and the diner was nearly empty. They were able to accommodate us by putting our group in a separate, hidden room with larger tables. I ordered the Tropical Waffle which included strawberries, bananas, and peaches. The strawberries were fresh and the waffle was satisfactory but the peaches were canned. My friend got the Western omelette and unfortunately thought that the omelette was unevenly salted and lacked fluffiness. Although the potatoes were crispy, she said they were bland and cold. My other friend got the Nova Scotia Benedict which looked particularly good. In her opinion, the eggs were cooked to perfection but the salmon was "a tad bit salty". There were large portions and she ended up taking her leftovers home. Overall, the food was ok, the servers were nice, the interior was well decorated, and there's even a 10% discount for Rutgers students! read more

I've been coming here for over 20 years, every visit has always been different. Some days the food is good, other days it's pathetic. It could all vary from what time or day you're there or what you ordered. If you're going to have a restaurant open 24 hours and offer such a large menu, it's important to work on consistency. If you come here for breakfast foods, it's pretty decent. It's hard to mess it up, but don't expect any wow factor. If you come here late night after a night of drinking or partying, this is probably the best. You know you'll just order the classic apps or disco fries. It's convenient because they're always open. The only thing I get here anymore is the club sandwich, pretty hard to mess that up. I only get it because it's what my mom used to get when we were little, so it's mostly a nostalgia factor. Again, the service isn't consistent. It's a gamble on what you'll get. Trust me, this is not the place you go to because you're craving it, you only come here because it's convenient. One day I'll get an amazing server and get food quickly, another day I'll get a chicken wrap with black lettuce inside. read more

I was very happy here. Our server Stephany was terrific even though the table was a challenge; people coming late and going early, special orders, separate checks, photographs, etc. We also lingered well after the we were done and never were rushed. I had a Cobb Salad for lunch and everything in it was delicious except maybe the avocado wasn't as tasty as the rest of the salad. Both the blue cheese and blue cheese dressing were outstanding. It was a nice sized portion. In fact, everyone's dishes or sandwiches seemed to be on the large side. We were originally scheduled to meet somewhere else but that place was closed due to a construction issue so we wound up here at the Somerset Diner. That worked out very well. read more

Two stars given because the place is a landmark and, because I only ate breakfast here. Problem is that everything ordered was average at best. Eggs, potatoes and toast with no zing. The bigger problem is they offer a sliced "steak" and eggs that is simply London broil and the cut was completely sub par. I tried two different slices and spent a good three minutes chewing it. It was inedible and I felt as though I would need to call in a friend to help me chew it. Wife ordered a very tasteless eggs Benedict ( I heard Benedict Arnold was a traitor, I assume he abandoned his country AND his flavor) Anyway, I think this area has other options for breakfast including college town in downtown New Brunswick and it's only a stones ( or London Broils) throw away so I suggest you burn the time and gas to find a better place read more

Quite Disappointed in the young lady at the counter... We ordered food online online my husband went in to pick it up, Checked the order b4 we left the lot. Noticed we were missing our lox platter. He went back in and was told by the rude ,nasty, & dismissive young lady that there was no lox. And we were reimbursed the cost of the item * Basically we should be happy that we were reimbursed $13 given a $1.50 bagel with 2 pats of cream cheese..* The manager however was gracious enough to refund our meal and we really appreciate it However, it just takes one lack luster experience from a rude employee to deter people from coming back to any establishment. And unfortunately this young lady was the epitome of someone who has no interest in working. I was watching through the windows. So I did see what was going on, props to the manager who stepped in.. but your employee stinks. I can't believe we were given such a dismissive response from face of your establishment who apparently is very laxed and doesn't for someone else's business. We did like to come there and have visited several times however, due to this last experience it will be the last time . if we can't get breakfast order right nor can we contacted if there is an issue why would we go back? Our server was amazing, very sweet, accommodating, and kind. Ordered the Tuscany omelet and the sun dried tomoates in it tasted very very bad, like old. We told our server and he grabbed the manager to help us. She walked over, already seemingly with a very bad attitude. I hate having to send food back and I felt bad, but my friend told me to just order something else , no big deal. Manager came over and gives us major attitude, while my friend was telling the manager what didn't taste good and that she was just gonna order something else. I have been going to this place for years now, and it gets worse and worse. We went here last Monday after my girl got home from work around 930pm. She was starving and had nothing to eat all day. She wanted something quick and so we decided to go to Somerset Diner. The moment we walked in they ran to us and sat us. I was like, wow service is gonna be quick here, I hope they give us time to look through the YELLOW BOOK THICKNESS menu. I rushed and decided to get french toast sticks, my girl was going to order some type of omelettes. 5 minutes passes, as well as 3 waitresses. Not even a look towards our table. I said "ok kool ill look thru my menus again", 5 minutes later same thing...waiters was just standing around looking at us. Now, im losing my patience. What the hell is going on here. Not even a little acknowledgment saying "we will be right there"...After 15 minutes of waiting around and seeing other people being sat after us and then getting their food before us, made me almost lose it! If it wasnt for my girl calming me down, I woulve made an F'in scene of this place. What BS I tell you! What happened to this place. Im not going back here again. I came back here and had a Southwest wrap. It contained grilled chicken, chipotle, cheese, bacon, and a side of Ranch dressing. There was also French fries and coleslaw. The wrap was alright. I called and asked what soups they had, the lady on the phone told me ans I asked nicely to just give me a second I had to make sure which soup my elderly grandfather wanted. When I went to tell her we wanted chicken noodle soup, she hung up on me. I called right back and asked I think you just hung up the phone with me but I would like a large chicken noodle soup. She didn't say anything just ok and hung up again. My boyfriend went inside to get the soup and the whole story changed. A man now was saying oh we just called and asked what soups they had and never placed the order. Furious at this point because it took about 15 minutes to just to give us soup, we got it and it's freezing. This is ridiculous! You cannot tell me the woman on the phone was so busy that she couldn't place me on hold instead hung up on me and when I called back two seconds later she answered again... check who you have answering the phone. Food was horrible. Service was great. Everyone was friendly and welcoming and there was a Rutgers student discount. We ordered quesidillas and the arichoke and chips dip upon the waitress recommendation. She said these options were a few of the popular ones in the diner. The food took some time to come out. Upon arrival, we were quite disappointed as the prepartion didnt seem fit. The aritchoke dip tasted way too strong and there were chunks of the atichoke still present. The chips were covered in different vegetables and cheese which made them soggy and bad to taste. The cheese tasted like plastic. the waitress was nice enough to take it off our bill because of the disatisfaction. the quesidillas were alright. DO NOT order the vegetable quesidillas. It comes out very soggy and hard to eat. The best part of our meal was definetly the chesse quesidillas because you cant screw that one up. I have been going to this diner since I was a kid. I especially enjoy it for breakfast / brunch. It is my favorite spot to go to for that meal in Franklin Township. The Somerset Dîner is my staple. For this brunch experience I ordered the Bronx Tale Omelette with egg whites. It was a hearty serving size, which was good because I wasn't going to be eating again in a while. I thought the filling went together great. I realized; however, that I probably wanted are stronger cheese than mozzarella, but I take that as a lesson learned. My boyfriend and I have been dying to try this diner because it's so close to our school. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. Our waitress was nice and came by frequently to check on us. Made some small talk as well. The food is really good. We both got breakfast skillets: his was a chicken one and mine was called Sir Lancealot. The chicken on his plate was cooked really well and I enjoyed my dish. It was a good portion for a relatively cheap price. I ended up taking half my skillet home because I was so full. Both of our dishes came with a side of bread and butter. The bread is as good as bread can get. Place seems a bit dim to me, but I don't have a big problem with it. I like that the diner has more of an original feel as opposed to some of the other diners I've been to. Will go here again for sure. read more

The Somerset Diner is only a 10-minute drive from the College Avenue campus of Rutgers-New Brunswick and the perfect dining atmosphere to have a sit-down meal with your friends with its comfortable booths and various special sitting arrangements. That's exactly what I did and of course it was on a Friday when I had nothing due and was able to sleep in before lunchtime was over. My friends and I were able to get a table right as we walked in. Like most diners, the service was helpful, cheerful, and quick. Food and drink wise, I started off by ordering a coffee. I had a total of two cups and never had to worry about getting my waitress over for more as she always came around with a pot in her hand. I didn't have to worry about cream and sugar as that was already on the table before my arrival. I ordered a country wrap with egg whites, cheese, ham, and potatoes with a side of home fries. The wrap was cooked on the group just perfectly so that it left grill marks on the bottom. The cheese was melted and deliciously gooey and was a nice mixture with the other fixings in the wrap. The side of home fries complemented the wrap very nicely with its softness and flakiness. If you're a pancake person, those are good too! I took a little bit of my friend's Oreo pancakes and added some sugar to my taste buds that were already salty from the scrumptious ham in my wrap. One of the best parts of the diner, I would say, is that Rutgers students get 10% of their check if they show the cashier their ID. The shrimp (three large shrimp) combo came with a stuffed shell (delicious) French fries and a mushroom topped with a cream spinach (delicious). We can't wait to return to try other food. items.. An initial reaction upon arrival at this diner would be a welcoming staff, scrumptious diner food, and an understanding connection between the customer and restaurant. However, the experience was greeted with condescending tone, unpredictable attitude, and an egotistic conversationalist tone. Our party ordered the Super Sampler, consisting of potato skins, mozzarella sticks, and nachos with guacamole, sour cream, and tomato as stated in the menu. With only the knowledge provided by the menu, we confidently ordered our food, with our waiter knowledgeable that our party are all vegetarians. When we received our food, the nachos were served with beef chili, an additional topping beyond the scope of the menu listing. We kindly asked our waiter if we could get this item without beef as listed in the menu. The manager, angered and defying customer service etiquette, approached our table in a malicious tone stating "So whats happening". Our party calmly replied saying "We are all vegetarians and were unaware about the beef chili as it was not mention in the menu description". The manager snarly uttered "Nachos usually come with beef chili" as if the fundamental theory of nachos states that nachos are always served with beef chili and anything else is atypical. When mentioning this was not stated on the menu, our statements were not interpreted and processed as statements by the manager. The manager immediately barked "I am not arguing with you about this". I was unaware having a conversation to clear a misunderstanding correlated to an immediate argument. The exuberant diner light was dimmed and slowly extinguished after this encounter. The food also wasn't the best. Surely don't come here if you're full of flavor and know how to spice your food. Overall, a restaurant that will not receive my money nor a second visit. I believe the rule is to stick to the basics when ordering food at a diner, but I couldn't tell that to my growling stomach. I decided to try the stuffed (with mozzarella cheese and sun-dried tomatoes) Chicken Marsala served with rice, and I'm so glad I did. It was really good! The chicken was tender and the sun-dried tomatoes were a nice touch. I took most of it home however, since the quesadilla appetizer was so filling. They were super thick, filled with chicken, and served with sides of guacamole, jalapeños, sour cream, and salsa. I may have missed something. Anyway, the food was good and the server was attentive.
