Consistent food and service. This is a super casual sushi spot that gets really busy - or it did when the dining room was open - not sure about now since it's takeout only. I like the miso ramen with added veggies. They have all the typical sushi/shashimi and Japanese entree and appetizer dishes but nothing hibachi style like fried rice. We LOVE this low key sushi spot. It's located in a shopping center in Matthews and not too far away from where we live. We have been here about 4 times now and every time it was great service and excellent food. You can't go wrong with any appetizer, my favorite is the Ebi Shumai. Our family went tonight and this place is definitely a hidden gem. We all loved what we ordered and the freshness and quality reminded us of another small, local place that is about 15 minutes away. This place is a lot closer to us and the service was even better! We loved how it's small inside and everything was very clean. Our sushi orders came out on our own plates so we didn't have to remember which rolls were ours and our waiter remembered who to give the orders too. We will definitely make this our regular sushi place. I almost hesitated sharing this so it stays a secret, but this place deserves the business. Way to go! read more

I really, really enjoyed this place. This is my favorite kind of place which is hidden gem in a shopping center. The sashimi was excellent and every sauce was perfect. Their hot chili oil paste was one of the best I ever had. They have great spices on the table to add to the soup, too. I had a salmon cream cheese roll and it was great. Also, the sashimi/sushi combo was great. Miso soup was average but the ginger salad dressing was fantastic. My friend had three rolls that were absolutely it sky delicious, too. I think it is safe to say that my fiance and I have now made Somi Sushi our official sushi place after moving to south Charlotte. We've ordered from there a couple of times and the sushi has been fantastic with each experience. We've made to-go orders so they have neatly boxed up all the rolls and they have been perfect when getting back to our house. The dynamite roll and the surf and turf are my favorite. 1) because of the flavor, 2) because of the texture differences. One thing I don't really think about that much is tempura fried vegetables. Somi does them SO WELL that they are 100% worth a sider order and then they are just a bonus if you order a bento box. The sauce they serve with the tempura and their gyoza is delicious. Also, the gyoza is top notch. I've been kind of "meh" on the bento box, but I have only tried the teriyaki steak so far, so might give another meat a try next time. But the bento box comes with a ton of food and is also very neatly packaged for you when you order take out. All in all, this is such a solid spot and I'd definitely recommend it for sushi! read more

My husband and I decided to go here on Christmas eve. There were only 2 other groups there so we were seated very quickly. It's a small place, maybe 12 tables, so it probably gets full on normal days, but they do take reservations. Our server was kind and attentive. We ordered the gyoza appetizer, which was very good. We also ordered 5 specialty rolls and all of them were DELICIOUS! Usually when we get sushi there will be one or 2 rolls we arent crazy about but this time we were happy with our entire order. Everyone that worked there was so friendly. They also have killer drink specials. We were there on a Tuesday so it was $2 domestic bottles, which I wasnt into but the other drink specials throughout the week sounded great. Happy we went here. Will be back for sure! read more

Wow. We got the salmon and flounder course for 2 (from the Korean menu). It's $45 but we got a lot of food. The sashimi / raw fish is fresh and soft. The salmon shashimi was buttery and melted in my mouth. The course also included appetizers like edamame, shrimp tempura, a California roll and 2 miso soups. I decided to stop by here on a Friday night and I was surprised that it was not busy at all and It is a very small restaurant but don't be fooled, the menu is extensive and did not disappoint at all. We ordered a Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box which came with a choice of sushi (we chose spicy tuna), vegetable tempura, miso soup, and seaweed. The Bento Box definitely fills you up but is a bit pricy at $17. It is still worth the price if you're hungry because it comes with a lot more than usual bento boxes + you get way more of a variety of entrees to choose from. It also comes with way more sushi than most bento boxes. We also ordered the tonkotsu ramen and katsudon. Both were very good but I've had better at other Japanese restaurants in Charlotte. However both were still very flavorful and tasty. The only main flaw in the Tonkotsu was that the soup base was not as flavorful as usual Tonkotsu ramens I've had. Even though I've had better for both, I'd come back for Somi Sushi's ramen and katsudon just because it was still very good. The service was also quick and our waitress seemed very hardworking and friendly. I'm definitely coming back to try more menu items especially their sushi menu that looked very extensive and delicious. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us by fellow recent transplants from South Florida, and I'm going to have to bake them a cake or something to properly thank them - that's how wonderful it is. Since moving here, we've been on a mission to find good food. And, frankly Charlotte, you have been far more disappointing than I ever imagined any place could be. The Uptown restaurants have an air of high quality and downright snobbery, but I haven't had a wonderful meal there yet. However, this little sushi place in a strip mall in Matthews is quietly delivering - and I do not say this lightly - the BEST sushi and Japanese food I've ever had. Oh, and my son just got back from Japan (Fukuoka and Tokyo), and save one sushi place in Fukuoka, he agrees. We highly recommend the fun and delicious Takoyaki - a sort of fritter with minced octopus in a creamy center. The fun part is the "dancing benito flakes" that move when heated. Next up, we had bento boxes, which include a wide range of choices! I chose tonkatsu ramen and a tempura shrimp roll. It came with a green salad with a creamy ginger dressing (delicious and refreshing), perfectly fried tempura veggies, small seaweed/squid/pickled veggie condiments, and ponzu sauce. The ramen was overflowing with a rich broth, gently bathing sliced pork belly, soft boiled egg, and the eggiest tasting noodles I've ever had - it was delectable and very filling. My companion chose the sushi combination and a spicy tuna roll. His box included the same "extras" that mine did, with the addition of miso soup (since soup was part of my order). The 7 assorted nigiri included extremely fresh fish choices, with only a small amount of rice bed to lay on - perfect. The ginger salad is probably one of the best I've tasted so far in a restaurant in Charlotte, the greens were crispy and was not sitting in a bed of water like I've experienced at other establishments and the dressing was light but refreshing. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen and my partner ordered the Chicken Katsu. The ramen had a salted egg that was a surprise as most ramen shops in the area just hadd either a hard boiled or soft boiled egg. The broth was creamy, perfect for a cold day. The chasu that also came with it had a nice char and was fatty which I like. Overall, I really recommend this place, possibly the most authentic Japanese restaurant that I've been in. read more

The service was attentive and prompt and nothing too overbearing. Now let's talk about the food, we got the squid karage and I would definitely reccomend that. The squid is fried tempura style then served with lemons too add a bit of freshness with every bite, the squid was cooked to perfection which is a great sign since overcooked squid Is pretty common place and more often than not overlooked. the hamachi kama was also a great addition, and provided an izakaya approach on yellowtail, but what really sold me on this was the ponzu sauce that was served on the side. It was an amazing complement to the grilled fish. Now the sushi, I can firmly state that the quality of both the nigiri and sashimi can stand toe to toe with any high end sushi establishment in the heart of uptown, the portions are generous and the quality is there with every single bite. The rolls are also very creative and provide great value. The diamond roll and somi roll definitely earned the title of a specialty roll and will definitely come back and venture into the Menu in the future They also have Japanese ramen, curry, and other izakaya style plates without the hefty price tag and will definitely come back for those as well! read more

Disappointing. After all the reviews and supposedly one of the best in Charlotte, we left very dissatisfied. Service was overall good, although we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. Quality of the sushi was fair. I've had better. For me, one of the plates we ordered had seaweed wrapped around the rice, as usual. However, the seaweed was chewy and not even edible. I was literally dissecting the sushi and removing the seaweed. The server came by and asked how everything was and I told her plainly "not good, I cannot eat this". I heard her tell the chef and nothing happened after that. No acknowledgement from either the server or chef or adjustment to our bill or offer to get something else. Other items we had like edamame and Spring rolls were good, as well as a different sushi plate we had ordered. We will not repeat. read more

I live across the street from Somi Sushi and we have ordered takeout several times over the past month. Just before the closures, we at in and it is a fairly nice atmosphere. I'm not a sushi connoisseur, but we regularly get the bento box. It has generous portions and is very tasty. Order an extra side, like the spring rolls, and one box is plenty for two. The business is a small building but we have never had to wait to be seated . I've had traditional sushi at a couple of restaurants and was never a fan, but gave this place a shot , you see all the ingredients right there in front of you and it's all so fresh, definitely worth the trip.
