SomiSomi has always been a fan favorite for me and my partner! We used to go to the Arcadia location when it was open at the Santa Anita mall which is much closer to us, but ever since it closed, we still love making a trip out the Fullerton location. We love this ice cream chain because it has different swirls every week and it's always fun to see what they have every time we arrive. The staff is also super friendly and patient. When we arrived, there were so many customers, but the line got through very quickly. My partner and I particularly love somi somi because of the taiyaki combination you can get, but you can also opt out of it if you're just feeling the ice cream alone. It's very customizable! This is just a side story, but somi somi was also one of our first date spots for my partner and I. I introduced him to somi somi and we went to the location near Anaheim. I can't remember which city it was in, but somi somi is very reminiscent for the both of us. Was craving ice cream so decided to make a stop for some girl dinner! :) We found some street parking nearby and walked in to a little line, but it moved pretty quick. Inside looked clean, they had counters for you to eat inside but no seating. They had a new menu item: real strawberry milk but unfortunately were out of stock. I asked the cashier for flavor recommendations and she did not recommend the corn flavor I was going to try. We opted for the Ube Cookies & Cream swirl in a cup and the Milk flavor with the Taiyaki filled with Nutella. Pricing was not bad for a scoop $4.50 and cost $6.95 with the Taiyaki. The taiyaki came out warm with a filling of your choice: custard, matcha custard, red bean, black sesame, or nutella. We chose the Nutella inside and it was pretty good! However, I would probably order the taiyaki separately since I loveee filling and the taiyaki on the icecream seemed to have less filling in order to fit on top. You can also choose toppings when you pick up your order: sprinkles, biscoff crumble, captain crunch, coconut flakes, matcha powder, graham crackers. You can also select 1 extra topping: - 1 strawberry (half a slice) OR - 1 mini macaron (only the top cracker part) I would opt out of the sour strawberry and dry macaron, but it definitely looks like a cute addition. Our ice creams came out not that aesthetically-looking as we ordered them in the Irvine location and they looked better. The Ube taste was indeed "not that sweet" , but was missing something creamier. I couldn't really taste the cookies and cream flavor. The milk flavor was also very light in flavor and tasted like whole milk. As a creamier gal, I would probably come back for their taiyakis if nearby, but not their icecream. We love going to somisomi, the soft serve is so yummy & the cutie fish taiyaki is made fresh every time we go. They have a variety of flavors, a few that rotate & toppings as well. They also have different options as far as filling the taiyaki such as Nutella, custard, matcha & even a savory cheddar. The possibilities are endless as far as flavor combinations & the presentation is always picture worthy. This spot is located in DTF, there are a few lots nearby & it's in a cute plaza. Service is good, but they do not do samples. I would understand if it was a traditional ice cream place, if it was just vanilla, chocolate etc. but they do have flavors that you may not know if you would enjoy or not. We stopped in to try the banana milk & possibly the Ube but we weren't sure if we would like the flavors. Unfortunately since we weren't able to try the flavors we were hesitant & ended up leaving & going to Blue Scoop in Brea. Located in downtown fullerton this is a good dessert spot. We parked on the street and walked over. The inside is spacious enough but no seating just standing bars. Outside there are a few tables. We ordered soft serve in a cup and one with their taiyaki. When I first got mine I thought the forgot the filling but when I asked they told me it's just a very thin inside layer, so don't expect it to be filled filled with nutella, custard, etc -- just lightly coated. This was a perfect spot for desert! I've never had desert here. It was even probably my first time getting ice cream inside taiyaki. What a great combination! My order during this visit was the matcha flavored ice cream with matching filling inside of it. The price for one of these isn't that expensive or cheap. It was fairly priced, but they don't charge for the filling inside or toppings. However, I did not request any toppings just to avoid it getting messy. So I have to say, I was pleased with what I received. The workers did a good job preparing the ice cream quickly. They waste no time. parking was a mess in this area (fullerton), good luck store was not busy the staff felt rushed like there were 50 customers waiting in line, but it was only my fiancé and I, what's the rush? please take care of the customers requested for fresh hot extra crispy fish, female cashier was not confident and gave a delayed response, "yes". after paying, instantly, received our order. the fish was not fresh, it was cold and not up to par like garden grove or irvine locations. the staff here needs to be retrained to make great products fresh for customers, not make a bundle cold sitting out, please refer to the pictures. definitely, do not recommend this location. anything that comes out instantly after you have paid for an order does not sound right. thats exactly what I received, a cold fish with no warmth crunch texture with the custard. it did not live up to par. service needs to improve and care about the quality of the food product served to customers. there were too much pre made fish that were sitting out cold. suggestion: for great freshness and quality, make per order and you'll definitely do better as a business and quality or quantity. more customers will be back with positive reviews. read more

SomiSomi is a great option for dessert if you want a cold treat during the summertime. I love trying to see what combination of soft serve I can get with their ube. You can also get free toppings from the servers! Just be careful of the ahboong fish waffle cone. It's a soft waffle instead of the hard cones you get at usual ice cream stores so it really starts to fall apart when your ice cream melts. The interior is nice, but there was no seating inside, just outside of the store. read more

This is my second time at this SomiSomi location and both times have been really wonderful! I really like that they offer plain taiyaki here because I'm not always a fan of fillings. They're delicious, but sometimes I just crave some mochi bread! The area is clean, albeit a little warm. There are no chairs available inside, but outside there are a few seating areas scattered here and there in the plaza. The food & taiyaki is made to order so sometimes if there's a long line, it'll be on the longer side of waiting, but I didn't mind! Parking in this area is almost atrocious, depending on what time you show up LOL. There are plenty of places to park, but sometimes they take a fee. Otherwise, you can try to go for street parking, but this area is a college town, so I don't know how it'll look during the day time. read more

I love how fun this place is. You can watch them make the little Taiyaki fishes. My son loved the ice cream with Taiyaki fish on top. He said it tasted delicious and was happy he could choose all the toppings he wanted. I also ordered the 5 Taiyaki fishes for almost $9.00. Everything was great and crunchy. I ordered a black sesame, 2 cheese, and an Oreo. I am more of a mozzarella person so I was surprised there was cheddar squares melted inside. The only thing I did not like was the black sesame, the outside was great but a big ball of black sesame filling was in the center instead of spread throughout .. like a lot. Frequently drive past this Somi Somi but never thought to stop by until a recent Friday evening for a post dinner treat. Parking is a nightmare - all Downtown Fullerton shoppes share multiple parking lots but they fill up very quick during peak days/times along with the street parking. After circling a few times, we parked at a bank lot which charges a fee to park. Surprised to see Somi Somi completely empty when I walked in. Unfortunately, no more samples are provided. I opted for the 2 pieces of taiyaki (red bean & custard) and a cup of cookies & cream soft serve with a strawberry top. Once I ordered, a staff member made the soft serve right away and popped the batter for the taiyaki. I wish they would've asked if I wanted to wait to get it all at once since I was ordering take out. The soft serve had melted a bit by the time I received the taiyaki and headed back to the car. There aren't many flavors to choose from but some flavors are on rotation. I won't go further as their menu shows everything. The location itself is on the side of the street with no parking, so you'll have to park a ways down and walk which I did not mind as it only made the experience more comforting, especially with it being at night. But do be prepared if you cannot find parking that is close. I only had to wait about 3-5 minutes before my order was ready and the staff was friendly with a positive attitude. I was impressed as they were pumping out orders during a rush; all without sacrificing quality. I ordered the Cold Brew Float with milk & coffee soft serve in it. When I first received my drink I didn't mix it so I ended up taking a sip of black coffee which I'm not a fan of. After mixing in the ice cream, I experienced a sweet delight between roasted coffee and a mellow milk flavor that closely resembled vanilla ice cream. The drink itself is great and after a little while, it became almost like a slush which I am a fan of. Overall, a great little spot with a modern interior design. Get to the cashier and he tells me they aren't serving taiyaki because they don't have enough people...... What poor customer service. You need to communicate to your customers, especially if there is a long line like that! I get it if you're short staffed and have to make that decision. Put signs on the door or at least call out into the crowd to announce the limited menu every time someone comes in the door. While we were eating another employee making the ahboongs was banging the machine violently trying to loosen the ahboongs, her coworker came out of the back to ask if she was ok, not ok, that's probably a $1000 machine! In the handful of times I've been, I usually opt for the upside down ah-boong: your choice of creamy soft serve topped with a fish-shaped waffle that is filled with a filling of your choice! My go to is ube soft serve and a Nutella filled taiyaki! My most recent visit, I opted for 2 taiyakis ($4.50), one filled with taro and one filled with Nutella. These were perfection. Crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. While both fillings were tasty, the Nutella will always win my heart. Next time, I'm going to try a taiyaki with an Oreo filling! There was literally crumbs and scraps and pieces of baked goods everywhere. I even watched the girl (who was making some of the items) pick pieces off and throw them behind the machines. I guess it would be different if there wasn't clear glass? It was very aesthetically unpleasing. It doesn't look like anyone had wiped down any surface for hours. The grossest part was when I went to pick up my ice cream, the counter was so dirty with crumbs and ice cream (and who knows what else) it got all over the side of my hand when I was picking up my cup. Also, although the ice cream did still taste great, it was very melted tonight, not sure what that was about? Seems like some conversations need to be had not only about the condition and filth of this place, but the impression that it leaves when someone is standing in line and looking at your surfaces completely covered in crumbs and scraps and who knows what else. It's pure laziness on their part. The could've wiped their surface area clean in probably about 5 minutes, but the fact that they didn't is a little concerning.
