So this place is fairly new in Fullerton. I've always seen the ice cream in the fish but never saw any near me. So the other night I was craving something sweet and decided to stop by and check it out. The customer service was great, it was our first time and they were super helpful. They explained how it worked and about the different flavors of ice cream and fillings and you can even add toppings at the end!! We've been coming here since the pandy days since we used to live at Malden Station by Windsor. Loved walking this neighborhood and slipping into this place to enjoy some Korean style soft serve after having some Italian or some other place we were craving. After a heavy BBQ dinner, we wanted to come and get some dessert. Never had Taiyaki and ice cream, so we decided to come and give Somisomi a try. This place was packed with people everywhere!! From kids and their parents to teenagers to adults, this is a treat for all ages. The smell of cooking waffles is definitely in the air. With the thick smell of chocolate and other sugary smells as well. It's very bright in here. You can see them cooking the taiyaki, as well as a bunch of taiyakis cooling by a fan as well as the ice cream maker and the toppings area. They have a pretty good assembly line, thus making the line and waiting for the finished product go by pretty quickly. I ordered their combo ice cream swirl of matcha and ube. With a taiyaki on top with custard inside and sprinkles and coconut flakes on top. The taiyaki on top was really good. Flaky and warm but still pillowy and soft inside. The custard added a sweetness that was subtle and not overpowering. The ice cream was also subtle in flavors. A little bitter from the matcha but some sweetness from the ube. Not to mention how pretty the presentation is!! The detail on the taiyaki was amazing!! You can see the fish scales, the fins, the eyes, the mouth, and the gills. Making it look as realistic as a fish waffle can be. You can order the Taiyaki by itself, which is a whole waffle fish enclosed with your choice of topping inside, takes about 15 min to make. Or you can have half a taiyaki (no eyes or lips, it's more of a half fish, see pictures) and ice cream which as I said comes out rather quickly. There are some long thin, high-top bar type tables you can stand at to enjoy your dessert. Which is actually quite nice too. Because you can people watch, eavesdrop into peoples' conversations as well as engage in your own conversations. And it also prevents you from eating ice cream outside in the cold!! I like the classics - so I got a vanilla soft serve with Nutella filling and a strawberry garnish. The soft serve is good and so rich - it almost reminds me of a frozen custard. My only critique of this SomiSomi, in particular, is that the waffle cones were sitting out so they were not as delicious as they would have been if they were fresh and crispy. I was in the area and decided to visit this shop for some filled taiyaki. Parking was a bit tricky as I was unfamiliar with the area but after circling around a bit I realized there is a parking structure behind this shop as well as some street parking. The women working here were very nice and welcoming. I ordered two taiyaki - one custard filled and the other Nutella filled. They make them to order so it took about five minutes. I stood and intensely stared at the large waffle cooker but it didn't make it go any quicker. There are a few tables inside and a couple patio areas but I took them to-go. It's best to eat taiyaki immediately so the fish-imprinted waffle stays crisp. Not wanting to risk them getting soggy I ate them in the car. The waffle on each was crisp outside and soft toward the interior. Both fillings were delicious. The Nutella one was plump with filling while the custard one could have used a bit more. If so desired, you can also get soft serve ice cream in your taiyaki. They have several ice cream flavors to choose from as well as other fillings such as red bean and taro. The takiyaki was made fresh in front of my eyes and I asked for it to be served in a cup. I love custard everything so to find a dessert that featured custard that wasn't the typical flan or creme brulee was a treat! Definitely a great alternative to regular dessert.
