Ordering is fast with 2 kiosks and 1 in person cashier, orders take around 5 minutes with taiyaki maybe taking a bit longer NEW SWEET CORN FLAVOR REVIEW so excited for a corn flavor, I was even going to ktown. From years ago when I had somi somi, the texture of the soft serve seems slightly icier. Overall, same creamy taste. The first bite has a distinct hint of butter corn, however the after taste is a sharp sweetness that hits the back of your throat. Even the macaroon was not sweet compared to it. It would help to have some more non sweet tasting to pair with this flavor. I would suggest adding more corn flavor and lessen the sweetness to the r&d as the sweet aftertaste ended up overpowering any additional corn bites but otherwise similar quality as the other flavors. I've frequented this location a few times and usually opt for the "Upside Down Ahboong" ($6.95) however, I recently decided to give their taiyaki without any soft serve a try and loved it even more. The taiyaki served as part of the Upside Down Ahboong has a crispier texture, while the taiyaki served without the soft serve had a softer, chewy, mochi-like interior while still maintaining that crispy edge on the outside. You can order the taiyaki as a pair for $4.50, or get 5 pieces for $8.95. Somisomi offers five flavors for the filling which include nutella, taro, red bean, custard and cheese. I decided to get the taro, red bean and custard and I loved each of them. The taro filling is a bit on the sweeter side, but it has great taro flavor and was my favorite of the three. You order at the kiosk and your name is called out when your order is ready so don't expect too much interaction or service with the workers. Despite the lack of personal service, I thoroughly enjoyed all the desserts at Somisomi. It was our first time to this soft serve / dessert franchise and it was quite good, though there were a couple things that could have made it better. We got the 'Upside Down' which was Matcha soft serve with some complimentary toppings and a crispy fish cake filled with black sesame on top. I have had Taiyaki from multiple places, including in Asia, and I have always enjoyed it when it's piping hot and fresh. It just doesn't taste the same when it's not at least a little warm. So when we rec'd our dessert at Somisomi, it was a bit of a letdown when the fish was not even slightly warm. Kind of like when you have apple pie a la mode, which is vanilla ice cream on top of a hot apple pie, but when the apple pie is cold, it just doesn't taste quite as good. The cup itself is a bit small, but they do fill up the cup with a lot of ice cream. In fact, for most people who don't need a lot of calories, fat and sugar, it's enough for two people to share and so it's a decent price, if shared. The black sesame filling in our Taiyaki was good, but I expected the inside to be full of filling, and there wasn't that much. The toppings are very limited, some cookies and sprinkles, but it complemented the ice cream and overall, we enjoyed it. The store is very simple, not very elaborate decor, and there is no seating at this location. It was a bit surprising not to have any seats, not even a bench. Part of the fun of going to dessert is hanging out together. There is some outdoor seating nearby, but that is limited and it fills up quickly during rush hour. If we didn't find an outdoor table, we would have left without ordering. That is probably one of the biggest issues here, which I can understand, it's likely a strategy, to prevent crowds, you won't stay around long and you have more space, but it's just not a comfortable place to enjoy your dessert. The last part of a dessert shop experience that usually stands out is friendly and fun interaction with customers, but this was almost the opposite again. We walked in, no welcome or greeting. We waited and still no response, and realized that the staff was there just to prepare the dessert, not actually to greet customers or take orders. We had questions, sometimes we like recommendations, but the staff completely avoided eye contact. So we ordered on the tablet at the front and the staff handed us our dessert, not even with a thank you or a smile. It's not bad, it just doesn't rank high among the top dessert places in Irvine. read more
