Heard much about cafe 86 but never got a chance to stop by this Tustin District location until now. Off the bat, the store had a great cafe vibe, chill and mellow. There's a good amount of tables inside, some stool seating near the front to watch people walk by, and a couch where you can relax with some friends. Service was very friendly when I walked in and when I order the classic Halo Halo, I could tell that they took time to make it with lots of care. First impression of the Halo Halo was that it tasted very refreshing. Despite all the ingredients inside, it was not overly sweet. The Ube ice cream had great flavor, the slush base provided that refreshness, and the textual contrast of the cornflakes providing that perfect crunch was actually the star of the dessert for me. Round it out with some flavored jellies at the bottom along with jackfruit and you have yourself a well-rounded dessert. I came here when there was a sale, since I have a friend that frequents this area/establishment and notified me of the sale. It is located in the District in Tustin, so it's very out of the way for me and I'd have to make a dedicated trip here. They had a kiosk with the sale items on it so I didn't have to order verbally. When I collected the order, the staff member attempted to make conversation. I just nodded to avoid having to reply verbally. They were not able to provide me a means of carrying a large order at once, so I had to expend both my hands to carry it and I had to go back and forth between the parking lot to drop off everything we ordered from different stores in the plaza. There's too much to eat here. I let my tourist friend try the drinks. She had an unusually more positive reaction to the drinks than the usual "It's fine." However, since there isn't a branch in Lake Forest from what I've seen, I cannot come here to satisfy her drink requirement constantly. read more

I love ube desserts but sometimes I just don't taste the flavor much so I was recommended the Ube Truffle which was crunchy sweet outside like an Oreo and I could taste the semi- paste like ube on the inside. This Cafe 86 is located in the District in Tustin, and is between a ton of food and drink areas. The cafe itself has a good amount of seating inside and the menu is pretty diverse, with a load of different drink options, baked goods, sandwiches, and more! I just came for a quick drink to go, but the staff was pretty nice when I went. I got the pandan matcha, and the matcha was pretty weak, and I felt like I was mostly tasting pandan, which isn't bad at all. It was still a good drink that I got fairly quickly, so I have no gripes with it not being too heavy on the matcha. Definitely would say that this Cafe 86 would be a nice stop here in the District. This is my favorite place outside of Hawaii to get yummy Ube (purple potato) treats! My favorite are the Ube Butter Bars, Ube Crinkle Cookies and Ube Brownies. I used to like the brownies better like 6 months ago (or maybe they're just making them differently now) since now they put the word Cashew in the title and they are super full of cashews whereas before it was more a soft brownie but now it's more crunchy and dry. The flavor is still good but it's not as delicious and moist as it used to be. Everything is around $5 (some $4.50, some $5.50) so it's not too expensive since the portion sizes are good and the desserts are rich so you get full quickly. When you order online (via Toast) there is the spot to select Curbside Pickup - HOWEVER I don't believe that truly is an option because I have selected that but when you get to The District, there is nowhere to park curbside and also when I arrived there was only 1 employee in the store so it wasn't feasible for him to leave the store to deliver curbside orders. Honestly, it's not a big deal (I don't mind parking and walking in) but I do wish that they would just delete the 'curbside' option from Toast since that's confusing. read more

Blown away! My girlfriend and I ordered an ube milkshake and a strawberry calamansi. The ube tasted authentic (not taro!) and not too sweet. The strawberry calamansi was refreshing and the addition of lychee jelly added a good sweetness. This is my second time coming to Cafe 86. Unfortunately my first experience there was better. Although their foods and drinks are delicious (we LOVE the turon pop tart), the service was quite lacking. Not the workers' fault, but they seemed heavily understaffed for a Sunday morning. The cafe seemed to have waves in which one moment they were busy and other moments they had maybe two or three parties inside. Unfortunately, I came during a slower wave and even during that time, we waited 8-10 minutes for help since their self-service order system was having troubles and the server decided to help manually take orders from other patrons, despite us asking for help first. Once the order processed, we waited a rather long amount of time for our order especially since they didn't call out what was ready for pick up. Cute concept. Enticing menu. Hopeful my next visit might be better. My daughter and I came to enjoy some nice drinks at Cafe 86 this afternoon at The District Plaza in Tustin. After studying their menu and looking up "popular items" on Yelp, we were excited to try our drinks. It was good! Not the best we've had. Their boba was a bit hard, I let my daughter switch drinks with mine because she did not like it much. Their desserts were pretty much empty, we could not order the dessert of our choice. The place seemed a bit messy, although the place was not extremely packed. I am wondering if we came at a bad time, because the place itself looked so cute! We went to give them a try on Saturday. There is a ton of parking available. The Cafe itself is warm and inviting. The menu is full of way too many amazing sounding choices. When in doubt ask the awesome staff for their recommendations, but it turns out they have a lot of favorites. We got the strawberry calamansi. It is very much a strawberry lemonade so a perfect blend of sweetness and tartness. We also got an Ube matcha latte. Mix it all together and the subtle sweetness makes for a perfect sipping drink. The upside down halo-halo was next. A fun twist on the traditional halo-halo and just as delicious. Do not sleep on their baked goods. They have so many to choose from and we got a great selection of them. First up was the ube Crack cheesecake. Ube works so well with the creaminess of the cheesecake. The ube crinkle is the cookie I could easily eat a dozen of them by myself. Crispy on the outside edges and soft and moist in the middle. The turon pop tart was next. Ask if they can warm it up for you. You won't regret it. The bananas and that light pastry casing is so comforting. Last but not least is the churrocchi. Churro meets mochi in a cinnamon and sugar chewy way. It's perfect and getting a scoop of ube ice cream is the icing on the cake. I've been meaning to check out this place for a while, and actually heard about them when they first opened in Cerritos way long ago! They're a Filipino dessert spot, that sells drinks, cookies, and desserts. Their popular desserts here are the halo halo, and pretty much anything with ube. It was my first time here, so the girl at the front helped me decide on what I wanted. They also do $3 drinks on some items. I was super indecisive, so I ended up getting something simple, their sea salt cream iced coffee. I thought the coffee was going to be just okay with the first sip, but as I continued mixing it with the sea salt cream, the coffee got a lot better! I also really liked how you can taste a bit of the saltiness. The shop is small, but really cozy, and they have fun board games you can play with your friends. Cafe 86 has opened a location closer to me in Tustin. YAY! This location is at the District, taking over another former Filipino bakery's spot. I'm not sure if it's a great idea taking over a spot where a similar business didn't find success, but I can say I prefer Cafe 86 by compare. I've been to multiple Cafe 86 locations and have consistently enjoyed their products. I love their halo halo, ube leche flan cupcakes, ube crack cheesecake, ube crinkle, turon pop tart and more. On this visit, I went with my Filipino cousin. He can attest to their quality and authenticity. We stood at the counter for a long time until we realized we had to order ourselves at the kiosk. I hate these kiosks. It's not like reducing labor made their product any cheaper. We ordered 2 Halo Halo ($10.50/each) and 2 Ube Crack Cheesecake ($5.25/each), and a Turon Pop Tart ($5.50). When staff was preparing my order they only took one ONE cheesecake. I went and pulled up my receipt to see if I messed up ordering at the kiosk. No. I ordered correctly. I PAID for 2 cheesecakes. I had to show my receipt so they can get me my second cheesecake that was paid for. They have tables and chairs inside the business but they were not maintained and it was strangely hot inside. Originally we were going to wait briefly to get the dessert, but it was so hot and the chairs were so uncomfortable we went outside to wait. We enjoyed the desserts ath the many outdoor seating spots available at the District. It's so odd to me that a dessert shop would be so hot. I don't want me halo halo to melt. LOVE that halo halo. Despite being full from dinner, my cousin and I both finished our halo halo and kept raving about it the whole time. I can definitely see this on my dessert rotation whenever I need a sweet treat, but I hope management can improve the customer experience. After trying the Cafe 86 in Artesia for some Halo Halo I was excited to see this open in the District of Tustin. It's a little store with a little seating area but they have I believe the same menu as the one I've been to prior. I got the halo halo and a mini upside down halo halo. They came out looking great. Flavor and all was a little watered down it seemed like and they didn't blend the ice very well so I was constantly picking out balls of hard ice in my mouth. Some how the flavor was watered down and didn't taste like much and maybe do a good blend so the ice has been completely crushed. Finally ! I got a chance to try this place out ! I have been seeing this place all over Instagram and I was so happy they opened a spot closer to me! I came in because I know they're popular with their ube flan and I was dying to try it but unfortunately they did not have any in stock so I was a bit bummed out about it . I have been EAGERLY waiting and hoping for a Cafe 86 to open in the OC and it has finally arrived!!! THE MOOD: Located inside The District in Tustin, I was initially hesitant about visiting because let's be honest, the parking and getting in and out of The District is horrendous. However, park on the fountain side in the PetSmart lot and you'll be good. Plenty of parking and easier to get in and out. Once inside Cafe 86, there's lots of seats inside and outside, which makes it nice to hang out, especially on a nice day. Desserts are displayed in front and a giant menu as you walk in so you can easily look at your options. THE FOOD: My usual go to is the Upside Down Halo Halo and I highly recommend it. There's something about the mix of the signature halo halo base with the flan, vanilla ice cream, jack fruit, boba, coconut jellies, and Frosted Flakes that makes every bite spectacular. The chewy, creamy, crunchy texture all in one makes it a fun eating experience. They were definitely generous in all the items and I loved that every bite had Frosted Flakes all the way to the end. Superb! There's lots more on the menu to choose, so will be back to try more. The 'TUDE: Service was friendly, nice, and efficient! We went on a Sunday (the day after opening) and the crowds were consistent. Despite there being waves of customers here and there during our visit, the staff did a good job of keeping the line moving. It's really hard to say actually because everything was so good, but they brownie is chef's kiss. The ube flavor is enhanced by cashew pieces and white chocolate. It's sweet, but not too sweet, and the texture is just right. There was quite a line being that it was the first day and a Saturday night at Tustin District.
