I've been to Sonder an handful of times, and each time has been different. Some days I had great quick service others seemed to take way too long. I visited today a busy Sunday brunch day, I made sure to make reservations a week ahead of time for a party of 8 on the patio. As I know Sundays are busy. I arrived on time for my 11:30 reservation and the hostess let me know there was no availability on the patio. I was a little disappointed at how that was handled. The solution was you can wait another 20 minutes for a possible table outside or you can sit at the fire pit...or inside. I made the reservation for a special occasion so it was super frustrating. We ended up inside because we did not want to sit at the fire pit we were there to eat and drink. Out waitress was very sweet, but the service was very slow! I get it, it's super busy, but when the food came out it was cold. I enjoy myself here usually, but today was off. Drinks are always on point, but the food is sometimes a hit and miss. Went here on a weekday dinner seminar and we had beef stroganoff and steak. We also tried diff appetizers and had charcuterie board. The serving was huge for 1 person so it's worth it! I loved the appetizers esp. the bruschettas. We also had desserts which I forgot to take a photo of (brownie with ice cream and creme brûlée) which we liked! Very happy with our date night here last night. The beer was cold and the drinks were well made. The bruschetta was on point and the food was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Only issue I had, would be the thick cut pork chop was not thick at all. Well seasoned and well cooked, along with the on point grilled mixed veggies and beer battered fries. The wife's salad was delicious but I would've added a protein. Sonder is somewhat modern and always very clean. The hostesses are welcoming but seem to need a table or podium to work from. Yeah. The food is good and there are some unique dishes. This place is great for kids because they have tons that picky eaters will enjoy. With that said, I couldn't tell you anything that really stood out that differentiates itself from other "American" food places. The mimosa flight was nice, the tater tots were good, and surprisingly, their fruit salad was delicious (I love dragon fruit!). The chicken fried steak was good aside from the fact that the gravy was a little grainy and I'd say that the pizza dip was just meh. Atmosphere was good. I ordered ahi tuna w/wasabi. Manager set it down and announced it and said "we don't have any wasabi, hope that's ok" and walked away. Then I ordered the filet tip tacos. The meat appeared to have been under the heat lamp for an extended period of time and was very tough and discolored. Believe all the hype you read about this great restaurant! The food is phenomenal and they have some unique dishes and appetizers! The customer service is wonderful and the inside or patio are great places to be seated. They have live music and comedy performance almost every week. Really looked great on line ; however , that was not the case in reality. the first thing that got my attention was having to ask for utensils. I have a feeling the wait staff is understaffed. The service was not great and the food was not great. Not surprisingly, even after so many years the service as well as the food wasn't the greatest. We went to Sonder for brunch to celebrate a birthday. We were able to make a last minute reservation only an hour before which was great so we didn't have to worry about waiting for a table. We ordered the bruschetta to start for the table, and it was delicious and full of flavor. The food came out quickly but was obviously made fresh. The vibe is very chill and a great spot for brunch with friends, but also kid friendly. My friend and I started with the delicious pork belly brussels sprouts, the flavor was delicious. I had the fried chicken with coleslaw, mashed potatoes that had a delightful taste and a nice big biscuit and soft flavored butter. Sonder opened up a few years ago, and it really presented itself as a hipster kind of joint, offering various "New American" fare with a lot of arugula and the like. Over time, I think the business model has changed just a bit to better match the area demographic. They make pretty tasty burgers, steaks, etc. and serve a nice variety of upscale drinks and craft beer. There's soft "New Country" music playing inside the restaurant, and there's a gang of Solar Bros, Rig Operators, and off duty firemen who seem to frequent the bar. That's a little more what I'd expect in Northwest Bakersfield. Over the past few weeks, my wife and I have debated back and forth if we are attending the fair this year. We only enjoy the food there anyway, so when Sonder announced their fair themed menu with corn dogs, funnel fries, and the like, that settled things. This restaurant is far more comfortable to spend your money at than the fair, and you're less likely to get in a fight or have your car stolen in the parking lot. We showed up around 645pm on a Tuesday and chose to sit in the spacious and well lit and nicely decorated dining room. The hostess promptly parked us at a high top right near the bar, and there were roughly six other small groups scattered around the restaurant. Our server greeted us quickly and took our drink orders. I selected one of the KRBC (Drink local!) options on the menu, and my wife, who is suffering from a soda addiction, went for a Diet Coke. They were each promptly delivered, and we had the opportunity to order our meals. I ordered the hot link sandwich from the fair menu, and my better half selected a plate of fresh macaroni and cheese. She's a kid at heart. This is the last time we saw our server for over half an hour. My pint of Isaballa Blonde lasted me about 8 or 10 minutes, and the empty glass was placed at the edge of the table for all to see. I eventually got up and got my wife her jacket out of the car and hoped to find it refilled when I returned, but alas. It was not. By now, the Diet Coke was bone dry, too. We sat awkwardly looking around and trying to spot a staff member for some time while listening to the various Jason Aldean songs being played on the radio. Our thirst remained unquenched. Finally, at the 35-minute mark, our server returned from his absence, and it was like nothing happened. We got our refills, and another ten minutes went by before our food arrived. It was as though time just stopped for a brief period, and we were the only ones who noticed it. Maybe the kitchen got backed up, but a refill would have been nice. Anyway, the hot link sandwich and fries were on point. I finished every bite, and my wife really enjoyed her humongous skillet of Mac and cheese. We would have tried the funnel fries for desert, but we didn't want to hang out for another hour. With two beers, a soda and our two entrees, we got out of here for about $55. It's a little pricey, but we would have spent more at the fair anyway, so I wasn't too upset. Steak night here is obviously a lot more and usually runs us about $130. Atmosphere is ok they do have good music which was probably the best thing about this place. Oh and another thing it's an automatic 20% gratuity for awful service maybe that's why they don't care to give good service because they are getting 20% no matter what .
