When you're on long road trips, and time is of the essence, your dining options are limited. Especially late night. This was one of those situations. I stopped by Sonic on a Saturday night. It was a bizarre experience on multiple levels. I saw a sign about Sonic off of the highway. What's annoying is that the fast food joint is actually a few miles down rather than being right off of the highway. Not off to a good start. Ambiance (4/5): Sonic has the old school drive in diner vibe which is cool. A blast from the past. I used the drive through to place my order. Service (1/5): This is where things got weird. I placed my order and the amount I was quoted seemed a bit high. When I paid, I wasn't given a receipt. They also didn't give me my change. I have never seen that happen at a fast food restaurant. I should have said something, but I was tired and decided to let it fly. I'm not saying this is happening, but it's a possibility. For customers paying cash, maybe they overcharge a few dollars. Plus keep the change. And put something else in the computer so that the employees can cheat everyone out of a couple bucks. That multiplies after some time. Maybe it was an honest mistake. Just a bit shady. Drinks (N/A): I had a drink in my car, so I passed, but typically, getting a drink is a must at Sonic. Some of the best drinks in fast food. They're known for their slushes and cherry limeades. Next time around. Food (4/5): I ordered the mozzarella sticks (medium), fries with groovy sauce, and a corn dog. A dinner of champions. Not many fast food joints have mozzarella sticks so that was nice. For fast food, the mozzarella sticks were quite good. Nice pull factor on the cheese. And marinara sauce for dipping. I didn't know what groovy sauce was but I rolled with it. It's essentially a thousand island sauce. It may be an upcharge (I don't know 100% because I didn't receive my receipt). If that's the case, a little weird because sauces are pretty much always free at fast food restaurants. Last but not least, the corn dog was solid too. Not something you typically see on a fast food menu either. It made me feel like I was at the rodeo. All of the food seemed pretty fresh (and not sitting under a heat lamp for a while as you'll get with some fast food). Stopped here on a road trip from San Francisco to San Antonio. Appreciated the patch of grass in the center for me and my pup to be able to stretch our legs and enjoy the sun. Ordered a hot dog, sweet tea, and tots - nothing special. Tots tasted real fried, hot dog not memorable, the sweet tea and sonic ice were the star. Wow! Just stopped by for a nice easy meal. Asked for a slushy to go with my son's drink. She said the slushy machine wasn't working, to select something else. Ok, asked her to hold while my son looked at the menu and she said "I do not have time to hold." If your machine doesn't work and I have to come up with a new order, why are you being rude to me? Ambiance was the first thing we noticed. It was a jammed up mess in the parked to order area. Cars lined up to street. People trying to back out and finding the line to order. My perception was the kids working there were managing well to reduce the cluster. And that is the only praise I can give. We ordered 2 meals. A crispy chicken, with tater tots. And sprite. Do NOT waste your time at this business. The kids staffing the business are a waste of your time! We pulled into a very busy Sonic on Christmas Eve staffed by 5 high school kids with no adult supervision. One of the young girls told us on the speaker that it would be about 15 minutes before they could take our order and would we mind waiting. We said it was understandable and not a problem. In 15 minutes we pushed the order button again and the same girl said that she was sorry they were no longer taking orders at that time. We said, "What?" She just kept repeating, "Have a blessed evening." Over and over and over, like you would expect from a high school mentality. As we drove around the building, 5 what appeared to all be high school kids stood and waved at us repeating, "Have a blessed evening." So disrespectful. I'm sure they thought they were being cool, but mocking a Christian saying on Christmas Eve is rude to a level beyond their understanding. Shame on them. Look, don't come to Sonic expecting either than mediocre fast food and you're golden. It's cheap, fast and okay. That's what I want from my fast-food stop in Fort Stockton :). This location is right down the main drag and has grass areas on either side, great if you're traveling with your dog. I got the Chicken Tender meal for $7 or something like that. I was actually surprised by the tenders, as they were slightly above average, and it came with a ton of fries. It was a big sized meal for cheap, so I'd suggest the Tenders for a good deal on the road. Service was very quick as well. These people are disgustingly rude! Went there for a large Dr Pepper with real cream and when it came out it tasted like there was no syrup it tasted like straight carbonated water. So they took it back and brought another and it was same thing again and she said very rudely that both machines are filled with the syrup and it was obvious that it wasn't because IF it was then it would taste like Dr Pepper not carbonated water. This is only my third time going to a Sonic. My previous visits have only been in Houston before I lived in Houston. There are Sonics in California...like 2, but I don't think Sonic warrants a drive longer than 15 minutes. I wasn't one of those suckers that drove over an hour to get a stupid Krispy Kreme. Well this Sonic took me over 14 hours to get to, since it was one of my pit stops on my move to Houston from California. I packed up all my precious belongings in my car and drove 24 hours straight....no sleep. Sleep is for women. It only took about 7 Monsters to do the job. I'm surprised my heart didn't explode. This Sonic was my oasis in the middle of nowhere, literally. There's nothing like an Oreo shake in the middle of the desert to cool you off and to get the Monster taste out of your mouth. It was all I had at this Sonic, but it was the perfect place to relax and enjoy not being in the car. I asked for the sauces for each and she told me she would charge me 25 cents for each sauce.... What? Sonic always gives an abundance of sauces which is why I love them. A regular strawberry lemonade is what I was given, and I go to taste it and it is so gross... Just warm strawberries, lemonade, and a bunch of ice. Like the worst drink I've ever tasted. OK, after reading some of the reviews from the out-of-towners, I felt the need to inform you of a few things. The water in Fort Stockton is very alkaline, so the tea and lemonade will have a "different" taste. Until 1958 we had Comanche Springs providing us clean, spring water. Then Clayton Williams Sr. drilled several wells west of town that tapped into the aquifer feeding Comanche Springs and the Springs dried up because the farms out west of town were pumping 70 million gallons a day. Now Fort Stockton gets its water from some wells that give our drinking water that decidedly alkaline taste. Just wanted to clear that up for all the tea drinkers out there. Next, this is a FAST FOOD place, not a 5-star Michelen restaurant. If you are complaining about the chicken tenders, you may need to re-think your dining criteria. (If you are eating out of a paper boat, maybe you should not have such high standards.) I like this Sonic, and had to leap to their defense. read more

WARNING: SWEET TEA = SHIT TEA Driving back from Big Bend National Park to Austin I needed a customary long trip Route 44 Sweet Tea. I received my drink quickly enough but found out the tea they gave me was not sweet. After receiving the correct formula I realized it didn't matter as I was grossed out at the funny (not the haha funny) taste it had. I was reminded the water in Fort Stockton is NOT filtered hence the aftertaste. Add insult to injury they do not use the cubelet ice Sonic is known for. So yeah this sweet tea was shit tea! Finding a decent meal in Fort Stockton is a real challenge. We found most to be run-down and a bit on the sleazy side. The Sonic Drive Inn is bright and cheerful, the carhops sweet and the burgers and fries as good as you can get, especially of the fast food variety. I am a Fort Stockton resident and am fully aware that I need to keep my expectations low when selecting a fast food restaurant. If I find myself at a fast food restaurant rather than one of the many decent places in town, suffice it to say something has gone terribly wrong in my day and I am patronizing a notoriously awful restaurant as a last resort. That being said, Fort Stockton's Sonic is at the bottom of the list of places I will begrudgingly visit. Today's visit was the result of some less-than-ideal circumstances. My great uncle needed ice to nurse a sprained ankle and I knew that Sonic's tiny ice nuggets perfectly contour the injured area and would make him the most comfortable. I pulled into a stall on Sonic's west side and hit the red button. After waiting for 10 minutes with no success, I moved to the east side and tried again. Another 10 minutes passed with no response from the inside. Despite the screen urging me to wait and my call would be answered, I assumed that maybe both stalls were out of order and moved to a third stall. I only had to wait 3 minutes for an answer this time. The carhop's tone was clearly annoyed, but I understood. I would hate working at this Sonic, too. I ordered the ice and 2 drinks and was told there was no ice. Confused, I asked the carhop what she meant. Sonic has no ice? 50 percent of the menu requires ice. She barked back that there were no bags for the ice. I then asked that my order be canceled and that I was tired of waiting and started to pull away from the stall. The carhop shouted back that they were especially busy, implying that was the reason for the lack of ice bags and justified the 20+ minute wait. With that in mind, I counted the cars on the way out. I am familiar with a stressful workday and was more than willing to forgive the situation, should there be a situation. Unfortunately, 12 cars do not a situation make. I've visited many more Sonic restaurants at full capacity and did not notice a lull in customer service or speed. If this had been an isolated incident, I would let it go. However, this was only one of several episodes where this Sonic was a disappointment and a disgrace to the town. I've been told before that there would be an hour-long wait for a soft drink because the staff was so backed up. My parents have had multiple orders terribly botched because the carhop was too busy shouting the order total back before the order was completed. My brother even complains about the time Sonic told him they were out of ice cream. Ice cream! It is so embarrassing that this is how Fort Stockton is represented. This community is blessed with several hard-working individuals who deserve recognition and accolades, but are sorely lost among these poor employees. This Sonic either needs a serious makeover or to be shut down entirely. I don't think the community will suffer without it. read more
