Every time I drive home to Maine from Boston, I fight with myself over whether or not to drive in to the Sonic. I argue with myself back and forth all the way north on route 1 until I see the bright yellow Sonic sign emerging on the right side of the highway. Here is what the debate in my head looks like... PROS They specialize in tater tots They are open ALL the time The drive up service is kind of cool They put a LOT of crushed ice in their drinks and I love ice They specialize in tater tots They have a "happy hour" every day from 2-5 which includes $1 corn dogs You can order breakfast any time They have cheap mozzarella sticks They specialize in tater tots CONS The service can be VERY slow They can attract a rowdy clientele The burgers are pretty gross-avoid If it's not "happy hour" their drinks can be inexplicably expensive Sadly, my love of tater tots usually trumps my better judgement and there I sit, in the long line, waiting while other cars blare their radios and honk their horns, and think "why did I think this was a good idea?", until the glass door opens...and they hand me the bag of tots. read more

First off, Sonic is quite far from where I live and it takes me an hour to drive over there. Regardless, my friends and I wanted to try it and thought the idea of having our food delivered to our car outside seemed cool. My burger was messed up the first time around and it took a long time for the person to answer back through the outdoor order speaker system. The drive thru line was packed and it took awhile for someone to come out to give me my new burger as well. The food was good, however service was so slow for a fast food restaurant!! For the Sonic experience, it was nice. But I don't think I'd be coming here too often especially when I live quite far. Don't waste your time if you live really far away. read more

Since I never even knew of Sonic most of my adult life, it quickly became my favorite fast-food place when I was first exposed to it at the tender age of 32 on a cross-country trip home from Arizona. I think I ate it at least 5 times in that 7 day trip! This location is the only one within a reasonable distance, and I have not been able to visit much since it's a bit out of the way for me when I'm heading out of town, but recently I had an appointment nearby and decided to take the time. I pulled up and ordered at my parking spot to dine in the car. The first time I pressed the button, a woman said she'd be right with me. So I waited a few minutes. (Note that it wasn't very busy- not many people inside or outside). 5 entire minutes passed, so I rang again. This time, she was able to take my order, but didn't apologize for the wait or acknowledge that I'd already buzzed. That was slightly annoying, but not the end of the world. When I got my food, it was tasty, but I had asked for just mayo and ketchup on the burger, and instead I got mustard and ketchup- but no ketchup for the tots. (Maybe you have to ask but I forgot and just ate them without). Not the most impressive Sonic, but it's a fast food place with tasty cheap eats so I was still satisfied. read more

I ordered wings. First I was surprised they had them here because my sonic back home stopped serving them and replaced them with sauced popcorn chicken. My wings weren't even shaken in the sauce, it was drizzled on top. They were cold and tasted like they weren't even cooked all the way through. The customer service needs a makeover. We gave the location another chance because I don't like to write a business off because of one bad experience. This time around, our server was monotone and clearly didn't want to be working. We asked for "a lot" of ketchup when we ordered. When he dropped off our food we asked if there was catchup and he told us it was in the bag. There was no ketchup to be found and nobody to answer the call button. I am addicted to Cherry Lime-Ade, could drink them all day long... The food is what you would expect just $4-5 more than anywhere else... I love Hot Dogs, Love them & the thought of a cheese hotdog is GREAT, so I get it & WHAT??? Dried Cheese, I really wish they would just invest in cheese sauce, Its cheap, it comes on Nachos... Walked up and told an employee who basically did nothing. Sat back in the car a few more minutes, then turned around and left. Go to Wendy's!! This location was extremely packed and busy. The drive thru was wrapped around. The drive ins were full with a couple in queue. People were waiting so long they ending up pulling out without ordering. We waited so long we had to repress the button to order. Waiting with a hungry man, teen and toddler is thee worst. I also noticed people at the door. Long line. Assuming it was order pickups they the mobile app because the inside dining was closed. COVID-19. Ordering was also not smooth because they didn't have all menu items available. I get it COVID-19. They should have thought of a better wait to communicate that instead of having to repeat it to everyone. The woman that came on the intercom sounded tired and overworked. She admitted she was busy and tired. I questioned the amount of staff working at that time. I could only imagine the fast food industry. Overworked and underpaid! We finally were able to get our order in and then another wait ensued. Food finally came and I was super disappointed. My burger already didn't have the bread I was anticipating but I knew that part. The burger itself was not what I was expecting. Sloppy like most fast food burgers but when I say the bbq sauce on the bottom that I couldn't see advertised on the menu caught me by surprise and not a good one. It changed the taste of my burger and wasn't really tasty in my opinion. Maybe if I was looking for that taste then I might have felt different but we all know when you have a certain taste for a burger and when you don't get that it's disappointing. I will say the infamous slushee didn't disappoint. I think Sonic should to stick to those. I love the drive in concept as well but they have to work on their menu. Unfortunately it was a little bit of a letdown. I was taking my other half there for lunch as he's been driving me around for the last eight weeks after having surgery on February 9. After leaving a meeting we stopped there for lunch however we ordered the Coney Island chili dog as well as a corndog tater tots and a soda. His Coney Island hotdog was fine but it's not hot. My corndog was crunchy but not hot even lukewarm it was not. And the tater tots were cold. Unfortunately you cannot go in the restaurant you can only order through the kiosks which we did and then sat outside. Asked for a cup of ice because I already had a drink in the car and they charge you $.30 for a little cup of ice. Was extremely disappointed in the meal the service was very good but that's really the only good thing about the whole lunching experience. Which is totally unfortunate because this is one of his favorite places to go well we've gone to other sonics particularly the one in Warwick Rhode Island and had a very much better experience there. read more

I've been here twice, and unfortunately, I've been horribly disappointed both times. Here's why. The first time I went I didn't get served...at all. I parked and hit the button to show that I was ready to order...crickets. It was during rush hour, and they were busy. But after waiting for 15 minutes. I called it a loss and left. I can't believe I'm having to write another review about my experience here, if you read my last one I said I would never come back, but I felt like they deserved a second chance, BOY WAS I WRONG! Traditional craving-style fast food. Problem is you play Russian Roulette when ordering, you never know what is going to be in your bag. Today I ordered a slush, boneless wings and a pretzel twist. I got the correct flavor slush, but got the wrong wings, and they gave me mozzarella sticks instead of the twist. Unfortunately I didn't realize their mistake until I got to my destination. This is not the first time I have been given wrong items or items are missing overall. I have previously contacted their management and even corporate and they have previously refused to make it right or do anything, so I don't bother contacting them anymore. Also buyer beware, don't order from them through door dash or other meal delivery services. Sonic adds an additional fee on the final receipt that isn't a delivery fee from the service. read more

I went to sonics and ordered 2 m&m sonic blast milkshakes. When I got my milkshakes back, I started to drink mine. I did not feel or taste the m&m's at ALL. I was VERY disappointed and unsatisfied. The employee that gave me my milkshakes was very rude aswell. She gave me very poor customer service. Anyways, when I got my milkshakes back, not only did they not redo the milkshake, but they put only 12 m&m's on top of the whip cream AND they took out my cherry. I was very excited to get my milkshake back and all i get back is CRAP. Overall I do like the place but the service was TERRIBLE and UNBELIEVABLE. Please do BETTER!! praise the lord jesus. read more

Remember when Sonic first opened and basically shut down the right lane of Route 1? I do. Because I was there, shutting it down with the rest of a befuddled New England. The hype has passed. Long passed, and when a wave of nostalgia struck, I stopped in during the post-lunch rush for a quick dog and cherry limeade. The deflated remnants of such a highly touted chain's arrival are apparent, and after all the hype has the left the building, all that's left is a bag of lukewarm coagulations. The environment felt dour, the employees appeared disinterest, the food limped in its grease-stained packaging, and dining room sat silent - all during Happy Hour? "Happy" because you get two mozzarella sticks for a dollar, and most drinks are half price, I reckon. Of all the emotions emanating from Sonic at 2:45pm on a Monday, happy was not one of them. The dark cloud: none of the food (a pretzel dog, tots and the aformentioned mozzarella sticks) was hot, even when pranced from directly from the fry-o-later. Even the impossible to err cherry limeade was 92% syrup, and tough to drink. Marinara in a pouch. I don't get why this place is so darn popular. The food is so greasy it never agrees with me, the carhops are not typically server by people on roller skates or roller blades which is part of the mystique of this type of place, or so I thought. On one day we went to the stall and ordered 2 shakes. I let them know that we had a nut allergy in the car as one of the shakes was chocolate and the other was chocolate peanut butter. When she brought the drinks to the car she said "I think this is the peanut butter one" as they put a label on the Styrofoam cup. The word "think" concerned me so I decided to taste the non peanut butter one BEFORE giving it to my daughter. Well, BIG PROBLEM!!! They screwed up and put the label on the incorrect drink. The manager met me at the door to the kitchen after 15 minutes of waiting and she tossed the drinks in the trash and made new ones. I demanded a refund and after a few minutes of explaining the severity of this situation she agreed to cancel the credit card transaction. This is by far the worst fast food experience I've ever had. It's honestly so bad that it's funny. They double charged us but "didn't have a manager" on site so they jipped me out of $20. When I contacted corporate they basically said "We let the manager of the store know" That was 5 weeks ago and nothing has happened since. The staff is a whole different problem. None of this has anything to do with Covid and I understand what people are going through in these troubling times but these people are miserable. IT MAKES SENSE WHY WE DONT SEE MANY SONICS AROUND... ITS SHITTY. Im disgusted after my last experience. I ordered a large pineapple slush with nerds and pop rocks. When i got my drink it had no pop rocks in it. But i drank it anyway, my instincts told me not to drink it fast as i wanted to, i always check my drinks to make sure its clean and sure enough i found a small dead bee right in the middle. It made me puke. Seeing this destroys my trust in any restaurant. After waiting 40 minutes for our order, and seeing 2 other customers ask for refunds, my husband asked to speak to the manager, only to be told "he was really busy." He politely insisted. After 15 minutes a server said that if my husband would like to wait by the kitchen he would try to come out. My husband explained to the server that that was not acceptable, along with the soggy tots and sandwich he was finally served. After waiting another 10 minutes for the manager, who never came out, we left. It is clear that this location is incapable of serving more than a handful of customers at a time, and the manager did the location no justice with his piss-poor service and complete lack of customer service. Life is full of both good and bad decisions. Good is grabbing that super healthy salad while out on the road when looking for a bite to eat. Then there are the times you get unhealthy cravings with convenience tied in. Those are the times I've been to Sonic, whether late at night after a few drinks or an afternoon of driving around the North Shore and wanting something quick and kitschy. Sonic's marketing is slick but the food needs to be better to keep me coming back. I really do love the concept of ordering and eating in your car from teenagers on four wheel skates, what is more American than that!? But much of the food, blech. Soggy hot dog buns come with a decentlyl done Chicago dog, why must the bread out of all things ruin a good thing? The drinks, both confusing and overwhelming come to you very underwhelming and leave you with a "why did I order THAT again?" feeling. There are few things done well here. The $1.49 corn dog is adequate but how difficult is it to mess something like that up? My favorite item here is the tater tots, with cheese or without. I'm sure I'll make the shortsighted decision again to come back here, whether it's because I am close by heading north on Rt 1 or my wallet is feeling light and I want to save a few bucks.
