Other was a brisket dinner. If you asked for lean it has to be sliced. But they will chop it up for you. Add an extra slice of bread and make a "Dagwood" sandwich. Fries were very good too. This location is SO hit or miss. Mostly miss. Tonight we received RAW broccoli with our (to-go) meal. I ordered pulled chicken, and after a solid 10 minute wait at the window, I was told there was no pulled chicken, so I switched to brisket. Then after another long wait, they magically produced pulled chicken, which was absolutely horrible, cold, and undercooked, nothing like the pulled chicken we are used to. Our orders are also often wrong in some way shape or form. This is why I don't like tip culture - we are asked for a tip before we even receive the food. Let me start off by writing for the record - I like Sonny's, always have. However, the Sonny's that I like is the one in Titusville. Everything this location did not have, I am spoiled by how well they do in Titusville, so what the heck is the deal with this one outside of Viera? I have no idea. From the get-go I had a feeling this was going to be a less than stellar experience. On this particular evening, Sonny's wasn't even our first or second choice, only because we had forgotten there was a Sonny's down in this area. But once we realized, we made a straight shot to it. What was even more so enticing was seeing how lightly busy, to not really at all, this Sonny's was last night. So, in we go... We walked in, were ignored from several waitresses, the lady working the bar area in the entrance area as well, and no greeter to be seen or heard. So we wait, and wait...and wait. Finally, out of what I will call the party room, shoots out the greeter. What in the world was she doing hiding in there, when not only was my party of three but another party of about 4-5 folks behind us waiting, is beyond me. Anyway, we get sat down... Now, while at the table, we wait, and wait, and...wait. The waitress finally shows up to take our drink orders, our meal orders, and we wait again. Why the service was so painfully slow, when the location had maybe 10-tables with mostly couples, again, is beyond me. Food shows up - my dinner mates were good with their meals, but mine was not up to the par of what you expect from Sonny's. The pulled pork was sloppily pulled, and the St. Louis ribs were overcooked. At least the cole slaw and baked beans sides were edible. Service was simply nonexistent, not once, *not once* did our waitress drop by to check for drink refills or how the meal was going. I guess she knew she was doing poorly...So now, we are trying to leave and that was an ordeal in itself. No only did we have to wave over another waitress to get our bill, we ended up getting the wrong bill. So, we wait - again - as the waitress goes to the manager to fix this mixup. Finally, mix up gets fixed and we can leave, and as for me, to probably not come back for a very, very, very long time... Sonny's BBQ 150 Sheriff Dr., Melbourne, FL 32940 .5 Stars (Chain restaurant review) ***SWILL ALERT*** When the name of Sonny's BBQ blinked back at me from my random name generator I was filled with a sense of anticipation. According to the internet, they were founded right here in the Sunshine State by Floyd "Sunny" Tillman in 1968, with the first location being in Gainesville. Bob Yarmuth purchased the company in 1991 and continues as owner and CEO today. As of 2016, they have 113 locations across eight Southeastern states and are headquartered in Maitland, FL. So, while this may be a regional chain, it's still a local joint and I love patronizing local businesses. My service pro for the day was Melva and she is outstanding. I ordered a Sonny's Sampler with all the meats (I know you said that in the Arby's commercial voice) along with sides of slaw and baked beans and one Brisket Grilled Cheese Sandwich with a side of Tater Tots. I sat back and relaxed while Melva ran my order back (not literally, but she did hustle). I noticed how clean, neat and well-lit the place was. It really was nice to sit inside and I was sure, with 113 locations, the food was going to be at least above average. I have to stop looking ahead like this as I was so incredibly wrong about this place. Melva was soon seen bringing my order over so I prepared myself for the task at hand. Everything smelled as it should and who doesn't love the smell of BBQ? I was actually salivating just a bit when I put the first bite of pulled pork from Sonny's Sampler. The meat was slimy; in fact, it all was. The only way you get slimy meat is if it is frozen and reheated in the microwave. They served a fulsome amount, but if it isn't edible, is it a good value for the money? I did not try the sliced brisket, chicken, or ribs, as the pulled pork was enough slime for the day. I took a taste of the slaw and found it to be your average run-of-the-mill food service bottom-of-the-barrel industrial strength slop I wouldn't offer to a dog if I had one. The beans were overcooked and had the consistency of soft-serve ice cream. Forcing myself to continue the job at hand, I grabbed the Brisket Grilled Cheese and took a sample bite. This was, to quote the menu, "a cheesy blend of chopped brisket, queso and shredded cheddar, topped with sliced cheddar and served on garlic bread." Now, if that doesn't sound tasty as all get out, I'm a monkey's uncle. I am sure it would have been had it been cooked properly. As overdone as it was, it was hard to tell exactly what it was supposed to be other than old shoe leather. As I use a cane, it was difficult to make two trips from the restaurant to the car simply because the staff did not offer any assistance. I purchased two sandwiches and two drinks. I had a meal voucher (virtual Mastercard) from United, but with the condition that it would decline any charge over $15. The woman that helped was fantastic (I can't remember her name). Being brain dead from travel I had trouble figuring out what I could order. She saved me and recommended the Smoked Turkey Big Deal special which came just under $15. First the good news. Sonny's has reopened in the MFF Cafeteria here at KSC. Now the bad news. The quality of the food from the cafeteria is worse than the quality of food that was served from the trailer in the MFF parking lot. I ordered my 10 dry-rubbed chicken wings for $11. When I got back to my cubicle, what I saw in the picture was wimpy, misshapen, poor excuses for the quality I was previously used to. Also, the dry-rub application was too much and too salty. worst experience I have ever had at a Sonny's location. we called ahead hours for a party of 25 we arrived and the servers response was "uhhh let me see what we are going to do with you" no one was prepared. We got the bartender as our server. Which already had tables. the poor server was doing the best she can, but it took 40min to get drinks, an 1.5 to receive food. Half the table receives food and then we are informed we are out of items multiple people have ordered after half the table is eating. I will NEVER be back to this location. Some great BBQ!!! The waitress was so attentive and kind. She started us with some Arnold Palmer (1/2 tea & 1/2 lemonade), which came with free refills. We had the pulled pork egg rolls and smoked wings to start. The meat in the pork egg rolls was so juicy and tender and the outer shell was perfectly crisp and crunchy. The wings were delicious and smoked just right. Like the appetizers, my meal did not disappoint! My ribs were nice and tender with a slight hint of char which added to the bbq authenticity. The pulled pork and brisket were so soft and succulent dripping with their natural juiciness. My 2 sides were baked beans which were an even blend of sweet and tangy, and tater tots which were crisp but not greasy at all. The meal came with cornbread or garlic bread. The cornbread came as a cute little muffin, mildly sweet and moist with bits of corn baked in. Decent BBQ place close to a few hotels. Very convenient for the road warriors and traveling folk that happen upon this area of the country. Did it's job and left me full. It isn't going to blow you away in terms of making you weep with joy upon eating the best BBQ of your life but it satisfies a need for sustenance. I loved the staff and the restaurant but I've have beef brisket before that I swear showed me the gates of heaven and this was not that. For that reason they do not get my fifth star. It used to be a consistently reliable chain, then individual locations seemed to be losing the touch, and now I'm regularly encountering locations that are just not up to the standards of recent years and years long ago. To wit: the location in north Melbourne. The place looked fairly new, if not brand new, clean, spacious, etc. At 3pm there were two tables occupied and the host person took me to a table. right slam against the other diners. I asked for more spacing, considering potential covid fumes, etc., and was seated elsewhere. Thank you. The food: I ordered a pulled pork sandwich, beans, slaw, and unsweet tea. The tea came out sweet and had to send it back. The beans were kind of cold and the slaw had a bitter/sour taste to it. Something was "off" with the slaw but I couldn't identify it. Best to stay safe and avoid it, which I did. The pulled pork! OMG! Almost half of it was fatty chunks and strands. Only half of what was served was actually edible. I don't send food back for adjustment, because you just never know what might happen to your rejected food in the kitchen (in ANY restaurant kitchen.) The value: Not worth it. About $14 for maybe $5 worth of decent food. My quest to find a Sonnys that resembles a Sonnys from the 80s or 90s continues. I visited last week for the first time with neighbors who wanted to try this place. I had the pulled chicken sandwich. The place is nice, clean, well decorated and the service was exceptional. It was my first time at a BBQ but didn't expect pulled chicken to be so dry. Adding lots of sauce helped. I decided to give it another try this evening, going solo and ordered a Grilled Chicken sandwich. The waitress was very attentive and friendly, she advised the chicken breast was very thick and it would take longer to cook which was Ok by me. When it arrived I was surprised to find the cook had cut the chicken breast into small pieces as if it were being served to a 4 yr old or someone with no teeth. While it was fully cooked, it was also very dry and I'm sure chopping it up was the culprit. I forgot to mention it to the waitress so I'm not sure if this is how they normally prepare a grilled chicken sandwich or it was just a poorly trained cook. The waitress got bonus points when she came back with $6.10 in change giving me all singles, not a $5 and a $1 bill. Doing so gave me the option to compute a reasonable tip. We had stopped at the Brevard zoo on our way home to Fort Lauderdale when we saw the Sonny's sign. We were pretty excited, as sonny's left south Florida so we haven't had sonny's since a trip near Daytona. I was happy to see that some things haven't changed. The macaroni and cheese was just as good as we remembered. Oh how I have missed the corn nuggets with the cinnamon butter. I don't eat meat/poultry/pork but still felt there were plenty of choices for me. I had the salad bar and my husband ate the Brunswick stew that came with it. Everything was fresh and there was enough of a variety. I would have liked cucumber slices vs the diced cucumber they had, but again it was enjoyable. I also had a side of Mac n cheese. My daughter had the kid's Mac n cheese. It came with a side and she opted for the corn on the cob. My husband had the smoked turkey with, yes you guessed it, Mac n cheese. He also had broccoli which looked very good and fresh. My daughter had a slice of the turkey and enjoyed it too He also ordered the redneck egg rolls. He said they were very good.
