Stopped by Sonny's BBQ around 11:30AM on 02-19-26 to get a sandwich for lunch. I ordered the regular Chopped Beef Brisket Sandwich. I did NOT enjoy the sandwich. First, the burger bun was fresh and extremely soft, probably the best thing on this sandwich. There were a lot of tender chopped beef briskets on the sandwich, but the brisket was cold, bland, no seasoning, lacked the smokiness flavor I was expecting, and the appearance of the beef brisket seemed as if it was not properly prepared and cooked. I recently had dinner at Sonny's and I was impressed. The BBQ was cooked perfectly, the meat was juicy and had the right amount of smoke and seasoning. The sides were great and the Pecan Pie Egg rolls are a sweet treat worth indulging in. The restaurant is a newer rebuilt Sonny's and was clean and had friendly staff. My husband and I went to Sonnys in Zephyrhills today. I ordered a chicken sandwich with a sweet pototo. The potato was 5 inches and 1/3 of it was hard as a rock. I sent it back and asked for coleslaw instead. As I was halfway through the sandwich, a bone was suddenly in my mouth. I was so freaked out I could not eat anymore of the sandwich. The coleslaw was fine. Our server was a lovely girl and felt really bad about my experience I told her that this was not her fault. We tipped her over 20%. I may not ever go back. read more

Every meat I tasted seemed like it was boiled and then grilled. Food tastes like it's for diabetics, no flavor at all. Brisket was moist but flavorless like a grilled sponge, ribs taste like they were 100% depending on the bbq sauce to save them. To cap it off, the lady who took my order at the "to go" window seemed extremely unhappy to be there. I couldn't get her to help me out with explaining some of the options on the menu, so I just randomly chose options. Most of my $40 worth of food ended up in the trash or dog bowl. read more

This is the first Sonny's I have ever been to that looked different from their standard model. It's quite large and even has a large waiting area. It had just opened when we arrived, but was filling up fast. I did take a peek around at the place, just because I've been eating at Sonny's my whole life and this was just so different than any other's. It was very clean, including the bathrooms. The salad bar looked quite nice and proved to be popular with the customers. Since this was my mom's choice of restaurant, she insisted that we order the corn nuggets as an appetizer. Luckily, I read the menu first that said they came topped with powdered sugar. (WHAT?) We asked the waitress, a lovely young lady, who said they could omit that thankfully and she substituted a side of ranch instead. They came out promptly, piping hot and delicious. Mom ordered the Sweet Carolina Sandwich with Baked Beans. She also ordered a side of French Fries. She took half of everything home, her eyes are bigger than her stomach - plus the serving sizes are really quite large. She enjoyed it all. I ordered the Smokin' Gun Sandwich with a Baked Potato. The Smokin' Gun is brisket, cheddar jalapeño sausage, red onion and banana pepper with mustard bbq sauce on a bun. It was delicious, but kind of stingy on the mustard sauce, so when I looked for more, I noticed that was the ONLY flavor they did not keep on the tables. I had to ask our waitress for some. They didn't even keep it in bottles, only in condiment packets. (I guess we are too far south for mustard bbq sauce to be popular or something.) nevertheless, I really enjoyed the sandwich, more than I thought I would. Disappointment to say the least. This location has been going downhill for a while now. They did remodel, and it looks nice, but service has gone way downhill. It's as if you are a bother being there. Menu no longer has portions indicated. So didn't know if the price listed for ribs was for a half rack, or full rack. No salad bar? Sandwich was very good and surprisingly enjoyed the bun as well, it was fresh and lightly toasted. The sweet potato was tasty with the cinnamon butter. Just a heads up about the prime rib at this location. The piece I had on Saturday was definitely not prime and had little or no flavor. Ordered medium rare and got medium. Didn't bother to send it back because we had a big group and I didn't want to hold others up. It was grainy and dry so probably been around for a while. Others in our group were satisfied with their BBQ, so I'm recommending you stick with that. Their prices have really increased, so if you want a basic BBQ meal you are looking at over $20. They advertise 2 and 3 meat specials, but most of the selections other than chicken add $2-$3 to the price. read more

Last week I called in to ask if my order was received and a young lady took my name and number and told me the manager would give me a call back. I've heard Crickets. I am now having to go to another BBQ place for help 2 days before Thanksgiving..... I'm sorry, your customer service is terrible. I understand you might be busy. You have a catering site for orders and for your establishment not get back to anyone about the order is one thing. We have dined at Sonny's through Florida for years. The food is always great and prices fair. The only thing better than the awesome food was the service from Brittany. I decided to try the "build your own bowl"... pretty decent for the price I am disappointed that it was not warm when I got it. Also, the hot links seemed to be stale & were not warm. The links were not juicy at all. The texture is pretty consistent with what they'd taste like if they were left out in the fridge for days. Then warmed back up. Easter Sunday, there's not a place in town that's open. We're starving from a long drive across the state... when finally, we see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sonny's BBQ. We're seated immediately, and waited on with smiling faces and bunny ears. The boyfriend ordered the pulled chicken, garlic bread and BBQ baked beans. I had the steakburger and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese is the most cheesy, gooey beautiful side I've had in a long time. The burger was huge, and unfinishable for myself. This is the worst visit to a Sonny's in 16 years of living in Florida. The worst. I started out okay, withe the Server / bartender (check said her name was April) asking what we wanted to drink. We both drink water. I drink a lot of water. She took out order, brought us the order. She stop by a few seconds later and my wife asked her for cornbread that was warm enough to at least melt the butter. She the took the corn bread and came back with another. Colder than the first. We couldn't get her attention so I finally got the Managers attention and explained it was the second time we were asking for warm cornbread. During all that time we didn't see the server. Well I could see her chatting with a guy at the bar. I wanted more water, and she never came back. She delivered food to the table next to us and still didn't stop by our table even though I called out to her. I finally got more water when she brought the bill. TOTALLY UNSAT!!!! Our Party of Three all came for the unlimited Salad Bar. Our server Christian had us seated and with fresh drinks in less than five minutes. Salad Bar contains quality items that had us going back for seconds. Despite our limited order, Christian checked on us several times to insure we were happy with the Salad Bar and drinks. How do you describe a place you visit 3-5 times a month where you've just about tried everything on the menu? Every Sonny's is a little different. Some are in older buildings, some are in brand new buildings. The one is Zephyrhills is in a brand new building as of about a year ago. They even have a bar and make mixed drinks. We usually go on one of the weekend nights which tend to be quite busy. The winter season tends to be busier because snowbirds are in town but we are usually seated within 20 minutes. Once seated, the wait staff is ok with taking your food order with your drink order. A lot of people do this, because they know the menu and know what they want before entering the restaurant. The All-you-can-eat Classic Rub Ribs are an example of Sonny's really good BBQ. That is the special they are running right now. When you go, it might be a different plate. Also good is the BBQ 1/4 or 1/2 chicken. The pulled chicken is ok, the pulled pork is better, the sliced meats are usually good. The turkey is a deli meat round that has been smoked and the best is when they slice it thick so it is more like carved turkey. Sweet sauce is the best sauce but try them all. Sonny's offers a Big Salad - topped with nuts, dried cranberries and your choice of meat, quite the fancy salad for Sonny's. The lunch plate or Big Deal are economical choices and provide plenty to eat but if you like a lot of BBQ or want leftovers, get the dinner plate. You will need to pick some sides and choose between garlic bread or cornbread. Mac n' cheese and green beans are my favorite even though the green beans are usually overcooked. Don't forget the sweet tea! Vegetarians: Some nights they have a tomato basil soup. Ask to see if they have it. The Salad bar has options, not as many as Ruby Tuesdays, but the good thing is that it's rare to find poor produce in Sonny's salad bars. Soup plus salad bar or a side of mac n' cheese and some garlic bread or corn bread will get you through the evening at this BBQ restaurant. As for the BBQ, I did not grow up in a BBQ region so I do not have connoisseur genes. There are a few places that are better or have very unique BBQ flavors, but Sonny's is consistent and a great staple to add to your monthly (or weekly) diet. We keep going back. read more
