So for me this place gets a three bordering a two. We sat at the bar even though we had a reservation because they had an opening there. We are usually prefer sitting at the bar due to faster and better quality of service as well usually better conversation. As soon as we are walking downstairs the girl in the front counter saw was coming down and immediately removed the QR code menu for the window. Pretty much letting us know that they're closing down. We walked up to the window despite seen that, and we told her we have reservations and she told us we are not setting any more guests. We showed her the reservation and she said I'm sorry. We didn't bother calling a manager for the simple fact that they warned us about the poor service this restaurant has and when that happen we immediately remembered I should've listen to everyone's advice not to go. Beautiful location, and our food was delicious. They even gave us a complementary lava cake dessert for our 8th wedding anniversary. However our service was not top-notch for a $250 meal. Our server was not overly busy and yet she forgot my husbands drink. We waited until well after we were done with our meal for him to get the drink he had ordered about 15 to 20 minutes prior. We had also had a question in regards to our bill because there were two different bills reflecting two different charge amounts. When we questioned our waitress about it she did not really answer our question but was more concerned at the fact my husband wrote zero on the Tip line . She openly made a statement to us and said" just to let you know gratuities not included". I understand she was fearful that we were giving her no tip, however we just wrote zero in the gratuity spot because we had planned to give her cash. I was a waitress for 10 years and know that cash is preferred. She made the conclusion herself and made us feel awkward and less then. However we still gave her $70 tip. Oh, where to begin. On the lighter side, the service in terms of waiters was not bad at all. In fact, I would go as far as saying the service was actually quite good. Our experience didn't start to turn, until about an hour and a half after we ordered our meal. Yes, that's right, our food took over an hour and a half to come out. Once our glorified, stupidly overpriced, pathetically rationed food arrived, we were pretty unhappy lol. Disappointing meal for our party of 4. We ordered 2 bone-in rib eyes (each serves 2) one charred and one medium. They arrived on planks and were not sliced. Awkward to share across the small table as the only place to put them were between adjacent diners but the sharing couples were across from each other- which we had indicated to our waitress. When we asked to have them sliced, they reluctantly obliged. One rib eye was just ok, the other was full of fat and gristle. A third of it was inedible! The quality and the service were not worthy of the price. A shame since the setting had us anticipating a much better experience. read more

Fantastic dining experience and a perfect first dinner in Maui. Excellent food with great presentation. The staff was gracious, professional and fun. The restaurant is beautiful; we were there just after sunset. Was able to book same day reservations and managed to get them to sit us by the pond overlooking the ocean and it was filled with swans, ducks and flamingos. Nice waterfall, and it's just beautiful. We had the escargot, which was Parmesan cheesed the heck out, not a fan, filet mignon carpaccio which was great, calamari which was thickly breaded but was soft and not too chewy, and flavorful. We had the Escargot, be sure to pair it with the bread it provided, don't waste a last bit of the sauce; We also ordered the Calamari, it was most delicious; The HUGE Shrimp cocktails were excellent , presentation on this was top notch ( in a martini glass!! I feel bad for the servers to carry these out), the cocktail sauce was fantastic; Entrees all come in a la carte, pretty standard in fine dining establishments, we all had the filet ( 10oz), all prepared in PERFECTIon. The sides were fatastic, you've gotta try the Mushrooms / Maui onions! The concierge at our hotel helped pick out this place for dinner for us our first night in Maui. Although the menu was fairly standard steakhouse fare, everything was executed well. I had the shrimp cocktail and 10 oz filet mignon. Someone ordered a side of the grilled asparagus for the table. The shrimp cocktail wasn't particularly exciting, but the filet was cooked nicely to what I specified (medium rare) and was tender and not gristly whatsoever. I was also delighted to discover they had EH Taylor Small Batch bourbon on the menu for a reasonable price. It's my go-to bourbon, but it has been hard to find it at restaurants, bars, and even liquor stores back at home in Portland. Service was attentive and kept our glasses full. The drinks are amazing I had a lemon drop and my friend had a cosmo. The bread and butter they bring out are just so delicious. I had the lobster tail which was so tasty and full of flavor, we got the potatoes and asparagus for sides. My friend got the filet and it was tender and cooked to perfection. Loved the walk down the stairs and the beautiful open view of the Swan pond. Stunning. Def top 3 of the best restaurant views (Roy's in Hawaii Kai at Sunset is pretty awesome as well). Lamb was delicious! Very tasty, well salted, nice presentation. Asparagus was a bit over cooked and about as thick as a small straw. They need to get better produce. I didn't have any of the lava cake dessert, but the fam said it was out of this world. My one complaint would be that the weather was a bit warm and due to the open air view, there is no air conditioning. I guess this is the price you pay for an awesome view. read more

I have some nice things to say about this restaurant, and I don't want this review to get slammed for being purely negative. THE FOOD (cont.) Entrées arrived at the table. The look of the steaks (served a la carte) was simple enough--a piece of steak atop a manicured strip of banana leaf, on a clean white plate. At this point, the lighting failed me BIG time, so I stopped taking photos. Sorry folks. - Prime New York Steak, requested medium-rare, was seasoned perfectly, however, it was cooked rare. Since the lighting sucked, it was hard to show the botched cooking job, but working closely with cooks, myself, I can assure you, it was NOT med-rare. Something to think about if you're toting some kids along. - Asparagus side was over-cooked and was borderline limp. The actual mushrooms and onions were cooked correctly, but the flavor of the two veggies themselves didn't shine nearly as much as the sauce that accompanied it. I don't know what it was... Maybe a red-wine mushroom demi, but it was SO good that I wiped my steak in it. Über good sauce with those 'shrooms, I tell ya. - Again.... The Seafood Cakes never arrived. THE ROYAL SCREW-UP. So, you're wondering: What was the big debacle that blew the whole deal? Let's begin... Shane delivered the check mentioning, "I've added an 18% gratuity, as you're a party of six or over." We acknowledged the message and opened the check. To a bill of $400, this dude left himself six dollars and change. Think about that. $6 on a $400 check. You servers out there are already having yourselves a laugh, but seriously, that's less than TWO percent of the check. What a spectacular piece of self-sabotage. We kindly corrected the value to reflect 18% of the bill. He lucked out. I watched a member of our party place a dark gray credit card down. As we were leaving the hotel, I realized that I hadn't validated my parking ticket. My sister's bf realized the same thing and we went back to the restaurant to get our respective tickets stamped. The lady that forgot my cherries (see last review) caught us and mentioned that we had not paid and asked if we had brought the credit card with us. My sister's fella and I exchanged a look of "Are-You-Forking-Serious?!?" with one another. So, I ran, again, through the hotel to retrieve the credit card from another member of our party. I ran back to the restaurant. The cherry lady said, "I'll go ahead and run this. Shane was a little confused tonight." "Yeah, Shane was A LOTTA confused tonight!" The comment took her off guard and she went ahead and ran the bill. The two other girls at the hostess stand validated the parking tickets. When I got the check back, I debated whether or not to leave that generous tip for Shane. Ethical behavior and conscience got the best of me, so I did. When I handed the final, signed bill back, cherry lady said, "You mentioned Shane was rather confused tonight. Anything you'd like to elaborate on?" I held it together and barely was able to get the words, "No.... Not right now," before turning to leave. I will NOT be coming back. And it's truly a heart-breaking thing. You have this AMAZING setting, this HORRIBLE service, and people who can't seem to properly cook a steak... at a steakhouse. I'm hoping this was an anomaly and some food-writer friend of mine RAVES about the meal and the service. Until then, I'll be telling my friends to go elsewhere. P.S. If you're half-decent with customer service and you screw up THIS big, have the sense to place a follow-up call the next day and apologize. What is it about vacations that make me generous with the yelp stars? We visited this restaurant located in the Hyatt in Maui for a family wedding, so I can't speak of the prices and our selections were fairly structured, but it didn't take away from a lovely dining experience. The restaurant is gorgeous. In a setting like Maui, how could it be anything else? Sure, the natural beauty of the islands sets the decor for this restaurant, but it's the man made swan pond with a waterfall in the background that makes even more spectacular. Our appetizers were tomato and mushroom brushcettas, goat cheese ravioli, and pancetta wrapped prawns all of which were good, except the prawns which were great. The salad was meh and was skipped by most. I chose the lemon picatta halibut and my hb had the steak Diane. Every single person at our table that orderedf the halibut had a plate so clean, they probably could've skipped washing them. The halibut was cooked to perfection and served atop a sweet potato hash with a lemon caper butter sauce. Enough said. The steak Diane was ok, but the sauce was a bit on the sweet side, which I'm not a fan of. Dessert was a bananas foster bread pudding and it was the perfect ending to a perfect dinner. I had a horrible stay at this hotel which I won't get into because the hotel is trying to make amends for and it has nothing to do with this restaurant. I bring up my issue only in order to say how much our dinner at Sonz really helped to make the stay better. The food was amazing. The waiters were attentive. I had my toddler with me and they treated us all wonderfully instead of being appalled that a 1.5 year old was with us. The children's menu was great too. My daughter had teriyaki beef bites and got really mad at me for not cutting up her food faster because she found it so delicious (note that for an older kid, the bites would be a perfect size, I only cut them smaller because she is so young). As for my mom and I, we started off with the blackened ahi appetizer after it was recommended by our waiter and it was superb. We were clearly not very sneaky about trying to grab as much sauce as we could off the plate because the waiters brought a dipping cup full of that sauce so we could enjoy it with our entree. I ordered the filet mignon and my mom ordered the lobster tail and both were cooked and prepared perfectly. Since the entrees are a la cart we also ordered the creamed spinach and the mashed sweet potatoes. They were both delicious as well although the portions were so big that we only finished half of each. Unfortunately since I have a cold I couldn't partake of the drink menu, but my mom ordered a glass of the house cab and thought it was one of the best cabs she ever had. I read reviews where people complain about the price, and yes it was pricy, but it's a resort restaurant in Hawaii - maybe I'm accustomed to gouging prices since I live in Honolulu but you get what you paid for, a delicious meal in a great ambiance with attentive waitstaff. read more

Atmosphere is awesome. Love the swans and ducks swimming by us, but that's about it. Oh wait, the fries were good. They definitely don't know how to cook steaks. Hubby and I both got our steaks under cooked. He also requested medium rare plus, but they said they can't do that? Okay steakhouse. His steak was a little more rare than he liked, ate it anyway. Being pregnant I requested medium and it came out completely rare. Maybe medium rare I would've let go. They had to take it back to re cook of course in pieces so by the time it came back out to me the steak was super tough and husband was practically done with his meal.
