The atmosphere of the swans in a lagoon setting drew us in for dinner on our 30th wedding anniversary. The service was wonderful, they were friendly and attentive. The meal was one of the worst we have had at an establishment like this. The calamari was over cooked and barely warm, the cocktail sauce was ketchup and the "chef's catch of the day" was bland with sides that were forgettable. The bottle of wine we bought was the best part of the meal And the surprise mango sorbet for our anniversary. Our other choice for such a special event was also located in the Hyatt Regency Maui....we should have gone there. read more

After making a reservation online weeks ago for a nye family dinner, we show up with our two young adults (13-17), to be greeted by "it's a pre fixed menu, and it's $120/person." Not a good evening, not a welcome, just a bomb dropped. Now let me clear, I have no problem with the pre fixed menu, OR the cost. I DO have a problem with the fact that we were never notified in any way that this was the case, and I have an even bigger problem with the way it was presented to us when we arrived. It really felt like they were trying to screw us by surprise!! So now it's after 7pm on NYE and we have to try and figure out dinner in Kaanapali, not an easy task. If I had my way I'd have thrown a big ol FU contest at the manager, but we just left and dealt with it. We ended up getting lucky and getting a table at Japango, and had a wonderful meal with great service. Screw this crappy hotel steakhouse, and it's piss poor management and policies. Word to the wise, don't assume it's just a regular restaurant if it's the holidays, they will try and make more profit, even if it takes force. Incredible service from the staff. We ordered the filet mignon, lobster tail (6 ounce), garlic mashed potatoes, Caesar salad, and French fries. My husband loved the lobster tail and we both loved the filet which was prepared perfectly for each of our preferences. The garlic mashed potatoes and Caesar salad were huge and I was great full for the recommendation to share. So delicious! And honestly the French fries were the BEST I have ever tasted - no joke. I ordered the 2014 Merlot and it was incredibly smooth. We ended up getting the lava cake and ice cream for dessert and it was absolutely incredible and we aren't even dessert people typically. Highly recommended! It was fun getting dressed up for dinner with my husband. My only tip is to watch the sunset before dinner because the way the restaurant is situated blocks the view of the sunset, but you get a lovely view of swans and flamingos and ducks passing you by throughout dinner. read more

So the place is very pretty. It is inside the Hyatt. The servers were very nice. However, for such an expensive place there is a lot to improve on. First, seated at a table half in the sun, half out. Place was fairly empty upon arrival with plenty of tables shielded from the sun. So, I had to roast for most of the meal. Refills were slow. Ordered. Apparently there was some sort of glitch where my steak didn't get prepared. Ok. But they told me this after they brought my wife's and the sides. They were very apologetic but still took a bunch of time. By the time it came wife was done and sides were cold. Plus, steak was clearly cooked fast and not well prepared at all. Added bonus, the Hyatts card machine wasn't working so the only way to get out was to pay the lost ticket price. So, ya. They gave me a discount but that was spent on parking. Simply not good! For the high prices that they are charging ($55 for an 8oz steak) you would expect for the meat to be tender and moist, it was neither. We ordered the fish that was the special of the day, when it arrived it was a complete disappointment (even though it was highly recommend by our server). The dish did not look very appetizing to say the least, it was a messy dish, full of sauce on top of the fish which was on top of mashed potatoes which was on top of hearts of palm and capers...and it just did not taste good at all. The only thing that was kinda good was the garlic mashed potatoes, everything else was simply not good. What a beautiful dining experience! We're still dreaming of the ambiance, service and the incredible lobster ravioli, fish and steak. Walking down the stairs to this pond-side restaurant, swans swimming by and birds chirping in the trees, made us feel we were transported to another time. The service -- thank you General Manger Amy, wait staff Ashley and Ray -- was 5 Star. And the food...just delicious. Whatever you order, please add the lobster ravioli. It's uniquely incredible. RAT RAT RAT!!!! Went there for our 25th anniversary dinner and we see a rat run under our table and around the restaurant. We bring it to the attention of the manager and she says "we can move you"...if a rat is in the restaurant where are you going to move me to? The explanation they gave was that because it has a lagoon the rats can come in. No offer to comp a portion of the meal or anything, just a "sorry about the rat" that scurried around your feet at dinner. They told us it was a Hyatt issue. We spoke to the manager of the Hyatt who said it's a Son'z issue. Clearly NO ONE cares that a restaurant has rats running around under their customer's feet during dinner! If there are rats in the dining room, what about the kitchen?!?! Not likely to be going back EVER! Maybe a visit from the health department will help them assess the issue? read more

Service is absolutely terrible. We waited over a half hour for our drinks and for bread and butter to be served and then an hour for our food. No one checked on us aside from delivering the said drinks & bread (we had to get up from the table to ask someone to refill our water). When our filets finally came, (we ordered medium) they were so undercooked-rare, it was difficult to eat and dare we send it back to wait another hour for it to be corrected. After all was said and done the manager came to our table and offered absolutely nothing to us and we still had a $200 bill. This was my first time at Son'z, and I was not disappointed. Our server, Ashley, was very attentive as well as the manager, Amy, to our table of 6. Very disappointing. Although is was not too busy the service was terrible. Way over priced for what you get. Advertised as "fine dining" actually more like Outback Steakhouse. We ate there several years ago and at that time both the quality of the food and service were very good, no longer. Poor quality drinks, not sure if the alcohol was cheap or the bartender didn't know how to make a margarita, a mojito or a champagne cocktail. We were celebrating a birthday, it was on the reservation, mentioned when we checked in and mentioned to the waiter. No acknowledgment. Walked by Hyatt and this restaurant several times. Last day of our honeymoon we decide to grab drinks and cocktails during their happy hour. We were totally ignored by our server. When we did place the order she didn't acknowledge the order or write anything down just walked away. After some time we asked where drinks and food was and she said she forgot because she didn't write anything down. We then asked for check. This request was also ignored. I am a steak guy for sure as is my family. I read the reviews and went into it expecting mediocre at best food, maybe a cool steak, good not warm, etc. well I was pleasantly surprised! My wife and sons all ordered the filet mignon, and I ordered my trusty standby NY Strip. The steaks all came out great with a nice melted butter on top and perfectly salted. All cooked as requested, all very good. Sides we got grilled asparagus, loaded potato, and bacon Mac and Cheese. All as good as you can expect. I tried a bit of the bacon Mac and cheese and it was good but not great. We were the last seating and the server was incredibly nice. She was a teacher filling in for her friends who run the restaurant due to a shortage if help. Keep in mind after COVID hit, 9,000 workers left Maui, which is why restaurants are struggling to keep up. It was a 2 hour dinner but sitting by the pond feeling the island breeze made it great. So let's have some sympathy for the poor servers and restaurants. Also, is it expensive? Yes, but it's Hawaii. Nothing is cheap in Hawaii. If people complain about price, eat elsewhere. It's a Ruth Chris type place and same pricing, so you should know going in it's at least a $400-500 dinner. All in all, I encourage people to go there. The reviews of all the bad meals may be valid, but for our experience and considering we were lucky to get a table with the crowds here, it was good enough that I would go again. Stopped in for dinner a little over a week ago. Food was pretty good. Paid with my credit card. No problems. Got the receipt. Left a tip. Said goodnight. About an hour later I get a text saying that the charge didn't go through (it did - I can see it on my phone) and if I could please stop by and bring my card so they could run it again, that would be great. So I give them my card number over the phone and they process a 2nd transaction. A few days later, BOTH transactions clear. So I contact them back. They assure me they will fix the situation. A few more days go by. Nothing. I contact them AGAIN. They once again assure me it will be taken care of. Nothing. It has now been TEN DAYS since I had dinner there and I have not received my refund. I own a business that processes credit cards. I know a refund takes all of about 30 seconds to process. Either something fishy is going on, or management just doesn't care. So, since I now have to waste half an hour of my life to call my credit card company to process a CHARGEBACK, they are getting a negative review. I hope this prevents the same thing from happening to other people. read more

Not much of a selection of veggies on the sides menu. Only asparagus, green means, and creamed corn. Being allergic to green beans, this hindered my options. Tonight my husband had a terrific dinner reserved after a great day of activity with friends. He had been looking forward to "the Tomahawk" after reviews of the restaurant. We were greeted, and the person acknowledged that we were celebrating our 19th anniversary. All started well, we ordered drinks, appetizer, and our meals. The waitress was lovely, but I did ask her to take a picture of our dinner party of 4... that never happened. When our meals were brought out, my husband's $125 steak was presented to him as medium-well to well done; not medium rare as requested. The steak was taken away and brought back to him with the steak cut in half and the chef messaging via the waitress that it is medium closer to the bone, just more well on the "edges", which was still a considerably large amount of overcooked meat. He decided to return it, as it is a $125 plate, not cooked to order, and was disected not in his presence and wasn't really allowed to look at rest of the steak himself - it was kind of shoved in his face. The next steak came out, (after the others in our party completely finished their meal) those of you in the steak know will already know - it was served rare. The hostess/ maybe manager came to check on him. He stated it was rare and inedible. She offered to put "heat to it". So, this is a premier steakhouse that is completely unaware that when you try to reheat any cut of meat that has been undercook, you are really creating a very tough piece of meat. Also not $125 worth. We never saw the hostess/ manager again. The waitress became rude and unattentive, because my husband pointed out that we ( I was going to share some of this steak) would have nothing for dinner. My last straw was when she brought the receipt for the other couple in our party she thanked them specifically and told them to have a good evening. My husband is completely upset. This is a common steak house with a nice view masquerading as a premier steak house with staff that sink to common server tactics. Don't bother. Our original reservations were at 7pm. We had saw on the app that there were reservations open for 630 so we decided to go early and see if we can sit down at an earlier time. As soon as we got to the desk the manager Amy was rude to begin with no only did she give us attitude but she point to the bar saying we could sit there if we wanted. We could see multiple tables open where we could sit. Eventually it hit 7pm we went back to the tables and saw multiple tables open by the water we asked the manager AGAIN if we can sit down and she told us they had 195 reservations that it was not guaranteed. We waited another 20 mins and finally sat down and the restaurant was EMPTY. She also made a comment to the host telling them to not sit us at the table we wanted and saying "you can handle them" we felt discriminated and disrespected especially since it was from the manager. Don't not come here. Trust the reviews when they say their customer service is horrible. Also they need to fire amy at this point. read more

We went to Sonz steakhouse for our anniversary while in Maui. We both ordered 6 oz. filet mignons. I specifically asked our server (Kaitlyn) how to order it with pink in the middle. She assured me "Med well" even though I questioned her twice. Well, the steak came and it was cooked throughout with NO pink. To make matters worse. the steak was about half the size of my husbands. She said it was because it was cooked more. Yeah right. They agreed to cook a new one but by the time it arrived, my husband had eaten his entire meal & I ate the asparagus. Take the steak back. I wasn't going to pay $45 for a steak that would now be dessert & eat it all by itself. I was totally bummed. The manager stopped by & said there would be no corkage for the $250 bottle of wine that we brought. Geez, thanks. Sonz was okay but not worth the hefty price. We ordered the 10 oz filet MEd-Rare, only to receive a well done filet. We both work in restaurants so sending back the steak was out of the question. The Caesar was okay. Not sure what the piece of bread with park was, but it was stale. The carrots that came with the short rib were inconsistent. One of the carrots wasn't even cooked!! Dinner Review: Since we are staying at the Hyatt, we decided to spend our first night at the Sonz restaurant to see if we loved it enough to want to come back later in the trip since its easy for us to go. Overall, I liked it. Service was interesting. It appeared that out waiter was waiting in half of the restaurant. It took a while to have anyone start to help us, but overall it was good. There were a couple, dare I say, sexist moments! When our waiter brought over the wine menu, I discussed the wine, and I selected the wine, and my husband had 0 input because I know what he likes and I picked something we would both like. When the waiter brought the bottle over for tasting, he poured it in my husbands glass! I picked the wine, I orded the wine, I am supposed to get the tasting of the wine. That was awkward. And then later, I ordered a meal with steak for dinner, cause steak rules, and my husband did not. When someone brought out the steak knife, they did not know, or ask, who ordered the steak, they just brought it to my husband assuming he was the steak eater. Small things, but awkwardly sexist honestly. The atmosphere is perfect. I loved looking out at the waterfall and the swans. It was very beautiful. As far as the food goes, we both started out with the Caesar salad and we both agreed that it was the BEST Caesar salad either of us have ever had in our entire lives. You must get this salad if you go here. Seriously. It had some cheese and balsamic vinegar on it that we're just to die for. I had high hopes for our entrees after the amazing salad, but they were not as good as the salad. I had the mixed grill which consisted of a petite filet, lobster tail, risotto, and asparagus. The filet wasn't good. Petite filets are still supposed t be cut a certain way so that they are thick. This was an extremely thin filet, and even though I ordered it medium rare, there would have been no way to serve it that way since it was so thin. It was more like medium well. The risotto was fantastic, well cooked. Asparagus the same. Lobster was good, but I've had better. Overall good entree but not great. My husband had the cheese ravioli, he didn't love it but said it was decent. For dessert we had the Portuguese French toast because it came with bananas foster and I LOVE bananas foster. It was really good, obviously doesn't even compare to the greatness of the bananas foster at Brennan's, but it was still very good. Overall, generally good food, weird service, we will prob try it again. Breakfast Review: Our package at the Hyatt includes free breakfast at the Son'z every morning, so we decided to give it a try. Apparently everyone at the Hyatt had the same idea - the restaurant is way too small for the amount of guests. But the weirdest problem was the wait. So, unlike every other restaurant I have ever been to, rather than getting people up to the hostess stand, taking their name, and having them wait off to the side until their table was ready, the way that they have decided to operate it is have everyone stand in a long line leading to the hostess stand until the next table is ready when they take your name and sit you down. I found that extremely odd and annoying. The line kept growing, it was so weird. After we finally got seated, about 15 minutes after we originally got in line, we went and got food. While waiting, I saw some people with delicious looking waffles and I was so excited about trying one. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. They were out of waffles by the time I went to go get food. Instead I had some rice, scrambled eggs, and a croissant. It was good, nothing amazing or anything, but good enough for a breakfast buffet. I could not have asked for a better place to have dinner on our first night in Maui. The night was magical and will always have a fond place in my heart. We were staying at the Hyatt, where the restaurant is located, and given the best table in the house. It was right by the water and we enjoyed watching the swans swim by while sipping champagne. Be sure to make your reservations right before sunset so that you can enjoy the beautiful view. It was breathtaking to watch the same scenery go from daylight to dark. The service was amazing and they did not rush us - simply let us enjoy our night. The price tag is expensive but completely worth it. The filet was one of the best I have had and so was the gigantic shrimp cocktail. I also loved that a lady (not employed by the restaurant) came by with leis. The Hyatt has a much better restaurant than the other Resorts. This is NOT to include the non-resort dining options. We arrived around 4 pm and the dining area was nearly empty; we were early. That's not a problem because the bar was open. You had the option of sitting at the bar or tables on the lower level. We, my wife and I, selected a table. We ordered a double bourbon for myself and an ice tea (non-alcoholic version NOT from Long Island) (lol). The service was fast and courteous. The bartender (mixologist) was a true credit to his chosen profession. He could make a piña colada to-die-for as well as very generous pours of bourbon to his credit. There was a man who played requested songs and a preset ensemble of casual music near us. I tipped him and selected some nice songs I had in mind. He joined us when it was break time and we had a wonderful conversation. I offered him a drink though he kindly declined because, as he stated, he had been "sober for a few years now and was very happy about it". An inspiration to me... I too need to quit. We were going to stay for dinner, though I had $200 in Roy's of Ka'anapali gift cards from my credit card company burning a hold in my wallet, so at this point, we received the check. To our surprise it was around $20. I was shocked. We tipped generously and were on our way. I recommend the Hyatt "Son'z Steakhouse" to everyone reading this review. Come for the happy hour and stay for the steaks. I hear they are superbe. I promise this here and now: the next time we go to Maui in February (staying at the Ritz further up the road, though will still come) we will partake in the Steaks they offer. No alcoholic beverages to detract from the meal's flavors and beautiful sunset's. Call your Resort in advance of your arrival. One week at the least and make your reservation 1 hour BEFORE sunset. Ate here for both breakfast and dinner and had a similar takeaway from each meal...underwhelming The Good: The staff is very friendly and professional. The location with the swans is very cool and unique. The staff is aware of this and seems to try and sit people in the best viewing locations available (at least in my experience). The backdrop with the waterfall and flamingos is very nice as well. The Bad: Beyond the swans and staff, I found very little value with Son'z. I know I'm on vacation in Maui and things are going to be more expensive, which I'm fine as long as I can see a reason for the higher price. Son'z has the appearance and price tag of a 5-star restaurant, but the experience is more of a 3-star restaurant. Breakfast buffet is $25/pp which includes coffee and juice..so about $60 for two people with tax and tip. I know some people rave about this buffet, but I have a sneaky suspicion that the people who truly love it are the people who have it included in their room rate and don't actually see the bill every time they eat here. Everything was really good, but it bothered me that at $25/pp, the only fresh fruit they offered was pineapple, papaya and cantaloupe just cut up and spread on a plate. Not even bananas?! Even the Hampton inn breakfast buffet has bananas! All of the eggs, bacon pancakes were really good, I just feel at that price, it wasn't much better than say a Courtyard Marriott. Not to mention, you will see flocks of birds attacking empty tables for food (a casualty of the open air concept). Dinner was sadly underwhelming as well. If you've ever eaten at a mediocre restaurant that was trying to be high class, that is what dinner at Son'z is like. It looks like a high end place and the high prices indicate that as well, but the execution doesn't match the price tag. For example, we were given bread once the server took our order (pretty standard) however the bread was ice cold and the rolls were clearly factory produced. My wife got the filet mignon meatballs which were excellent, but my fish meal was cold and the fish quite frankly didn't taste great. The bill for the two of us came out to $130 with us each getting one drink, so by no means a cheap meal. Again, the whole experience was simply underwhelming, minus the staff which again was great. Son'z is super convenient if you're staying at the Hyatt and if you can get the buffet free with your room I highly recommend it. However, if you have to pay to eat there, I would try your luck with another restaurant. read more

Wowsers. This was a great meal. Totally enjoyed our dishes! The service was attentive without being too intrusive, and the open air view was wonderful. Our two year old is still yammering on about the waterfall! Fresh fish to die for...you'll find top notch food here! The tables are far enough from each other that you'll feel like you don't have to talk too loud to be heard or lean over too far to hear what's been said. It's romantic...esp with the waterfall, the moon, and awwwwww. Knowledgeable wait staff that is patient with walking you through the menu.
