I have been going here since it has opened and really enjoyed the freshness and originality . Last night for my birthday we decided to carry out. It was expectantly crowded for a Saturday night and we didn't mind at all that our order was delayed. However, we only live over the hill and our dinner was cold. It was also tasteless. We all commented that it was less than mediocre. We were so very disappointed. It may have been due to a crowded weekend but nothing was flavorful or special. Visited Sopapilla's for my son's birthday. We arrived early around 11 am on a Sunday and was able to get a table after about a 10 minute wait. The biggest negative of this visit was the length of time before the server came to our table, but once we had menus, the rest of the service moved pretty quick, esp, given how busy they were. I regret not taking pictures, but we ordered guacamole for the table, which was fantastic, then I ordered their Huevos Rancheros, which was unique, authentic, and fantastic! Here's the description from their website: "Flour tortilla, eggs, pico, frijoles, fried potatoes, avocado, melted queso, with red or green sauce". Yum! I ordered with the green sauce as I like a bit more spice. At first, I didn't think it would be much to eat, but I was full by the time I finished it (plus chips and guac, of course!) I've been here twice now (once for lunch and once for dinner) and I find the food to be really good. The salsa is spicy and fresh which is usually a good indicator of what kind of Mexican food you're about to eat. I love the tacos and the refried beans they have here. My husband had the queso which he said was mediocre, kind of runny, not as thick as he likes. Service this past time was also kinda spotty as our waitress disappeared for long periods of time. The free dessert is a nice touch. This is a quality spot for higher class Mexican fare in the area. As others mention, the music is unnecessarily loud for some reason. This was an unexpected find. We had a mix of orders from the menu and Sunday brunch buffet. Everything was amazing. The brunch had a nice variety of upscale Mexican food, breakfast items and dessert. Plus, bottomless mimosas for $6 make the buffet totally worth it. We will be back for sure! read more

I am so glad we found this little gem. Its part of Cool Springs only eat, shop, live concepts. There are cute little condos and apartments around the restaurant. As well as other shops and things. This place has a really nice patio area with cute lights and the indoor decor is also nice. They played the most random music the night I was there. It would go from Ariana Grande, to Billy Currington to Kanye. I loved it. We got a pitcher of cucumber margaritas. They were very refreshing and had chunks of cucumbers floating around in them. At first I thought that was a little odd, but it worked strangely. The waiter said that the cucumber marg was their most popular drink after a regular marg. The pitcher isn't on the menu, and it was about $40. There were four of us and we each had about 1.5 margs each. The chips and salsa are good. TIP - check in on yelp and you'll get free queso! I had the steak street tacos and they were delicious. The serving sizes were a little small, but overall it was a great place! OH! They also give everyone at the table free sopapillas with honey! Once again, I am not disappointed by a Mexican Restaurant. Sopapilla's is a real winner in Franklin, Tennessee. First off, the margaritas are great. It is few and far in between where you can find a place that makes a good house margarita. I hate it when a drink tastes of fake mix. The drinks here are fresh and good. The food is great. I love the salsa. I like my salsa spicy, so I was a fan. The chips were consistently hot and fresh. I got the street tacos. This is a great option for those who do not want a huge meal. The price of $13 is a little high in my book for 3 tiny tacos, but it is what I wanted at the time. My father's huevos rancheros were very good. That dish is his favorite. The service was a tad rocky. We never got our 2nd margarita, but the server did take it off of our tab. She was new and maybe a little overwhelmed. I've been agonizing over the last week on two or three stars for this restaurant. On one hand the owner is obviously interested in making it succeed. On the other the food has problems that need to be worked out. I had real problems with several items on the menu. First is the 3 dip sampler tray. You get cheese, guacamole and bean dip. The cheese dip had way too much velveeta processed cheese in it and definitely tasted like it. The bean dip was refried beans with some of the cheese dip on top of it. Really? Thats it? Beans with a bit of cheese on top? Couldn't find the time to put something with flavor in the beans? sautéed onions? Nothing? My wife had the stuffed sopapilla. It was well cooked but the sauce in it had an odd flavor that seemed a bit off. Her first reaction was very negative, in fact the face she made was funny. She never did finish the dish because of the odd flavor but did compliment the cooking of the chicken within the dish. When I asked the waitress to suggest something to wow me she suggested that I try the grilled shrimp quesadilla. It had a lovely flavor in the areas where there was filling. It came with a jalapeno sauce on the side that tasted nothing like jalapeno but cucumber instead. The big problem was the fact that it was all quesadilla shell but no filling. I mean it was really empty, just the middle was filled. I'm sure how it made it out of the kitchen. Just an added note here. Guacamole only comes on two dishes, they charge extra if you want it on anything else. I am a big fan of good guacamole and being told that it's gotten expensive because we use Hass avocados isn't impressing me. Everybody uses Hass avocados . On a high note the Sopapilla desert they bring out to everyone is fantastic. It had a lovely flavor and had a delightful texture. I was wondering if they shouldn't just serve mexican pastries and coffee instead. At this point I started taking notes for this review and the owner showed up to ask how we were doing. I was able to tell him about a few of my issues and he thanked us for our thoughts. When I asked for our check we were asked to wait a moment to talk with the owner again. He agreed with our assessment of the cheese-dip and the lack of filling on my dish but not with our assessment of the bean dip. He brought out a reworked sample of the shrimp dish that was much improved with added corn and other fillings. It was a successful pairing to fill out the dish. Will it make the menu? He did say there was a new head chef that should get the kitchen working well. I certainly hope so because the current cost per plate is too high for what you receive. read more

To me, a few things point to the quality of a Mexican-style restaurant: the salsa, the rice, and the beans. In most places, the rice is a generic Mexican-style rice, the beans taste like slop from a can, and the salsa tastes like ketchup with a few peppers thrown in. At Sopapilla's, the salsa is fresh with quite a bit of heat and flavor. The beans actually look like beans, black beans cooked perfectly. And the rice is white, well-cooked, with hints of butter. I went with my mom, dad, husband, and brother on a Sunday evening. Our waiter was great: very personable and friendly. He did not hesitate to bring us more salsa or chips, especially since it took a while to get our food. In fact, it took so long, that he offered to bring us another round of margaritas on him. The house margaritas on-the-rocks were a little sweet but actually tasted like lime. For $7, I would've appreciated a larger portion. Our free margaritas were the frozen strawberry kind, also a little sweet for my taste but still quite tasty. I ordered the stuffed sopapilla: a sopapilla stuffed with slow-roasted chicken in a Hatch chile sauce and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream. I could've stood for it to be a little hotter. My husband's chile relleno combo was also delicious. The portions are not enormous, which is nice, and the prices for entrees are reasonable, about $8-12. Given the quality of the food, I was impressed. We finished with the complimentary sopapillas, fluffy and buttery, that came with squeeze bottles of honey. Seeing as we only had to wait about 5 minutes as opposed to the several hour wait that normally accompanies visits to Chuy's, I will be visiting here more frequently. read more

I was really excited about the atmosphere. That was quickly erased by the service. The salsa was pretty good. We ordered queso which came pretty quick along with some yummy margaritas. The service went downhill from there. Our order was taken and the food came very slow. My husband is allergic to shellfish and asked for all meat entree. We made it clear that he was allergic since part of his entree usually comes with shrimp. We were assured it was not a problem. The 1st bite was shrimp. We didn't get an appology or visit fromthe manager. A simple apology would have Bern greatly appreciated. Food was just OK, service was horrible. Sopapilla's has become the go to for mexican food for our family in Williamson County. Being a transplant from CA it has been very difficult to find great mexican food since moving to Nashville 9 years ago, but Sopapilla's easily fills the gap. I really don't understand the rave about this place and why its so busy. I live in the apartments in the same complex so I have only returned to Sopapillas out of convenience and their drink specials if i really want to go to a bar but don't feel like driving anywhere. To start, they give you chips and salsa to start and the salsa is good and has a kick to it but I swear the oils they cook the chips in or something is just off because I always feel sick after eating them....even if its just a handful. If you check in with Yelp you get a free cup of queso but don't get too excited because its really just glorified velveeta and once it cools down its super rubbery. The margaritas are pre-mixed and SUPER sugary which was a huge disappointment since they feature margaritas on their menu like its a specialty. If you want something made fresh that you can actually taste tequila you have to order something more expensive than the regular margarita. Don't get the sangria, its a waste of money and calories. The first time i ordered food i got the enchiladas which came in three different flavors and all three were not good. Some stuff was too spicey, other stuff was just bland and mushy.. I think i left half my plate just because I didn't like the taste of anything. The fire roasted quesadillas are pretty decent...very large portion and the ingrediants are all very fresh and they don't add any extra sauces so its just the meat, cheese, red/green peppers, and onions... I liked everything about them but again for the price (and sometimes the wait for a table) they just aren't enough to make the restaurant any good. read more

Fortunately, I took the lazy route and made reservations in advance; however, we still had to wait about 10 minutes because they were running behind at 6:45 p.m. I was super excited about the complimentary valet. It always makes me feel so swanky! Cocktails-I ordered the white wine sangria which came peachy and opaque in a traditional wine glass with an orange. It was delicious! Checking in on Yelp rendered me an order of free queso with our chips and salsa. Both were flavorful. You can't beat free! The chips were endless! The best part of our visit was the service. Our server was stellar. He was constantly filling our glasses of water because the salsa was hot, man! I went vegetarian and ordered the tacos. They came on two homemade corn tortillas with black beans and arroz on the side. Our table sat and chatted for awhile and at one point our stellar server brought us two fresh sopapillas for FREE! My coworker friend needs a gluten free menu so this is one of our lunch spots when we are in the area. They offer a separate gluten free menu so she can have a great lunch. I've also dined here for lunch with my husband. The meal starts with chips and salsa like most Mexican restaurants. The chips are usually very good. I've only had a stale batch once. I've also ordered the guacamole and the chile con queso to go with the chips and like them so much that it's hard to decide sometimes. For entrees I've had the chile poblano and stuffed sopapilla. It is hard to say which is my favorite. The chile poblano is slow roasted chicken with poblano pepper, rice and black bean corn relish. The stuffed sopapilla is slow roasted chicken in a pastry shell. They are both very delicious. I would recommend reservations. It is a pretty big restaurant and we've been lucky at lunch but I bet it is much harder to get a table for dinner. The service is usually great. There was one day it took us an hour and half and couldn't wait any longer on the dessert sopapilla. read more

Went last night and really enjoyed my experience there. The queso and table side guacamole are great ways to start the meal. Delicious, spicy salsa as well. I got the pollo burrito and it was really tasty. Black beans were a great compliment as a side. My wife got the santa fe chicken salad which is exactly what it sounds like. corn, beans, onions, tort strips, etc. This brings me to my two minor complaints. 1. The salad dressing choices are no good. My wifey tried all 3 and settled reluctantly on the spicy ranch. 2. The only hot sauce they have is Tabasco sauce. Throw me a bone and give me some Tapatio or Cholula or don't carry any at all. Tabasco is bloody mary's only. For dessert, they bring out hot sopapillas. GREAT way to end the meal. After my first review I received an email from the owner asking me to give them another try since my first visit was during the soft opening and she offered to pay for my meal if I didn't like it this time. As I was driving home today I passed by and decided to give it that second try. This was a different experience by far. The waitress asked did I want an appetizer and she said they had really good guacamole which sounded good but then it hit her that it was a really large bowl so she offered to see ifshe could get me a side. The side was a nice portion and only $1. She was right. This was a very good guacamole. The salsa was better this time. The flavor was better balanced and it had a pretty darn good kick to it. I ate almost a whole basket of chips with the guacamole and salsa. I ordered the chili rellano with a shredded beef taco. The chili rellano did appear to be a Hatch chile and had the flavor and heat it should have. It was good but the montery jack cheese filling was not very melted so I missed that gooey goodness from the oozing cheese. The shredded beef taco was good. I tasted the meat by itself and it was nicely seasoned with a little kick. However, there wasn't a lot of beef and there was a lot of lettuce. The rice was okay. This time I tried the black beans and they really were good but the serving size was small. Even the sopapilla that was served at the end of the meal was better prepared this time. It was cooked a little longer so that it had a slight crispness to it. The food was much better this time but I am not sure I can go to a full 4 stars yet. The food was a little slow coming to the table and they had a good crowd but were by no means slammed. And I just still think the portion size to price ratio is off. I don't think this is going to be a place that becomes a favorite that I will frequent enough to become a 'regular' but it is good for a change. And the guacamole might be the best in town. read more

Oh my, oh my!!! This place is amazing! Chips and salsa to start, the salsa has a nice kick. Also got a free Queso for checking in on Yelp. Yummy and spicy too. Ordered the taco dish and got blue corn chicken and the original which is braised beef. They don't skimp on the meat. Very hearty. Both the chicken and the beef was Amazing! Juicy, tender and flavorful. First blue corn taco so not sure if it's normal for it to be that hard but it was very hard so that was slight disappointment. Now the street corn, wow! The picture posted by another Yelper is what got me to come in. It was really good! I'm so glad I tried this place out. It was so good! And to complete the meal...free dessert! My husband and I are brand new to town, and this was the first place we tried after abandoning the unpacking. I am not mad this was our inaugural TN meal. We stopped in on a busy Friday night, and had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. The wait turned out to be for naught, however, because we were eventually shown to a small two-top bar table. My husband was craving fajitas and knew that was probably not enough room. We ended up moving to sit at the bar. Because the moving and unpacking left us feeling like we hadn't eaten in about a week and a half (although we had--we're not meal missers!) we started out with the dip sampler to accompany the salsa. The salsa was spicy (fine by me!), and the guacamole was fresh. The bean dip was typical, but still very good. The queso was a yellow queso, and pretty generic, but the rest of the options made up for that without a problem. Next time, we'll probably skip the sampler--it was too much for two people, and even though we knocked it out like champs, no one two people need to eat that much dip. For entrees, I ordered the shrimp quesadilla, and my husband had the chicken fajitas. We needed that extra room the first table didn't offer for all the fajita fixings. In the New Mexican fashion, everything tasted fresh, and seemed to be well seasoned with herbs. After the excessive appetizer, we weren't able to finish our entrees, and certainly didn't have room for dessert, but really enjoyed the good food and friendly service. Overall I was underwhelmed. The first serving of chips were stale, and when we did get some warm, fresh chips, the salsa tasted strange. The queso tasted like crockpot velveeta - edible but unimpressive. The tacos were ok, nothing more. The rice was bland and arrived at room temperature. The beans had little flavor. I found the tacos to be a little greasy and lacking in flavor. The service was mediocre. Our server was pleasant but forgot to ring in one of our drinks. The atmosphere was boring at best. We visited Sopapilla's with high expectations and left feeling "blah" about the experience. The what's wrong list from our experience is quite long: the salsa was so-so, chips were stale, queso took 30 minutes to bring out and by then it was cold and tasteless, the "house special" margaritas were overly sweet (like the kind you buy in a plastic bucket) and the main courses were bland in taste and visually boring. It's too bad they are expanding next door, I don't think they will need the space after they are open for a longer time. After visiting Rick Bayless' new restaurant Red-O in LA the previous week, a superb experience of the ultimate Mexican/southwestern food experience, this was a definite let-down. It's Monday, August 9th and both the service by the waiter and the food coming out of the kitchen are way too slow. Forty five minutes is too long to wait for a meal to arrive on a Monday night. But we were patient and having fun visiting with our friends. To the restaurants' credit, the atmosphere is great, the chips were fresh this week, house margaritas were good, appetizers & entrees were well seasoned and nicely presented. Maybe they need to hire a consultant to help train the kitchen and staff coordinate their efforts better. We noticed that dirty dishes were left on the table way too long after all the patrons are finished eating. How can you serve sopapillas without clearing the table and offering fresh plates?? Did someone not show up for work? We'll try Sopapilla's again; but I'll let them know next time that I am a professional chef and see if that makes a difference! I think the potential is there for a really successful, longstanding restaurant...and no, I don't need a job! read more

Heads up to everyone who knows authentic Mexican fare, this is not it. Now, this place was good, tasty, and reasonably priced, however this is a very Tex-mexy type of place. That doesn't mean it's bad, however, from the dozens of locals that told us this place was epic, AUTHENTIC Mexican food, it was a huge disappointment. They claim they have homemade tortillas they make from scratch (with an upcharge) however, my wife and I both felt that the regular tortillas were just as good. Good to help a Mexican food craving, however, not authentic Mexican street food. If you're craving that and have had Mexican street food from CA or Tijuana or really anywhere in Mexico, this is going to be a drastically different experience than expected. Came here a couple of Sundays ago for a late lunch with some friends. It was an off hour so it wasn't too busy and we were able to be seated right away. The waitress, Colleen, was fantastic. She went out of her way to make sure everything was just right and that we had an enjoyable experience My husband ordered the grilled chicken fajitas and I ordered the Sopapilla platter (tamale, chicken taco, and beef enchilada). It was all quite delicious (I especially loved the sauce on the enchilada) and a pretty big portion. Our friends said their food was also great. To start, they give you fresh chips and salsa (which actually has a kick, much appreciated) and for dessert, a fluffy sopapilla with honey. I love that their happy hour is all day on Sunday. They have a huge patio which would have been a great place to enjoy a few beers but unfortunately, it was raining when we went. We will definitely be back! read more

I consider myself a good judge of food, especially Mexican food, having grown up in San Diego County. I'm an even better judge of fish tacos. It is one of those dishes that I order when I see it on the menu. Hands down, some of the best fish tacos in the greater Nashville area. Better then Oscar's. The fish is white, grilled and seasoned in spices so it's go a kick. Went for lunch. Place was packed. Best part is a thick slice of fresh avocado and a slice of lime is served with each taco. Plus, there's a side of black (or refried) beans and rice. At the end, they serve sopapillas. Rip open a corner and drizzle honey inside. Sopapilla's is delicious. I've been there twice and my boyfriend has been there three times. Both times I've sat outside. The seafood place next door does place some weird music but it's not offensive. The first time I visited Sopailla's our service wasn't top-notch. The time between receiving our chips and salsa, appetizers, and food was way too long. The result was that by time our food arrived we'd eaten our fill of chips. Yes, obviously I have no self control when it comes to dips and chips but the timing was really off. Also, their salsa is really good. I know, no self control! The food was so good though, that we vowed to try again and either just do appetizers or just get dinner. For food I ordered the three tacos. They were excellent and a really reasonable amount of food. Our appetizer was the three sauces, also excellent. The bean dip, though, is essentially refried beans. My second visit was much better. We had a different waiter and she kept our margarita's coming and the timing was much better. We ordered the three dip appetizer and split the lobster tacos (the waiter's suggestion). This left just enough room for the sopapillas which were fluffy and perfectly sweet with the warm honey. read more

How did Sopapillas get "Best Overall" and "Best Mexican" designations in the Toast of Music City? How did it get good reviews on Yelp? It's a mystery to me, but it was enough to lure me into this this place. The meal did not get off to a good start, when we were told to wait despite the visibly empty tables because they were "short handed." We declined to wait in the bar but when we were seated--that's where they put us. With music blaring AND the football game on the tv, the cacophony of noise was such that we could barely carry on a conversation. As it turns out, the only topic of conversation during the meal was how disappointing the food was. I love New Mexican cuisine, and was so looking forward to this meal. But as I found out, the only thing authentic about the food at Sopapillas may be the chili rellenos, because they evidently are shipped in from New Mexico. Unfortunately the shipment must not have arrived for this weekend's diners, because I was told they were "all out" at 4:30 on Saturday. The waiter assured us that everything else was made fresh in the kitchen. So, I ordered the tamale instead. I have never had a tamale that did not have a filling. Tasting as if it were made from Martha White cornbread mix, the only flavors were sweet (yes, sweet) and a hint of green chili in the middle of what was otherwise just three inches of mushy cornbread mix. The beef taco that I asked to accompany the tamale (and which would have come with the chili relleno rather than the shrimp taco that comes with the tamale platter usually) was shredded beef with no spice at all, sitting in a fried flour tortilla, which by the time the plate came to me, was lying on its side long enough for that side to be totally moist and limp. The only flavor came from the small bit of pico de gallo on the side. The side dish of black beans was equally bland. Did their shipment of spices and herbs also get lost? My dining partner's enchilada contained some shredded chicken with no flavor topped with just the tiniest bit of sauce. The only thing we enjoyed, as other reviewers have noted, was the flavorful salsa, but it must be scooped up with cold, cardboard like chips. The guacomole might have been good, but for $10 we did not think it was worth trying. To top off this lackluster meal, two pillows of grease were set down in front of us without a word from our waiter (or maybe he mumbled something I couldn't hear.) I usually LOVE sopapillas. The oil on these pretenders oozed out on to my fingers when I touched them. I have never seen that much grease on anything that was served in a restaurant. OK, they were free. But I'm still not going to eat them. Two stars for trying. read more

Sopapilla's is a place you wouldn't know about unless you regularly drive down Franklin Road. It's tucked away, and quite hidden from the main road - and maybe that's a good thing, since it's already quite busy as it is. Sopapilla's has some really really great authentic Mexican dishes. My absolute favorite is the tamale, but the tacos and enchiladas are really great too. Really nice ambiance, great bar, and nice patio too. But it's all about the food. Went back to Sopapilla's and very glad I did. The food and service were awesome, even though it was a very busy Wednesday night. The table side guac was fresh and delicious...it did need a little acid, but we squeeze a lime in it and that made it perfect. The fajita salad was awesome- definitely recommend! read more

My husband and I have been meaning to try this place for a while, but it's kind of tucked away in an area that we don't pass by often. So late on a Friday night, I pulled out the clipper magazine for ideas, and we decided to try it out and take the coupons with us. We got there around 8 pm, and were immediately seated. Our waitress was very nice and we thought we had excellent service compared to other reviews I've read. The salsa was spicy, which I liked, but I wasn't crazy about the taste. We had a cup of the queso, which was good but nothing to rave about. The menu is of course more Tex Mex (or technically "New Mexico Mex") than traditional Mexican. I went out on a limb and tried the green corn tamale and chipotle grill shrimp taco plate. I've never eaten a tamale before (I like flour more than corn), and I was surprised at how wonderful it was. The corn meal was slightly sweetened, which went great with the green chiles and baja sauce. The shrimp taco was very good as well. I had rice with my dish, but the waitress brought me a complementary bowl of the black beans to try since it was our first time there. My husband had the pollo burrito. It would have been more than I could have eaten, but he finished it off. He had rice and refried beans with his. The refried beans were typical of what you would get anywhere else. We were pleasantly surprised by the complementary sopapillas at the end of our meal. Pipping hot and drizzled in honey, they were very good. We didn't have a $30 food tab to use the $10 off coupon, so I gave our waitress the $5 off dinner as well (alcohol isn't included toward the tab). Our food tab was about $25. However, our waitress gave us the $10 off our meal anyway, which is great service. Overall, I give this four stars because the entrees were excellent, the customer service was great, the atmosphere is cool, and you get a lot of food for the price (especially when you include complementary dessert). My only complaint is that they could improve on their rice, beans, and queso. Next time, I'll try their guacamole. We just didn't order it this time. We will definitely be back. read more

I'm pretty stingy with my stars, but Sopapilla's earned this one. We've not been in a while, but I want to say that Steve Dale and team have found their stride. We showed up just after 6:00 on a Friday night to a small waiting crowd. The hostesses greeted us warmly and seated us shortly after arriving. Our server, Brandy was fantastic, friendly, outgoing, and really went the extra mile to make our visit extra nice. Margharitas and Franklin's easily best queso, while we waited for fajitas hit the spot. I say Franklin, even though I think Sopapilla's is technically in Brentwood because having the best food in Brentwood is not much of an accomplishment. Having the best queso in Franklin takes a little doing. Fajitas were very good. The skirt steaks was cooked perfectly and the black beans, guac and pico were excellent. By the way, queso goes great on a fajita. Food was good, service was outstanding. While we waited for our signature sopapilla's the manager came by and boxed up the rest of our queso and some extra chips for the road. The sopapillas were piping hot straight out of the fryer - and delicious. As we left, the hostesses thanked us for visiting. read more
