Everyone raves about this place and the staff is helpful but honestly, to be in such a heavy Latinx community (maybe dwindling) the food should have more punch, more layered flavor... it should taste like it's been cooking and stewing all day versus a quick sear. I love this restaurant! I normally go for happy hour but went for brunch recently. The server was great and offered several recommendations to the menu. 1. This restaurant was definitely off the beaten path. On American looks very deserted and desolate but up and coming. The restaurant itself is contained within a building that is in a gated yard. The signage to the restaurant was nil. To the food we dined on the queso fundito, and tamale for appetizer. The presentation was good the queso was prepared with bacon instead of the traditional chorizo. It was extremely greasy but the flavors were there . The tamale was a generous portion but doused with crema. We opted for entrees of the quesabirria and the pork carnitas. The quesabirria was good can well stuffed and served with add ins onions and cilantro along with lime. The beans were not served with tacos so we added on. These seemed bland to our taste. The pork carnitas presentation was nice although it was Under seasoned and dry . We also ordered two specialty drink one being the Frida which was a spin on margarita with charred corn. The drink was extremely sour and lacked a sweet balance. I'll pass on the floating corn in my drink next time. To the reason I gave the restaurant three stars. The location and signage. We were the one of only 2 people in the restaurant. The check came 119.00 this included gratuity. I understand the state of the world but gratuity is based on service and I want to be in control is the server Is worthy of customary 20% or even more. So I'm my opinion it's a bad business practice to determine the gratuity for your customers ... allow them to decide if your staff meet the mark. read more

Really tasty and quality experience! It's very spacious and open outside, with more seating inside too. They have really neat vegetarian options that taste like meat, and the famous birria tacos as well. I had birria tacos for the first time here and even though there are only two, it's very filling and rich. The guac and chips were delicious too, but kinda pricey for a small portion. It was still enough for five of us to share and have a decent amount though. Service was great, and the ambiance was excellent overall - modest but quality (at least for the outdoors where we ate). Birria taco is packed with cheese and meat and comes in a bigger than normal tortilla. It comes in 2 with a side of the consome, lime, cilantro/onion, and salsa. Sikil Pak($12) is unique and worth a try. The place overall is well decorated and spacious. Plenty of parking. Really wanted to like this place more. Food overall tastes pretty decent but it's a bit over priced which keeps me from going more and recommending. $16 dollars for 2 tacos just doesn't sit well with many people. If the burrito stays the same price, I think they can at least put bit of guac. I do think if the overall menu were priced more friendly, they could attract more customers and more would recommend their friends to take a visit. Appetizers of Tlacoyos (grilled corn cakes and black beans) and Queso Fundido (swapping out recommended chips for tortillas). The fish tacos were ok but maybe overpowered by the batter, the burrito really bland, the pork tasty. We over-ordered and would have been better-served by just doing the apps. The mandatory 20% gratuity is excessive and unnecessary. Each of the staff were pleasant. The ambiance feels a bit like what it is - seating in a parking lot in front of a corrugated tin butler building. Definitely can do better, there. $150 bill for 3 people. This is a weird one. Pros: It's easy to get to and it has a parking lot. It has ample outdoor seating and enough heat lamps to actually heat. And the menu is really interesting. Cons: They still seem to be working on the service (the waiter kept telling me that he couldn't pronounce ingredients before butchering the pronunciations). The cocktails were kinda awful. But mostly all of the dishes just fell slightly flat. They weren't bad at all, and some of the flavor combinations were really nice (for instance, the sweet potato tacos, or having shishitos in the queso fundido), but I just felt like everything could have been... more. First - this is the most parking you'll ever find near a restaurant in the city. Also walkable from Olde Kensington and Fishtown. Second - great authentic Mexican fare and creative cocktails Third - they've done their best to create a fun Mexican/tropical vibe despite the vast expanse of parking lot pavement that makes up the view from the large patio area out front. I particularly love the wallpaper inside the bathrooms. The little nooks that comprise the perimeter of the patio allow for a sense of privacy even if there are others dining next to you. To conclude - They opened during COVID and I commend them for doing so - especially in a tricky area (the newly developed American Street corridor) which doesn't have a booming restaurant scene (yet!). This is a great spot for dates, groups, or families. I hope it draws the suburban dinner crowd since it does have ample free parking and is relatively close to some other key neighborhoods like Northern Liberties, Olde Kensington, and Fishtown. Better yet, hit them up for lunch and afterwards pop over to browse the Resource Exchange or Neon Museum, or walk down the street for a post-meal beverage at New Liberty Distillery or Punch Buggy Brewery. read more

The outdoor seating in great with planters and the back doors open to the active art galleries in the complex. The food is amazing and fresh and the service is awesome and very friendly. The salsa has a nice kick to it and they give you both green and red sauces. The Birria Torta is delicious and juicy. The flan had a more solid consistency since they add caramel to it. It would be so easy miss this amazing place because it is set way back from the street. There's a huge lot out front so parking is not an issue. Dinner was excellent and the service couldn't have been better. We had a table of six people and we ordered three appetizers and three main plates on our servers suggestion. We shared all the food and it worked out just fine. We ordered Enfrijoladas which were very tasty. Heritage Pork Carnitas is a great shareable dish. This is in a very unassuming spot, if you blink you'll miss it. Situated in a developing area set in a large parking lot attached to a warehouse structure... is Sor Ynez. Look for little roofed huts and twinkly lights and you're there. It was fairly quiet, not crowded at all, and service was quick and friendly. My friend and I really enjoyed the strawberry basil margaritas. They have seasonal flavors that they rotate thru, so get it while you can. I ordered the shrimp ceviche which was served with some salsa and tostadas. The ceviche was tarte and spicy, perfect for a warm spring day. The tostadas were the perfect crunch. I enjoyed the tostadas so much that I insisted we order chips and guac. The guac was creamy with surprise chunks of pepper. The chips came out warm and left us wanting more- so we ordered extra! The vibes are great, I enjoyed how spaced out everything was. The seats were aesthetically pleasing AND comfortable- an impossible combination. There are outdoor heaters and a very sweet lounge area with couches for a larger group to hang. I did not check out the indoor dining set up so cannot comment on that. When the sun set, they turned on the twinkly lights and it really set the mood. I docked a star because I had a great experience but I found the menu selection challenging. There were appetizers/quesadillas and then large plates. I wish there were more small/medium sized entrees to choose from as the appetizers left me wanting more but the plates were too intimidating to order. read more

We had a wonderful brunch at Sor Ynez on a recent visit to Philly. We chose it because of the outdoor heated patio, so that our granddog could come along, but I'd happily return for indoor dining. The servers could not have been more accommodating - including making the breakfast burrito into a vegan option for our daughter, and bringing water and treats for the dog - and everything we had was delicious. The tamales were the biggest hit, and very reasonable at $3 each. We got several different kinds and shared. Husband went for the decidedly un-Mexican pancakes (they did have some dulce de leche on top) and loved them. I went for fish tacos, which were delicious and had large pieces of deep fried fish and loads of toppings, but I did think they were a little overpriced. Daughter loved her burrito with chickpea scramble. FYI - Sor Ynez isn't easy to find, because it's in a strip of warehouses and we didn't notice a sign: I would have walked past except the person who recommended it mentioned it was next to an architectural salvage store (also worth a visit). It is in an area with a lot of warehouse type businesses and I think the several places that opened here were probably similar businesses. But now there is this restaurant here called Sor Ynez which in Spanish means Sister Ynez, yes like the nun. The ambiance is nice and fun. There us inside and outside seating area . I usually sit at the bar as one of my favorite and creative mixologist works there his name is Alejandro. The drinks change every so often but are very delicious. One I like is a corn infused margarita. The food is very good also. You can't go wrong with any choice. Everything is Mexican themed. Give it a try. It also has a nice brunch I believe on Sunday. I think they are only open Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sundays but call or check google to make sure. read more

Our waiter was just not there .. like he didn't want to be there or just didn't care. We order 2 margaritas that didn't get us until an HOUR later ! Yes it took an hour for him to get us our drink even tho we did remind him and he assured us 2x that they would be out soon .... And hour we order at 6pm didn't get our drink until 7:04pm !! I went here last night with my partner and it was excellent. We started with the root veg ceviche and chips and salsas which were delicious- the salsa verde was particularly memorable. Next we got the cauliflower sope and the tortilla soup. I had never had sope before and I really enjoyed it. Kind of like a mini pizza vibe. The tortilla soup was the best I've ever had. Deep flavors in the thick base and a little bit spicy with chunks of avocado and a really interesting Queso throughout. We finished with the flan which was also the best I've had. I was tempted to get the vegan churros which I'm sure we're awesome as well, but I've never had a flan that was actually good and figured that there must be a reason people like them so why not order them at a place that clearly knows what they're doing. I wasn't disappointed! This flan was perfectly sweet and had a custard/cheesecake texture with the delicious caramel coloring it beautifully. Located in a converted warehouse-space on an out-of-the-way, industrial street near Fishtown, Sor Ynez's location and menu nods towards both indigenous traditions and sustainability, and features a number of creative vegetarian and vegan dishes rarely seen in the States, like tlayudas and sikil pak, alongside the classics. We stopped in on a Saturday for lunch, and were impressed by its warm and tastefully-decorated interior, which belies its drab surroundings. We started with drinks- I had a couple of delicious and stiff margaritas, whereas she had the mimosa. For starters, we shared the deliciously fresh guacamole and a duo of salsas verde and rojo, served with delicious and fresh chips. For our entrees, she had the enfrijoladas, smothered in a rich, mole-like black bean sauce, alongside eggs and avocado, whereas I had the vegan posole. Posole is probably my favorite food, and I have had many vegan versions at spots throughout the country, and this was some of the best. Unlike traditional posole, this version was more hearty and vegetable-forward with less broth, while still maintaining the warmth and flavor of the traditional soup. For anyone looking for a fresh take on Mexican with an eye towards keeping traditional recipes and flavors alive, Sor Ynez is worth making the trip. read more

1st time visit. We sat outside, in a really phenomenal space. The decor and the amount of space available were great. Surprisingly, there was a ton of parking - not something I count on in this area of town. The staff were all really accommodating and kind. There were some questions about the menu that show that this restaurant is continuing to grow/develop their style, but the staff were great and gracious in figuring it out. The guacamole + chips were great (high praise, because guac is usually not my jam). I didn't care much for my food, but that's because I didn't read closely enough when ordering. The drinks were lovely - the Selena was beautifully presented and quite tasty.
