A cool spot in the heart of japantown offering soba noodles (made from buckwheat flour). I ordered the goma zaru, which is cold soba with seasame sauce. The soba noodles were chewy and the sesame sauce was a nice creamy, nutty dip. The only downside is the value - the dishes are all pretty pricey and the portions are small (one order of soba is not enough for a meal, and the sobas are all $20+ pretty much). They do a good job making the restaurant feel modern and slightly upscale , with bright and airy interior decor and good service as well.

After walking around Japantown, we were looking for a clean, relaxing spot and found Sora Dining Soba. We put our name on the list, waited outside for a few minutes, and got seated at the bar. The staff was super friendly from the start. We ordered a bottle of Dassai 45 sake, which was excellent. The hot chicken soup hit the spot and had fantastic flavor. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

It was a good one time experience but for the price not sure I would come back. The dining room is nice and clean but the kitchen didn't look that clean which worries me. The duck was cooked and place in a tray right next to compost garbage. I saw it while waiting for the bathroom. Not appetizing. As for the food, we shared - ten zaru tempura was good. Noodles was just okay - tamago appetizer. This was good - duck appetizer. Good but overpriced - ceasar salad good. Also they would charge for extra soba sauce. Lunch was $48 a bit much for me.

I read about this place and found the reviews for it quite good. During a quick trip to Japantown I decided to give it a try for lunch. The space is contemporary and very appealing, light and airy for a small restaurant. It's very clean and comfortable. We were greeted right away upon entering and they beat a drum to announce new patrons entering. A nice touch that adds a bit of charm to the experience. Given menus we weren't rushed or pressured to make our selections. The menu gives you plenty of tidbits, including a full page on how to eat soba noodles. Slurping is OK! We ordered drinks first and I got an iced green tea... it was quite refreshing and tasty. For our order we got a plate of soba noodles and an order of the nine piece teriyaki to share. Both came in good time and the soba is cold. There's a bowl of warm broth to dunk it in, with slices of meat and other accoutrement. I suggest soaking the noodles in the broth as it's far more flavorful. The noodles are excellent, but not the easiest thing for a confirmed Westerner to eat, so go ahead and slurp! The Teriyaki was excellent, well breaded pieces of vegetables and fish plus the largest prawn I have ever seen anywhere. It all was very satisfying. It comes with small bowls of soy sauce and other dipping things including macha salt. Overall a very nice experience. Service is good, attentive and professional. I do recommend trying it out if you're in the area.

This restaurant is located in Japantown and offers combination of hot or cold soba with tempura. I tried the hot soba on a cool San Francisco night and it paired nicely with the crispy tempura. Service was fast and friendly, and the restaurant is clean.

Hostess was approachable and took us to an available table quickly. Party of three was easy to accommodate. Menus and drinks were provided promptly. Ordering was easy and food was prepared quickly. Cold Ten Zaru Soba was delicious and came with dipping sauce and matcha. We also order the Agadashi tofu, karaage and potato chips. Highly recommend all. The hot Egg Soba was delicious. Ambiance is very clean.

We arrived for lunch on Sunday and waited about 10 minutes before being seated. Service was pretty quick and we got our food promptly. The place is great for small to midsize groups or solo dining. Not too loud but definitely some noise. Very clean. This was my first try with soba so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. It was a hot day so I thought soba would be a good idea. My favorite part was definitely the dipping sauce. It had a lot of depth and flavor and balanced with the noodles well. Portion-size was good and was quite filling. I'm docking off a star mainly due to the price. This dish was $21 before tax and tip and was kind of a mild experience. The menu also mentioned a 5% surcharge if I recall correctly. I'm not from SF so maybe these prices are standard for the dish. Overall, I think it's a great experience and I would come back if a friend wanted to try soba. But I do feel like I'm paying more for the experience rather than the food.

What do you eat at a soba restaurant when you're allergic to soba? I can't eat buckwheat because my throat starts to feel constricted, and things go south...if you know what I mean. You would think I'd avoid this place like the plague, but I give the owners credit for presenting an allergy notice warning. I guess I'm not alone. However, I took a closer look at their sandwich board menu (Photo 6) and noticed they made side dishes that sounded appetizing. Since I was a solo diner, I was seated at the counter, which was fine since it wasn't busy. I decided to go for two items on the appetizer menu. The first was the $18 Seared Aigamo. Aigamo is a special breed of duck that acts as a sustaining biological engine for rice farming in Japan. Lightly smoked and broiled, the unusually tender duck was thinly sliced and served with a mustard sauce, green onions, blistered peppers, and shredded daikon (Photo 10). The other dish was simply the $9 3-Piece Kushi-Tempura Set. It was an ample serving consisting of a large shrimp, a squid leg, and a summer squash cut in half. It came with matcha, horseradish, and a light dipping sauce (Photo 9). The entire meal was the right size for me, and frankly I can get other noodles elsewhere like next door at Hinodeya. This spot is quite open and airy compared with the rest of Buchanan.St. You must tell me how the soba is. FOOD - 4 stars...didn't touch the soba but the duck and tempura were tasty AMBIANCE - 4 stars... spacious and airy in here SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty polite and unobtrusive TOTAL - 4 stars...life can be more than soba RELATED - Exploring Japantown? This was my first time at SORA SF in Japantown, and also my first time trying soba noodles! A friend suggested we check this place out since we were in the area. When we arrived, our waiter greeted us and let us know there would be about a 15-minute wait, which was no problem. Once it was our turn, they walked us to our table, but before sitting down, the server hit the taiko drum. Such a cool little touch and a fun way to welcome guests! Once we sat down, we looked over the menu, and I liked how simple and easy it was to follow. They had appetizers, entrées, and drinks, and the menu even explained how to properly enjoy cold soba noodles, which was helpful since this was my first time. Once our food arrived, I was honestly impressed. The soba was delicious and definitely a different experience from the noodles I'm used to. Every bite was flavorful, refreshing, and satisfying. The duck was served cold, which caught me off guard at first, but after trying it, I didn't mind it at all. Overall, everything about the experience was unique, delicious, and fascinating. From the taiko welcome to trying soba for the first time, I really enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back again!

Virtually no wait for a late lunch on Sunday around 3:00pm, the service was fast and friendly. We ordered the Tori-Kara-Oroshi to start, similar to chicken karaage, though the batter wasn't as crispy (almost having a thin mochi like texture) the chicken was still juicy and paired nicely with their light dipping broth sauce. I ordered the Kamo Zara which was especially nice after walking around Japan town under the sun. The warm duck dipping sauce and tender aigamo (duck) were the highlight of the meal for me being very fragrant and tasty. My only complaint was my soba wasn't as firm/ springy as I'd like as they kinda clumped together.

Good food but pricey for starch and noodles. Service is good. Everything is very OK. Good clean food. good portion. Good service. Nice comfy environment, but nothing to memorable. I just recall the $100 price for 3 bowls of noodles. lol

Finally got to try Sora Dining Soba which is one of the few soba spots in SF! We came on a Sunday evening for dinner and waited about 20 minutes for a party of 4. The inside seems a little small since there are many tables in a smaller space but the workers were very efficient and took good care of our party. I got the Kamo Zaru which included cold soba noodles served in a bamboo steamer, the warm dipping sauce, and 4 pieces of duck on the side. The noodles were cooked perfectly and they were bouncy and a little chewy. There was plenty of noodle in the dish to dip into the dipping sauce which was rich with flavor. The duck pieces were also cooked well, I wish it came with more pieces! This was such a nice meal for authentic soba noodles and must-try if you are in Japantown and willing to wait in line!

    How to eat soba properly

Excellent. After our spa date, we decided to grab some soba noodles to recuperate. We ordered the nine-piece tempura set to share. The most varied tempura I have ever had as they had lightly battered seafood as well. In addition to the traditional tempura dipping sauce, they also had grated radish and matcha salt to dip into. Definitely would get again. For the entree, I had the cold duck soba noodles. The dipping sauce had green onions and a citrusy sweet umami taste to it. I enjoyed it so much that after finishing the soba, I drank the sauce on its own not realizing that staff would come back around to pour the soba yu - the hot water used to boil the soba noodles - into the dipping sauce to make a hot soup broth to drink. Oops. Note to self: read ALL instructions on how to eat soba prior. Lesson learned.

The first thing I realized was that this isn't an official Harry Potter establishment - some intellectual property barriers force them to post generic pictures of wizards and people who sort of look like HP characters, a bunch of floating candles and flying dragons on the huge LED ceiling screen, although they do make a reference to the Ministry of Magic in the washrooms. Anyways, the food is the clear star of the show.... Mandrake Flower Pot Hummus Butternut squash, chick peas, paprika with veggie crudite - enough to whet the appetite of four muggles. There's plenty of hummus in a long coffee cup container. Deviled Dragon Eggs Four half-eggs, with different color dyes... a little like a high school project, but not bad either. The yolk is green because they've made it guacamole, with pickled jalapeno (they probably need more), and cilantro. Golden Arancini A play on the golden snitch - cirspy, parmesan dusted rice balls with house tomato sauce. Like the Arancini, it's mouthwatering, and a guiltless treat... easy to share and well portioned.. Great Hall Feast Hand cut ribeye, chargrilled broccolini, duchess potatoes. A little reminiscient of those rennaisance fair events, but delicious - they actually prepared it medium rare. Broccolini okay and mashed potatoes meh. Fireside Pot Pie Impressive presentation with the domed baked top, but the inside was more like a chicken chowder - very watery, and difficult to share. Flavors are there, however. Shepherd's Pie Ground beef, pork blend, farm vegetables, whipped potatoes, baked then topeed with crisped curled potatoes and garlic. Mouthwatering! It's served in a wide bowl, so it was a few minutes before we realized what it was. This one was my favorite! We also had the Creme Incendio and Florean's Ice Cream Sandwich - both excellent! This is a definite must stop again - because I need to try the Pretzel Wands and then Kapfoot's Fish and Chips. And finally, oh, what imaginative cocktails.... That's all...

I'm so glad we did, it instantly lived up to the curiosity. The vibe here is exactly what you want from a brewery. It's unique, cool, and laid-back, with plenty of character and a strong sense of community. It feels welcoming whether you're popping in for one drink or planning to hang out for a while. The beer selection is great, with a nice variety of styles to choose from. Everything we tried was well crafted and enjoyable, making it easy to find something that fits your taste whether you like lighter beers or something a bit bolder. The space itself really adds to the experience. There's a relaxed energy that makes it a great place to meet friends, take a break while exploring the neighborhood, or just enjoy a good beer in a comfortable setting. Great atmosphere, good beer, and an all-around enjoyable experience. We'll definitely be back and are glad we finally stopped in.

It's a great space to unwind with nice beers (and the beers are truly nice, haven't had one I didn't enjoy from this brewery yet) or to hop on your laptop for some work while sipping a brew. Dogs welcome, which is nice too. I made a friend.

Providing a space that could accommodate a large group, offering a large variety of craft beer,…read moreserving hot food, and being conveniently located near a Bart station, The Beer Hall met all of the criteria for a recent get-together with my friends. From the outside, The Beer Hall almost blended into its surroundings - I almost walked right by if it hadn't been for the neon "The Beer Hall" sign. The taproom is quite spacious and could accommodate several large groups; however, the night of our visit was relatively quiet, perhaps due to the cold weather. Since there weren't any large tables, our group spread out over three smaller tables. As people came and went throughout the evening, it was convenient that we could each order our own beer and food at the bar. I selected an IPA from Fieldwork, a local favorite, and the beer stayed cold and refreshing throughout the evening. The food menu was limited, but I was craving something warm and salty to pair with my beer. For nearly $10, the fries weren't cheap, but the plate was piled high with some of the best fries I've had in a while. They were served piping-hot alongside two dipping sauces - aioli and ketchup. My friends sitting around me couldn't resist them either, and the mountain of fries disappeared in record time. The servers at the bar were very friendly and checked in on our group often. We spent a few hours enjoying our conversation and beer, overall having a fun, laid-back evening.

This was my go-to place for craft beer when in downtown SF...back when it was the Mikkeller bar…read more This version is, less than that but still a decent place for craft beers. Staff is a little distracted/disorganized, but they eventually get to you; be patient, you're not coming here for a quick beer. Food is good, tasty and filled with carbs. That's how pub fare is supposed to be, so I mean that in the best of ways. tThe fires are are particularly great, just the right crispy outside and mushy inside. The burger-to-bun ratio was a little off in favor of buns, but flavor was there. Stepping through the door you wouldn't know the place was under new management if you didn't check the name on the door. Same decor, same layout, same everything except the logos/art. It's a nice place to swing by for a good beer. I hope they do well so that they expand the list of taps to a larger selection (they have the infrastructure, just not the kegs).
