Came for an early birthday dinner with my husband and friend. Restaurant is clean and spacious, with a low sushi bar and a bar with high top chairs. There is also an outdoor patio. The service was great, Jeremy especially! Attentive, quick and friendly. He was bartending and serving at the same time but we never felt neglected as far as service. He also makes fantastic cocktails! This is the reason we will be back. I've eaten at a million Japanese barbecue restaurants, here and in Japan, and I had high hopes for this. It's unfortunate that the food quality just wasn't there in my opinion, because it's so close to my house and one of my favorite things to eat. Much of it was lacking either in freshness, flavor or salt. We ordered a ton of food, from both steak and sushi menus, bill was about $387 (we had two drinks each). I just don't feel the quality was there for the price. We've happily spent that much at our favorite Japanese BBQ spot, but with a higher volume of food and much higher quality and authenticity. This new Japanese restaurant that opened recently in Long Beach is a definitely a good find. Nice ambiance, staff were welcoming, service was good, and food was great. My friend and I ordered the lychee pear martini. We thought the cocktail was strong and refreshing and my other friend ordered the cucumber mint martini and thought it was also tasty. For small bites, we ordered the crab cakes, hamachi crudo, and the Wagyu bao, all were delicious with good portions. We ordered the premier set for two which is $56 per person which is a great deal since there were 3 of us and the portions were also generous. For dessert, we ordered the brick toast. Dessert is definitely a must have. I would definitely come back and try their sushi menu. Great dining experience at this new hot spot. read more

Had two small kids and the waitress didn't offer a kids menu or a high chair, ordered a sushi roll we didn't get after we asked 3 times then she finally said we didn't order it, ordered rice and was brought a salad. Stopped by here for a Sunday lunch not realizing they offer "AYCE" for $48/person. They offer variety of items during this time and tbh, there's some good, some mid, and some don't recommend. The meats are decent quality. No complaints. The Japanese street corn, HIGHLY recommend. Albacore nigiri was the freshest. No on the "crispy tofu", it's slimey. The buns are probably just as bad. Its just... too vinegary with small piece of pork with no flavor(why so little meat? Idk.. they're ayce...). The waitress herself was great. She was nice. Although she seemed really new. This is where a 4 star (definitely not 5) goes from 4 to 3. Considering this is AYCE with 90 min time limit, our service stopped as soon as the restaurant started getting a little more folks. I repeat, NOT busy but just a little more people. There was a good 10 to 15 min break in the middle of our meal where we got no food. I mean thank God it was middle of our meal vs when we were hangry. Other than that. Restaurant is clean. Modern. 5 stars for food and 5 stars for service. The restaurant is very nice and we only had the sushi and not the Japanese BBQ. We stopped by randomly for a quick bite after a tough day at work. It was Thursday night and we sat at the bar. We ordered the Hokkaido Scallop Carpaccio (delicious) and the Soso Guud set (also delicious). To drink we had 2 drinks each and the sake flight. Drinks ordered: Yuzu Pineapple Express, Dragon Fruit Highball, Rising Sun, and for my 2nd drink I asked the bartender to surprise me with any mezcal drink. He understood his assignment. We went there a few weeks ago and I hate that I didn't get to leave this review sooner, but shout out to the bar manager (insert name) and also our bartender (I'm so sorry since I waited too long but I believe it was Jeremy? I am not sure if it was the servers or there is no communication within the staff, but we sat down with no one approaching our table for 20 minutes. All the servers and food runners that walked by would stare. No one offered water, asked if we had already been helped, or tell us that someone will be right with us. Hi Dana, I am not one to respond back to comments as I find it very time-consuming especially for something so trivial; however, I feel compelled to respond back to you due to your claims. It seem you are trying to portray us in a negative light as opposed to having a neutral stance. Time limit: Again, the key issue was that this all could have been avoided through simple communication. Your staff could have informed us when we were approaching the end of our time limit. As you mentioned, we exceeded the time limit by 45 minutes; however, this should have been addressed early on. My only assumption why it was not mentioned to us sooner was due to the slow service and the fact the restaurant was not busy. Behavior: I'm not sure what narrative your staff has shared with you; however, labeling us as aggressive and demanding is unwarranted and inappropriate. I know for a fact that we were polite to the servers (I will stand by this opinion). I will also say that our frustration stemmed from how we were treated by the manager, Nancy. Again, her tone and short answers did not help. It took us by surprise which added to our frustration regarding the entire situation and our overall experience at Sosogu ie slow service. To label us as aggressive and demanding is so disappointing. Manager's Decision: We already paid the bill including a 20% tip. We were waiting on the last order and then planning to leave thereafter. I am not sure where the manager's decision came into play as we did not order anything afterwards. This is inaccurate on your end. Ultimately, I appreciate your response; however, returning to your establishment was never an option for me. I do want to thank you for further reinforcing my decision. Like I said in my previous review, I believe in courtesy and basic manners. Side note: it feels disingenuous to copy and paste the same response. Firstly, i want to state that i emailed multiple different emails and got zero responses, so unfortunately im resorting to leaving a yelp review. Went in on a friday night, was told it would be a 45 minute wait, sure no problem, we went down the way, had a drink and came back, and waited an extra 5 minutes to be sat upon being sat, all the tables around continued to get service, and attention, no one even said hi to us, or even acknowledged that we had sat down. after waiting for 20-25 minutes and being completely ignored we finally decided it was time to leave, as we werent going to be served or even attended to. as much as we wanted to try this, this lack of attention, without anyone even saying as little of "hi we'll be with you guys shortly" or "hey we're a little short staffed but someone will be by soon" made our group walk out. i would probably try it again but id be afraid of wasting over an hour just to be ignored again. read more

Sosogu is amazing in food and service. Went in for my first time which was their 2nd day of their grand opening. Was a little skeptical at first because for a part of the menu there sets where you can cook the food yourself, which left me thinking it was similar to kbbq, but our server Omar informed us about how the meat would not burn as fast and have as much smoke in the air as kbbq would, which was very helpful and new for our restaurant experience. The dragonfruit lemonade was amazing and so was the tempura lobster sushi roll! I would recommend any of the sets especially the filet mignon medallions that come with miso butter. A rather disappointing lunch. The food was good quality but the set up and management needs work. 1st, I suggest putting tables together where the switch to turn on grills is on the outside so servers don't have to repeatedly as guests to get up just to turn grills on. Also, if the restaurant is empty, why was my group of 7, who we specified were getting the AYCE Japanese bbq sat at a set of tables that had a grill not working? They sat us at those tables & told us as we were being seated. There were plenty of other tables and even a table on the other side that could have been combined to the working table to accommodate us. Again, my group was the only group for about 20-30mins but somehow the service was extremely slow. If you are asking people to choose only 2 items at a time, you should be checking on them. Since we only had one grill as well, there should have been no way we finished cooking all our meat and were waiting to flag down our server to order more. Additionally, we should have been made aware, if it was known that there was limited deluxe items otherwise we were charged $10 + tax per person on items we couldn't even get. Close to the end of it, our one grill ran out of water and needed to be refilled and then after telling our server, they proceeded to tell us to take off our meat and go wait on two different tables, making us wait a random 12-15mins there because we couldn't do anything. Honestly, the cherry on top was making us go to the service desk after we waiting another 15 mins after we hit 2 hours of being there just to pay. The AYCE is supposed to be 90mins, we would have been glad to eat and get out within 90mins if service had allowed. Overall, good food when we could order it, not worth the extremely slow service and inconvenience of being charged extra for food we couldn't get. read more

Sosogu is a pretty solid sushi joint. We didn't try the bbq but the sushi is good! My friend and I went on a Thursday for lunch. The service was great and he explained the menu well. I ordered the tuna on crispy rice and they added the caviar in for free! That made my day! My friend got the vegetarian roll is its probably one of the best ones I've seen. He said it was great! First time here and we were all very disappointed, specially for the amount of money we paid (see check) I do want to say the sever we had was nice, friendly, but I feel like he could of explained the menu a little more to us (since it was our first time) 1st problem, we did not get out drinks on time. They brought the food out 1st and no drinks, when asked (bartender female) was very rude and not helpful at all. She had a lame excuse about being busy and her being the only one making the drinks. And trust me we were very patient with them. We had to keep asking for refills, we had to keep asking for our food. I feel like the amount of money we paid did not go with the service we got at all. This is in my Top 3 food spots in Long Beach. Well done Japanese BBq! There's an upscale feel to it but also a chill environment. The hostess on all three occasions I've been there has been polite and very accommodating. I suggest doing a reservation. There is plenty of parking due to it being in a shopping plaza. The inside is really nice with a semi-open kitchen concept. The open grill on the table gives you the experience to cook your own proteins or you can have them cook it and not use the grill at all. Must try the Boa buns, the blue crab hand roll, any of the sashimi options and then go with the prefixe option for the grill. The garlic noodles are fire and the best cut of meat is the ribeye and the hangar steak. They have condiment sauces that taste great when mixed together. One is sweet and the other is spicy. Both are great. Restroom is clean and the staff have always been accommodating and very attentive. This isn't a cheap concept so be prepared to spend about 50 to 60 per person. Was greeted by the bartender, Jasmine, who was friendly and recommended several of the Specialty Sushi Rolls (forgot which one it was) and the Chicken Wings...both were excellent, but the wings really stood out - delicious. Jasmine also made one of the best Espresso Martini's I've had in a long time. Food and drinks were also fairly priced. I'll be back for all three items again. I did also try the Brick Toast for dessert, it was tasty but the bread itself isn't sweet and it's a lot of bread...I ate the middle but left the crust.
