    03/08/26 Just run. Listen to me. Just go. Go to Faka's and you'll understand why I'm so angry I can't have this everyday. Hubby and I shared a 3 protein mixplate. It consisted of teriyaki chicken (bomb), karaage chicken (bomber) and sweet chili garlic shrimp (bombest) with white rice. When I tell you I was mad cuz my husband ate the last shrimp... You just have to go and taste for yourself. Everything we had was delicious. And Lucas, the one who took our order was so helpful and patient. Totally giving the spirit of aloha to every customer. 10/10 on food, service and vibes. Will definitely be back for sure!

    Food: 7/10 Service: 7/10 Ambiance: 7/10 Let's start with the good: * At $15 a bowl, the price is good for the single protein plates. * They provide generous portions of protein during a time when most restaurants are skimping on the protein. So I respect that! * Love the hot pink branding. * The food is good! Now, for the bad: * The food is not great. It's lacking in any type of unique standout flavors. * Carrots and broccoli were not seasoned AT ALL. I'm talking no salt, no Peppa. Just straight up steamed vegetables that look like they came from the Frozen Isle of a grocery store. * They put waaaaaaay too much sauce on the rice, yo! Next time I will ask them to significantly reduce the amount of sauce used on the rice or to not put any at all. It's unnecessary.

    So, I first had FAKAS at a different location and it was a lasting taste. Long behold, they opened one up closer to where we live and at one of our go-to spots, Steelcraft in Bixby Knolls. Perfect spot to bring that island vibes and ono grindz. We went to their grand opening and they had a "block party" and definitely brought that island vibe to the area. Delicious food and staff that bring aloha to your day. Our family fave is the sweet chili garlic shrimp, so ono with that spicy Mac. And of course, my daughter loves her spam musubis! Just FYI, maybe call ahead if you're going later on in the day, there could be a chance they will run out of something you like. It happened to us once and it was a bit disappointing, but that just goes to show how much folks love their food!

    Idk why I keep lying to people who ask me what my favorite food is. I truly love Hawaiian. I'll always stop at a new grill for the usuals, and I'm so glad I found this spot! The three item combo plate blew my socks off! I did the karage, shrimp, and teriyaki chicken with extra Mac salad which is my go to with Hawaiian. Bomb is an understatement I will absolutely be back to add Faka's to the top of my hawaiian grill list!

    I finally able to get a meal here. Each time I visited previously they were sold out of many popular items. They're still working out the new location wrinkle. I appreciated them informing me as soon as I walk up about what was sold out and what was available. So, I settled on the teriyaki chicken with rice. It was okay, not a stand out but decent Service was really good and one of the reasons I'm returning to try other items. There is plenty of outdoor seating with heat lamps of needed and pets are welcomed.

    Box looked great when we opened it, got the 2 combo plate with chicken karaage & shrimp. Biggest gripe is that the rice under the chicken was drowning in teriyaki sauce! Didnt even want to eat the rice unfortunately, diabetes rice! The chicken on top didn't even have that much sauce so I felt like they just poured the sauce on the rice. The chicken actually tasted good, but would definitely recommend to get the SAUCE ON THE SIDE. The shrimp were big and came with like a sweet-and-sour sauce, would've been better with just butter and garlic.

    Food was bomb. Portion was huge and I got full quick. Service was nice and cashier was super friendly. The vibe was chill and you can get a beer right next door.

    Following a morning of Friday the 13th Tattoos and afternoon beers, I needed food. I ordered the Pork and Shrimp plate with rice, veggies and seaweed salad. Everything was flavorful and succulent. Highly impressed with the friendly service and massive portions, I am stuffed! Thank you Faka's!

    Me and my girlfriend were really excited to try this new place and even waited a few times cause it was closed, but that wasn't the problem. When it was finally open and we went it was kind of disappointing what we got. I ordered the mix plate with teriyaki chicken and broccoli and carrots as well as a spam masubi and my girlfriend got a mix plate with sweet and spicy chicken and the shrimp with broccoli and carrots too. The teriyaki chicken was decent, but we were both a little disappointed that the vegetables where not seasoned at all and also our rice was undercooked. It was also pretty obvious the shrimp was okay and the spam musubi was way too sticky with not enough spam it self. Overall it was just disappointing for how much it cost with my meal being $20 and my girlfriend's being $24.

    This Faka was phenomenal. So many different layers of flavor that tickled the taste buds. Food was great. Service was great and this location is a vibe. Highly recommended.

It's gotten a lot more popular since then, with some great additions to the menu (a lot of vegan options) and social advertising. So when I was walking back home from a delicious (but not filling) lunch, decided to stop in to 'top off'. It had a great dish along with very good banchans (but also a bland rendition of a classic Korean dish). It was busy on a mid Saturday afternoon, with their dedicated backyard parking lot pretty full. They now have outdoor seating where they've set-up korean 'grill-your-own' bbq tables. There's a clear 'Please wait to be seated' sign at the front, but no dedicated hostess station, so one has to wait till a server happens to come by. I was told I could choose a booth. There are no printed menus, instead needing to depend on their website. I had a craving for kimchi jjigae ($18.99), and noticed mackerel ($9.99) so got that as well. The jjigae comes with banchan, and those came early. They really upped their game here, with 7 different ones that looked (and tasted) great. Today, they had a daikon and carrot pickled salad (solid, would go great with fried chicken), stir-fried mushrooms (would go great in a bibimbap), marinated fish cakes (a personal favorite, and their version was solid), soybean sprout side dish (have grown to appreciate this as I've gotten older), napa kimchi (pretty strongly sour), cucumber kimchi (strongly favored by still maintaining crunchiness), and a decent macaroni salad (think I tasted a bit of potato in there, Hawaiian-style). This is a super good deal, especially for lunch. The banchan along with the steamed rice (well prepared) comes in bronze looking dishes, indicating a higher level of refinement. I love pike mackerel, having it quite a lot when growing up, and always thought that it (kkongchi) was what mackerel was in Korea. In reality, a more popular mackerel is the Korean mackerel (godeungeo), and this is what is served as an appetizer here: the preparation was a revelation. Two large, generous, boneless filets of mackerel is lightly breaded and fried. It sits on top of a bed of greens with various accompaniments. A generous amount of chili threads make it visually appealing as well. This is an absolute steal at the price, a fine dining dish at this restaurant. And it was great not having to worry about thin bones ruining each bite. I really loved this dish. The dish I thought would be good...was not. Just looking at it, one can tell something's up: the broth was bland without umami, which is the worst sin for this dish. There is a choice of spam (chosen) or pork belly, and its definitely added at the end of cooking since it added nothing to the broth flavor. Maybe the broth is initially prepared vegan-style (no pork or fish seasoning initially)? But if so, why no mushrooms? Anyway...I ate all the chunks in the stew to not waste, but left the rest of the broth alone. Service was attentive to bring the dishes, but then completely non-responsive afterwards. I finally was able to grab another server, who was able to check me out tableside using Toast tablets.

The order taker was super friendly and helpful. We paid for delivery and the food arrived on time. We had noodles, teri and lahaina fried chicken, bbq beef, kalua pork, ramen salad, Mac salad and rice. No one left hungry. Portions were plenty and everything was onolicious! Back then I did not think of that. And now that I do, I say the breeze of Hawaii would help anyone understand that what he did was a youth Indiscretion, like going for a swim in the cloak of darkness while only wearing a lei. Going to Back Home in Lahaina was not a trip back to the Big Island, I won't say that, but it was a moment of joy inspired heavily by a Hawaiian decor that both bordered on the tragically kitsch and the whimsically fun depending on where you stood or sat. But the true treasure of this Hawaiian micro-isle is their fare-- no doubt about that. After the meal my friend Conrad and I went to the front of the house, where they have the to go section. This is where the kitsch became most circus-y. Although, I did not clip everyhing, I did clip a make your own lei kit, hawaiian stickers, and other things that make the place feel like a tourist trap for Hawaiian hopefuls. For me, the tawdry lessened the impact of the Aloha I heard from the dining room. In sharp contrast, the main dining room had this mural of a whale coming out of deep blue water with Hawaiian florals on the edge of the land that was more transportive to the land where coconuts fall from palm trees and hula skirts are a must for every closet. The main room dining room also had these string lights and sphere paper lamps that made me feel like I was eating at a night market where I could see the stars of a Hawaiian skiy but it was both day time, and there was a roof above me. The food was the situation that needs to be address though, with great respect and admiration because almost every bite was supremely good. My friend Conrad and I first shared a Lahaina Platter- basically their appetizer platter or to be Hawaiian their pupu platter, and please do not go for the easy joke it is not that funny and really kind of base and gross, if the wrong person is making it. The must of the spot, unsurprisingly, is their Lahaina fried chicken. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and kind of like karage chicken but different with the spices and flavors and ocean fronts of Hawaii. I know I did not make sense but I gotta believe that Hawaiian culture made the dish great and Hawaiian culture is partly define by waterfront property. My favorite things from the dish were the Lumpia which are often described as Filipino eggrolls. The pork meat was flavorful, the paper wrapping was on point, like wonderfully thin yet still structurally strong, not crispy, more firm with crisp. The Cinderella story of the day was the spam musubi. The saltiness of the seaweed was present but not in an overblown way, the sweetness of their teriyaki sauce carried savory notes that uplifted the sweet notes, in a wonderful way, their sticky rice was textbook fluffy and fabulous. Overall, I would nitpick flaws. And for this review I do not feel like finding the wrong cracks on a whole coconut skin. My main dish was their bbq grilled chicken plate. I could not finish everything at the restaurant. I had cold left overs at home and they hit the spot in this way that really earned my respect, because cold left overs still holding strong that is like seeing a shooting star while you enoy Mai Tais in a white beach---- living the improbable dream. What was best out of the bunch was their Lahaina chicken. And again, even though the fried goodness had withdrawn, the flavor and textured that remained was still, in a way, intact and in some ways optimal. I just shivered admitting that. I was happy with the food overall, and want to communicate that it was a strong showing for a place that sits within a strip mall. Do not just a shore by the lack of its crashing wave sounds. I also love the name of this place. Like I went back to Lahaina, has personality. Like it is a name that drips from the tongue even though it is long. Pluis, saying multiple times in a conversation makes the place feel important. Conrad had some cheesecake with jello and he loved it. I did not try it, but it was unique and I did not think such a dessert existed. The crust was walnut, I would have thought it would be Macadamia. I definetetly love this place and want to back again soon!

I got lucky and found a spot right out front on Anaheim Street. It shouldn't be too hard to find parking on nearby side streets. We visited on a weekday at 5pm and took advantage of their great happy hour, which runs all night on Monday and Tuesday, and from 3pm to 6pm Wednesday through Friday. Happy hour includes quite a few food specials, and $2 off tiki cocktails. They also have a tiki marketplace in the parking lot on the first Saturday of every month. We sat at the bar since we enjoy talking to the bartenders. Other seating options include a dining area in front with high top tables, and tiki hut booths behind the bar. The booth cushions are pretty beat up. They also have an open air patio out back with a lot of tables. There is another dining room between the patio and the front of the house that has minimal décor and mainly has murals on the walls. The overall tiki décor is somewhere between ok and good. The atmosphere feels like a neighborhood tiki bar with dive bar undertones. We started out with a few appetizers. The veggie egg rolls ($6 during happy hour) were good, and the sauce had a slight heat. We also had the shishito peppers ($8) which were a generous portion and had a very good unami sauce on them. I started out with the Fluffy Banana cocktail (White Rum, Cinnamon, Lemon, Coconut, Banana Liqueur, Bitters, $13 minus $2 happy hour discount). It had a great foam top rising above the edge of the glass. It was balanced with a light to medium sweetness, with coconut up front and banana underneath. She started out with the Bye Bye Ladies (Pineapple, Coconut Cream, Lemon, Tito's Vodka, Trader Vic's Macadamia Nut Liqueur, Shaved Macadamia Nut, $14 minus $2 happy hour discount). This was balanced, but on the much sweeter side with coconut and pineapple up front, with a little macadamia in the background. We ordered more food, and I had the Bamboo Classic Burger ($10 during happy hour). This was a solid tasty burger, and came with a healthy portion of french fries. She had the BBQ pulled jackfruit sandwich ($18). It is nice that they have some vegetarian options on the menu, and she enjoyed it. The Shoyu BBQ sauce had a little spiciness, and the coconut chili slaw definitely had some heat. Next, I had the Fire Walker (Del Maguey Mezcal, Lime, Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Falernum, Habanero Bitters, $14 minus $2 happy hour discount). The mezcal was a little bolder than I usually like, but it was good with light passion fruit flavor, and a nice kick from the habanero bitters. Her second drink was the Monkey Pod (Ron Del Barrilto Rum, Lime, Tamarind, Coconut, $13 minus $2 happy hour discount). It was balanced with tamarind and lime up front with coconut in the background. We had one last round and I got the Dr. Bamboo (Dr. Bird Jamaican Rum, 151 Rum, All-Spice, Prickly Pear, Cinnamon, $16). This one was my favorite. It is a little boozy, but balanced and lush with good allspice and pear flavor. It also feels like a generous pour. Her last cocktail was the Jungle Bird (Caruba Dark Jamaican Rum, Lime, Pineapple, Coconut Washed Campari, $14 minus $2 happy hour discount). This was also very good, and their version isn't as bitter as most. Our bartender Steph was awesome. He was very friendly, had great knowledge of the cocktail menu, and provided great service. He even let us try a little sample of one of his drink concoctions he was working on. Our evening here during happy hour was an absolute bargain. We had two appetizers, two entrees, and six cocktails, and the bill was just a bit over $100. One negative is that the men's room behind the bar is kind of gross and feels very inconsistent with the rest of the bar. It's very punk with stickers all over and it stinks. The bottom line is that the food and drinks are pretty good, and they're an excellent value during happy hour. Service was great, and the atmosphere is ok. We would definitely return during happy hour.
