Wanted to like this place. IG made me come here but meat is decent but $$$. Not worth the money. Our Server speaks very little English so we had a hard time communicating plus she gave up giving us any instruction how to eat. Went there with my family. Beef was very tender and delicious. Pork belly was good, but had the pork-y smell which is very common but I've had pork without it (not sure what makes the difference). The hot plate (I guess called "Sot" in Korean) was big, no one was fighting for real estate. Ambiance was good, modern and trendy. What set this place apart was the complimentary side dishes they serve. Kimchee was probably one of the best I've had, as well as many of their other dishes. I really didn't want to write this, but I feel compelled to share my recent experiences at Sot. The last two times I visited, the meat was noticeably not fresh. During one visit, I even brought it to the manager's attention. While they did switch it out for a different cut, they insisted there was nothing wrong with the original meat--even though everyone in our party (7 people) noticed the same off-putting taste. I've been to Sot several times before and always enjoyed it, which is why this was especially disappointing--particularly considering the price. We spent over $450 plus tip, and the quality just didn't match the cost. I gave it two more chances after that, hoping it was a one-time issue, but unfortunately encountered the same problem with a different cut of meat. Sadly, I won't be returning. We had the Wagyu Premium, the meat was so tender. I loved that they cooked the meat for you and it was smooth service. Very accommodating to my toddler. I appreciated how clean and non smokey the place was. Cooking on the "SOT" was pretty cool too, it didn't get as charred as fast as it normally does on a typical grill. Easily the best KBBQ restaurant I've visited in San Diego! The meat quality was incredible, the waitstaff was fantastic (they did everything for us), the sides were great, and I loved the cast iron. The ambiance was good, and the restaurant was very clean. It's not an all-you-can-eat restaurant like Manna, and it's definitely on the pricier side, but the difference in overall quality is comparable to getting a steak from Outback compared to Ruth's Chris. Came for dinner on a Friday night after making a reservation for 4 a few days prior. I was excited to try a new kbbq spot, especially since they're known to have great service and higher quality meat that servers cook for you on a sot grill. However, I was a little disappointed because the sot sampler ($89) came out underwhelming, and not filling. Our banchan and sides also came out by the time almost all of our meat was eaten. Was kind of sad looking at other tables who had all of their beansprouts and kimchi grilled with their meats. We ordered more food like kimchi pancake, steamed egg, and garlic short rib. The garlic short rib was actually really delicious, flavorful, and tender. After ordering that, we were full. I visited this place about a month ago with my family and in-laws, and we had an amazing time. The meal was delicious, and our server, James, made sure everything was grilled to perfection (medium/medium-rare). He even cut the meat into smaller pieces for my little ones, which was such a thoughtful touch. As a mom of two young kids, I knew right away this would be my go-to spot for kbbq. Any parent with young children can relate when I say that dining out with kids often means you're either grilling and feeding them or actually getting to enjoy your own meal - James made it possible to do both! Since then, I've been recommending this place to all my mom friends. So when the family wanted kbbq last night, I insisted we go to SOT. Unfortunately, my experience this time was a complete 180 from the first. Our server, Skylar, was almost non-existent. She briefly showed up at the start to grill our steak and short ribs. The grill was so hot it burned one side of the meat while leaving the other side undercooked. Then she turned the heat way down and tossed some brisket on the grill before disappearing completely. I ended up cooking the rest of the order myself. The restaurant was busy, yes, but Skylar never came back to check on us--though I did notice her visiting other tables. Maybe she assumed I could cook my own kbbq because I'm Korean? She even walked by as I was standing up cutting up the pork, but didn't offer to help. While we could've ordered more, I wasn't about to pay premium prices for such poor service. It's amazing how much a good server can elevate a meal, while a bad one can totally ruin it. I was excited when SOT opened in San Diego, especially since it meant I no longer have to drive all the way to Irvine to satisfy my kbbq cravings. But after last night's experience, I'm honestly hesitant to return. Brand new KBBQ spot that recently opened. Decor inside is modern and clean. They have TVs on each side so you can watch Olympics or whatever games they have on that day. Really chill vibe for a Saturday morning. Only a handful of tables at opening time. Although clean, bathroom smells like sewage. Banchan was fresh and delicious. I love their kimchi. The onion salad to put on the meat was good also. Got the sampler plate with beef belly, ribeye, short rib, and pork belly. Each meat was tender and delicious with a good fat ratio. I like the salts you can eat with the meat to amp up the flavor. Oil does collect and pop at you a little, just scoot your chair back or move the oil toward the drain hole. The oil is good to cook your garlic in perfectly! I think the cast iron grill makes a difference in the heat distribution and flavor. They cook for you since the meat is premium, but I don't mind cooking ourselves. I ordered lettuce wrap that didn't come out but that's ok, it was a lot of food for two people. Overpriced Korean bbq. Been coming here ever since they opened and they just keep on raising the price for the same stuff. It was already on the pricey side when they first came out and now it's just overpriced, I didn't mind paying a premium for quality meat but clearly they want you to pay more than premium. Steamed egg doesn't come free in the set anymore, and if it's their goal to price out 95% of the consumers that come here I think they've done it. You are averaging $60 a person(easily) and there's some all you can eat with that price that I would rather go to. read more

I'll say upfront that this place is more expensive than your typical KBBQ. It's also not all you can eat. With that said, I think it's worth it if you can afford the few extra bucks because the meat quality is excellent and above what you would get elsewhere. We tried the A5 wagyu sampler which is extremely marbled (fatty) steak and it was very tender and delicious as expected. I will say the A5 wagyu sampler is the right amount of food for two people. If you're coming with a big party it's probably not enough. We also got the ssamjang and veggies which was delicious. Way tastier and less salty than store bought ssamjang. I wish I could have it at home all the time. This was $10 and I recommend it. You wrap your meat in lettuce with perilla leaf, herbs, garlic and jalapeño, and ssamjang and it's tasty this way but you can do it however you like. I will say that if you come into this place not expecting lots of food for your dollar, and want quality meat and service and really sweet Korean ladies who are attentive, you will be happy. You will walk away with a full, happy but not overstuffed belly. If your idea of value is Cheesecake Factory, probably not for you. read more

One of the best kbbq experiences I've ever had in SD! we came here on a Thursday at 5pm and were seated immediately. The workers are really attentive and made great conversation with us. I've been here twice and got the Wagyu sampler both times. It's expensive, don't get me wrong, but it can feed 3-4 people so $160 split amongst 3-4 people isn't too bad. On arrival, you can put your name on a list, but don't expect them to call or text when it's your turn. We were 6th on the waiting list so thinking it would be a while, we went to Daiso for a bit. When we came back, people who arrived after us were being seated so this is how we know providing your phone number does nothing. We just readded ourselves to the wait list and were seated within 10 minutes. Both times I went, I was blessed enough to have Catherine as our server/cook (as you don't grill the meat yourself, but staff does it for you). Catherine was very nice and sweet and funny! Because I went twice in one week, she remembered I was allergic to rosemary and gave us asparagus instead. I still feel bad for not liking mushrooms because while the mushrooms looked good (and expensive ), I'm not a fan of the texture. So if anyone in your group doesn't like mushrooms, know that the Wagyu sampler comes wih them! The meat is the best meat I've ever eaten. It's juicy and the banchan really complements the meat. There's a green tea salt and red wine salt that are the chef's kiss, and the wasabi is also very good. The fresh kimchi is good, but I have a slight preference for the fermented kimchi they grill. I went on a Saturday night (arrived around 7:30, was seated around 8:30), and a Tuesday night (arrived around 7 and was seated immediately). Although it was busy on Saturday night, it felt like the service was the same as when I went on Tuesday night. The workers seem very attentive. And while it can get loud when it's crowded, it's not too loud. The tables are spaced nicely so it doesn't feel cramped. I'll definitely come back here again but probably for a special occasion just because of the price, but this place is worth a visit! read more

While they do the job when my fat ass is priorizing quantity over quality, Sot BBQ offers something different to the San Diego market. It's located in the same area as one of San Diego's shining crown jewel - Cheetah's Gentleman's Club. Let's get one thing out of the way first - this place is not cheap! But you shouldn't come here looking to nickel and dime your dining experience. You should eat here for a unique Korean BBQ dining unlike any other in San Diego. The quality of the meat is top-notch; I've been fortunate enough to dine at some of the best steakhouses in the country, and Sot BBQ is on par with any of them. The claypot-thingy for grilling is awesome for collecting meat juices for your veggies. The service was great, as they do all the cooking for you as well. Parking can get tough at times but nothing too bad compared to other restaurants in the Kearny Mesa Area. Last but not least, don't touch the top of the grill like I did and burn yourself. I am NEVER coming back here!!! Came here on a Friday night and it was not busy at all....RED FLAG. We got seated and placed our order for two meats...OVERPRICED. As soon as the food came out I started cooking the meat since that is what you do at kbbq, however the server came over and started putting stuff on the grill and COOKING THE MEAT!!! This may be their business model but it is not a good one as most of us like our kimchi cold. I kept trying to use the tongs but the server just kept REACHING over the table and taking them from me!!! I was in shock and saw that they were doing it at other tables as well..ok sure...but our server stood at our table for atleast 10 minutes while others were just there for a few seconds. EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE!!! The meat was fine at first but got oily quick. Due to the server standing there and moving the meat way too much she splotched oil all over my friend. Horrible place horrible food horrible service. next time i will stay at home and eat CHIPS!!!! i suggest you do the same. read more
