This cute little nook right on Dillingham Blvd serves up some serious chicken and much more than the others. It's not just bulk friend chicken or in a bowl you can get them wings or boneless (plain or sauced), sandwich, salad, Chi-bob (Chicken bowl) or combo (side + drink) so many options which one will you have!? I had to try the bowl of course and boneless honey to take home. Well the bowl was different I did get it the standard original with the topping they offer shoyu + mayo not pictured that I can see was it also topped with pickled daikon (takuan) which was bizarre I actually took a bite and didn't really like it and the rice was mushy and to be honest not the the usual kind of rice we're all used to so I don't know what type or brand it is but the chicken was yummy then I dropped the whole bowl :'( gahhh!! Ahh well the bowl wasn't meant to be for me but went home and excited to co continue the fried chicken feast!! Everything is made fresh to order and so worth the wait, still hot the chicken is done perfectly crispy, they do know exactly what their doing and I chose honey because they say it's one of the popular flavor...skeptical but tried it...OMG! It was actually the best sauce from any Korean fried chicken in my opinion and is the closest flavor that I remember from way back in the day when Korean wings had first started it's roots. As I drove my car in to Chung's Alignment to get some work done (also a 5 star biz), I see this little shack right off the sidewalk. What? How odd. I just had to try it. I got the 7 pieces of boneless chicken for $8.95. Now to choose a flavor. Shoyu? Honey? Wasabi mayo? Yang nyeom (spicy sweet)? Hell's gate ("no refund, no law sue")??? I got the honey flavor. First off, the fried chicken is excellent - very crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside... not one dry piece! I'm impressed! Next, the sticky sweet sauce has a bit of garlic, which makes me happy. I would get it again. But, I need to try the other flavors too! If I weren't at Chung's, I would park in the lot next to Soul Chicken where there are a lot of other food spots. While I waited for my chicken, I visited Hana Tea, next to Lox of Bagels. We are on a mission to try the new KFC joints that have recently opened on Oahu. First up - Soul Chicken, since it's the most convenient for us on weekends. I called our order in ahead of time to avoid having to wait on-site. We tried the 6-piece honey chicken wings, 6-piece sweet & spicy chicken wings, the 7-piece boneless (no sauce), and the Gimmari. The kids loved the boneless chicken - it was moist and easy to eat since there were no bones or cartilage to mess with. Between the honey and sweet & Spicy, I liked the honey a lot. The hubby thought the sweet & spicy was better. But you can't go wrong with either - they're both tasty and plump. The Gimmari was ok, nothing special IMHO. Next time I'll try the french fries. On a recent change of plans that left me with a free night for dinner, I decided to try out Soul Chicken (SC), one of Oahu's newest KFC joint. I mean, as a fan of Korean fried chicken I just had to investigate. Located next to Kokea Center (corner of Dillingham Blvd and Kokea St.) with nearby businesses of H&R Block, Hana Tea and Yohei Sushi, SC is a small window that offers Korean fried chicken. Their menu is simple: chicken wings, boneless chicken, chicken sandwich and assorted sides. As I studied the menu I was entertained of their spiciest flavor of "Hell's Gate", with the disclosure of "no refund and no law sue." You have been warned! I just had Von's Chicken several days ago so I wasn't in the mood for chicken wings. I decided on their spicy chicken sandwich combo. After paying I was given a receipt and was advised a 10-15min wait. I used the waiting time to snap some photos to attach to this review. My food order was initially given to the wrong person but that error was soon rectified. I hopped into my car and drove straight home. VERDICT: Food here is made to order so my sandwich and sides were still very hot. I was quite impressed with my styrofoam box as the chicken sandwich was quite substantial in volume and in weight. After cutting my sandwich in half, it was finally time to dig in. The spicy chicken sandwich was delicious - - layers of boneless chicken thigh meat was deep fried with an amazing crunchy exterior. The dark meat was juicy and the exterior was seasoned with a semi sweet and spicy sauce. Lightly dressed red cabbage and cabbage slaw brought freshness to the sandwich and that tiny bit of vinegar to cut the grease. The components of the spicy chicken sandwich have such a great balance and well thought out. For my side, I chose gimmari, or deep fried seaweed rolls. It was crunchy and warm with just a touch of sesame oil flavor. In my paper bag I also found some seasoned french fries that were still hot and crunchy. Not sure if that's some grand opening promotion or if it was put in my bag in error. They have 2 outdoor dining tables on the side for dine in. I didn't see any dedicated parking for SC so I ended up parking at next door Kokea Center and walked over. Overall, a very pleasant first experience trying SC that has me wanting to next get their chicken wings. I do like spicy foods but I will assure you that I won't be getting their Hell's Gate because it's no fun when you kill your taste buds and cannot enjoy eating your food. read more

New KFC! Korean Fried Chicken Alert! There's a new chicken place in the same strip mall as Yohei and Hana Tea, on Dilingham Street, Diamond Head direction. You can park in the mall. I ordered the Yang Nyeom 7 piece boneless. It was crispy and the sauce was sweet and tangy. They only had boneless that day, so in my mind, I was bummed out, since I was thinking I was getting chicken nuggets. (Like some other places...) This place serves chicken thigh strips, so actually, the boneless option had way more meat. So it's odd the boneless choice you get 7 pieces and bone-in you get 6 pieces. I guess there's a cost with bone-in or something. The rice cake with the yang nyeom sauce was properly cooked and slightly crispy exterior. It's a fairly new spot and there were a lot of people waiting for their chicken. Seems like they wanted to hire more people to handle the demand. I made a phone order but I still had to wait. Be patient and call ahead to reduce your wait time. I'm going back to try the bone-in wings, which I'm sure will be awesome. Thankfully the parking lot wasn't busy there was parking right out front at almost 12:00. Thank goodness they have online ordering, my favorite thing about restaurants is when they have online ordering it makes like so much easier. The cashier was the sweetest! I ordered the 7pc boneless chicken in the honey flavor that comes with a side and drink. For my side I got the tteokbokki with nyeom sauce and I also ordered the gimmari. The tteokbokki wasn't my favorite it was pretty hard I warmed it up and it go a little softer, probably won't order that one again. But the gimmari?!? BEST THING EVER!!! It's like japchae inside and it was DELICIOUS!! I would just eat that if I had to. The chicken was nice a crispy and the honey wasn't very subtle. It was about $22 for everything which isn't bad. I catch the bus very frequently everyday and I always pass by this place so I finally went here on a rainy day after getting my ears pierced that's adjacent to the Ink Pit. From reading some reviews it may take awhile to cook so I made sure to call in 20 minutes in advance to avoid the long wait. I assume it takes awhile to cook since they're making everything from scratch from making the batter to running around Kalihi catching the chickens to ensure quality meat haha jk maybe.. I finally got my order of my 6pcs Yang Nyeom chicken and side order of 4pcs gimmari. They also included a free side order of pickled radish. Gimmari- Tempura battered japchae noodles wrapped with seaweed Yang Nyeom chicken wings- Ketchup, gochujang, other spices for sauce coating It was hard for me to describe what the Yang Nyeom chicken wings tasted like so I had to look it up on the internet. There is an mild or spicy option so I picked mild and it tastes sweet! But the chicken skin coating was a bit like a doughy crunch, maybe it got very soggy from my long one hour bus ride home. I air fried it but it was still kinda doughy. The doughiness is why I gave this place 4/5 stars but would try again another time and maybe eat over there to change my rating. The gimmari, I would most definitely eat as a bored snack. I was surpised I actually got a little bit full from it, maybe because of the batter and noodles that its tricking my brain for it to be a meal. A new Korean fried chicken place in town is always exciting! Saw this on frolic and decided to give it a try. We parked in the Hana tea/ink pit parking lot and walked over to Soul Chicken. It's a small booth on the side. I would recommend take out unless you want to eat there (only two small tables). The menu is small but there are a lot of options - if course, you'll have to try a fried chicken. You can choose between bone in and boneless and specify the flavoring you want. There are about five flavors and the worker recommended the yeong nyom (? Not sure if I'm spelling that right) or honey garlic sauce bone-in style. We opted for the 6 pc yeong nyom - which was described as a Korean sweet and spicy sauce. Also ordered a side of mandoo which comes in small or large size. They have a bunch of other sides that were interesting and I'll def be back to try more! We ordered at the booth and we're told the order would take around 15 minutes. Of course we made a stop by Hana Tea while waiting and then went back to grab the food. Service was fast and the worker at the front was very nice. We decided to take the food back to our office to enjoy and our mouths were salivating the whole car ride back! Now onto taste. I would not call myself a Korean fried chicken expert but based on what I've tried before, this place seemed pretty authentic. The chicken is served with pickled daikon. Each chicken was breaded with a thick batter and coated in the sauce we got. The sauce we chose is like a gochujang sauce so if you like gochujang go for that. The flavor was good but I think I would prefer the honey garlic one a bit more so I'll go for that next time. The chicken was big and juicy. It is a generous serving! The mandoo was small but I really enjoyed the flavor of them and they were fried. Overall a great first time, I'll have to come back to try the other flavors to compare. read more

Also got the 7 piece GIMMARI which is deep fried glass noodles in nori and they chicken rice bowl. Went all out because it was a first time try. The highlight from our order was the Yang nyeom just the sweet taste made the chicken enjoyable. The deep fried glass noodles was different, and won't be ordering that again. French fries were cooked perfectly and blazing hot. Love it. The chicken was fried fresh and served hot. Needs work: The chicken appears to be bought frozen and already breaded and just fried at the location. Pre-made, frozen meats all taste the same. Unimpressed. The Hellfire sauce seemed to be just sweet Asian bbq sauce with something in it to make it brutally spicy. It was extremely spicy but lacked definitive flavor, a pepper or something to enhance the fire. It was fine, at best. The price is steep for pre-breaded chicken fingers but I've seen higher cost for worse food on the island too. My fiancé and I have been wanting to try Soul Chicken for quite sometime now, since we pass it pretty often. It's located in the complex across the river from Dillingham Plaza (where Chuck E Cheese's is). For a better reference, it's a few doors down from H&R Block. At first glance, it looks like a small stand... but don't let that fool you! You can park directly in the complex. We ordered our food online. Personally, I recommend to do this since it's a stand right off the street. If I'm not mistaken, I believe there's one table with a set of chairs that people can sit on, but otherwise, that is all. I recommend online or phone ordering because you may not want to stand around (I'm also not sure how long they take to prepare an order provided in-person). We ordered the wasabi mayo 12 piece bone-in fried chicken and the chicken salad. The fried chicken comes with a full cup of sauce on the side. Chicken was crispy, juicy, and paired really well with the sauce. The chicken salad had some fried chicken pieces on top of a bed of lettuce, bell peppers (red, green, orange, and yellow), tomato, and cucumber. The salad normally comes with a honey mustard dressing, but I requested for ranch. Upon online ordering, our order took about 20 minutes to be ready. Pick up was very easy, and the cashier was friendly. Overall, we paid about $35 for the chicken and the salad. Personally, it's a bit more expensive than other chicken places I've tried, but the sauce was great! We'll definitely be back to try the other flavors AND the chicken sandwich on the menu. read more

After I had the real deal the first time I was in heaven so I have to compare every place I try to that fried chicken. (Long time friend of mines mom made it ). This place definitely gets my approval stamp. It reminded me of hers!! The Yangnyeom chicken has always been the best and Soul does it justice ! It was crunchy and I mean BIG crunchy. Tender on the inside. I have to say though something was missing... it was still good and the sauce on that beautiful chicken was yummy but the chicken was still missing some kind of pop! You can't go wrong with Korean fried chicken... I happen to stomp upon this place located in a plaza right by Costco. The lady that serviced us was suuuuper friendly and welcoming. I ordered the spicy fried chicken bowl and the fried chicken was nice and crispy. The seasoning was sweet and spicy, making you drool for more. This place is definitely unassuming tucked into a karaoke lounge when I stopped by while running errands a little after noon. My friend and I tried each of the chicken sandwich options. The mild chicken sandwich was flavorful and definitely not dry at all. The deep fried glass noodles in seaweed were a fun addition to my meal. The woman who helped us was very attentive and made us feel welcome. Their Halloween decor solidified that this is a fun spot. It seems like nearby construction is taking a toll on this fledgling spot. I will be back to Soul Chicken! read more
