We decided to sit outside and dine because it was literally below 0. I ordered the 2 piece whole catfish dinner with cabbage and white beans, my husband got the rainbow trout with zucchini. Our food was pretty good. Only thing is was that my sides were cold. My fish was piping hot but it was almost as if they played my food while they waited for the fish to cook. The last thing I was expecting to see on the menu at a soul food restaurant in Memphis was a Cuban sandwich, so of course, I had to order it! The review: it wasn't half bad! The pork was marinated well, and the ham was juicy...so juicy it dripped all over my plate! I found it a bit strange that in addition to mustard, the sandwich was paired with mayo, a first for my taste buds. The Swiss cheese was melted nicely binding the meats to the pickles and the bread. And the bread? Well, what can I say? The bread is always hard to perfect unless you're in Tampa or Miami. Came here (October 25) with friends for a birthday dinner and the food was delicious! When we arrived we were seated immediately and the wait staff was very attentive. I ordered the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer and the catfish platter (small) that came with 2 pieces of fish, 2 sides (I ordered black-eyed peas and fried okra), and a few hush-puppies. SOUL FISH! In town for a night visiting my father at Regional One and we had to find a good local place to eat. A friend suggested Soul Fish and we were glad we tried it. It got the fried pickles to start and they were so good. It was more of a cornmeal breading and it was a nice little change compared to most places that use a thick breading. The table ordered catfish, fish tacos, and the mahi mahi sandwich. It was all very good. The portions were large. I think my mom and my child could have split the kids catfish plate! The service was quick and polite. I ordered the grilled red trout, subbed out corn bread for 3 hush puppies, and had a side of green beans. My sister had the grilled catfish tacos which came with a red salsa and some guac with a side of Mac n cheese. At the end I added a slice of caramel pecan pie. I thought my red trout was seasoned and cooked well (meaning not too salty and not over cooked). The green beans looked fresh and not canned. The green beans could have used some seasoning though. The hush puppies are true perfect size and are sweeter and not dry which is how I like them. They were a bit greasy though so either the oil wasn't hot enough or no one hit the hush puppies with paper towels before serving. My sister said her tacos were bland but the guac was too salty. I came here for dinner with my boyfriend after helping him move into town (we're both from the midwest). Neither of us realized how big this place was based on the outside, but it's huge! I'm not sure if it was our midwestern tastebuds, but holy cow is the food here salty! The salmon was unbearably salty, the pork chop was rock hard, and the fried catfish was just okay. We took back a lot of leftovers and were able to easily finish off the catfish, but finishing the salmon was a real battle. We gave up on the pork chop for the sake of our jaws. The sides were decent though! My favorites were the hushpuppies and fried okra. My boyfriend really liked the mac n' cheese. However, it's not worth it to go back just for the sides. Soul Fish Cafe wasn't a place that I expected to go to, but after recommendations by a lot of people (training instructor, hotel staff, etc), some coworkers and I gave it a go. We were not disappointed at all! The wait was only 15-20 minutes for a table of 6 on a Wednesday night at 7PM-ish. CRAWFISH BISQUE: probably the least well-received menu item during dinner. Two coworkers and I got it and their first reaction was "it's lukewarm". We all pretty much expected it to be really hot but it wasn't. The flavors were all still there- spicy and tasty- but the desired temperature wasn't. SOUL FISH PLATTER: I chose the soul fish platter to get a bit of everything and did not regret it. Still much too much food for me but I made a good attempt to finish everything. I don't generally eat a lot of fried seafood but every bit of it was good. Paired with their Louisiana hot sauce and the sauce- yum! PECAN PIE A LA MODE: I wish I had a dessert stomach. The BEST pecan pie I had during my stay in Memphis. Coworkers and I shared two pieces of pie- crust was amazing and the pecans still had a crisp that went well with the ice cream. Not extremely gooey, like Corky's is, and I prefer it this way. I went here for the first time today after driving past it for years. I was not disappointed! I ordered take out. It was waiting for me and I showed up early. I ordered the shrimp po boy. I moved here from Louisiana and have been so disappointed by dry bread and tiny shrimp. The bread was soft, the shrimp were huge and seasoned well- not too much breading, and juicy. Best of all NO PICKLES. Roumalade served on the side but ample quantity and great tasting. I ordered sweet potato fries as my side dish. The staff is courteous and the restaurant is very clean. So I visited this restaurant 3 times in a course of 2 weeks. I first had a catfish basket. Next a ceasar salad with grilled catfish. Lastly a catfish po'boy sandwich. The salad was my favorite and will probably become my go-to if returning. The po'boy came with a huge fillet and the mac and cheese side was good one visit and lacked many things the next. The catfish basket really didn't do anything for me. Maybe because the basket did not have the same kind of catfish as the other things I tried. I do believe this was the swai fish instead. Ordered Take-Out. They charged a 10% tip fee which I think is price gouging since they did not have to clean a table or wash a dish. Just prepared the food and gave it to me in a bag. Even If you count the styrofoam containers it is still gouging. The catfish was good but the forced tip left a bad taste in my mouth. I gave it 3 stars because the food was good but I will probably avoid this restaurant in the future. Price gouging is always a sign of hidden problems. Even on a Friday date night at 7:00 p.m. there were less than 10 diners there.
