I hate to complain for sure but I would not recommend this cafe! Unfortunately they just opened in west mobile and I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt but just want others to know my thoughts. Today I ordered fried pork chop, candied yams, loaded potato salad, collard greens, banana pudding, and blackberry cobbler (was told it was blueberry)! The pork chop tasted ok, cold but ok. The candied yams were out of the can with a bitter sweetness of honey or syrup, I truly could not identify. They were too bitter to enjoy. The greens were tough and seasoned with some type of hot sauce that took away from the natural taste of homecooked greens. The loaded potato salad, well....just stay away. Cobbler was just down right disgusting as in not even edible. The banana pudding was pudding out of the can with black bananas and soggy nilla wafers. This was my first order and will be my last one. However, if their cafe lasts for any length of time and I see plenty of patrons, I may be willing to try again but that will be no time soon. I like to support local business but I want what I pay for to be palatable. read more

The staff were very friendly. The food was ok,. Country fried steak was the dollar store version from a frozen bag, was hoping for freshly made food. Collard greens were good, but potatoes and gravy had little flavor. I was charged a 10% "service fee", that states on the receipt is for parties over 0? Forced tip? Over $45 for meat and three plates for two people, that seemed to be canned or frozen, pre-made items except maybe the collards. Probably won't be back though. read more

We had fried fish and grilled fish. Both were good. Also had the grits and some greens. The grits were good. I do not recommend the cheese grits though. The greens weren't bad. They had a little sweetness to it. The green beans were not my favorite either. The Mac and cheese was okay. The candy yams were okay. They are really nice and really sweet.. Food and service are horrible. Ordered a plate for take out over the phone. As I was pulling out of the parking lot, an employee ran out and got me. Told me I had to come back inside and bring the plate that I got. Turns out they forgot to cook the chicken they served me. So they replaced it with the nastiest overcooked chicken I've ever had. Food truck came to our job yesterday worst $14 I spent that shrimp po boy I got was awful. Whatever oil was used is why that shrimp tasted so bad. Also my fries were barely cooked. This little place next to a gas station is a must try to southern breakfast favs, namely the fish and grits. I've heard good things about them for years but just never go by there until a couple of weeks ago. Outside the windows are covered with stuff so you gotta take a chance and go through the door. There are a few small tables, but takeout and delivery are the most popular according to some regulars. They have a big list of southern food options for breakfast, lunch and dinner but I was just there for fish and grits. It was Friday, so you know what's up in the south with fish and grits on Fridays. The staff at the counter was ok. Nothing special. You order she asked how you want your eggs; Texas toast, white or wheat; grits with cheese or without. Wait time was about average for fish. And the portions were very generous, it was enough to share. I'll definitely check them out again. read more

Food tastes cold, subpar at best. I would definitely eat at a drive thru before I'd go here ever again. It was cold and tastes days old.

No stars for the atmosphere. None for the plastic and foam "dishes" either. But the food? OMG it's great! And the prices? Five more stars. It's beside a gas station, and all of the windows are covered over. It looks more like a billboard, and certainly didn't look open. So gad we went inside (with our pants up, see photo). Loved the grilled catfish, and the cheesy grits. Who wants fiaf-and-grits for breakfast? Yes, please! Ma enjoyed her pancakes and eggs. Hubby loved, loved, loved his fried giblets! The food was tasty. The service friendly. There were 4 or 5 3-tops inside, I presume most of their orders are takeaway. And they cater. Delish food, great prices, served in a drab, depressing hole-in-the-wall. C'mon people, take the stickers off at least one of the windows so us customers can see inside! This is a hidden gem. Starting with the good. The meatballs were tasty. And that's about it. Fact: had a party at my home Fact: I opted not to pay to have the food served at my party. Fact: when caterer arrived, they wanted me to meet them in the alley to get the food since I didn't "pay to have it served" Fact: I paid a $75 deposit to rent 2 chaffing dishes, but she only left one. Fact: after one of my other words commenting about her being lazy, she starts yelling in my house. Fact: her helper appeared to be a teenaged child - is that even legal? This person came to my home and acted a fool while I'm trying to entertain corporate and government official - that part doesn't matter a ton but it was super embarrassing to think I let someone like this in my home. This was a complete waste of money and I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone even if it's FREE. read more

Went today after hearing it was good from others. (However, person told me after the fact to only go when the owner was cooking. She was not today.) Anyway, I ordered chicken and dumplings. I opened the plate and there was NO broth to be seen. Never saw chicken and dumplings like this. It was the texture of cornbread dressing. Tasted horrible. I asked the young gentleman that was working if I could try another dish. He was very accommodating and let me try the pork chops. It was okay. Overly seasoned. Way too much salt. My sides were yams and a side salad. They were okay. My friend that was with me tried baked chicken, macaroni and greens. She said her sides were okay but when she got to the middle of her chicken breast, it was very pink inside. This was my first and last visit. The kids couldn't agree on where to eat, so we said, "The next place we see, we're going to." We are glad we stumbled into this one! Definitely soul food so be ready for a nap afterward. The greens were perfect, and all of the kids liked their food (biscuits and gravy, a juicy burger, and chicken tenders). My husband and I tried the grilled pork chop and the roast beef and rice. The pork chop was great! The roast beef was good, but the only two negatives were that it was a bit lacking in flavor and both it and the rice needed to be cooked longer. That was the only meal we were not 100% satisfied with, so still giving 4 stars! Also, the man working the register was very friendly and helpful. Oh, and try the red velvet cake! read more

I'm always scoping out places that have good country cooking. After seeing an article on Soul Heaven Cafe in Mobile Bay Magazine, I knew it was worth checking out. This restaurant did not let me down! In fact, I went twice in one week, and I'm considering going back tomorrow to check out their chicken and dressing. Is that stalkerish? I hope not. Anyway, on the first visit I had country fried steak, mashed potatoes with gravy and mac and cheese. It was good, and the mashed potatoes were real, not flakes. I was craving good county cooking again yesterday and ended up ordering the fried chicken. After the first bite, I thought back to a time when my daughter decided to become a vegetarian until I brought home fried chicken. I heard this squeaky, slurping noise and looked over to see her spinning a chicken leg around sucking meat off the bone as fast as she could. She was her mother's child! That's probably what I sounded like in there yesterday. Don't care. At all. O.M.G!!! Gus who? It was SO good! It was like my grandmother used to fry it. I immediately sent my husband a text and told him to stop by on his way home from work and try it. He doesn't listen, but it's his loss. Trust me, it's good! The only thing better than the chicken is the service. I was very impressed! Everyone working there was so nice, friendly and helpful, including the owners two young sons. I'm a mom. Moms always pay attention to polite, respectful and hard working kids like those boys. The prices are reasonable too. I paid about $10 for a meat and two sides with a cornbread roll. The menu changes slightly daily, and she posts the specials on her Facebook page. This restaurant is in the Texaco shopping center on Moffett Road, just East of 65. It is not a food bar in the Texaco. It's a small little cafe with about 5 or 6 tables that will seat 2-3 people at each table. It's a nice quiet lunch spot through the week, and probably my new favorite place. read more

This is a hidden spot. Right next to a gas station so you could miss it. We were looking specifically for chicken and waffles. The menu is very extensive. You can get your fill of southern food for sure! If you're looking to be served this is not the spot. You order at the counter pick what you want cafeteria style they serve it to you and you eat out of your Styrofoam box with your plastic fork. We dWe had the chicken and waffles, I had a side of greens and my husband had a side of grits. The chicken and waffles come with eggs. You get three wings, or to peg legs and a wing. The waffles were very spongy, so I sent mine back and asked that they leave it on the griddle a bit longer so that it could be crunchy. They obliged quickly. Everything was sweet! It taste like sugar was in the greens... But I'm sure they wouldn't put sugar in the greens, right? But they were sweet. They were still good and I ate them all. The lemonade was so sweet that I wanted water added to it. The sweet tea that my husband had was also extremely sweet. Just be aware of that. Lil Mama was at the counter and waited on us. She was very friendly, very nice and accommodating. And she had on a hair net which I appreciate! There were a lot of other options that were available but we stuck with our first choice. The prices are very inexpensive. For both of our breakfast orders plus greens plus corn bread and two drinks it was under $23. There are only about five tables that seat two people each so it's not a spot for big group, however they do cater. The decor is very basic. They try to add a splash of color with some Mardi Gras color netting but, it is what it is. The food is the star here not the decor. The restaurant was clean as well as the restrooms. The fried chicken is delicious! The four stars is for that reason more than anything else.Get some to go. read more

Food is just delicious! I'm in Mobile one for a short while and I wanted something that was filling and that was tasty. Consulted with Yelp and found this place decided I'd give it a try. Glad I did. The food is wonderful. Staff are even better! I would've taken a picture of my food however once that broccoli from the vegetable medley I order hit my tongue it was a wrap. A wonderfully quaint restaurant that specializing in all types of soul food and desserts. We stopped in for breakfast after reading Ashley H.'s review and wasn't disappointed. Expect a warm welcome as soon as you open the door by the owner, Ms. Lillie or any of her hard working staff. Also, Ms. Lillie is one of the most jovial people I've met in Mobile and acknowledged everyone as soon as they stepped through the door. We placed our order (me: steak & egg omelette w/ breakfast potatoes & Don C.: chicken & waffles) and Ms. Lillie took the time to explain her fried chicken is made from scratch and takes about 10-15 minutes to fry up. That was non-issue, as we weren't in a rush. When the food did come out we were heaven. Everything was cooked perfectly and Don's chicken was everything we expected, and then some! Be sure to ask for a bottle of chicken crack. It's meant for fried chicken but I added some to my omelette and diced potatoes. They serve an array of teas & lemonade and we opted for mango lemonade and strawberry lemonade. Ms Lillie made sure we had refills before leaving which was kind and thoughtful, as we had a long day ahead of us. They have delicious breakfast. I had pancakes and sausage with eggs. Good flavor. I went with 5 other people and we had to put 3 tables together. It's a small place with about 4 tables inside. This place was okay. I've had better. I ordered the chicken and waffle with a side of candied yams. I received 3 small wings sections, a waffle, what looked like 1 scrambled egg, and the side of candied yams. The fried chicken wings were definitely the best thing on my plate. They were delicious. The waffle was decent but was very "dough-y". I asked for scrambled eggs with cheese, and I received just the scrambled egg without any cheese. And we're just going from best to worst because the candied yams were not good at all. They weren't sweet, and I just couldn't eat more than a couple bites. I've been to several soul food places all over the south, and this one just wasn't remotely competitive. The prices are dirt cheap, which was great, but you get what you pay for. The people who work there seem very sweet and the service was quick, but the food, well what I ordered, just wasn't that great... except the wings... the wings were yummy. read more

OMG! I'm from Mobile, AL. But I reside in Panama City Beach, FL. I worked with the owner over the phone to plan a birthday party for my mom. Everything was done over phone conversations. I have to say...The day of the party, I was honestly amazed at how wonderful the catering service was. The food was...I have no words to really explain. The food was amazing! It was everything she explained it would be over the phone. It is the day after the party and we are still getting phone calls about how GREAT the food was! The service was beyond our expectations. I contacted the business to cater a local family event. The owner responded promptly and was eager to accommodate my function given such a limited notice (approx. one week). The order was to feed a prospective of 20 people. Unfortunately, the food was not met with the satisfaction the owner proclaimed. (Menu: baked chkn, pot roast, rice & gravy, peas, collard greens, cornbread muffins & layered lemon cake). The cake crust was hard and was not moist, the cornbread muffin similar in that they were also hard, the baked chicken could have used more baking as the skin was rather raw, the collards were not fresh but rather "doctored" canned greens. The tea and lemonade was saturated with sugar. I understand people have different palate and some things are excusable but I was most disappointed in management's response to my feedback. The owner, Ms McCoy contacted the following day inquiring about the service but became defensive when given feedback. Not to mention, she actually addressed me, the customer about an error an employee made in giving incorrect flatware. The lady who served me at pick up was most cordial and helpful. It is the owner who displayed disregard for her employees by justifying that her absence was reason for the food dissatisfaction. Let me say interaction such as this makes it difficult to support our entrepreneurs and gives reason why I give a "one star" rating. When we conduct good business, it speaks for itself and we do not have to self-proclaim it. read more
