I don't know happened to this place. I've been eating here since they opened in the late 80's and it was always delicious. The last 2x I've ordered the baked potato was 1/2 then 1/4 of the size it used to be. The potato on my last order was missing the bacon ENTIRELY and was incredibly stingy on everything else, even the butter! I then got violently ill for 3 hours. Wife and I went to the Soul man bbq on Davis Blvd in North Richland Hills, Tx Saturday night. They were not busy but had a lot of product sitting out on a cutting board. Person behind the counter took our order. Ordered side and went to the register to pay. Person working the registr did not say anything about a senior discount so I asked I was told that it was all ready rung up in he register and could not be change. So we payed full cost. Knife dispenser was empty so had to go ask some one to get some knifes. Sat down to eat product was not hot at all and at best was luke warm. This is not right and can make customer sick. Today the bbq beef isn't as tender as it used to be and yet again the jalapeño beans had no flavor as if it was just dumped out of a can and warmed up to serve, the bbq sauce was very cool and not hot (temperature) like it used to be, the Tx toast was from a warmer that was soggy and limp not crispy and warm. I didn't realize Soulman's was a chain until my GPS took me en route to this one and I passed two other locations. Perhaps that is because once I saw their brisket and ribs I had tunnel vision. It could also be that their spicy barbecue sauce had me at 'hello' with Lionel Ritchie on the radio as I pulled into their parking lot. Regardless, I think Soulman's does a great job of cranking out quality. The order was about $46 for two of their 2 meat plates, two drinks, a single meat plate and a side of banana pudding. We wanted to get a little of everything because when in Dallas, you get barbecue! The meat order included chopped brisket/smoked sausage/ smoked turkey/ribs. Their ribs had a beautiful bark and the brisket was moist. The sides were macaroni and cheese/okra/spicy potatoes/fried cabbage. I couldn't understand why everyone didn't get the fried cabbage!? There were pieces of smoked sausage and bell peppers fried in with the cabbage. It was everything my road trip heart asked for. The okra was perfectly crisp and not oily. Every member of staff I encountered answered my questions, I think I had twenty. I asked about the barbecue sauce, spices in the sides, the banana pudding and I'm sure they knew I wasn't from around here. I had so much food left over I had a whole spread for the next day. Extremely bland food. Really found it hard to u set stand why it was a "must eat" of Dallas. The ribs were dry and tasteless. When I tried to at something they said "they are k my cooked with salt and pepper, there really isn't anything special about them." We also had the frontier fries which were dry and tasteless and looked nothing like the pictures. The BBQ sauce provided had entirely too much sugar and made all our stomached hurt. I've only eaten at 2 of their restaurants, the Garland location and the Mesquite location. The Garland location is great. They're always very friendly, the restaurant is always clean...they have a "we collect the trash from the tables" policy and they usually get to it pretty quickly. I'm a brisket guy, and their brisket is awesome. I usually get a Soulmans sandwich with brisket, and it will fill you up. Better than other Soulman's BBQ locations. Food: They surprisingly let me order the kid's plate which consists of one protein and one side. I got the pulled pork, green beans, and an additional side of creamed corn. The pulled pork is the slightest bit dry but nothing BBQ sauce can't fix. Green beans were a little too salty and mushy for my taste, however, the creamed corn is absolutely amazing - there's a great balance of sweet and the tiniest bit of spicy. I tried a chunk of my boyfriend's portion of mac & cheese, but it wasn't anything to die for; slightly bland. Environment: Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of the actual restaurant location since there's a lot of construction that needs to be done around this area. If you like cabbage, they have a really good spicy cooked cabbage that is just delicious. Sizeable portions of meats, and excellent sweet tea. On fridays they have catfish too. This restaurant caught my eye in the way that all barbecue places do. We tried it out and were pleased. This spot has about 8 booths and 8 tables and while we were there I noticed that they do a lot of carryout business too. The service set up is typical of this type of restaurant. You get your tray and go through the line to pick your choice of meat and your sides. You actually serve yourself on the sides. And these good people do have sweet tea and complimentary ice cream cones. One thing, there isn't a roll of paper towels at each table. Make sure to grab your napkins with your silverware so that you're not going back and forth. The pulled pork combo is a delicious, inexpensive deal because you get your choice of 2 sides and it comes with a drink for only $7.99. The 1/2 slab plate gets 2 sides and Texas toast, drink not included for $13.99. The pulled pork is really good. The ribs are tender but not impressive. Customer service is good here. I tried fried cabbage out of curiosity. It's good but it tastes like boiled cabbage to me, it's a little spicy. The cabbage is seasoned with jalapeños. The "spicy" potatoes are tasty but I didn't think they were spicy at all just very well seasoned. I wouldn't bother with the ribs here but I will definitely go back. Really kinda bummed. I travel from WI to spend time with family in TX and always want good BBQ. I drove the 15mins to get family food and my sliced brisket was half meat and half fat once I got home. The young lady cutting obviously didn't look at the meat. AWFUL RIBS. 1/2 Rack of ribs were burned and meat was tough. Taste was horrible, tasted like charcoal lighter fluid. Could not taste the flavor of the meat. Double barrel baked potato very good, nice and tender, the skin is not tough or burnt as I've experienced at other places and you get plenty of meat.The people are very friendly, willing to talk to you about their product. There seems to be a nice friendly rapport with the people working behind the line and that's a really good thing when you're in close quarters. That being said, regrettably the potato was the only true Saving Grace. The macaroni and cheese was watery and running. The fried okra was somewhat overdone and dry, very bland. The cream corn pretty decent but it's missing something possibly a little bit of fresh pepper and I don't mean the kind that you get pre-ground. The barbecue sauce is too sweet but it does have a nice lite kick. As for the pulled pork it seemed to be okay. The brisket however was somewhat bland and could use some flavoring and possibly even be cooked hotter near the end to crisp up the outer part of the meat. It almost reminds me of the briskets you get from the supermarket deli. The tea was pretty weak so I opted for a soda. Also, even though I'm not a fan of country music it was a little bit too loud, it should be an accent to complement the surroundings and should not be blaring. All in all, it's not a really bad place or meal for the price. But some tweaking would definitely be a good thing one major tweak is do not use pre-packaged frozen okra if possible or find a fresher source. Also, thicken the mac and cheese up a little bit because it's more like mac and cheese soup. read more

Yes, I will admit my mouth is forever biased to my daddy's bbq goodness at home, but I still give this place a thumbs up. Tenderrrr ribs! The only bad thing about our meal of 2 pounds of luscious ribs was the Nancy Grace playing over pop's shoulder that I had to watch.
