They brought the rice out first and it sat for a while, then the noodles, and those sat for a while. We came here on a Saturday evening. The place was clean and busy, but we were seated immediately. We ordered a shrimp pho, the "shaken" pho, truffle fries, iced coffee, and a green Thai iced tea. Made the trek out here just for the Beef rib pho. I have been seeing it everywhere and wanted to get my hands on it. It was impressive and intimidating at the same time. The pho broth is amazing and I would definitely come back for the Pho. The beef rib for me was more a novelty item and great for IG but it is not easy to eat at all. The meat was soft but it wasn't falling off the bone tender so you would have to gnaw at the bone if you want the meat. It was also A LOT of meat that I was so full that I couldnt finish it. Really hard to find a great Pho spot in Downey or even close to Downey. This is probably one of my favorite spots. The broth is perfect with the right amount of flavors and it is very light. I was craving some Pho as the weather was slightly colder today. Soup Shop appears to have been open recently, so I wanted to check it out. The interior is sleek, modern, and noticeably clean. There was a sign in front of the door to first go to the cash register to be seated. However, when I went to the cash register, the waiter was being short with me (he was short in height too). Anyhow, he said that "we are not open yet....we open at 11am." I replied that it was 11am. He was really rude about it. The front doors were open into the restaurant and I was not wrong. Next time you want to say the restaurant is not open yet, you should probably check the time first before insulting your customer. After that rude exchange, I was then seated at my table. I already knew what I wanted to eat since I looked at the menu before arriving at the restaurant. I ordered their Pho Rib Eye. Their Pho was pretty good, although it was pretty pricey Pho at $13.95 + tax. The soup was super warm as steam was pronouncedly emanating from the bowl. I wanted to connect to the internet since my phone reception was not strong in the restaurant. I asked this same waiter if I could get the WiFi password. He said that only the owner has the WiFi password. I guess NO WiFi for the customers it is. The food was good, but the service could be markedly improved. When I first walked in there, I felt like I was at a 711 with the doorbell ringing, which was weird for me and they asked me if I'm gonna sit down or do a takeout. Such a delicious Vietnamese eatery that is open late and located a quick car ride away from Commerce Casino! Soup Shop is a sit-down, casual spot that serves fried rice, noodle soups, a variety of drinks, and other Asian fusion cuisine. I ordered the Horchata Pandan to drink and it was ridiculously good - if it weren't almost midnight, I would have snagged a second one for the drive home (I was going back and forth on this for 15 minutes, should've ordered it). They don't have Thai Tea, but they do have an Iced Green Tea alternative with cream. Green tea is caffeinated, so I opted to skip it. I ordered the Crispy Spam Fried Rice and Crispy Egg Rolls, as well. The egg rolls come with pork and are two for $5, but they're pretty thick and delicious. The fried rice was huge - good for 2-4 to share, depending on what else you order. For us two, this was more than enough food. We ended up taking half of the fried rice home. OVERALL This is a good new find in South Gate when I have a craving for pho & other Vietnamese dishes! I would definitely recommend this place for a filling lunch option; however, if you are a big meat eater I would suggest adding an extra side of meat. ENVIRONMENT The shop was super cute inside (7/23/21). A flatscreen TV. Barstool seating, some regular tables too, but no outdoor dining. It's in the same plaza as Aldi and several other eateries. SERVICE The first employee was a bit shy and did not want to give me a recommendation. Not sure why. All I asked was how the oxtail was. The second employee suggested that the pho oxtail was one of their best options. MY FAVORITE PART... The oxtail! Plus the recyclable containers (no styrofoam)! NOT SO FAVORITE PART... The chili sauce they provided in a small container. It had a grainy paste texture that didn't seem mixed properly. I liked the kick, but it didn't good alone or with pieces of the oxtail. If a sauce by itself doesn't taste good, it's a simple no-go for me. THE GRUB Pho oxtail ($16.48 including tax). The broth was a bit mild in flavor, but I made it back home with it still piping hot. I thought some of the veggies could have been a bit more fresh namely the cilantro. The jalapeños were amazingly spicy! Let me stop gatekeeping about this place! My go-to Pho place is here, from the food to the service, I can't complain! My go to's are the Pho Combination and a Honey Jasmine tea! Can't go wrong with that. Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Ambiance is very nice and chill. Good for a date night or friend group. Very clean and the staff is attentive.
