Best in the whole area! Hainan Chicken was cooked just right (not over or under done). The fried chicken with the nasi lemak had such a nice thin crispy coating and juicy meat that it reminded me of Lobak from Malaysia. The BEST way to close out my 2023! Southeast Impression did not disappoint and I'm sad that my SO and I did not have any more room in our stomachs to try more dishes. We drove down to VA just for this meal and it was so worth it. Street parking near the restaurant is hard to find, but you can always park in the lot closer to Giant and walk over. Hands down, my favorite dish was the chef's special - Singaporean Chili Crab. We got the softshell version and could barely stop ourselves from licking the plate clean. It had just the right amount of spice and flavor that went well with everything - the buns, rice, etc! We also ordered the Hainese Chicken on rice (superb, loved how juicy the chicken was and how rich the rice was) and a curry laksa. Although I had zero room in my stomach after this feast, I did order the pandan castella cake to go. Fun fact: the pastry chef who makes this grows their own pandan leaves! For appetizers, we ordered the beef satay & spicy mackerel salad. Really enjoyed the beef satay & the peanut dipping sauce was excellent. However, $12 for 3 small skewers is too pricey. The salad was light & refreshing with very strong fish sauce flavor. If you're not a fan of fish sauce (nuoc cham), then you won't like this. The mackerel was definitely from a can & would be better if it was fresh. For entrees, we ordered beef drunken noodles & chicken red curry. Loved both! We are very picky with our drunken noodles & they were outstanding here. Perfectly sauced & nicely browned from the wok. The red curry was also good. Loved the big pumpkin chunks in it. My only complaint is that it's a bit too sweet. We would have loved to try the mango sticky rice for dessert but they were out of it. I didn't make reservations for the 3 of us, but I got here a little before they open at noon and there was already a line waiting up. However, we got seated right away with a note that there is a 2 hour time limit for the table, which makes sense since they do get busy. The menu is quite comprehensive with plenty of options. We all ordered Thai coffees and they were sweet but not overly so. For appetizers, we ordered chive pancakes, roti canai with a lentil dip, chicken curry puffs, and fried pork crisps. All the appetizers were good. The chive pancakes were uniquely shaped in triangles, which was surprising, but I enjoyed them. They were crispy and flavorful. For mains, we ordered the Chilean sea bass, chili crab, and pad Thai. A friend that went there before noted they sell out of the chili crab, so we made sure to put an order for that right away. All the mains were sooo scrumptious. The chili crab is A LOT of food, so have an appetite if ordering it. It's also a bit messy, but they provide gloves, bib, and shell cracker.. if you're wearing white, and order this, you've been warned lol FYI parking can get confusing. This is definitely a vibey restaurant with waiters dressed in white dress shirts and decor that gives spot-on "Hey AI make an interior design for a restaurant that looks upscale and serves pan Southeast Asian food while still looking familiar for Northern Virginia" with somewhat edgy flavors since Malaysian restaurants are rare in the DMV area. *Mee Goreng: I've had this dish at different restaurants, this version is noticeably toned down. There isn't the intense dark charred texture or flavor, it seems to be more mild and almost more similar to a pad see ew. I would call this "pleasant". *Curry Laksa: I've also had this dish at different restaurants, and while the Southeast Impression version isn't terrible, it's again toned down. I'm not getting the intense flavor of dried shrimp or belacan (shrimp paste) that this dish sometimes has. Great for beginners, but it comes across as a mild curry noodle soup here. *Pineapple Fried Rice: We mostly ordered this upon request of a less adventurous diner in our party. It .. tastes exactly like you would imagine. Easy to eat, mild flavor, nothing too exciting, quite Westernized. *Hainanese Chicken on Rice: This boiled chicken comes with rice on the side actually (which is better). Chicken is completely de-boned, and there is skin. Texture is extremely moist and juicy. There's also a trio of dipping sauce including ginger/garlic, sambal, and I believe soy - the dipping sauces were outstanding and beautifully complemented the chicken in their own ways. *Chilean Sea Bass with Assam Curry: This is a tamarind flavored fish curry. The fish appears to be boneless deep fried pieces which is really convenient for less adventurous diners, the crispy texture is delicious, and the flavor of the curry is "different" enough to appeal to more adventurous diners like myself. I was quite shocked at how the restaurant ran out of mango sticky rice by 7pm on a Saturday!!! In general the pricing here is not horribly expensive but if you have an appetite you may want to order 1-2 more entrees relative to the number of guests in your party. We had a party of four, ordered five entrees, and honestly could have eaten more. I would say the Chilean sea bass is pricey for the size of the order. I haven't been to Malaysia, yet having visited Malaysian restaurants in other US cities, Southeast Impressions doesn't live up. If you've had this type of food in cities like LA, NYC, Philly, this here ain't it. However Southeast Impressions is a pleasant experience with beautiful presentation, good vibes, and "just" enough flavor to remind you that this is Malaysian food. Food: Having grown up in Singapore most of my life, I was very excited that there was a new Singapore / Malaysian restaurant in the area. Food was rather pricy (25 for entrees), but the quality was so justified for its price. Roti Canai was so flaky and crispy, and the chicken rice was as authentic as it can be when compared to chicken rice in Singapore. It was perfectly tender and soaked in the soy sauce, but I wished the rice had a little more ginger taste to it, but I'm guessing there is a little tweak due to the audience and customers. The inside was amazingly furnished, the utensils were very high end, and even the menus were well thought out as they were leather bound. The service was super friendly and helpful, especially with giving out recommendations. But the food was definitely the highlight of this meal. Every item on there was amazing with the Curry Laksa being a particular favorite. Although, I will note that the Beef Rendang was a little too heavy for one person to eat. Since it wasn't too busy, they let us stay for over 3 hours, catching up, which we really appreciated. We ordered Roti Canai and Fried Calamari for appetizers. Pineapple Fried Rice, Mee Goreng, Chilean Sea Bass, and Singapore Chili Crab for the main dishes. We ordered two portions of each dish since we had 10 people. All the food was good. Our favorites were Roti Canai and Singapore Chili Crab. The portions were good. All of us were full. The waiter, Marcus, was very attentive and friendly. We brought a cake to celebrate my friends' birthday. Marcus kept it in the fridge. After our meal, he brought it out and even lit the candles for us. I believe this restaurant is run by the same owners as Genki next door, so I was so excited to hear that it was southeast inspired! The restaurant decor was jungle themed with a very vibrant color palette of green and gold! The atmosphere was very lively and warm, honoring southeast Asian culture. The menu had Singaporean, Malaysian, and Thai cuisine with a lot of traditional and unique dishes. For starters, we got the roti canai, and the roti was amazingly fluffy and buttery and the dhal curry that went with it was delish. For entrees, I had to go with the Hainanese chicken and rice~ let me just say...absolutely amazing. The chicken was SO JUICY AND SOFT, and the sauce they pour over it was so flavorful yet light. They also gave sauces on the side to complement including ginger scallion oil and sweet chili sauce. I do wish they included a side of broth like traditional chicken and rice but it was still a perfectly tasting dish nonetheless. We also ordered the kway teow tom yum noodle soup and it was like pad thai flavor in soup form with pho noodles haha. It was decent, if you like pad thai and pho you will like this dish. My boyfriend liked it more than me. Ok but the best part was the dessert... their dessert menu is super unique!! I've been told that the chef's wife came up with most of the dessert recipes so you know it's authentic and made with love! We got the pandan castella cake and it was the most fluffy airy perfectly sweet cake I've ever had. ABSOLUTELY MUST GET!! I've been told the chefs wife grows their own pandan, so that's what they use to make this perfection of a cake!!! We also got the tortoise cakes and they were so colorful and fun to eat! Was so pleasantly surprised by this restaurant! It seems really busy. We came for dinner on Sunday ~6pm without a reservation but thankfully was able to sit down at a table with a 90 minute eating time. We ordered the beef satay to start and it was very yummy and juice. For mains we got the pineapple fried rice, tamarind shrimp, beef rendang, and drunken noodle. Service here is great. When the mains were served, we were asked if we wanted the spice rack and I said why not. That was a game changer. If you like spicy, I recommend you add some of the garlic chili sauce to the pineapple fried rice. It was so so good, I'm salivating just thinking about it. The tamarind shrimp was also very good, the sauce was delightful. The beef rendang tasted amazing as well and the drunken noodle didn't disappoint. Beautiful inside and a huge place! They have two bars inside and it's more cozy in the first section. Service was super fast (maybe a bit too fast). I tried the Thai tea which was good but not as sweet as most places so they definitely could have added more coconut milk. The food was delicious! I loved the fried okra and the sauce they served with it. The okra was barely fried and super fresh. I also tried the Tom kha soup which was a bigger serving than most places and tasted so good with a decent amount of spice. I also tried the cashew chicken which also was a massive serving and sooo good! It was crispy but had a really flavorful taste. I had the mee goreng noodles which was a smaller serving size than the other dishes but really tasty and the soy sauce they cooked it in was good. I came here early in the afternoon around 445 to order takeout, but decided to sit at the bar and have a drink rather than call my order in. Since this is a new restaurant I have ordered from here once before, but I wasn't familiar with all the dishes so I wanted to get a good idea of the menu I said at the bar and the bartender was amazing. I had a salted egg cream, Thai tea martini, and it was fantastic. It was a lot better than a espresso martini because it was lighter and not bitter. We had the duck curry, the roti, and other noodle dishes. The roti is fantastic. I cannot recommend it enough. I really hope this place does well. I grew up in Singapore, and this is the best restaurant in the DMV and arguably on the east coast that serves Singapore/Malaysian style foods. The service is top notch with the server checking in every now and then. Make sure you make a reservation on rest to ensure you get a table! My wife and I were there at 1.30pm on sat and we still had to wait. The Hainan chicken and their chili sauce is the highlight. Excellent chicken, well marinated and the chili really reminds me of the flavors of home. The chicken satay is amazing for US standards. It's probably the average standard I can get in Singapore. The laksa soup is legit, probably above average compared to what you can get in Singapore, and that's saying a lot. Their noodles are not good but the soup, wow! Roti canai is very good too, just the right balance between crispy and soft. Cons: this place is expensive, comparable to the izakaya next door, around $25 per entree on average. You do get what you pay for and it beats going up to NYC or flying back to Singapore for a proper meal. A 10/10 restaurant for Singaporean food. I will be back! read more

First of all, I encourage yall to get a reservation. When I tried to eat here before they were completely booked up. And trust me, you're gonna wanna eat here. The place has good ambiance lighting, retro rattan chairs and cool decor. Service was excellent, we were checked on just enough, not too much or too little. We were there to celebrate so we indulged more than usual: on top of entrees we got drinks, apps and a dessert. I went for the tamarind old fashioned. I found it a bit disappointing, I couldn't really taste the zing of the tamarind, but other than that it was an excellent old fashioned. We got the grilled duck larb and chicken heart skewers for appetizers. Both were delicious. For entrees we got the tamarind shrimp (my husbands choice and very tasty) and Singapore chili crab (my choice and so flavorful! Dreamt about the left overs all day today then came home and ate them!). For dessert we shared the pandan crème brûlée which was about as good as a dessert can get. ordered: roti canai, chive pancakes, curry laksa, sambal stir fry, hainan chicken rice upscale restaurant in NoVA that offers flavors from Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore! there are over a hundred dishes on their menu, so it was hard to narrow it down to a few. our server was super attentive and simply the best. the hainan chicken was tender and served with ginger rice and an array of sauces. the sambal stir fry had shrimp, eggplant, okra, and onion. the sambal wasn't too spicy, and they were generous with the shrimp they put in. i'd skip on ordering the chive pancake tho, it doesn't honestly do a traditional scallion pancake justice. overall, i'm very IMPRESSED @eatwamburger on instagram read more

This is my favorite restaurant in the DMV area! I've frequented Southeast Impression a few times and my favorite items that I keep reordering are the tamarind shrimp, spicy vermicelli salad & the coconut jackfruit ice cream.
