Famous for its Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) with six protein fillings, the menu also includes dim sum, noodles, stir‑fried wok dishes, and Shanghai‑style appetizers. I especially liked the wonton and shumai, the thin delicate skin and fully filled filling made it delicious. To me the dumpling, although tasty and soupy, the skin was too thick. The string beans with garlic were also tasty and flavorful. The soy garlic wings were solid, and the fried chicken dumplings were enjoyable. I came here for lunch and it wasn't a bad choice. Located at Fair Oaks mall, this spot is a great stop for a bite as you shop. Our waiter, Abel, was so kind and absolutely amazing. I came here with a friend on a weeknight. I reviewed the menu and it is very similar to Din Tai Fung, which I am very familiar with and have tried when I visited Taipei many years ago. We were seated as soon as we arrived. Our server was really friendly and helped us choose what to order. We ordered Pork Xiao Long Bao and Pork & Truffle Xiao Long Bao. They both arrived steaming hot. We also shared a Pork Chop Fried Rice. Everything was good but maybe not as good as the international chain that they were trying to copy - but definitely good enough for my xiao long bao cravings. After about 17 minutes, we received a text that our table was ready. The hot & sour soup was solid and came in a large portion (for 2 people). The soup dumplings were okay and had a nice broth, but the wrappers were too thick (a common problem for soup dumplings). There a clear glass for the dumpling station and the fixtures are remnant of an upscale casual dining experience. The food overall was.... Just okay. Younger folks waiting tables and it is a little inconsistent. We ask for water and the waiter forgets. We asked for chopsticks and am told they have no more. Huh?!? No chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant?? To top it off another waiter comes by and brings chopsticks... Food- Overall the food is good. Enjoyed the wings, the string beans, sesame noodles, kung pao chicken. The Soup Dumplings, unfortunately were unevenly made. 2 had a good amount of soup in them but the other 4 had none...unfortunate. The taste is good...but you can't sell soup dumplings without soup. They were also out of pork chops as we wanted to order the pork chop fried rice so that was disappointing. Overall, 3.5 stars is a spot on rating. Service needs to tighten up and Mgmt needs to have a tighter grasp around inventory so they don't run out of dishes by 6pm. We ordered several dishes to share, and the standout starters were the string beans with garlic and the cucumber salad. The hot and sour soup was a pleasant surprise--very large and perfect for sharing. For entrees, we had chicken fried rice, chicken and broccoli, chicken soup dumplings, chicken kimchi dumplings, and regular chicken dumplings. The chicken dumplings were the clear favorite. The soup dumplings, however, didn't have much soup in them. The food overall was good, just not particularly memorable. I did like that dishes came out fresh as they were ready. Trying the new soup dumpling restaurant that many call a Din Tai Fung dupe. I have heard mixed reviews and was excited to finally see for myself. To recreate the DTF experience, we ordered everything we normally would at DTF. The soup dumplings had good flavor but didn't have that paper thin skin that I typically like. My favorite thing was actually their green beans which were garlic heavy and had the perfect texture of soft but still a bit of a crunch. The noodles and fried rice were pretty good but didn't really blow me away. Avoid the ribs as they were honestly a bit chewy and hard to eat. I can see why this place got mixed reviews. There are some dishes better than others and the food was overall pretty good. I would say this is not on the level of DTF but still decent food that can help curb your fix. The service was good, even though they were quite busy on a Saturday afternoon. We ordered the spring roll, pork dumplings, pork and truffle soup dumplings, the soup dumpling sampler, orange chicken, braised beef noodle soup, string beans with garlic, and boneless pork. We enjoyed the variety of soup dumplings. The skins were thin, and the dumplings were tasty and juicy. However, we didn't like the braised beef noodle soup, as the beef was tough. The honey soy wings were exceptional - coming from my wing obsessed husband. My son loved the crab ragoon, so did I and I know this more of an American inspired item. The cucumber salad and edamame were both average but good veggie dish. For XLB we got the sampler and liked the traditional pork the best. Came during lunch time with my coworkers and saw the restaurant not busy at all. We decided we'll take a risk since we only had an hour but the service was quite slow. I understand it's still a fairly new restaurant but definitely would've loved more urgency in everything. The server was very friendly though! It took almost 10 mins to receive water and finally being able to order food. After ordering, the food came out super slowly. Our entrees all came before the actual appetizers that we ordered. The server put in incorrectly of one of my coworker's noodle dishes but since we were on a time crunch, we just gave up. They had nothing sesame sauce available but still kept it on the menu which was very disappointing. Let's get into the food. I must say, the soup dumplings were very good. The skin of the dumplings weren't as soft as I'd expected but the flavors were good. The braised beef noodle soup was on the much sweeter side. Threw me off because I came from a city where this cuisine is highly eaten and the textures and flavors were very interesting. The stir fry noodles came in a ramen type of bowl instead of a plate so the condensation(I think) ended up making the noodles very soggy at the bottom and filled with liquid. The spicy wontons were a little over cooked and didn't exactly have that good punch. There was absolutely 0 spicy anything even though it states spicy wontons. I'm not sure if they are trying to cater the taste to non-Asian customers but given that they are offering this type of food, I wish they made it more authentic. That would drive way more customers like myself in. The ambience and decor were beautiful though! Many seats and open kitchen just like Din Tai Fung and Nan Xiang (in NYC) is a good choice I'd return again to try in the future when the restaurant seems to be more settled in and more experienced but right now, not very satisfied. read more

I have 3 little girls and they absolutely loved it... the noodles and orange chicken... they said it tastes pretty close to Panda! I'd heard good things about this place and decided to try it out for a date night. Ambience is like a fast casual place with an open layout that tends to get pretty loud. It's inside the mall so there's lots of young people and families with crying babies. Service was ok but the servers seemed to have more tables than they could handle at once but I'm not gonna ding them because it's still somewhat newish. I will ding them for cleanliness though. My date's spoon still had food on it from the previous use. The plates still have grease residue on them as well so it felt really gross. For the food, I did like the spicy wontons and schezuan pork soup dumplings but it seems that those are the only things that are fresh. My date's noodle dish did not taste fresh and felt like it was basically made from frozen noodles from the grocery store. read more

I was waiting for this place to open up and it finally did! This is now my go-to place for soup dumplings in Fairfax now! I know there is other places that are good for Sichuan cuisine but for pork soup dumplings, this place is the best in Fairfax for it. (My favorite place for XLB is Din Tai Fung and they sort of operate like them with the XLB makers being seen in store but its not quite as nice as DTF.). But for Fairfax and this area, the pork XLB is pretty good. As for the other foods, I enjoyed the beef noodle soup. Good flavor and noodles cooked well. The shrimp fried rice was also pretty good. I ordered the shrimp fried rice, pork & crab soup dumplings, orange chicken, chicken wontons, noodles with shredded beef and shishito peppers (they were out of beef noodle soup), and a lychee iced tea. The shrimp fried rice was unevenly seasoned, some bites were overly salty and others decent. The pork and crab soup dumplings were pretty delicious as they were juicy and flavorful. Chicken wontons were meaty but bland. The shredded beef noodles were a no go for me. You can definitely taste that bamboo shoots are from canned, and they weren't cleaned well which overpowered the dish. Orange chicken reminded me of Panda Express (in a good way lol). Don't expect authentic orange chicken where it's freshly fried and cooked but it was delicious! Service was slow but understandable for a new spot. If they improve the details, it could be great. Upfront, all of my reviews are based on my expectation going in. That means 5-star sushi from the local deli/gas station is not gonna make it past two stars coming from Nobu. The extra step I took on this review, is; I looked at the previous reviews, including one from just an hour ago today. That also informed my decision as today is the last day of their first week open. So that explains quite a bit. As the previous review today mentioned, they were out of quite a few things by suppertime on Sunday. However, I am willing to take into account that everything on the menu is made fresh and on the premises. So missing a couple of the favorite dishes in their first week of service is not a surprise. What we did order, the Mongolian beef, the shredded beef noodles, the barbecue pork steamed buns, and the shrimp Shumai were absolutely amazing! My only reason for not going 5 stars on this review is because yes, they were out of a few very popular menu items, and the music on top of the rest of the noise just made it way too loud in here. They need to do something about either turning down the music and or adding some Sound control in the restaurant. The brightest star in the entire performance here was our server, Anastasia. She was professional, courteous, and knowledgeable of the restaurants and the dishes. And she made it a pleasure to order seconds to take home. I've been looking forward to Ugly Dumpling opening in Fairfax, so I was excited to finally stop by today! We tried four dishes, and overall had a solid first visit. The pork soup dumplings (6 pcs) were great--plenty of flavorful broth inside and the dumpling skin wasn't too thick, which I appreciated. The spicy pork and shrimp wontons (8 pcs) had a nice filling with whole pieces of shrimp, but the sauce was more soy sauce-heavy than expected--I was hoping for more of a chili oil kick. The noodles with sesame sauce were springy and satisfying, though a little on the salty side. Surprisingly, my favorite dish was the garlic green beans--perfectly cooked with a great bite, and packed with garlicky flavor without being overwhelming. We used to go On The Border a lot, so we wanted to see what they did with the place. Upon entering my wife asked if this was a Chinese restaurant (she hates Chinese food). We told her no, it was a dumpling restaurant. She's so dumb. Normally my wife makes us sit at a table like some happy family but to my surprise, when I suggested all three of us sit at the bar she said okay. This never happens so I'll take what I can get. We took at seat at the very front of the bar where we watched Sam make cocktails like a mad scientist. I got my beer and my wife got her wine. Sam even went as far as asking her for her ID which I snorted because the goblin is clearly older than the land fair oaks mall was built on. But it made her feel special. We ordered a variety of items and when the food arrived Sarah panicked because she can't use chop sticks to save her life. Sam, sensing this catastrophe emerged from the shadows with a fork for her. Ugly Dumpling is the Chinese knockoff to Taiwan's Din Tai Fung, featuring signature items such as the soup dumpling and pork chop over egg fried rice down to the glossy takeout bag. So how close is it to the original? On a good day I'd say about 70%,. It may fool the casual palate, but a more experienced taster can differentiate between finer ingredients and sharper execution in texture and balance of flavors. read more

A pretty average experience. I don't remember the name of our server but he was pretty young and seemed distracted by his friends who came to dine. Green beans were really good but some of them were ice cold... spicy pork and shrimp wontons were probably the best dish we had. Pork soup dumplings and pork szechuan soup dumplings were also fine but the braised beef noodle soup was so underseasoned and bland. Pretty disappointing considering it's listed as one of their bestsellers. Music was also some type of heavy metal or house music which was a bit distasteful. I have been here twice and both times the food was pretty good, but the service was terrible. The soup dumplings, wonton soup, pork buns, and ribs are stand out items. Unfortunately the first time I went I think the server forgot our entire order. Items came out one at a time and multiple times he asked if there was anything else we wanted... yeah, the other items we ordered. The second time we went, the food we ordered came without repeating our order, but the server disappeared for long stretches at a time. Maybe give this place a 3rd try, but if they aren't better that's it. read more
