Fried chicken was pretty good the yams where delicious. The banana pudding lord have mercy sweet tea good .

Stopped for lunch at Southern Chicken in Surfside located right before Denny's in a building that has been two other restaurants since Taco Bell moved out of it several years ago. There have been a lot of cars in the parking lot which is always a good sign and I heard it was owned by Hog Heaven in Pawleys Island which has great southern food, on their buffet. This restaurant has a blackboard which the daily lunch specials you can choose one meat and two sides for7.85 or 0ne meat and three sides for 8.65 or just a veggie plate with three vegetables for 4.95 . Today I tried the meatloaf, Mack and cheese and chicken bog . The Mack and cheese was good but the chicken bog was not it was a dark brown and kind of spicy now I've eaten a lot of different kinds of chicken bog over the years but this didn't even smell good so I tried eating it but put most of it in a to go box for the dog. The small slice of meat loaf was covered in way too much gravy it also came with a biscuit that was good . The service was fine , but I left and went home and had a sandwich two hours later cause the Meal wasn't very filling . So I was disappointed in the food but may try it one more time since it has only been open for a few weeks. But they have some stiff competition with Pickled Cucumber that just reopened less then a mile past them on 17 .The interior is very plain nothing special just tables . The blackboard had 5 meat choices, 16 vegetable ,starch choices and 5 desert choices. And it changes every day! read more

We go there for breakfast. It is buffet and they will make you eggs Benedict, or pancakes, or whatever else is not on the buffet. They have fresh fruit along with regular breakfast items. Place is clean and friendly people who are right there to get what you need. read more

Went to the Southern Chicken for the first time today for lunch. I live nearby and work on Glenn's bay so naturally it was a place I wanted to check out. I have to say I didn't love it but I also didn't hate it. The service was great, the food was pretty plain. I got the 8 piece chicken tenders (fried) with fries and macaroni and cheese. The Mac and cheese was awful, no flavor, literally over boiled noodles topped with cheese. Not what you would want from a good Mac. The fries were alright, nothing too great but they were tossed in what seemed like old bay seasoning. The chicken although juicy, lacked flavor. I was kind of disappointed considering the man made a point to tell me how great the tenders were. To be honest I probably would rather go to Popeyes because at least I know there will be flavor. All in all I didn't hate the place, it was not the worst restaurant I've eaten at but I probably wouldn't return. read more

Nice place to get good, comfort food. Their meat and 3 sides and meat and 2 sides are reasonably priced and good portions. My husband had the meat & 3 and I had the meat & 2 and our bill was about $18 with the tax. The staff was attentive and pleasant and service was quick. They make some pretty good chicken at a reasonable price. The service was fast and our waitress did an amazing job keeping up with all the drinks. I love the fried chicken! I also love the fried pork chops! They have great pork chops. You have to check the special menu daily because they only have the pork chops a few times a week. I just got back from there a few minutes ago. I placed a large order to go and they forgot one lunch. I called when I got back to the house. I spoke to Dalton, one of the managers, he was very accommodating . They promised to make good on the missing lunch. I go there a few times a week. The food is always made fresh and hot. This place didn't seem much when we walked in, but the service immediately changed my mind. Again surroundings were ok, seemed almost like a fast food restaurant. They surprisingly had a ton of options including grilled chicken fingers which were awesome! The chicken fingers were similar to Zaxbys but slightly less breaded. Food was hot, delicious. The collard greens are like Crack so good. Sweet Potato Caserole was crazy good. Macaroni and cheese was excellent. Staff was on top of everything. If I could I would have taken a whole tray of the sweet potato casserole. Recommended to stop in and eat. read more

Its good. Chicken and BBQ and most of the sides. Desserts need work. Hog heaven is their " sister" restaurant in pawleys island , same food , but served buffet and prices are cheaper. BBQ by the pound to go is $4.95 1/2 lb in pawleys , $6.99 1\2 lb in surfside. Either place had good food. read more

Our new favorite place! We have always been a fan of hog heaven and were so excited to hear they were opening this place up. Love the chalkboard specials and prices are very reasonable for what you get. We are always on the lookout for affordability and good food. You get a choice of meat and then two or three sides for under $9. So far we have had the Fried chicken super flaky and crispy- best chicken I've had. Shrimp are lightly fried and really good! Also have had the pork bbq- very good. A friend of ours had the fish and said it tasted very fresh. We will definitely be eating here once a week. This place was a real disappointment. We waited for over ten minutes in the drive thru, then our food was cold. We use Yelp a lot, and the food looked NOTHING like the pictures. I had the craving for fried chicken so I dragged two of my co-worker to this restaurant we had not tried....even though it's nearly next door to our place of work. I am a really picky eater and hesitate to try new places....what a delightful surprise. Best fried chicken I had eaten in a long, long time. All our sides were also delicious. Avoid this place, it was a waste of time and money! Kentucky Fried Chicken tastes better, all the sides are cold and the chicken is precooked and dried out. The only thing "Southern" was the sweet tea. If we happen to be thirsty and driving by we will stop by and get some tea. However, if we are hungry I would rather stay hungry and keep on driving. read more

YUM!. Was just driving by trying to find some comfort food and boy did this hit the spot. Besides the staff being super friendly the food was delicious. I had the flounder dinner with fries, corn and biscuit. The biscuit taste like grandmas homemade biscuits. Rick had chicken mashed potatoes and green beans. All was delicious. They had so many extras to choose from, okra, stewed tomatoes, baked beans, I cant remember it all. And the prices were good. When we come again will definitely visit again read more

I was in the area and decided to check out this place after seeing the good reviews on Yelp. The staff here were great, very kind and respectful. I know i wasn't the typical customer to come in but they made me feel welcomed. I was honestly disappointed by the food that I received. I ordered the chalkboard special of 1 meat and 3 sides - fried livers and gizzards with Mac and cheese, rice and gravy, and sweet potato casserole. The total price was very reasonable for the amount of food that they gave me. I'm a real county girl so eating fried gizzards and livers is nothing new to me. I had my share of both good and bad, but their gizzards and livers ranked a 4/10. They were over cooked and were too crunchy for my liking. The Mac and cheese tasted like they forgot the cheese and the sweet potato casserole could use some more brown sugar. Great restaurant concept, just need to liven up the flavor of the food. I honestly don't recommend this place unless you don't eat much of any seasoning in your food. read more

Went there today and the food was on the bland side. They also put seasoning on their fries. The bad part was that they use the same cloth to clean more than one table without rinsing the cloth between tables. They also do not spray sanitizer on the tables read more

Ordered take out at 11:30am for 5pm pickup because I was working. I was assured it would be ready. Got there at 5pm...not ready...took about 15 minutes. Got to my car, put the plastic bag on my seat & noticed there was a pool of liquid that was starting to leak out! Went back into the store to get a new bag..When I started to put styofoam containers into new bag-I saw that the cole slaw was in the same container as french fries! Who doesn't love steamed cole slaw?? The liquid? Ordered the fried chicken dinner with 2 sides to go, food was very tasty but SMALL PORTIONS. Lots of options. But, they put the biscuit on top of the dinner with no foil or wax paper so the biscuit was a soggy mess in the go box by the time I got home. Food tastes fine but not worth the money. We ordered 20 chicken tenders with a few large sides and cornbread. It came to $56.00! The tenders were not big and meaty. They were quite small. The large sides were only pints. Because the order was to go and in a bag, I couldn't tell how much food I was paying for until I got home. Very disappointed. Not a good value. read more
