Had a hankering for a latte and a salad and was so happy to have stumbled upon Southern Grounds. The menu is fantastic. So many amazing options. This is SO much more than a coffee shop. They have beer and wine, too. I even saw a table with a bottle of sparkling wine! Such a great vibe inside. Friendly staff. Plenty of seating around the cafe, at the coffee bar, and outside on the patio adorned with lights. This place is perfection and I totally understand why it was so busy. I did not even try for the parking right in front and parked in the lot across the train tracks. I was able to find a spot without issue (and they were packed). I walked on over to the counter to place my order.. right next to all of the delicious baked goods. It took every ounce of willpower not to order 5 or 6. I ended up with lattes and salads, and a whole load of remorse for not indulging my sweet tooth. I am tempted to ask hubs to stop by today so we can get another fix before we leave! We tried the following: 20oz Iced Dirty Chai Latte with Oat Milk ($6.85) 20oz Iced Honey B Lavender Latte with Oat Milk ($6.25) (2) 1930's Cobb Salad ($12.10 each) After I placed my order I sat at the coffee bar while I waited. The coffees were brought over to me and I'd say it was about maybe 10-15 minutes until the salads came out. I didn't even mind waiting because I did not want to leave at all! I loved it in there. I almost ordered another latte to-go because mine was pretty much empty as I sipped and waited for the salads. Too bad I was out of hands! The lattes were perfection. I love that they offer different sizes. Some places just give you a tiny latte and still charge you $6 plus dollars. I happily spent $13 on two large perfect lattes. The honey lavender combo is one of my faves. Perfect amount of sweet, coffee tasted great. One of the best lattes I have had in quite some time. Hubs really enjoyed his dirty chai. The cobb salad was great. Really fresh ingredients. Generous amount of "toppings". Everything I wanted from a cobb salad. We also got a side of ranch in addition to the avocado vinaigrette (which is like really tangy guacamole) and both dressings went perfectly with the salad. I would totally get it again and again. They also offer protein add-ons of chicken ($3) and salmon ($4). Everything coming out of the kitchen looked great. There are so many things I want to try I am so bummed I do not live locally. Stopped in here on my way to work for some coffee. Everyone appeared to be following the social distancing guidelines and the employees were wearing masks. I ordered a late and a bagel. Pretty basic stuff. Coffee was really good but nothing super exciting. The bagel was toasted well but again, just a bagel. I am, however, interested in trying other things on the menu. For how basic my order was, it did take a bit of time as they do things fresh, which I appreciate, but just know this isn't a "quick" stop on the way to work. read more

This coffee shop is adorable. They serve both coffee beverages and alcohol(wine and beer). It has a nice cool sea green aesthetic. I had a pot of English breakfast tea. They provided additional water for free, so I could refill my pot. I can see this as a good place to hang with friends, study(has WiFi), or just chill with a book. The cost of a drinks range from $4 to $6. I am tempted to redecorate my apartment to match this coffee shop. read more

I was here for a meeting with my zoo volunteer group (Wild Things)- our annual planning meeting. Great little location (parking is painfully tight). We had reservations for 15- but it was forgotten- so we had a bit of a wait to secure our entire table. Ordering was a breeze, large menu board above the cashiers or grab a menu while waiting in line to order. I opted for the 3 egg spinach, mushroom & provolone omelet, with rye toast (only one slice) & a fruit cup of strawberries, blueberries & bananas! I loved my breakfast! The omelet was stuffed with veggies & the fruit very fresh and delightful. Service was great! I'm not sure it was a good place for our meeting though- the high ceilings made for a hard to hear table. What a delightful surprise it was for my husband and I to have brunch at Southern Grounds. We thought it would be just another brunch spot but our taste buds were SCREAMING when we took the first bites of what we ordered. I had the Mediterranean omelette... the tzatziki sauce is on point! The gyro meat is delicious and the combination is perfect! Totally recommend it. My husband had a breakfast sandwich and pancakes. He said the pancakes are top 5 he's ever had. My daughter confirmed their deliciousness a few weeks after that visit. They're so good you barely need the syrup. And last but not least.. you MUST try the Lavender Pecan Bar. So here I thought this was just a coffee shop. Little did I know they have a food menu that is not just sweets. Hubs told me he got the grilled salmon bowl that included rice, avocado, pico, and beans. We came during the week and I got the avocado toast with tomato, feta, and red onions too. Huge! Definitely filling, although, I did also have it with a Morning Glory muffin. Hubs really enjoyed his omelet and picked 3 toppings (50¢ for more) lamb, onions, and mushrooms. It came with a biscuit, grits, and whipped butter. The vanilla latte was great. They have beer, wine, and other beverages. There is a lot of spacious seating including outside. They will be having a full bakery. We were surprised that the owner let us try a new recipe for a batch of beignets. They were soft, warm, and sweet. There is a really cool vibe here with good coffee and locally brewed beers on tap. I also like that you can buy cheese, meats, and their hummus. The decor is very modern yet welcoming inside and it has some lounge seats and music is upbeat. It's clean inside and very roomy. I came here on my day off with a colleague to get some work done. I had ordered a Carmel latte and it was delicious - I was very pleased with how my latte had tasted. There is a free water station which I liked. However, I didn't like that it wasn't labeled. I had ordered the hummus plate for a snack. It took longer than I had anticipated. I realize that some of the vegetables needed cut, but it took about 15-20 minutes to get a hummus plate. The hummus plate came with cut up cucumbers, radishes, carrots, olives, and warm pita. It was SO good. Some of the best hummus that I've had at a restaurant. I even bought some from their cooler for home. The rest of their menu looks absolutely delicious as does their dessert cooler. My only gripe about this place is that sometimes when you order a hot drink it comes out lukewarm, so if you want a HOT drink like I do, ask for them to make it extra hot. The location of this place is perfect! I'm so sad that this wasn't here when I lived in the neighborhood, I would've spent so much time here! The inside is spacious, enough to have a group meeting or settle in for a while to get some work done. Their outdoor space is incredible, they have umbrellas for shade and lots of tables big enough for families and large groups of friends. Their baked goods taste as good as they look in the display cases, although they can be a little spendy. They also have soda options and other drinks in the cooler by the register which I think every place should have! I ordered the burger last time and I don't think I can go without it for much longer! It's funny, I just saw this place from the road after leaving their competitor - Bold Bean - and I thought to myself, what the hell ! Let's do a side by side comparison and rate test . I still prefer the milder Bold Bean roast buuuuuuut these guys are very very comparable in quality and I love the space . So this is the second version of the popular beaches location except this place is a little bigger and offers more in the way of food options. The buildout is stunning. True to the industrial utilitarian chic standard that most craft coffee houses follow there is extensive use of exposed cement and ductwork- retro-ish lighting and exposed woods. The staff there is suuuuuper nice annnnd did I mention that there is a cool outside seating area? I got a cafe con leche and a cookie. The quality of the baked items is solid- can't wait to try this place for lunch. In addition to a full coffee bar, there is plenty of wine choices as well as a great selection of beers on tap. A neat little place right on the railroad tracks, I was intrigued by the variety of the menu and definitely wanted to try it! I had 3 to go orders: avocado toast, and 2 chicken salad sandwiches. I ordered the seasonal avocado toast which was supposed to have: guacamole, heirloom tomatoes, feta, poached egg (which I was MOST excited about) and micro greens (which I was also very stoked on). I should have checked my boxes before I left because I opened my order and was very sad. Instead of a poached egg it had a too crispy fried egg and NO micro greens. Not only was this disappointing, but I was charged more because it was a seasonal item and they essentially just gave me the heirloom tomato avocado toast. I also somehow had to wait 35 minutes for the chicken salad sandwiches to come out...? Which were tasty, but lacked some flavor. I did however appreciate that they put dark meat in their chicken salad. I always try things twice so maybe I'll give it another go. read more

Avocado Toast with a side of spittle. With the rise of positive CoVid cases and many of my favorite restaurants temporarily closing due to wait staff testing positive; it was offputting to see staff not wearing masks and very few customers wearing them while ordering. My group and I try not to be "crazy" so we wore our masks as much as possible and sat away from everyone. It was very evident we were nervous. While sitting with our food in front of us, my 72 year old mom and her friend asked: "How come no mask? Aren't you a little afraid of the outbreak?" The answer we were given by a super enthusiastic employee was loud, wet, and abrasive. So, thanks for letting us know Southern Grounds doesn't believe in needing to protect themselves or their customers. We got your message with your side of spittle loud and clear. We got up and left abruptly. I sent an email to the establishment. No reply. I posted on Southern Grounds' instagram.... it was deleted. So, I'll post this review right here where I've been a fair and supportive patron of many restaurants all over the world for over 5 years. I'm a Jacksonville native who enjoys supporting locally owned businesses and have always given establishments the benefit of the doubt. However, this is the first time I can say, myself and the other patrons with me will never patronize this place and will make sure our circle of friends hear about our disappointing experience. Of course, as it turns out there are several private facebook groups already a buzz with disappointment, so this review is mainly for the yelp world. Great addition to San Marco! Very friendly staff. Nice selection of coffee (but of course!), local beer, wine, breakfast, sandwiches, cheese & charcuterie boards and amazing looking desserts. Cute decor, open space with an outdoor seating area. Fido is allowed on the patio and they have live music on Saturdays. I had the Southwest chicken wrap and it was full of flavor. Visited here this past Sunday at around 10:45 am. Yes there was a line but we didn't have to wait to long to order. However it was almost exactly an hour before our food arrived. I checked based on our receipt. I thought maybe it was because i ordered the burger but it was taking forever for all the peoples orders around us to come out too. We saw some people go up and cancel their orders because it was taking so long. Also, they need a sign to tell us if we are supposed to clear our tables or staff. We sat on the patio and there was no trash can. Everyone kept leaving their dishes but no servers came out to clear the tables so it was hard to know if a table was occupied and then what do we do with the stuff. Plan to give them another since we want to support local try but I do hope it doesn't take as long. read more

Wow - what a surprise find. Had lunch here with my so at his request - he wanted to give it a try. The venue is very bright and welcoming. The food options are very 'current and hip' flavor profiles and there's a dessert case that looks divine. Oh to indulge in a sugary snack - yet i took a pass and chose my calorie deep dive in favor of a burger. The burger is not on their lunch menu but they were more than happy to oblige my guilty pleasure. The burger here is my new favorite in Jacksonville. I love a good burger, and this one was well seasoned, cooked to perfection and accompanied by an appropriate layer of bacon and sautéed mushrooms. It's just delicious. The fries were great too - not greasy at all. I'm wondering if they use an air fryer because there was zero grease. My so had a Greek pita which he scoffed down and didn't even offer me a bite. He'll be sorry for that someday. He said it was beautifully seasoned and delicious. The only downside i can share is ..... Parking. Isn't this true for all of san marco? There is additional parking across the tracks. This makes me worrisome of folks loitering around the crossing. Those trains don't go fast through here - so please be careful. Trains are unforgiving. Be careful crossing the tracks. If you're lucky enough to get a spot in the lot immediately in front of the restaurant, it's even still a narrow area and tough to get in and out. My life has been very hectic the last couple of months because we sold 2 houses and moved from central NJ to St Marys, GA. On December 15th we had to go to our bank branch in Jacksonville and needed to get lunch. I Yelp searched and found this place. I cannot wait to go back. I had gotten a decent latte in the Jacksonville airport on a previous visit. I'm sorry there's no pics, I need to improve in that area. I dig the coffee house vibe, and the baked goods looked outrageous. My wife had a salad of some sort that she raved about but I choose the seasonal mahi sandwich with fries. Probably the best French fries I've ever had. I believe they were fresh cut, with clearly a superior potato and fresh fryer oil. The sandwich was delicious mostly because of the pickled slaw on it. The bun was excellent as well. The fish could have been more on the rare side but otherwise just fantastic. Will definitely stop in whenever I'm in the area which will probably be often. read more

We visited the San Marco location while on our way back to Clearwater. Allthough we were dissapointed that they didn't have the charcuterie board (the other location does) the salmon (toast) they have is amazing. I don't even remember having that good salmon in high end sushi restaurants, almost as good as back home in Finland. The goat cheese toast was very good too, I would have liked it without the fig jam. read more

This was our first time here, we were invited by my daughter's friend and was pleasantly surprised. There was both inside as well as outside sitting with enough room for social distancing. The staff wore mask and were sweet & friendly. It is very clean and provided hand sanitizers all around for everyone to use. Good vibes. They have great menu items for everyone which was nice. As you can see, the food we ordered looked amazing and best part is it tasted even better! Fresh and delicious! OMGGG the dulce de leche cheesecake with candied peanuts for dessert was outstanding! I live so close to this place and never knew it was here! I am glad I stumbled across it because I have been in the mood for a good juicy burger since the world started opening back up from Covid. I enjoy the atmosphere and actually like that it sits close to the train tracks. They have those cool see through garage doors so you can enjoy the trains as they pass by. My burger was delicious and cooked perfect. I especially liked how well they cooked the onions. The fries were fresh, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. I will be back and if there desserts are as good as they look I will probably upgrade this to a 5 star. Parking was the only thing I could say was wrong with this place. read more

Upon arriving, we realized the parking was very limited and when it was time to leave, it was almost impossible to get out from such a tight space. However, the food and coffees were really yummy! It was pretty packed the time we got there, but the cashiers worked fairly quickly. I ordered the brunch burger with pasta on the side and my boyfriend got the steak frites. Both entrees had a lot of flavor, especially the steak and pasta. My entree portion was fine, but there were more fries than steak on his plate. We also got a couple different bakery items which were tasty and just enough to cure a sweet tooth. I enjoyed everything but it is a bit overpriced for the portion sizes.
