Went here for the first time this morning with my family. The cashier was rude right off the bat. After waiting in line for 10 minutes, she informed us that if we didn't order immediately she wouldn't be able to put our order in. We placed our order quickly, and when we were paying, she told us that because we ordered 6 items, we had to pay an extra $10. Keep in mind our 6th item cost $3.25 so this ended up being a $13.25 side of sausage. This is a ridiculous policy that, we found out after we paid, did not actually appear to be the store's policy. The receipt stated the $10 policy was for parties of 6 or more (we were 5 people) not 6 items or more! That is unacceptable and it's hard to imagine the cashier didn't know what the policy was. We waited 20 minutes for our order, which had 2 mistakes when it came out. And one of these mistakes is that the now $13.25 side of sausage was missing... We brought up the policy stated on the receipt with staff in order to give them a chance to make things right, but were told instead that "they need to change that on the receipt." My family liked their food. I had the vegan pancakes which were nothing special and tasted like they had been cooked in potato grease left on the griddle. What could have been a positive experience was ruined by terrible customer service. I don't foresee any of us returning. read more

I love this bakery mostly because they offer a wide variety of vegan items. Truth be told, you can't even tell that these items are diary and egg free. My favorite is their Coconut cake.. this picture is of their Red Velvet. Best to order ahead.. but they do keep a few of their popular items frozen. They must have been having a bad day bc the food I just tasted was terrible. I order the Cuban and severely disappointed. The sandwich was soggy and the bread was stale - honestly I think they microwaved it. The meat was over cooked and lacked flavor. One of the things I miss most about not eating dairy and egg are sweets. While changing my diet has helped me to build character and stay in shape, I definitely have missed enjoying a succulent dessert at the end of my meals. And then, I discovered Southern Sweets. One day a waiter at Café Sunflower let me in on the fact that their vegan cakes and pies were delivered daily from Southern Sweets. Well, that ended my $7 a slice addiction to Sunflower and began my $30 whole cake affair with Southern Sweets. Their vegan cakes are the best I've ever tasted (sorry mom) and people tell me that their other selections are also excellent. In addition to sweets, they serve soups and sandwiches daily on site. Oh my god. I went here with a friend, who was getting a cake for her sister's baby shower. We had lunch and cake there. And I must say, their vegan cake is AMAZING. I tried a piece of their coconut cake, and took home a piece of their strawberry layer cake. If I had to choose, I'd say the coconut cake was better, but really, they were both delicious. It's certainly more sugar than I'm accustomed to consuming (and so ridiculously rich, oh my god), but it is a definitely amazing treat. All their bread is vegan (it usually is, but I just inquired to be on the safe side) and the eat your veggies sandwich is filled to the BRIM with veggies and delicious. I wondered whether I should even write this review, but as someone who uses Yelp (to the point where I have the lovely Blackberry app on my phone)...I figured this needed to be said. The first time my husband and I visited after a trip to the DeKalb Farmers Market, no problems. We ended up with 3 cake slices on our ride back to the western side of the metro. Today was a different story. In true pregnant woman fashion, I had a craving for a huge slice of cake. Being on maternity leave and just leaving the DeKalb Farmers Market, I asked hubby to stop by the bakery so I could get something sweet to eat for the ride home. We walked in, well, I waddled in, and instead of the pleasant attitude we received the last time, the lady behind the counter looked us up and down and dryly bid us a good morning. I let it roll off my shoulder-it was 10ish am, perhaps she was baking a number of cakes for the upcoming holiday. Who knows. We made our selection after a few minutes-I got a slice of Vanilla Bean Cake, hubby got some Boylan soda...and we go to the counter. Here's where I had a problem. As I whipped out my debit card to pay (and I've done it before--paid by debit here with no problems) this woman asks for my ID. What do you need my ID for when I'm paying by debit card? The LAST TIME I came, you didn't ask for my ID. Is there a law that says you have to ask when you see grown people during the work-weeks coming in to purchase a slice of cake? Really now. So anyway...she asks, and since I had it out, I showed it to her and I really wasn't in the mood for drama. She THEN PROCEEDS to ask me "debit or credit?" Um, why didn't you ask me that first? So I ask her why does she need my ID if I'm using my debit card...and she stammers, "Oh, I thought you were running it credit." I understand the need to protect yourself in this economy...but don't make your customers (especially the ones likely to YELP AND TWEET ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES LIKE ME) feel like criminals who just want a slice of $5 cake on the ride home. I'm not sure if I want to go back. The product is delicious...but the service? It's not that serious to go through all of that for a slice of cake. read more

Mmm...this place is casually cake-tastic. The bakery is small but has some scattered small tables and chairs and some couches. The drinks are self serve (and yes they have coffee) after you pay at the counter when you place your order. If you're sitting, they will bring you your food, and your cake will be in a to-go box because chances are you won't finish the huge honking slice. This is a great snack or quick brunch location, and of course there's the cake. I ordered the chocolate red velvet cake - moist cake, chocolate frosting, perfect and an apple pie to go - super sweet crust, delicious filling, a solid pie that I would be proud to bring to a house-party (or eat in it's entirety in one sitting). The cake slices are ginormous, and after about half you'll likely want to save the rest for later. As for food, I did get a two-cheese grilled cheese sammich (with gouda and cheddar). I added tomato and lettuce but didn't think to add ham which I should have. The sammich was good, but not spectacular. At the end of the day I was more impressed with the baked sweets. There are vegan options (NICE) and plenty of fresh cakes with lots of daily options. The location is a bit out of the way, but if you're heading for the dekalb farmers market anyway, stop in and cake-it-up. read more

It just wasn't worth the calories. The service was curt, the baked goods were pricey and unattractively displayed in dark, dusty looking cases, and worst of all, they just weren't that good. The chocolate pecan tart was sickeningly sweet with a strong artificial taste, and at $5.50 for a medium slice, it just wasn't worth a lot of things. If you're looking for this type of dessert, swing by Trader Joe's and get their caramel almond tort- it's basically the same thing and you get a whole cake for the same price as a slice at Southern Sweets. Also, in this age of cutesy cupcakes in monogrammed boxes tied with ribbon, Southern Sweets' black styrofoam clamshell was a little disappointing and didn't make me feel like I was treating myself, just eating cheap take-out. read more

The key word here is 'appears' - because scratch the surface and Southern Sweets' offerings are no better than the middle of the road bakeries in just about any other sweets-loving city. Yep, I'm that cynical bastard from out of town. But if you need to know one thing about me, it is this: I evaluate baked goods for a living but you won't find my name in print. I travel all the time, and I make it my business to know what's great in every city I visit and seek it out. After reading the stellar reviews here, I thought I was going to be pleasantly surprised by the quality and deliciousness of everything I tried. I was wrong. Really wrong. First let's talk about the way the baked goods look - they're oversized, just like the sweets at Cheesecake Factory. That's right. I just compared this joint to Cheesecake Factory. I'll concede that Cheesecake Factory is different in that they have a much larger plant - two actually, where thy make their stuff. And - just a guess - I can't imagine that Cheesecake Bakery offices have as many cool cookbooks as Southern Sweets has on display. The cakes I tried - allegedly the best Caramel Cake around and an apple spice cake and a red velvet - just didn't impress. I didn't like the texture and at room temperature it just didn't perform. I wasn't able to try the fresh baked pies, which looked amazing. Perhaps next time I'll have to pick up a couple to test them out. OK Southern Sweets. I'll give you another chance. I was told "all of them" and never once was told that only cakes already sliced into could be served by the slice. I hosted Thanksgiving this year for my family, and cooked almost the entire spread for the whole family. The only thing I didn't cook for Thanksgiving, was dessert, I let Southern Sweets help me out with dessert. I preordered an apple pie and a sweet potato praline cheesecake over the phone(and I prepaid so I didn't have to wait in the 20 person deep line when I got there Wednesday). The apple pie and cheese cake were a HUGE hit for Thanksgiving! Plus it saved me so much headache and it was one less thing I had to do for Thanksgiving. I will likely never bake my own pies or desserts again for a large group, but will let Southern Sweets help me out on that one. Plus I bought a couple cartons of high road bourbon burnt sugar ice cream to top the apple pie with. . . .omg so good. I ordered a vegan cake for my daughters birthday and chose the taste of everything and I was able to select 9 different slices of different cakes. I am not vegan but have to say these were the best cakes I possibly have ever had. Highly recommend the carrot cake, coconut cake, chocolate mouse cake with raspberry, strawberry cream, key lime, chocolate ganache tarte and chocolate peanut butter cake.
