Southgate is one of my top restaurants in Philly. They have something for everyone! Want a delectable, comfort food burger? Gotta go the crispy chicken sandwich. Want something lighter and healthier? The bibambop and hot stone bowl dishes are flavorful, fresh, and delightful. In the mood for soup? I'm still thinking about the thick, warm pork belly miso ramen soup. Just there for fries and a cocktail? You're in luck, they have a mean happy hour that runs for insane hours (till 7PM EVERY DAY of the week). They have ample vegan and vegetarian food. The prices are reasonable. I can't recommend the food enough. I've had half the menu now and nothing has been short of perfect. The servers are kind and attentive. I didn't know much about soju, and they explained all the different types for me. I opted for a bottle, which is certainly cost effective if youre trying to catch a buzz, but I preferred the taste of their soju cocktails. Beers are quite cheap during their happy hour. It's small and pretty crowded inside--definitely close quarters--so if you're looking for somewhere more intimate or quiet this probably isn't the place, although there's much more space outside for the warmer months. Southgate is hands down one of my favorite restaurants. It was one of the first places I went in the midst of COVID. When I say this place is perfect, I mean it. All the food is amazing, everyone that works there is truly phenomenal and friendly, like I cannot say more good things about this establishment. My most recent time going (Friday ) I went with about 7 friends and we went for happy hour, we each ordered a box of different food and ended up needing to switch tables because we had more people arrive, and were easily accommodated, because everyone that works there is amazing! I've gotten takeout from Southgate before but this was the first time I have the dine-in experience. The service was amazing! One of the best in the game. Fair warning though this space is pretty small and the walkways are narrow so please be patient when the servers have to take getting to you and when you need to get up from your seat to go to the bathroom or leave after paying the bill. I ordered the watermelon soju drink (pretty strong though, as strong as vodka), the soy garlic chicken wings, tofu stone pot bibimbap, and the black sesame creme brulee. Because they were so busy, I had to ask for the dessert menu though which was no trouble at all. The servers work as a team and it shows it how they help one another. Even when they accidentally brought me half spicy and half soy garlic wings, once I mentioned that I only ordered soy garlic, they immediately brought the food back to the kitchen so the mistake could be fixed. For the stone bibimbap, don't forget to mix it! The crispy rice at the bottom is delicious but be careful because it's pretty hot. The red paste is gochujang, a spicy Korean sauce. I was not a fan of the watermelon soju personally but I also don't drink alcohol much so it was a bit strong for my personal taste and preference. The black sesame was delicious though! There was only a subtle black sesame flavor, due to the black sesame seeds on the caramelized top but the creme brulee was creamy, rich, and delicious. I dined here for the first time on Thursday and our server, Michael, was so amazing that I now am making this my official to go to spots in Philadelphia just for Michael's outstanding service and making my first experience here memorable. The happy hour was amazing and fairly priced. For happy hour, I got the soju punch which was refreshing and the bao buns that were soft and tasty. I ordered more things off menu as well. I got the Korean fried chicken, both soy and spicy which were made to perfection and had the perfect balance of being crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I highly recommend getting them! I also got the miso shrimp salad that was made to share and the shrimps were HUGE. They had an amazing selection of soju that Michael recommended some for me and my party, and surprised us with a delicious dessert that had some sliced chocolate mini cakes and a fluffy whipped cream. Very pleasant time! Stopped here because we were near by when it started pouring. It wasn't busy when we got it (Thursday at 5:20). We sat at the bar and all of the tables filled up by time we left. Spicy chicken wings and crispy tofu banchan were my absolute favorite things we got. They had happy hour, $16 burger and beer and $5 city wides with soju. Happy hour had many things on it, and great prices for Rittenhouse area. I didn't care for the kimchi fries even though I love kimchi, or the fries in general, just not my favorite type of french fry (more on the thick side). I thought the cucumber banchan was a little thick and could have been pickleier. But I will definitely be coming back here for happy hour and to try their soup and other fried chicken and buns! This place is delicious and has great service. We got a last minute reservation and ended up waiting for a while -- our wonderful server gave us complimentary bao buns and a drink. I came here on a Tuesday night the week after Christmas and this place was jumping. It was a good thing we made a reservation for our group of five in advance. We did have to wait about 15 mins for our table, but the staff was very apologetic about this. Overall the food was good. The soy wings are to die for. Crunchy to perfection and that sauce was so tasty. The Pork bossum was tasty, but the shrimp included with the dish was VERY salty. Ramen was just okay, I didn't love the noodles used for this dish. I had a friend that ordered the tacos and did not love them. The staff took the dish and didn't charge us which was nice. Our group really enjoyed our drinks. We each got a second round. The fries soggy, but there was a lot of flavor (the aioli was good but a little too salty for me). Definitely could have been so much better if they were crispy/fresh. The bao buns were really good! I also got the dolsot bibimbap topped with bulgolgi, sunny side up egg (critical component), various veggies, and ofc gochujang. I really appreciated the rice to non-rice ratio...often times bibimbap comes with way too much rice/not enough veg/meat. Decent Korean spot with reasonable prices. Supposed to an elevated gastropub with a spin on traditional Korean dishes. Servers were great, and there was fast service. We sat at the bar for only a few minutes before a table opened up, but they also take reservations. Definitely would recommend going during their happy hour, which they also have on the weekend! The yakult soju drink was good but would recommend asking for a flavored soju for a sweeter flavor. Spicy soju was definitely an interesting experience. Southgate has been recommended to us quite a few time by some friends! I've always heard about it or seen it posted on social media, so I thought it was time to try it out. We went right when it opened and ordered a few things. We ordered the dolsot bimbimbap, bugolgi burger with southgate fries, spicy pork baobuns, and kimchi burger. The dolsot bimbimbap came steaming hot, and I ordered it with the spicy pork. It had an arrangement of veggies on a bed of rice. To be honest, it was my least favorite item on the menu. The sauce and spicy pork was overwhelming and the whole dish was mushy like a soup. The bugolgi burger tasted exactly like how you'd expect a bugolgi burger to taste-- so no complaints on that!! The bao buns were also pretty delicious. I think if you want to order something when you have no idea what to order.. this is it. It was spicy and sweet, and the bun was warm and soft! The southgate fries and kimchi burger were a little bit of a miss for me. The southgate fries tasted like korean soy garlic fried chicken (which I love) but... I think that the flavor should stay on fried chicken instead. It overpowered the fries and made them sticky and soggy. As for the kimchi burger, it tasted just like a normal burger. It's approximately a four-mile round trip walk to Southgate for me. Totally worth the walk, and I can't wait to do it again. The service was great. With just 2 servers and one runner/busser, I was impressed at how well they kept. things going. We sat outside and got a couple of drafts, though their cocktails look worth trying next time. My husband loved his kimchi cheeseburger. It wasn't as messy as it sounds, but it was flavorful and even better than his high expectations. Even the bun was great. The fries were excellent. What a find! Prior to trying there Korean Fried Chicken the best KFC chicken I have had was at Andy's Chicken on South Street. This KFC tastes healthier and is rockin! I had the Soy KFC however after rereading their menu I see you can order both Soy and Spicy combined, I thought you had to choose one option, good to know for next time. The $8 dollar French Fries were a giant failure and I had to throw out over half the order, way too much seasoning on fries for me but if you like alot going on with sauces on your fries maybe you will like. I wish they had an option for a more basic fry hint hint SOUTHGATE please add this option to your menu ; ) Lastly, I ordered the crisy tofu side item for $4. The order came with only three pieces however this was soooo good. It really blew me away and I almost wish I didn't find it as I see my self ordering take out from this place just to place an order for several side orders of there crispy tofu! Really glad to have stumbled into Southgate. Really well done cocktails, plenty of beers on tap, focused but diverse menu featuring pub classics with a twist alongside Korean staples. Happy hour (2-7pm on Saturdays and Sunday) features a burger for $10. This month's option was their kimchi burger. Perfectly cooked, tons of flavor. Would absolutely order again. Southgate fries ($6) were unbelievably good. Wish the fries had been cooked just a tiny bit more (a couple of them didn't hold up to the sauce as well as I would have liked) but a minor quibble for an incredibly tasty dish. Garlicky, spicy, a little fucky and sweet gochugaru topping the fries and served with a gochujang aioli. Both sauces could be bottled and sold by themselves. Started with the Bold Fashioned cocktail. Tried the Old Boy after the bartender's recommendation. Both delicious. Service was top notch. Sat at the bar with no wait. Tables were full for pretty much the whole time I was there. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed Southgate, as it has been a favorite of mine since it opened. I recently ordered my 2 favorite dishes for delivery. I ordered the bulgogi burger and Korean fried chicken (KFC). Both arrived in the same delicious condition as they are in the restaurant. There is no burger in the city quite like the bulgogi burger. It's a juicy burger that seems to be infused with the bulgogi seasoning, whatever that is. It has pickles on top and some kind of mayo on a sesame seed bun. The flavor profile of this burger is unlike anything else in the city. I love it! The KFC wings are so crispy and so delicious. You can get them with mild or hot. I go with mild. You can't eat just one. Once you get started you will have to clean the plate. I actually got two orders of wings to share with my girlfriend. I knew one would not be enough. On my previous visits I've tried the korean tacos, dumplings, and fries. I remember enjoying every dish, but the burger and KFC stand out. The waitstaff has always been friendly as well. Came for outdoor seated dinner! The prices were a bit steeper than expected, but the service was great and I could see the "modern korean" spin they took on the food. Ordered: Bulgogi Ssam (4/5): Tasted great, but something was a little disappointing about it; maybe after eating korean food a lot I was expecting more things to come with the wraps? It came with lettuce, meat, rice, a sauce, and some pickled radish. I think I was wishing for some kimchi or garlic/scallion and a ssamjang instead of the gochujang sauce, but it was good nonetheless! On the spur of the moment, we popped into Southgate for a quick bite as we were passing by on a Friday evening. We sat at the bar and since we were just minutes under the cutoff for Happy Hour (6:00pm), we quickly ordered a few things off the menu. We ordered some fried dumplings and a few Banchan (sides) items (Tofu and Eggplant). The tofu was my favorite. It had a nice sauce and the outer edges were lightly crispy. The dumplings were also tasty. The eggplant was good, but I was expecting a warm dish, so just keep in mind that the eggplant is served cold. The restaurant was lively and full of people. It's decorated with lights and has a nice atmosphere. They also have outdoor seating, which was completely full that night. The bartenders and staff were super friendly and efficient. I dined in for a late dinner and got started with some appetizers. Starting with the Southgate fries, I saw numerous reviews saying it's a go-to / must try, but I honestly didn't understand the hype. The fries were soggy from the ingredients that were put on them. It had a garlicky taste but not something I could keep picking at. The spicy pork bao buns were really good definitely will recommend it. Now the Korean wings were an extreme flop. The soy wings tasted like the wings were drenched in soy sauce and were extremely salty. The hot wings were not spicy at all. My sister doesn't have a tolerance for spice, and she tried it and said it tasted identical to the soy wings. The bibimbap was piping hot, and I enjoyed every bite. We also ordered the spicy soju, soju punch, my sassy girl & the bold fashioned; all the drinks were strong and great! Now the service here is tremendous. Our waiter was awesome; he was patient with us and kept checking in. Even other staff would double-check to see if we needed anything and so for that an extra star for excellent customer service. Mmmmmmmmmm! So so good! Had it not been for the Philly Magazine event I wouldn't have known about this gem of a place. It's a Korean American restaurant with a bar. It may not seem much from the outside, but on the inside it's super cozy with bar seating, community table and a regular tables. We ordered these dishes: - Pork Bao Buns - KFC Korean Fried Chicken (soy garlic & spicy gochujang) - Pork Belly Bossam - Bibimbap Bowl with Beef The buns tasted pretty good but were a little pricey for the size. There was nothing too special about the chicken wings; they were a little on the small side but offered a decent amount for the price. The Pork Belly Bossam, which seems to be one of their most popular dishes, was quite good. It had solid mix of flavors with lots of variety and the pork belly was very tender and well seasoned. Finally, the Bibimbap Bowl was okay. However, I am normally not the biggest fan of this type of food in the first place. Nothing really stood out to me, positive or negative, for this particular dish. The servers were very attentive and friendly, though there were only a couple of them to manage rush hour, so service was on the slower side. It is a very loud and dynamic restaurant. The inside seating is pretty small and tight, but outside seemed to be a bit more spacious. Recently walked past Southgate and noticed their advertised happy hour, so had to go! From 5-7PM on weekdays AND 2-7 on weekends, Southgate offers both food and drink deals with their indoor and outdoor seating. We strolled by on probably the hottest day of the year and decided to eat outside - probably not the smartest idea, but it actually wasn't as bad as expected with a slight breeze coming in from the street. The outdoor seating was nice and isolated from the street with the covered seating, and the tables were nicely spaced from other diners. And luckily, not many others were as crazy as us to sit outside, so very few people were outside. Our waiter was very attentive to us, making sure our water was always filled especially in the heat. Of course, we were there for happy hour, and they definitely had a good number of deals available. I opted for the $16 burger and beer. I could chose any beer so opted for a tangerine pale ale, which was very refreshing. The burger was slated for the bulgogi burger, which was excellent - there was a good bit of sauce that made the bun a little soggy, but the flavors were on point. The brioche bun was hefty enough to hold up the contents, and the burger patty itself was very substantial. The burger also came with their homemade fries - thick cut, well seasoned, and plentiful, they were great! For $16, it was an awesome deal! My fiancee got the $4 draft beer of the day, which was a watermelon ale. Very refreshing as well! He got the $10 burger of the day, the kimchi burger - he loved it!! There was a ton of kimchi on the burger, and the kimchi was very good - nice level of spice, crunchy veggies, and bacon, a unique taste. He was a big fan! The waitstaff here is on top of things. Apologizing for long wait times and constantly topping off our drinks. This is the second time I have been here. Once for brunch and once for dinner. We started with the potato ban chan, Korean fried chicken, kimchi pancake, beef jap chae, black sesame cheesecake, and peach panna cotta. The portions here are all very tiny. I would recommend one appetizer, one entree, and one dessert per person. The potatoes were nice and soft. Slightly sweet and salty. The perfect way to start off the meal. The Korean fried chick was good as well. We got half soy and half spicy. Nice a crispy and the meat was cooked all the way through. I wish there were more wings but oh well there are other places for that Kimchi pancake was one of the best I have had. Small and savory. Perfect. The beef in the jap chae was dry like beef jerky and also had no flavor at all. The other ingredients in the jap chae were tasty. Lots of veggies. It felt healthy to eat! The peach panna cotta was light and squishy. Almost jello like consistency and the peaches ere sweet and the oatmeal/granola was nice a crunchy. The black sesame cheesecake was single handily the worst dessert I have ever ordered. They must have forgotten to add sugar. It tasted like something I would spread on a bagel. Detestable. If I planned on ever coming back here I would have complained about this dish to my server. But I ain't coming back. We went here for happy hour during covid and only outdoor seating was open, but it was tented to block the wind and there was a heater which kept us warm. The best thing we had by far were the southgate fries. They were coated in a spicy sauce and came with a spicy aioli on the side. We also got the wings which I felt left a bit to be desired. They were definitely crispy but the flavor was mostly soy and not very spicy even though we ordered the spicy ones (so I actually think they got our order wrong looking through other people's pictures if the wings on yelp). We also ordered the bao buns (pork and beef) on happy hour which were fine but not amazing. I think they needed more sauce or something to give it more flavor. I've been here a few times now. The full price entrees are great, but I was underwhelmed by happy hour options. Beer selection isn't great and the bao bun meat arrived cold (not sure if it was supposed to be). The service is fast and the space is great. Super solid delivery experience from Southgate last weekend! Though my husband and I have been to the restaurant plenty of times, it was our first time trying delivery. The restaurant did an incredible job wrapping everything securely, and the time between placing our order and receiving it was really quick! We started with the KFC (spicy) and the pork dumplings. My husband loves dumplings and I was lucky to snag one. Southgate's were very tasty and I really liked the dipping sauce. The KFC was delicious, as always. I stayed consistent with my main and got the Seoul hot chicken sandwich, with fries. It was delicious and definitely spicy. My husband had the pork ssam - I didn't try it but it looked great. Can't wait until we can enjoy a meal at the restaurant again but, in the meantime, I'm happy to know we can enjoy the same delicious food at home. read more

I got takeout from Southgate and had a delicious meal! I ordered the Mushroom Steamed Buns (with sesame aioli and pickles). They were absolutely delicious - the mushrooms were soooooo smokey and flavorful. I also got an order of the Fried Vegetable Dumplings which were amazing. I ate both super quickly - maybe because I was super hungry, but also maybe because they were both just straight up delicious. My mouth is already watering thinking about my next takeout order from Southgate. read more

Unreal. Great happy hour deals. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. Recommend the south gate fries, the tacos, the bao buns, you can't go wrong. 10/10 will go again read more
